When I went find Haymarket PT, I have had two knee operations (ACL and meniscus tears) over the last five years. But out of foolish courage never went to a PT. When I finally went to one in 2016, the experience was so bad that I vowed never again. Then, I noticed Haymarket PT in Bristow Center. At the time, I was living in constant pain and walking with a limp. I could not get full extension on my knee and the first three steps after sitting at desk made me look like an eighty year old man when I was just 50. In eight weeks of twice a week appointments, I was no longer in daily pain and had regained much of my life back. In 16 weeks, I had finally tapered off my visits and left the office. Shortly thereafter, in a fit of bravado at the gym, I was able to jump on a 30 inch Rogue box. Not bad for 50. (See below). That is why I went to PT and will go again when I need the help. It was a total and complete team effort. They have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It is really a great place to get yourself fixed up. I was once a PT agnostic but am now a true believer. The lack of competence of the back-office staff of this practice has cost me not only a great deal of money but has also had a direct impact on my short- and long-term recovery. The office provided incorrect information and unfortunately the business owner does not recognize or take responsibility for his employee's actions. I am writing this to prevent others from ending up in my shoes. Do not believe any verbal communication from this office. Be sure to get all appointment times, fees and office notes in writing. I was very skeptical about the value of physical therapy for my lower spine injury. Despite having been a trail-runner, swimmer and biker for some years, I always thought that the path to injury recovery was through whatever I could do to help myself recover but when faced with an L3/L4 protrusion and subsequent pain and numbness I realized that this problem was bigger than my ability to deal with it alone. The first thing that struck me about Haymarket Physical Therapy (in Bristow) was that the people seemed genuinely interested in me as a person and not just a patient and that my recovery was critically important to them. From my first visit I was impressed with the way in which they performed the diagnosis (that included using modern technology like an ipad to show me exactly what my problem was) and developed a plan of treatment for me. The PT (Rob and then later John) was very clear in communicating exactly what their goals were for me and how they would go about doing it and made sure I was ok with the approach before proceeding. I felt informed at every step of the process. Once the real work of doing the PT twice a week began, the PTA's and techs took over and put me through my paces. Within the first several visits I knew that this was going to be a great therapy. Every time I came, the PTA (Theresa) and tech (Kiara) made a list of the activities I would have to undertake and they would give me excellent guidance on proper form and technique and encouraged me to do a set of exercises at home. They were excellent communicators and took even better notes about my progress or any issues. Their professionalism and expertise was complimented by their friendliness and interest in my condition. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the front desk support (Mika) was fantastic at helping me to coordinate my treatment across my difficult schedule. Her professionalism and competence made what could have been a difficult scheduling problem easy to deal with. In search of PT closer to home I stopped in the Bristow location of HPT about an hour ago. I walked in and sat myself as my 5 year old scurried over to the cutely appointed kids area. The receptionist was clearly inundated with a phone call that didn't allow her the time to greet me. Patiently and understandably, I waited. Nearly 8 minutes later a patient arrived, signed in, was greeted by said receptionist and was warmly ushered to the back and returned to her call. In the throws of contemplation, I sat for a yet another 2 minutes or so and got up to leave as I beckoned my daughter. ONLY at that point did she acknowledge me for the first time as put her hand over the phone and looked at me with questioning pretty brown eyes. I said, "I'm leaving, you are clearly to busy for new patients." Only then did she put the call on hold and said to me, "Oh, I thought you were with her (the aforementioned patient)." I said, "I've been here nearly 10 minutes before her, how could I be with her?" She replies, "Oh, sometimes she has family that comes in with her." In retort, "So you assumed I was with her because I'm black?" Agast at her correlation, entangled in the poorest customer service ever, an inquisitive gentleman with a cold sore (my apologies, I didn't remember his name) came out to see what the issue was, and shall I say, his approach was unbecoming to the company. He nonchalantly said, "Oh, a mistake was made, it happens." I repeated that I was never greeted nor acknowledged with a head nod, a wave, a quick lift of the finger NOTHING from the receptionist and was further offended that she would assume I was with the woman who came in nearly 10 minutes AFTER me, whom I exchanged no eye contact or conversation, because I'm BLACK, bottomline." The third wheel employee seemed unbothered by the loss of business, disingenuous and thereby further offended me. In closing, I must say that the young lady was deeply apologetic as I departed and it felt sincere (as she still was on the phone with the same caller, mind you). read more
