Very disappointing experience. The bikes were clearly not in the best condition, but instead of taking accountability for the quality of their equipment, the staff seemed more interested in blaming the customer. The handlebars were sticky and felt disgusting, which immediately made me question how well the bikes are cleaned and maintained between rentals. When you're paying to rent a bike, you should expect equipment that is clean, safe, and properly maintained. What bothered me most was the lack of accountability. If there's an issue with the bikes, the business should listen to the customer, inspect the equipment, and work toward a solution--not automatically make the customer feel like they're the problem. We literally rode the bikes for 15 minutes around the block and returned them. The employee stated, "That's funny, because three other customers before you did not have any issues." The good: We had a Wheel Fun time indeed! It was $40 for 2 hours of a single surrey bike rental and $60 if you do more. We did 2 hours and it was really fun. There's a bike path along the beach that was gorgeous. It was all flat. It was easy to navigate the bike. Two people peddle while the left driver steers the wheel. Two kids can sit in the front and 3 people can sit inside. I'd highly recommend seeing Santa Barbara this way! We found street parking a block down. The bad: It would be nice if the above shade extended out a bit further to cover the kids sitting in the front. It would be nice if there were a shelf in the back or hook for backpacks/bags. We had a beach Bogg bag that we were able to hang on the cup holder. The interesting: They didn't check our license. Checking out a bike was super simple and quick. It was also super simple and quick to return it. I appreciated the ease and efficiency since I had toddlers with me. Helmets are optional. read more

We were staying in the Funk Zone last weekend and wanted to do something fun with the kids that wouldn't take much more than an hour. I saw a surrey going by on Cabrillo and I remembered our ride in 2010, when Matt B. and I were young and carefree, pedaling along the beach with our friends. Wheel Fun Rentals is still in business, renting out bikes and surreys by the hour. We walked up with our boys and were immediately set up with a little surrey parked out front, the blue one our five-year-old Leo B. said he wanted. Service was friendly and efficient. Matt signed a waiver while I kept Wade B. out of the staff-only area, where dozens of bikes and surreys were stored under some large ceiling fans that were very attractive to my two-year-old. We put helmets on our boys--included with the rental--and nestled them into the tiny seating/luggage rack in front of the surrey. Then we were off. The ride was more arduous than I remembered. I guess I was 15 years younger the first time around, and it's definitely possible that I pulled less weight than the other three adults. Surreys are awkward conveyances. They share as much DNA with grocery carts as they do with bicycles, and they're hard to maneuver with even the slightest variations in terrain. Matt bikes like 70 miles a week and he broke a sweat pedaling that surrey. It was still really fun, though, and relaxing despite the exercise. We followed the recommended path, which took us along the beach and down Los Patos, with the bird refuge and zoo to one side. We even caught a few glimpses of the giraffes. The best part, though, was watching the kids, who a) couldn't move and b) were having the time of their lives. Wheel Fun charges $40 for an hour, $50 for two, up from $36 with a free second hour in 2010. This feels reasonable to me, and I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived after 75 minutes and weren't charged for the second hour. Our kids loved the surrey and didn't want to get off. Wade asked to ride again as soon as we returned it, and continued to request surrey rides for the rest of our stay. I have a feeling we'll be back at Wheel Fun in the very near future. read more

I've always seen these types of activities in movies and shows, and I was always so envious of those romantic couples. While we were visiting Santa Barbara, my boyfriend casually suggested the surrey passively to be sweet and polite. To his regret I took him up on his offer later on in the day when we had some time to spare. The Single Surrey can seat up to 3 adults and 2 children and it was $40/hour. If you came by the visitor centers, they have a coupon for Wheel Fun Rentals in the city's map brochure. Instructions were pretty minimal and I entrusted my boyfriend with the job of steering and braking. I helped with the pedaling but the wheel on my side was decorative. So I knew we could only utilize the surrey on the bike path but the struggle was which route to get to the bike path and getting back to the shop. The pedestrians did not watch where they were walking and the cars were scary too. It was so much more stressful than I imagined and a lot more work too. Once you get the hang of it, you can enjoy the beach side adventure. It also helps if you stay close with other biking or surrey groups so you can get some protection from the pedestrians and cars. I felt so sweaty and not as cute as I imagine in those romantic comedies. My poor boyfriend always gets dragged into those gimmicky activities to amuse me. I super appreciate how he's such a good sport about it. I had fun and enjoyed trying it once, but I don't think this is something I would do on a recurring basis. read more

