Hay market is the best deal in Boston. I wish I started going sooner. I spend so much less on groceries now and try to exclusively buy my produce at Haymarket. Is the produce super fresh? You cannot beat these deals anywhere. There's a ton of options and you can haggle a bit and get amazing deals. I just bought a juicer and so I came over here and spent $18. I got 14 oranges three giant carrots, celery, a cucumber, seven lemons, 10 apples, cranberries, strawberries, four blackberry boxes and two raspberry containers, as well as Ginger. Where else can you get a deal like that? The only bad thing is that most of the time the fruit goes bad by the end of the weekend. I just bought a juicer so I went nuts and juiced and made smoothies for all of this within a couple of days. But you would not normally buy that much unless you wanted to eat it all quickly. Completely nuts. Best deals in the city! Everyone is always very nice there and the spot is super centrally located and an easy walk to Faneuil hall. Once in a while, I'll find unexpected produce: sugar peas, lychees, tortillas, fiddleheads, rambutans. But beware! Inspect the produce very carefully. If it comes in a transparent box, like berries or tomatoes, I turn over the box to see if the produce isn't moldy, crushed, etc. I believe that many vendors have fixed their scales to show higher weight than is true. Well if this isn't competitive commerce at its finest!! I LOVE this market. Vendors yelling out prices, slashing prices before your very eyes and pumping out cheap produce in droves. I like to come here about once a month and just load up on veggies, fruits and fish. I typically buy enough to chow down on some great food right away and then freeze a bunch for later use. If you play your cards right, and bring a couple of coolers to fill up you will literally save hundreds of dollars compared to the supermarket. My only caution and recommendation is that you either eat it right away or get to freezing it or canning it. The produce is ripe and ready to eat immediately in most cases! Also, if you go in the afternoon the prices are even cheaper than what they begin the day as. I did not think that was even possible! The quality is the exact same they just need to unload it. We did snack on the oranges while walking the freedom trail that day. They sell all types of food here, from fresh fruits and veggies, to fish, to spices. It is a bit hard to be served as people are constantly yelling prices and most vendors are restocking their goods. We bought a bunch for a song (ie under $10), the lowest we ever found, literally anywhere in the U.S. especially when compared to Whole Foods, Stop-and-Shop, RocheBros, etc. Basically, price is amazing on that aspect (without commenting on the freshness or how long your produced would last). I would try to not buy with the first seller you see. Rather, account around the whole area first and see what you want to buy. Chances are, what appears to be a bargain, very likely has the same price or lower right at the next or so booth OR fresher. Its a real gem to have a spot like the Haymarket Farmer's Market in the middle of the city. I recently moved to the North End and have made coming to this a market a staple of my week! The stalls are there on Fridays and Saturdays and have a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits! The prices are significantly cheaper than a grocery and so much more fresh. My co workers told me about this place and how cheap everything is so I had to come see for myself. I held off on writing this review until I tried all the produce I bought to ensure that not only was it cheap but also good to eat. The answer is yes--cheap and good! But not everything though. There were a few things that were rotten or close to it like a mango and a pepper and some raspberries but the rest was identical to supermarket produce. Everything I bought game out to $45-$50 so it was a steal. Plus, it's convenient that they validate your parking if you park in the haymarket garage so you can shop for 2 hours ($1) or 3 ($2) worry free. There are a few rude vendors and from what I've heard they typically don't let you pick your own but when I went 98% of the produce I picked so I think they've gotten better about this policy. read more

In the colder months, September after Labor Day through late spring, there is also a fish market! Salmon can be as little as $3/lb and it's fresh on ice. Go earlier on Friday to get the best selection. Check the fruits and vegetables before you buy to make sure you get the best! Prices are already cheap so I don't try and bargain with the vendors. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries for $1. Cantaloupe for $1. Carton of Roma tomatoes for $1. I found vegetable selection to be limited and not necessarily cheaper than a regular grocery store. There were potatoes, sweet potatoes, zucchini, eggplant, carrots, beets, spinach, bell peppers, etc. -- the basics but nothing particularly unique. There are some veggies or fruits that only one or two vendors carry such as okra and red beets. If you go around closing time like 5pm or so you get even steeper discounts. They were selling cases of organic blueberries and strawberries for $5! Each case had 12 boxes of berries. Most of the veggies I bought a bag for $1. Haymarket is awesome! Came here on a Saturday to find a bunch of cheap produce that was still good quality. While things here are not at their peak freshness - you're getting such good deals that it really doesn't matter. For example, I got an entire CASE of blackberries for 2 bucks. We spent some time after purchasing them to pick out the moldy ones - and maybe lost a box's worth of blackberries to mold, but I still made it out ahead. I recommend walking around and checking all the stalls for prices/freshness before committing to any of them. Some stalls let you check out the produce more than others. For example, the blackberry guy just picked up an entire case and bagged it for us. When we got a case of blueberries though, the guy didn't say anything as I flipped the boxes around to do a quick mold check. Nevertheless, this is a great deal for produce. If you're purchasing fruits (such as the mentioned berries) - I highly recommend accepting their plastic bags even if you're against the plastic. We did have some leakers in the bunch and it would have ruined some of our bags if we didn't opt for those plastic baggies. Anyhow, we spent less than $10 and left with over 10+lbs of fruits. P.S. The prices do change (we even saw a vendor flip a price card). They do get cheaper later in the day and as they are about to close. read more

