My bike is probably 50 years old (and looks it). I've had it for 20 years and get it serviced every year or so as needed but it gets used a lot - it's a 1980's Schwinn "Beach-cruiser" - in quotes because it has gears and hand breaks unlike most cruisers. Just moved to Santa Barbara and got a flat on my back tire. I replaced the tube myself and but made a mess of the mechanics, my rear derailleur was shifting incorrectly and my last ride the chain fell off and the petal/crank had gone a little loose and needed attention. Yelp had good things to say about hazards but they refused to service my bike because the handlebars were too high and would be a safety/liability hazard for them. I guess the hypothetical of me getting hurt due to the handlebars after they service other parts of the bike is too scary/possibly litigious. To add a little insult to injury they suggested I buy one of their on sale cruisers because it would be about the same price as fixing my bike - even though they never quoted the work. It was a head scratcher for me, never had this issue or comment before from a bike shop but it was clear they didn't want my business or to work on my bike. The handles are high but they have been that way for 20 years - also a slight bend in it that so they hypothesized they couldn't bring it down if they tried. I think they assumed by the look of my bike that it was an old rust bucket that was just pulled deep out of a garage and not something that is used regularly - either way it felt like they sized me up and told me to kick rocks without a recommendation for Ended up taking it elsewhere, no comments about my handlebars... My husband and I decided today was the day our biking journey would begin with our 1yr old daughter. We early got over to SB, parked and got ready to ride. I placed my foot on my petal and I heard a snap! My bike chain was off, this other chunk was bent and Day 1 of biking was not off to a great start :( My Husband, the optimist, led the way as we stopped at three bike rental shops in the area in the hopes that they could recommend a repair shop nearby... each shop didn't have a recommendation. Awful. I thought this town was friendly... Is this SB? Finally, we went by bike rental shop #4 and the guy at the front desk referred us to Hazards. I called the shop and spoke to the nicest man. I explained what had happened with my bike and he was very honest in explaining to me that without actually seeing the bike, he wouldn't be able to tell me whether he could fix it or not. He didn't want to get my hopes up but asked us to come by and he would gladly take a look. We made our way toward the shop. As we walked in we were greeted by friendly faces. The man I spoke with was in the back of the shop working on a bike. He came out front to look at the bike and said he could repair it in 30min. We said we would go grab a bite to eat and return. He offered to let us store my Husband bike at the shop. Very nice of him to do so. When we returned, my bike was ready. Before we left the kind man who saved the day said to my hubby... "by the way, I took a look at your bike ....since you're carrying precious cargo on it (my daughters seat is attached to my husbands bike) there's a wear issue with the back wheel. It doesn't need to be repaired now, but you definitely want to go easy on it". We were very appreciative of this man's above and beyond care and concern for his customers. So far, I've used their services twice: once to assemble a bike shipped to SB and a second time a few years later to tune up some components and overhaul the drive train. I threw my chain and messed up my derailleur in the middle of my ride. I limped my bike down to Hazard's; a very helpful and knowledgeable mechanic immediately fixed my bike -- no waiting! My e bike flatted. I thought I had the tools to repair it, but I didn't, so I schlepped a mile or so to Hazards. I expected to see Bruce, but ownership has changed to Specialized. Nonetheless, I received stellar service here today. Very nice team. They quoted me $50 labor if I wanted quick service, or $30 if I could wait till later in the day. Seemed a little expensive, but what isn't these days. Daniel worked at least a half hour on the tire and he wasn't slow. It wasn't as simple as a road bike tire, partly why I failed. My son took his 2-month-old bike in there for a disc brake service and apparently they upsold him on a tune up. $200 later the bike is almost exactly the same as it was prior to coming in there. It's a beautiful day in Santa Barbara when you can ride your bike in the bright summer, thanks to Hazards. Funny story, if your bike pops a tire in the middle of State Street and Haley, then Hazards is a must come for bike repairs and bike parts. I tried Reis but they didn't have the specialization nor people to add the tire for me, but Hazards had both...The end LOL. Anyways, it's a pretty awesome bike shop in a really good spot that had the unusual 650B tire and that I my nonstandard bike needed too. This was the EXACT tire I needed and usually I have to go online to order it since most shops I know don't carry it. The two guys working there were knowledgeable and friendly and pointed me to the exact tire that I needed. I also like how they did not upsell me anything and just went with the repair like I wanted. That's good stuff there. The cost was reasonable being in such a prime location so I was pleased with that. Threw it up on the stand and said the brakes and shifting was off, but said to come back within the hour and he would have it dialed in and cleaned up. What an absolute shame! Changed Ownership!!!!! Have been going here for years! Bruce is always my guy!! I was in a crash a couple weeks ago and took my bike in to have it checked over I sensed something off immediately! My eyes searched for Bruce, but could not see him. He is usually always there. But I thought it's summer maybe he finally took some time off. Well my dealings seemed non caring, matter of fact, more superficial! The guy put the bike on the work stand out in the shop and looked it over a bit. He then said does not look like major damage. I asked them to look over in detail and also do a tune up. It went from its nothing to you need a new chain, to you need new cassettes, to you need new wheels they are damaged (very possible it was a high impact crash) this all in messages left on my phone and NEVER having my calls answered and having to physically go check a week later on what was going on. To finally almost 2 weeks in being told by one of the guys that actually "Your bike is showing age, you should consider getting into a new one" (my bike is a Specialized Ruby 5 years old) it is not the newest and I am an event rider, so I do put a lot of miles on it, but you definitely get more than 5years from that bike! To be fair they did put on a set of loner wheels, so i could ride it whilst they searched fir new wheels! When I asked for Bruce I was told the shop is under new ownership! Well all of a sudden it all made sense!!! Apparently it sounds like it was bought by Specialized or another big brand trying to be better than the one guy go to shop. Of course they gonna try to talk you into buying new!!! I am so very sad that Bruce is gone!! The change was evident immediately...... time to look for a new place, sadly. Picked up my damaged bike bcs after how all that went down, i would just not be comfortable trusting them. I have been an avid cyclist in this town, even Club President once. I sincerely hope the Santa Barbara Cycling Community will think twice about going there and support the "little guy shop" where they always go the extra mile, rather than supporting big box. I think the guys tried there best under the circumstances but this place will never be the same again without Bruce! read more

