He and his son did a really nice job. They built a frame around the fireplace so the dust would be contained during demo and replacement. I would never do that on this or any project since I am a homeowner, not a contractor. I was looking to hire a Deck/pergola/fence/drainage builder who takes accountability and responsibility for the build. As I understand it, CSLB (Contractor's State Licensing Board) and City La Mesa define Owner/Builder as someone who either builds entire project by him or herself or subcontracts a licensed contractor, thereby employing that licensed contractor and therefore creating a W2 for that licensed contractor and therefore taking full liability for that licensed contractor's work. That would be impossible for me to do since I don't have/never have had a Contractor's License, nor have I ever been formally educated in the field. If I was a contractor, I would do the build myself. I am a homeowner, not a contractor.
