I bought a new E-scooter. the brakes rubbed slightly and needed adjustment. I was unable to solve the problem myself and called around looking for a shop that would help. To be clear, the adjustment was of the disc brakes which are the same as those you'd find on a bicycle - not anything having to do with the motor or E-functions. However, other bike shops refused to even look at it, seemingly hostile when called??!! Varsity told me to come right on in and fixed it while I waited. I assumed it was something an experienced bike mechanic could fix quickly, or if not, diagnose a bent rotor that needed replacement. THAT was why I sought assistance. He WAS able to make the adjustment in minutes and was pleasant throughout Anyway, after calling around and facing rude responses with refusal to assist from several bike shops (and the only scooter shop in town) Varsity was willing to assist, did it quickly while I waited and solved the problem completely. THANK YOU for your help it is greatly appreciated. 5 stars for helping when others refused, doing so in a timely manner, and generally having a nice "can do" attitude. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! read more

As a host at El Capitan State Beach Park I see some great great things. I never thought I would be motivated to write about a bike shop!! Hikers and Bikers from all over the world come through and for $10 can spend the night, use the beach, and watch the ocean. A young buck from South Carolina flies into LA, buys a Huffie at Walmart, and heads out.....he makes it to El Cap and flats! He decides to call the closest bike shop......a Varsity tech jumps on his 99 customized steel frame, rides 13+miles to El Cap with a patch kit, gives the young Nepalese nubie a repair and an extra kit + an education and rides back to Varsity 13+ miles on the 101!! These guys are cool, and they get done what you need done. Not the most conversational folks, so it kinda feels like you're in a car repair shop with regards to the service and interaction level. At the end of the day though, they'll get you set up with your bike, tell you the truth about different products and solutions to your issues, and keep their word. They're usually pretty booked up for work orders, but can usually get a repair finished in 3 days or so. I came here to purchase a pretty standard 6KU Fixie, and they ordered + built it for me for some $400 or so. I'm not sure what other options there are in town for ordering bikes, but I know there are repair shop alternatives. I only had my one experience with these guys and it was a pleasant one, so I'd recommend giving them a shot. read more

Both great service but I try my best to utilize the shop as often as possible. The shop stand by their service and product. Steve is a SB local and he's friendly and cares about providing students with quality service at affordable prices. I came in for a new inner tube and he fixed my bike up in 10-15 minutes. The new inner tube cost about $10. I was surprised how quick he finished my bike. I've been here a couple times for new tires and other things, and his friendly and efficient service never disappoints. The new storefront has lots of new bikes for sale. He also has free air in the back of his store so you don't have to run all the way to campus if your bike is flat. Support your local businessman! read more

Brought bike to the shop. They changed tubes. 2 days later I got a flat tire again.bring it back they said probably another leak and we paid for another tube change. Actually they didn't do anything with the flats . Caused we know that when we're brought our bike back and it onthe bikes rack for exactly 2 day and the bike not even on the road we're finding out is the same flat tire problem . I went to Varsity in need of a repair on my bike's chain and brake line, and they did a great job. I agreed to drop off my bike and pick up in a day or two because they said they were a bit backed up, but they finished in the same day. They have helped so many kids get acclimated to their first time being away from parents and being honest with how many bikes get stolen and how careful you have to be in to register them with the police department in the hopes of getting your bike back. Dropped off a disc brake bike for brake adjustment. The work took twice as long as expected and when I was contacted to pick the bike up, I found out they had forgotten to do the front brake. The day after picking the bike up I was contacted because they "found" some parts on their workbench. They had returned the bike to me without the cotter pin that attaches the brake pads. The brake adjustment was poorly done and some fasteners were loose. Sloppy work that took double the promised time and required two trips back to the shop because they didn't put all the parts back on the bike. Spend a few extra dollars and go to Bicycle Bob's. read more

My daughter is a new freshman at UCSB and uses her bike daily (no car). When she left class and found her bike unrideable due to the handlebars becoming misaligned with the front tire, it was bad news! Came in the Sunday before classes started to get a new front rim/tire since it got stolen and to replace my back tire. I was helped out super quickly by Steve, the owner, who immediately gave me an estimate on how much I'd be spending, which I really appreciated. I left my bike with him for a few days since he didn't have the rims I wanted in stock yet. Came back on Wednesday and he hadn't gotten to my bike yet since they had just received the shipment earlier that day and he got to work on it right away. I only had to wait about 15-20 minutes for everything and this was with people coming in and out of the store with their bikes asking him things. Super quick and efficient. Definitely my go-to place for all my bike needs. I'm also really liking the expanded store because there's more room to move around and it's not as cramped as it was before. Tip: He stores bikes during the summer and gives them a free tune up! They're stored in a storage unit too so no worries about it getting stolen or rusty! If I knew about this before I totally would've done this but sadly I'm only finding out about this during my last quarter at UCSB :( read more