I was not expecting to have my inner child come out! This was unexpectedly a really fun experience! Each time I went with friends, we got the single surrey for an hour ($40). Split amongst everyone, it comes to about $10 per person. One person is in charge of driving/ steering while everyone else joins in to pedal. The workers give you instructions at the beginning on how to brake the surrey and then you're on your own. It is overwhelming the first time you exit since you're riding along the street but once you're on the sidewalk, you feel safer. There are two paths you can take. The first time, my two friends and I struggled to finish the route that leads left within an hour. We even got caught at the bottom of a bit of a decline and a couple of strangers came to help push us. It was embarrassing but also hilarious. The second time I rented out a surrey, we managed to get through the entire route with a total of four of us. Having 4 total passengers makes the experience a lot easier. We were able to stop by the grass to enjoy some outdoor music. They do give you about a 10-15 minute window to turn in your surrey so you don't have to pay for the extra hour. If you do go over, the additional hour is just an additional $10. read more

I am so glad we were able to rent a large surrey and pedal around the bay. This is a crazy fun way to see the coastline in Santa Barbara. Keep in mind, you are the power to drive this "bike" and you must pedal. We did not make a reservation. It was a Tuesday morning and we walked up and rented it for an hour. I don't think we needed to rent it longer than that. We were sore from pedaling. The seats DON'T ADJUST!! If you are short it's going to be a challenge to reach the pedals. Process was quick and straightforward. One person had to sign a waiver and put their card down for a deposit (you're not charged until you return the rental). We left the site with our rental at 5:30pm and had to return it by 6:30pm since they close at 7pm. The 1 hr was more than enough -- the pedaling is tiring! The bike lane along the shore was so beautiful & overall we had a really pleasant and fun ride. We returned our rental at 6:30pm and that's when my card on file was charged. We love Wheel Fun and it's one of our go to biking rental places since they have so many locations everywhere! Originally, we visited because we wanted to rent out a moke, butt apparently they didn't have any (although we did see one in the back, it was probably charging though). So instead we rented out two choppers and two cruiser bikes and we had a super fun time riding around the beach biking path! You can bike to the marketplace and check out their clothes, jewelry and food stands they have there as well. The chopper bikes are really really fun and I definitely recommend it if you are bored of your regular bike. It's much more comfortable since you are sitting down and pushing forward and it's really easy and fast. Mokes are electric open-top jeeps that can be driven up to 35 mph on non-highway streets. We cruised throughout Santa Barbara and drove close to the sand and water with wind blowing through our hair. Prices were EXTREMELY reasonable for the two-hour use compared to similar adventures in other cities. This spot also has hundreds of bikes and other peddle carts available to rent but the Moke was perfect for an afternoon of relaxation without the work. I highly recommend this adventure while in SB and we will rent from here again in the future! Reservations are recommended as the number of Mokes are limited. Before we came to visit Santa Barbara we looked up things to do with the kids. We reserved a Moke. When we got there they told us that we didn't reserve and pay for one. Should the manager the confirmation and the payment then he said he doesn't know why it did that because they weren't renting out the Mokes that particular day. After waiting 20 minutes he finally rented us one. I asked if the cleaners and wipes down he said yes. We got in and explored. The kids told us the back was dirty so when we stopped and pulled over I had antibacterial wipes and wipes the whole inside of the Moke down and it was filthy. Mind you this is during the pandemic and as guild lines from OSHA and CDC businesses need to follow a strict cleaning schedule. Just based off that we didn't reserve anything else from them which we had planned on doing. We enjoyed the Moke and so did the kids. What I didn't enjoy was taking the time out of our 2 hour rental to clean the vehicle when it should have been cleaned by them. read more
