My wife and I were on our Diamond Bessie trip and had tried a few local places but had not gotten to this place which has a unique history of its own and we wanted to try it out. It was VERY hot outside and even short walks caused you to feel drained and sweat a lot so we were happy to be inside, it was a nice place, quiet, dimly lit which was nice after the brightness of outside. There were several tables with families, about 2 or 3 which is not overly busy but the dining room was small so it stood out. You walk in and wait to be seated, the hostess got us to a smaller table and then got our menus before heading to the back. We got our waters and never saw anyone else working besides the woman who seated us and gave us the menus and water. The second star is due to the menu looking intersting and the restaurant looking nice and quiet as well as clean. The low score is due to that is as far as we got. After getting the menu's and water we received no other help. We saw the hostess a few more times but never back at our table or the other tables. We did have a play to get to later so we did have limited time but we were able to leave here and go to another place and eat before the time limit. So after a wait, we finally left, we hadn't seen the hostess for some time by this point so I don't think they were aware we left and it was very disappointing as it looked like it had some good food and drinks. I don't mind a bit of a wait and I know many places are short staffed and this was a busy weekend for this town. But this was the only place where we didn't get any help. If we are ever back this way we will be happy to try again. But on this trip we were let down. Disappointing. We wanted to check this out , even though reviews weren't great, because it looked like a cool building. I really wanted to like it, but it just fell short. The decor is super cool. Lots of antiques. Cool well room that is a private table with a view down into the lit cistern. Bar area is super cool and cigar lounge upstairs. There was a single table when we arrived and they were almost done. We sat at what had to be the most awkward table I. The place. If I were seating people, it would be the absolute last table I sat folks it would be the LAST table I sat folks at. It was a drop leaf, and either you had to sit with one leg on either side if you wanted to sit directly at the table. Otherwise, you had to sit angled to the table to keep both legs on one side of the table leg. They were out of the watermelon goat cheese sliders we were dying to try and there didn't seem to be a lot of gluten-free options. Nothing was noted as gluten-free on the menu. Intriguingly enough, they had several pasta dishes listed as keto. I'm not really sure how that would work, pasta and all, but didn't ask as it was strictly curiosity. We got the tomato basil soup as a starter. It was tepid. Great flavor, but barely warm. We ended up ordering the fish and chips to share. Didn't want leftovers as our room didn't have a fridge. Fish and chips were good, but not amazing. Also got salad and the loaded tater tots. I know not terribly healthy, but seemed like the best choice to avoid leftovers. Tater tots were disappointing. We've had loaded tots other places and these were far from loaded and a small serving. I could see this place being fabulous, but execution fell short. There was the manager on site, owner and at least 3 other staff. For price, service and quality it just was not worth it and we are happy to pay for good food and service! read more

What a great place to visit on your day in Jefferson. There are so many choices in Jefferson but if you have a group that has diverse wants then this is the place. They have a huge menu with something for everyone. Want to watch the game in a classy setting? They have a beautiful bar area with a giant tv. Want to book a private room for 2, 8, 30? They have that too! This place is so awesome and if you know Jefferson, parking can be an issue but not here as they have a PRIVATE parking lot just for their patrons. We will be back for portobello mushroom caps and steak bites. Or fish and chips or hmm I guess we have several trips we need to plan! read more

