First, I'd like to say that Hay's market is the cutest little grocery store! We love going there for the weekly deals and the wonderful customer service. We recently had the bakery do our daughter's first birthday cake solely based off decor, an imagination, and a picture of something different. We are VERY impressed. I have never been to a market that makes it so complicated to buy fried chicken. I wanted six thighs, but I could only order four because the young lady said that it'll throw off the count. So I said , why don't I buy by peice then or if I'm only allowed to buy four, I'll buy another box of four. She said no, I have to go out of the store or have somebody else come buy a four piece. Lol But when I would go to Woods, I can get how many pieces or whatever cut of chicken I want, which is actually cheaper, but this market is only two minutes away from me. Now that you have competition Hays market. I would certainly suggest not to be so uptight selling your fried chicken since I was not asking it for free. I was even willing to pay by piece. read more

I love Hayes Market, my husband works in Berthoud & I will when I can go early so I can do a bit of shopping there. They have many items I can't find anywhere else or something fun I didn't even know I was looking for. Friendly , helpful staff, knowledgeable people on the sales floor, it's clean, small in just the right way. I really like Haye's Market & wish Loveland had one. They seem to be able to source outside the box - unlike other corp. groceries stores. I hope Berthoud understands just how lucky they are to have a small, local grocery store - Loveland didn't & they lost Crunchy and now all we have is greedy corporate out of state ownership, crappy part-time jobs, & faux health food which got a huge unfair boost from our tax dollars. One day a corporate chain will come knocking at Berthoud's door, promising more jobs & tax revenue..but they will demand tax subsidies 1st- I hope the people of Berthoud know better than we did here in Loveland. read more

The concept of a good local store is exemplified by the Hays in Berthoud. Quality employees and everyone is helpful. The Hays in Johnstown is far below. Some, not all, snippy cashiers, employees with attitudes. They have taken down all Covid protections yet will not bag your groceries if you bring your own bags. read more

While I love the CONvenience of a local store, Hays is extremely overpriced. The employees are nice enough, but the pricing is a real put-off. For example, the bread I buy is priced at nearly $4. Other stores charge $2 for the same loaf. Soup is priced at early $2 and it's nearly $1 every else. They have a racket going sadly because they're the only store for 10+ miles and many in the J-town/Milliken area aren't able to get transportation to the other stores. The store is clean. The produce section is ok though the produce doesn't seem to be very fresh. The meat section would be nice if the pricing was on par to the other stores. They even overcharge on Traeger supplies!! I do wish the owner would stop comparing his store prices to places like Dollar General and 7-11. Instead he should be comparing them to the places people actually go to do shopping: Walmart, King Sooper, Safeway. read more

3.5 stars. Hays is a small grocery chain in Northern Colorado. To my knowledge there is two locations. The one here in Johnstown and one in Berthoud. They have a good selection of groceries which will help you out in a pinch. The produce could be fresher but is decent. Employees are very nice and helpful. They have a big pinata section at this store which I like! I want to do a miniature Zozobora party on Halloween and now I know where to go to get a pinata! If you don't know what Zozobora is just Google it. Think Burning Man but free! read more

Hays has gone down hill. I've shopped there for 12 years and paid the higher prices for the convenience of a local store but after a recent experience, I've decided to shop elsewhere. Two of the ten items were marked incorrectly and I had to prove this to the checkout clerk. Going through the store to show the price that should actually be charged was frustrating. I realize it is hard to hire good staff - especially with the changing culture in Johnstown and surrounding communities but that's not my problem. read more

Do my neighborly Berthoudians have a secret sophisticated life that I am unaware of? Italian Pancetta and Prosciutto in the deli counter. Imported olive oil torta's in 4 flavors on the bread counter. What really bothers me recently was seeing the decorated cakes! OMG. I used to be a cake decorator, and single layer sheet cakes were about 3 inches high, but not anymore at Hays! Hays is cheating their customers by pouring half the batter into the pans so that the layer of cake is half the height. And so a 1/4 sheet cake, for example, is really not 1/4 sheet anymore. And the price??? Over $20 for a 1/4 sheet. Why buy cakes there if you have to buy 2 cakes (at over $40) to get the total 1/4 size they used to be. Very sad to see the owners of Hays do this to loyal customers. read more

It is okay for something you need fast cause our grocery stores are so far away. Other than that I'd rather take the drive to Kings. Over priced, people are nice, and they might want to work on their bakery scams. Good products, decent service. They do not take Amex and other credit cards often do not work on their machines and take multiple tries where the clerks will as questions like "Do you have enough money on your card?". Three people in a row can have the same problem with the credit card reader and that's the question. They need to take more payment methods and use a better way of processing what they do take. We know we are paying a premium there already so shouldn't the service meet that? read more

These are really good people so far. Hays has a few specials and everything costs about the same as Safeway, not cheap but you get what you pay for. Hays is just plain flat out better than most other grocery stores. The products at Hays are superior to the stuff I've had from the chain stores for sixty years. Hays Market is one of the things I like about Johnstown. The bakery department, meat, produce, and deli, are the best. In the morning the deli serves breakfast burritos and a pretty good biscuits & gravy. The items in the bakery that are made in-house are good, but availability is spotty, and they stuff too much jelly in everything. The Hays bakery is way better than King Soopers, Safeway, Walmart, Costco, Albertson's. The pharmacy is another good thing about Hays Market. Good usable drive-thru and it's well staffed. Yes it's overpriced and we rarely do big shopping trips here but overall I enjoy this grocery store. Wonderful meat and cheese selection. Plus they have local products I've never seen anywhere else. Hays Market is the most wonderful store! The produce department is outstanding! Variety of fresh items, along with delicious "made from scratch" dips and yummy vegetable dishes, liked stuffed Porteballa mushrooms. The meat department is the same way. Delicious hand made sausages, along with meat dishes, like shishkabobs, bacon wrapped filets, you name it! If you don't see it, ask the butcher to make it! Friendly, wonderful cashiers, and my grandsons think a trip to Hays is like a trip to the best place on earth, as they have mini shopping carts for them to push throughout the store! I had a family reunion and wanted to take steaks. I usually buy meat at Walmart but thought I would price meat here. I told the butcher what I wanted, Ribeye's, and would like Wal-Mart prices. He got a price for me which was a little higher then Wal-Mart but said I would notice the flavor difference. He also custom cut thickness and size since I didn't need huge steaks. Steaks were grilled and all parties involved love the flavor. Do yourself a favor, buy meat here, might be a little more but it makes for a great meal and keeps the small town atmosphere here. read more

I love this store. The produce is good and the department/floor staff are really nice. They have a lot of fresh items, if they don't make it there they have a local place ship it in every morning. Fresh local donuts, tortillas, salsas, and the meat department makes their own Italian sausage. The meat department also preps kabobs, fajitas and such. The produce department preps a ton of different veggies and fruits for your recipes and the prices are almost no different from their uncut counterparts, it is such a time saver! It is clean and they have a good selection for a smaller store. They have good sales too. This being said, I mainly shop for fresh items and dairy. The boxed non-perishable items, unless on sale, are more pricey than big grocers. But, since it is close and gas is expensive, in those instances I don't care. Plus, I would rather support a local business that supports other local business. All the checkers are fast. read more