I was on a short roadtrip to Santa Barbara with my old Trek Fuel Mountain bike. I stopped in to have a rear tire and both tubes replaced. Max was very helpful and courteous to my needs. He said to come back in a little while and he'd have the work done. Less than an hour had passed when I received a call from Max telling me that my bike was ready. When I got there I looked for a new helmet and Max again being helpful found the right helmet for the right price. He also informed me that the gear shift was not working correctly and should be replaced. If I was staying in town longer I would definitely had him replace it. If finding a Bianchi dealer isn't hard enough these guys helped me order some really hard to find pieces to finish my first build. Every time I walked in the door (which was quite a few times) they were more then willing to hunt down a spare, suggest and throw a shim on where I need one, and give me invaluable advice all at a walk in notice. I had looked for bike shops online and found most of them in Santa Barbara focus on beach cruiser rentals or sales. I came across these guys on accident but suppose that it was meant to be! I rented a demo bike from them at a very good price so that I could ride some of the local mountains. Besides being very friendly, they gave me advice on exactly where to ride and hit the nail on the head! I'm a Santa Barbara local. When I started getting in biking, I thought Hazard's would be the place to go. I was so wrong. The first time I went was to have a pedal replaced on a cruiser. They didn't even look at my bike. They told me they were too busy and didn't have the part and sent me to Velo Pro. I took their advice and went to Velo Pro where I was treated courteously and helped in a timely fashion. The second time I went to Hazard's was to fix my out-of-true back wheel. It took them a WEEK to fix my wheel AND about 3 days later the wheel was out of true again with a broken spoke. Also, 4 out of 6 nuts on the fender were never put back on when I picked it up from Hazards so the fender was bouncing all over the place. I took my bike back to Hazards for an explanation. I was simply told that the wheel was old and that they could true it again but it would just come out of true again. I asked why I wasn't told that in the first place instead of them taking my $60. I got a shoulder shrug in response. I took my bike to Bici Centro to learn how to fix it myself. Stand time+tutors+4 nuts+1 spoke=$4 at Bici Centro. BOO TO YOU HAZARDS!! read more

There's a reason this place has been around for 100 years! Service, respect, and great ownership! Bruce is a great guy, his demeanor and warmth fit right into the feel of the store. Not to mention the store's got something for every level. Bike-fitting is his specialty. Don't care how state-of-the-art a bike shop's fit system is. It's all about the bike fitter. Bruce's experience in bike fitting (recreational, road, triathlon) coupled with the new Guru system makes for the best bike fit in town. Along with bike service and fitting, Bruce and a number of the employees (Matt, Konnor) are triathletes and/or Ironman, who are receptive and able to share experience in multisport needs. Plethora of wetsuits and swim gear along the walls and possibly the most variety in Santa Barbara as far as race nutrition is concerned, practically a whole wall. While there are other bike shops in town, this one feels like home. Seems like I see Bruce's Hazard tent everywhere a triathlon or bike race happens. Not to mention many of the local groups in town wear the Hazard's logo on their kits. Not just your local bike shop, but one totally immersed in the culture and community of Santa Barbara. read more

Passed through Santa Barbara on the way north and decided to stop. I love bike shops and probably been in at least 30-40 in the past few years. I'm really not sure how this place rates 4.5 stars on Yelp. I walked around the store for a good 15 minutes, even used the filling stationesque bathroom, and was never once acknowledged by anyone. I did see one lowly mechanic in the back of the shop with his head stuck in a bottom bracket, but he never knew (or cared) that I was there. If I was a thief, I could have easily nicked a bike...but honestly there isn't much here to steal. Half the racks were empty and the other half had models that were 2-3 years old. I really HATE to knock a local bike shop, but it seems these guys gave up some time ago. On the other hand, the running shop next door was fantastic. Well staffed with a couple of friendly people, cool brands and a few unique clothing items I hadn't seen before. I spent $ here. read more