Update: The owner reached out and apologized and made it right. She was super nice. We will absolutely give the Haywood House another go ;) Wife and I came in for brunch. I had the BLT which was your typical BLT with tots. No issues there. Our issue came from the "crudeté". What we were expecting was an "assortment" of veggies. You know? What the menu described? What we received was a set up from Buffalo Wild Wings with a 1/3 cup of hummus and no ranch... for $10. The service was good. Bartender stated they were brand new and they apologized for it taking so long because she had to figure out how to make the drinks because no one trained her. Showed up with friends; got seated immediately. Our table ordered no food. Waitress was friendly and quick to take our drink orders. We all ordered; OH GAWD...nobody could fathom what happened next. We're talking 10 drinks. Some were simple pours like beer and wine; 45 minutes to an hour later we were served. My mint julep's ice had completely melted minus a pea size morsel. I ain't paying $13 for this! So, I find our waitress. Says I need to talk to the owners to get it removed from our tab. I head over for a visit with her; she doesn't understand the problem. So, 45 minutes to get a drink is a thing here? We're all ready to bounce; I got nowhere with the owner. Visited with the waitress to start splitting off everyone's tab into separate checks and then leave the mint julep all alone to be taken care of later. I even tipped heavily because it was really the SLOW A** BARTENDERS! Also, we didn't get served the night before when we showed up to hang with friends. The food was good (large entree salads) but would have been better if we could have eaten them in the restaurant. Not sure what the delay was in getting our food out. My friend and I were about the only cut here at 5:00 in the evening. Even with only ordering the salads (we only had about 45 minutes to be there), it took 35 minutes to get them to us. We had to ask for boxes. No time to eat. Dropped them off at our Airbnb to eat later so we could make it to our destination on time. We absolutely loved this place. The 4 of us were there last night and sat in the well room as we celebrated 2 of our birthdays. The drinks were worth the wait, and the food was worth the wait too. My pomegranate julep was cold, refreshing and tasted phenomenal. Both steaks ordered were flavorful and cooked to perfection. Our server was so so sweet and did an incredible job despite her being the only one serving the tables, and running nonstop. The owner was a doll and we enjoyed talking with her about the history, the stunning furniture, and her vision to make this place a reality. We also loved that there is reserved parking!!! Reading the other reviews, there is merit to what they say. But do you ever stop to ask why or what happened?! We did and it helped us frame our experience while there. Keep in mind that so many places are short staffed, no one seems to want to work, and business and industry are suffering due to this. They had a server quit, and a large party on the 2nd floor. It appeared to be 2 servers and one bartender for the entire place. One server for party and one for main restaurant. Sure our drinks took way to long to arrive, but we were there enjoying our friends and talking about the building and history around it and the town. We walked around and checked out the furniture and the beautiful place. Sure our food also took far to long to come out, but when it did all items were incredibly flavorful. The steaks were cooked beyond perfection and we enjoyed all of it. I wish so much success for this business, it's owners, and to all its staff. I plan to be back!!!!! I really wanted to love Haywood House. I love the idea of the restaurant, and the location is great. I especially enjoyed the table built on top of an old cistern. However, the meal experience was not so impressive. My family dined here for my sister's birthday, and the waiter had to return to our table 3 times to tell us that the kitchen was out of a component or item we had ordered. I ordered the fish and chips, and thought it was greasy but very tasty. My nephew and husband loved the burgers. My aunt said that her meal was cold. The biggest issue we all had with Haywood House was the service. We got so frustrated with waiting for the waiter to return that we finally stood up to leave. He suddenly arrived and mixed up the checks, but we paid it anyway and left. The food was fine, but I don't think I'll return to Haywood House unless someone else requests it as a birthday meal. read more

They were short a server tonight so Seth stepped up and jumped in and did an outstanding job. Mic the bartender was super nice and helpful getting us seated and gave us the heads up about being short handed. When we walked in we thought we might be underdressed. It was old European decor, everything looked old and elegant. Lots of fun drinks, settled on their strawberry, basil, margarita. While we were waiting on our meals, the owner, Teresa Ponder stopped by and greeted us. We were so curious about the history of the place. Quite a story, too long to tell but goes back to the civil war. Some of the Yelp reviews were not favorable but I can promise you, if you go, you won't be disappointed. The food was amazing and large servings. We will definitely be back and would encourage friends to stop in if you should you be in the area. This is such a fun town with lots of history. Wish we had found this place the first night, complete opposite of what we experienced at McGarity's. I'm not sure why this isn't shown as a 5 star restaurant. read more