A true gem! After spending $10 - $15, I can leave here with a week's worth of fruit and vegetables. Yes, it is crowded, noisy, and chaotic but that is part of the fun. Bring cash, preferably ones and fives. Plan to use your finds within the week (spoilage can be an issue). You may end up with a spoiled item that goes straight to the bin/compost heap but for these prices, chucking one or two pieces is not a big deal. Especially great if you are planning on making a large batch (pasta sauce, lemonade, etc.). I do wish they were in operation on Sundays, but that's more of a me problem. read more

I am in loooove with this farmer's market. I wish we had something like this in New York City. We have farmers markets, but you can expect to pay $8 for a box of strawberries. This market offered everything your heart could possibly desire at insanely cheap prices. If I lived in this area, I'd do all my shopping here and probably wouldn't spend more than $20 for the week. The highlights and musts for me were the raw oyster and clams stand with fresh shucked oysters for 4 for $5 and giant clams for 6 for $5! I'd suggest going with the clams. They were huge, fresh, and sweet. The guys shucking them took great care to make sure they didn't serve us any dead or not fresh ones. We even went back the next day before leaving for ny to get another fix and ended up getting 4 extra clams for free because they were closing up and nice enough to give us what they had left. I also managed to get a crate of strawberries, a crate of peaches and plums, a bag of tomatoes, a bag of romaine lettuce, and a bag of lemons for $7 total! Pro tip: go when they're about to close for the weekend and they start selling/giving away boxes of produce for almost nothing! I saw a bunch of college students with a haul that took up a whole sidewalk and I'm pretty sure they got most of it for free. They might've been donating some of it to homeless shelters or churches, but either way, amazing deals to be found here! read more

The best time is at the crack of dawn. I usually show up about 7 o'clock in the morning when I can find a parking space out on the street. I find the best selection is in the morning when they have just opened for business. They have a public garage for later in the day. If you have a vendor at the market stamp the ticket, it is only a dollar. You can't beat that. The one point I always keep in mind is that the vegetables need to be used on a timely basis. Most of them get their produce from the same place at a food distributor in Chesea. The distributor needs to sell off the old vegetables to make room for the fresh. That is where the Haymarket vendor come in and purchases the old produce. They use to lower the prices during the course of the day but I discovered that this does not happen. They must have raised the rent because no one does it anymore. The vegetables seem to be priced at about half the market rate at the grocery stores. Sometimes someone will push their prices higher if they think their quality or display is better than the rest. Watch the quality and the prices. Buyers beware. read more

They were selling asparagus for $1, like huge bunches of it, and when I went to pay the guy, he waved his hand and said: "Nah, just take it." So I was sitting on the drive back, just looking at the asparagus to see if there was something wrong with it, why did he just give me a bunch of asparagus for free? So when we get home, I cook it in a nice lemon, and vegan butter sauce with garlic, and you wanna talk about delicious? Man, oh man, I think it was the best asparagus ever. You know those containers of strawberries that normally sell for prices at the supermarket at like 2 for 5 bucks? This was $1, no joke, so we ended up getting a bunch of stuff for just over 5 bucks. I think of Haymarket as its own island but really it is so close to the Faneuil Hall area. Not sure why it is listed near Chinatown since it's NOT. Yes, you can get lots of fruits and veggies at low prices but you should look closely before buying. The quality and prices range from one table to the next. It is a crazy busy but a fun place to go. Pineapple for $1, Cherries $1.50-$/lb, great fresh pita bread. We didn't see the fish market but I wasn't looking to buy and just browsing. The clean up at night is also amazing. One it is just gross to see how much trash is complied in such a short amount of time. Dang, who doesn't like a bargain? Or bargaining? If you do, this is the place for you! We can't resist the deals like 3 hefty juicy Crenshaw melons for 5 bucks (vs. $2 for one), or a dollar for a container of strawberries - or blueberries or raspberries or a bag of lemons - or big ripe avocados for a buck and a half. And dive deeper inside the market, the cheaper the produce gets! And all very fresh, very good quality (the brisk competition keeps the stalls honest). It's also fun to check out the shops lining the Haymarket such as the fish monger, the halal meats butcher, and the cheese shop, also at very reasonable prices. The place is hopping on a Friday afternoon, great people watching, and lots of fun hearing the hawkers hawking their goods and overhearing the colorful side conversations between sellers and buyers.