I wouldn't recommend this store, nor ANY store in IV, for actually buying a bicycle, but this place is the best for tune-ups and repairs. The owners are so nice and they often don't even charge for small services, such as bending your fender back into place. Even a popped tire cost me around six dollars. They are really fair. The employees are also very friendly and helpful. And as far as I know, this place offers the cheapest tune-ups around, which is great for UCSB students since college/ocean spray is really hard on your bike. read more

While in the Santa Barbara area on vacation this past August, my wife's bike needed emergency repair to the rear wheel. Somehow it was severely bent while on the bike rack of our truck. We drove over to Varsity shortly after they opened on a Friday morning. They were wonderful. The man came out to our truck, had a look, and took the wheel off the bike while it was still on the rack so we didn't have to hassle with that. Told us to return in an hour. When we got back, it was all fixed better than new. I won't tell you what he charged, but it was incredibly reasonable. We were expecting more, so we gave him enough tip to buy his lunch. If we lived in the area and need a new bike, we would buy from them in a second. With service like that you can't go wrong. read more

This place is great. I've bought two bikes here and often bring my bicycle by for service when it needs it and I'm nearby, and I've always been impressed. Both bicycles, and everything else I've bought here, were reasonably priced; the owner has sometimes installed a part for free if it involved minimal labor. He always diagnoses problems quickly and never in my experience has he been wrong. Work gets done quickly, too. And he's said something that I wish more places who do skilled labor would say to me: "You don't need what you thought you needed when you came in. Let me do something less expensive that will actually fix the problem." Really great store, here. read more

One of the best bike shops I've been to, period. Service is always great, and prices are always fair. My u-lock was rusted shut, and I couldn't get it open despite trying for about an hour. Needed to get to class, so I called up VBS, and Steve drove and CAME TO ME. Unlocked my bike in a matter of minutes, and told me to pay whenever because I didn't have cash on hand. Biked immediately over and the whole deal only costed me $5. For all your bike related needs, save yourself the trouble and money and go to Varsity Bike Shop. Fantastic service. Steven was by far one of the best salesmen I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I came in looking for a bike, with no idea what I was looking for and he helped me find one that I feel is perfect for me. He replaced my wheel colors and handlebar grips free of charge, gave me a $10 discount off of a $35 lock, and even threw in a bell for free. Very friendly staff, great guy, excellent service. Would recommend. I'm headed back in a day or two to have the second handbrake installed on my bike. Update: was looking through my reviews, and wanted to add: sold the first bike I got here (no problems, I loved it, just wanted an upgrade), got a different one from here, and I love it too. In 1983 I bought one of the first reasonably priced, commercially produced mountain bikes ("Black Diamond" brand) at this shop. It's been to Japan with me and I still ride it around town daily. I added a photo of it just for fun. I was introducing my high school daughter to UCSB and IV last week. I stopped in to see the owner and compliment him on the longevity of his merchandise. I bought my bike from these guys around 2 years ago after I had just gotten into an accident with a car on my old bike. They were super knowledgeable about bikes in general and ending up selling me a bike that I still enjoy riding to this day. There have been no major issues with the bike at all. To top it all off, their prices are extremely competitive and the people running the shop are very nice. They always let me use their compressor for free air to fill my ties when I stop by and say that I bought my bike from them! blake was so nice and helpful! i went to the other bike shop in IV and they were helpful, but varsity bike shop went the extra mile. they taught me a lot about bikes so that i knew what i was buying and their prices are super fair too. they let me test drive in the parking lot and helped me find the best fit. they even stayed open more than a half hour past close just to finish my bike. they store bikes over winter & summer breaks for about the same as the UCSB campus but they offer a tune up with the storage. you can come back within 30 days to fix anything with the bike and get a tune up 30 days after your purchase date (also free). so happy with my cute new bike and so thankful for all their help!!! will definitely come back for more services and recommend anyone who wants a good priced bike that will last them a long time. read more

My favorite bike shop here. I found a beach cruiser off craigs list, then bought it to this shop to make sure it's in decent condition. The owner, Steven, re-adjusted my bike, corrected the alignment, & pumped air for free! It was a quick fix, but not many places around here are that generous.