Friendliest folks we've met. Enjoyed the outside patio on a perfect evening. Food was delicious - the shrimp scampi and chicken fried steak were the best we've had in a long time. Charcuterie board was enough to feed a party. Be sure to go on "Monday $ Mug Night" to enjoy a draft for $1. Why can't you add a negative star! This was by far the worst dining experience I have ever had in my life! I don't leave bad reviews but this sent me over the edge. This is gonna be a long read so get ready! It's our anniversary so I wanted a nice restaurant. Made a reservation. Parking lot is nice, and empty. I wondered why I made a reservation. I should have realized that was not a good sign and went to McDonald's instead. We went in and got seated. Waitress was new and..... knew nothing. I can deal with that (she should have been ghosted and trained by another waiter that was more experienced). Ambience was very nice - the rest sucked. I thought this would be a more upscale restaurant to celebrate our anniversary- not! Made our drink orders, and should have ran after paying for them. (waitress didn't know what beers were on tap (they say they have a weekly craft on tap-------no!) Order a beer and they just slap a bottle on the table? Real classy, no mug? Even the cheap place we went to at lunch gave me a frosted mug. We looked at the menu online ahead of time and we were looking forward to the steak bites. Well they were crossed off of the menu with a sharpie and the waitress said they didn't have them. Well it's our anniversary so we splurged and went with the Filet Minon MEDIUM RARE! (the most expensive item on the menu), it's a special dinner, why not?. Comes with two sides. We chose a "smoked potato?", if you don't know what that is, it's a very dried out potato that should be served with a ton of butter and sour cream! (which we didn't get). Our second side was sautéed mushrooms. We were informed the potato was $1.50 extra even though that was not on the menu. OK. We had booked the ghost tour for that night and planned ahead with our dinner reservations to have a relaxing dinner before. It was far from relaxing! My wife kept looking at her watch wondering when we would be served and if we would make it in time. We didn't see our waitress for an hour and when they brought out the food for my wife it was a shriveled up filet with a stick in it saying Med. Rare. (NO!) Also a potato wrapped in foil. That's it! They brought my plate later. Mine had the same but with a small saucer of butter, bacon, and cheese. The potatoes were good sized, but dry as hell. How are we gonna share one butter and eat those dried out potatoes? We asked for more butter, and guess when we got it, when we payed the bill and rushed to get out to make our ghosts tour. Shame on them for what they did to that poor cow. Medium Rare like the stick in it said? NO, NO, NO! More than well done. More like overcooked and dried out as much as possible. No pink, no blood, no juice or moisture at all! I think the cook may have been a vegan punishing us for ordering a steak. After waving down someone who worked there for our sautéed mushrooms (twice), we finally got them. I don't know what the hell they were. Cubed, maybe canned mushrooms that were black and gelatinous and had a horrible flavor. That did nothing to help us choke down the steak. I tried using the A-1 sauce that was on this huge carousel on the table like you see at cheap roadside dinners with condiments that looked like they had expired years ago to no avail. It came out liquid like it has been sitting there for a while. I should have checked the expiration date before pouring it on my plate. That was it for me. I threw in the cheap paper napkin on my plate after only having a few bites of a $47 filet. My wife tried to wrap pieces of hers in the potato foil and wrap it up to make it look like she ate it. I said hell no, let them know what a horrible job they did butchering that steak. I wish we did not have other plans so we could have complained like hell and sent that garbage back to the kitchen, but we wanted to enjoy the ghost tour and the rest of our stay in Jefferson. We decided to pay the bill and get the hell out of there so we could make our tour only to find out they charged us $5 for my side or mushrooms that should have been my side. Payed it and will never step foot in that restaurant again. At the end of the day we payed $75 each for a dried out potato you had to choke down and an adult beverage, and it put a bad taste in our mouth for the rest of your trip. Should have gone to Applebees or Golden Corral or McDonalds. read more

Definitely skip this place. We waited over an hour for an appetizer of fresh Beira (carrots, cakes, celery) and our order of shrimp scampi Scampi tasted like someone had poured an entire can of pepper on them and the pasta was mush. Our waiter kept telling us the kitchen was backed up and eventually the manager came and apologized. They did give a 25% discount but hardly worth it. We left and went to McGarity's pub.... Always a better choice. Definitely skip this restaurant who has great ambitions but no ability to follow through. read more

Normally we love this place, last night was the exception. The service was some of the worst I've ever had. Almost 3 hrs for dinner! It would take 30-45 mins to get a drink, and about that long before we got the first. The server came back several times, 30 mins after we ordered to tell us something wasn't available, she was soo bad she even poured tea in my water. The couple that came with us will never go back, and I doubt we will after that. I wouldn't recommend going until they get new management or at least skilled servers read more
