I have visited the store many times, have purchased multiple items over the years, and it is like dealing with someone with a Jekyll/Hyde personality. We have friends in Litchfield and when we come to visit we always stop in at Hayseed. The owner is a lovely woman who definitely has an eye for style. Over the years we have purchased many unique pieces of clothing (from Denmark and Italy), amazing soaps, greeting cards and jewelry. Ignore any negative reviews. Simply ignore them and discount any low class commentary. Hayseed has been an integral part of Litchfield for about 30 years. They were one of the very first high end lifestyle stores ever. They saw a niche and filled it. Nowadays, the formula has been copied nearly every where you go. Hayseed was the trail blazer. To reviewer Re mask - gee if that is true and you feel uncomfortable, then leave. No one is forcing you to shop anywhere. This shop is chock full of wonderful objects, trinkets, jewelry, cards, luscious books and unique finds. The coffee table book selection is truly exquisite. Hayseed has been part of my life since my boarding school days and I am grateful they are still going strong. It's nice to have continuity and familiarity as one passes through time. It is very strange how several reviewers commented on the "elderly owner". While she very well may be a woman of a certain age, I highly suspect all of you would desire to embody such style, panache and grace as you proceed onwards in years. Hayseed has the most wonderful and unique items at a variety of price points. I have shopped there for myself and when I've needed a gift for dear friend or my daughter. I have gone there at least a dozen times over the years and have never left empty handed. The elegant owner has the most discerning style and has curated an interesting array of tasteful things from clothes, bags, baskets and blankets, to the jewelry and greeting card collection. I was never treated so rudely as I was by the old sale woman that accused me of leaving deodorant stains on a dress I tried on which was already stained. then she grabbed the dress from me and would not let me even look at the other sizes. Never to cross that threshold again! read more

I can't speak for this stored review policy, but what I do know, is that I have very sensitive ears that are bothered by literally almost any earring. I took a chance and bought some studs I fell in love with here and wouldn't you know they are the only earrings I ever wear now that don't bother me! I can't want to go back again so I can know the artist and quality of the metal. I had a positive interaction with the woman running the store and sure, there are many expensive items, but there are also reasonable items mixed in and I think the cost is justified because everything here is very unique, in handmade particular greeting cards that are reasonable and very cool cowbells and authentic country decor. read more

I decided to write a review after a very odd/rude interaction with the owner of the store and I feel a bit vindicated that there are so many other 1 star reviews for the very same reasons that I am writing mine. I had purchased a basket/purse on a previous visit, and was asking if I could exchange it for a smaller size which I thought would be a better option for me. Please note: The purse is a very current item in the store,(there must be at least 30 of them in 3 sizes on display in the shop, the tag was still on the one I purchased, it is brand new and I still had the original bag. It would have been an even exchange without any credit or refund. The owner said no, and when I asked why, given it was new, a current shop item, and that there were so many in the shop and given it would be an even exchange, she started to explain about special service she had given a particular customer that went wrong but the circumstances were very different. I responded by saying that was not the situation we were discussing, and that all I wanted a smaller version of the same product of which you have a gazillion. The entire time she was whispering which was odd since I was the only person in the store besides my husband. I had to keep saying excuse me, excuse me...as in I couldn't hear her. It was obvious that she didn't like being questioned as to the reason for her refusing to offer an exchange and then she said, "now you are angry" and something to the effect of now for sure she wasn't going to deal with me. I was angry, however, I never raised my voice, I was just trying to understand her reasoning for her policy on this particular item. She didn't like that at all. I didn't appreciate her dismissive attitude either. When we were leaving my husband said, I hope you won't be shopping here any more and I turned back and told her, I will never step foot in this shop again. Reading the other reviews that are almost identical it is clear that this is not a unique customer interaction. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere, not at Hayseed. read more

Stopped in today after being lured by a gorgeous blue dolman style sweater hanging on the open front door. The owner could not have been nicer and was kind and more than accommodating considering I had my two young daughters in tow. Proper covid protocol was followed. Everyone was masked and we were the only ones in the store. I ended up purchasing two sweaters and will be back before Christmas (maybe sans kids?) to shop for some gifts. The owner has impressive taste - clothes, bags and other items are classic, beautifully simple and high quality. Prices were very reasonable. read more

Hayseed may look like a cute country store from the outside, but don't be deceived. Hayseed is the worst little store in Litchfield county. The elderly owner's behavior is appalling. I came shopping on a weekday afternoon when only a few other customers were in the store. I greeted her with a friendly, "Hello!," and she gave me a mean look without replying. While I shopped, she loomed over me (and other shoppers as well) in an overbearing way, as if she assumed the worst of everyone in the store. When I dared to ask a question about a sale on storage baskets, she personally attacked me, calling me names and behaving as if I had asked something unreasonable of her. I was shocked. It was a completely inappropriate way to interact with anyone, much less a potential customer, and it was completely uncalled for. You would think that an owner of a store would take pride in her own merchandise, or at least take an interest in making a sale. This is not the case at Hayseed. I will never be back. read more

My girlfriends and I thought we'd get into the Christmas spirit this past weekend so we went shopping in the darling village of Litchfield. We were having a great time until we entered Hayseed. Upon entering we weren't even greeted and were looked upon with v-e-r-y rude looks from the elderly woman behind the counter. Every question we asked was answered with a roll of her eyes and a short, sharp answer, like we were totally putting her out. You would think that small stores would welcome shoppers.....i hate going to the mall and much prefer shopping in small shops but believe me, i won't be going back to Hayseed. read more

Gee "not allow the store to stay"? This isn't Cuba or North Korea. If you don't like it, do not shop there. I'm sure if no one shopped there your wish would be granted, but alas no. I'm a regular and have never been treated badly since I moved to the area. Her merchandise covers a wide spectrum of price points and she carries clothing that you're not likely to see worn by others, which makes it a boutique. Great little girlie gifts too. Great dresses for daughters teens to twenties and up. Another great shop is "The Work Shop" located behind in the courtyard now. Great designers and basics. Love this store, merchandise and courteous merchants! The dress I bought is so nice I called today to buy another. They were sold out, too bad. My query was met with very pleasant replies. I will definitely return when possible. Lunch was at the nearby West Street Grille. Great food, service and surroundings, especially if you love horse and animal photos. Hayseed is a blight on an otherwise charming and friendly row of upscale stores in Litchfield, CT. The owner is an older woman who is very unfriendly at best, but can also be shockingly rude to her customers. It is not worth going in, as it will just ruin your good mood. Instead try shopping at any of the other wonderful stores on the street. I love to shop in Litchfield. It's a great little town. Too bad Hayseed is allowed to stay. My wife went to return a gifted bracelet today, March 29th, 2012 and was asked to produce a receipt. Obviously she didn't have one as it was a gift. The woman-I presume the owner-would not allow my wife to return said bracelet for an exchange. No exceptions. The woman was gruff and rude. A) We will never set foot in the store again and B) I'd like to remind anyone in business that if you do a good job 10 people will hear about it. Do a lousy job and 110 people will hear about it.
