I go out of my way to shop at Hazel's, which says a lot. The selection is essentially unrivaled (the real estate devoted to cold beer is the stuff of Homer Simpson's drooling dreams), the place is always sparkling clean, and the pricing is competitive, especially if you shop their sales and Sunday morning specials. The staff is universally friendly and helpful. What makes Hazel's really stand out is the expertise. Major shout out to Rob, who is a tremendous wine resource and a genuinely congenial guy. If you know wine well, Rob can speak in shorthand code to confirm your choices and also give suggestions within your palette and price point. If you are a rookie, no problem, Rob or any number of fine folks will gladly be generous with time and advice. Great selection of wines and alcohol, but why such a rude attitude when asking for IDs? We have been in here several times and they immediately ask for IDs, even though half the time we are older than the college students working for them. What a joke!! I only get asked for my ID when I am here, no other liquor stores, bars, restaurants , hotels etc. it's absurd. It's nice and new and not cluttered. Agree with the other poster about the sales staff not being helpful in the wine department. Took them 10-15 minutes wandering around to find the bottle I was looking for - the original guy gave up and said they didn't have it. I asked someone else and she did take me right to the bottle, which was $3 more than what I've paid for it at Liquor Mart or even the Whole Paycheck liquor store. The selection here is incredible. I'll still stay away as often as I can. I only go to Hazel if I'm looking for either a really good deal that I saw highlighted in an ad or if there's something very specific I'm looking for that I can't find anywhere else. The reason being that I've had numerous bad experiences with rude staff. I work near hazel and live closer to Superior Liquor. I've never had a complaint with Superior- they are actually great in any situation. I'm certain I've never been here looking for a specific item and not been able to find it, save a few variations of Yamazaki Japanese Whiskeys. The staff might be a bit lackadaisical, but give them a break - it's a pretty chill work environment (no pun intended). In the end, they are always helpful in finding what I cannot, and even have great suggestions on some beers I've never tried. Good selection but was treated very poorly by the cashier. While I was buying alcohol, my boyfriend was with me. Despite me obviously paying for everything with my card, the cashier only looked and spoke to my boyfriend, asking him if he wants a bag for the bottles, and if he needed a receipt. Cmon, how sexist can you be?? He wasn't even standing next to me where the card reader was and was standing behind me near the beginning of the conveyor belt. Selection: this is a huge store and has quite a bit of a selection, however it doesn't mean that they always have the best of the best in everything particularly in imports. Staff: most of the staff is actually really friendly and knowledgeable. The few times I have gone there and always trying to get help, I'm greeted and given the service. So on this end I'd like to give it a 5 star. Prices are average. Sometimes a little bit better than the smaller shops as they can purchase more in volume. It'd have been perfect if they offer you a discount when you purchase half a dozen or more though like other shops. The design of the shop is also very appealing and the shop is always kept clean. Finally found a place that does pick 6. The only problem.. they're way over-priced. The cheapest beer was $2... add that up and you've got yourself a $12 6-pack... which to me is a major rip off. I think I'll stick to taking my chances on buying regular 6-packs with a couple of friends and we can do trades. Other than that, they have a pretty good selection of beers and hard liquor. I didn't get a chance to look at their wines. Their prices were reasonable (except for the pick 6). If I'm in Boulder, I may stop by again. This is my go-to liquor store that I drive 20 miles to get to... Happily! Consistently AMAZING STAFF working here (same people day in day out and they love working here clearly). The store is huge... I agree with previous reviews. Forcing you to get a card really blows. I hate having to carry a card everywhere I go. The prices are on par with Applejack and it has maybe the best beer selection I have seen in CO. The bomber selection isn't as good as Tipsy's but it has an overwhelmingly long wall of microbrews to choose from - some I haven't seen yet in CO. Keg prices were decent ($60 for 1/6 barrel of Dale's Pale, $55 for Avery IPA). I can't speak for wine prices. Parking is a terrible setup. I feel like I'm going to get clocked pulling in or out. That said, I did in this situation, and found that a lot of people bashing this place for some entertaining reasons. Two reviews near each other that made me smile, one was bashing Hazel's for not having enough people to help, the other was bashing Hazel's for having to many people to help. Other bashing this place for being too big, and having too much stuff. Many of them bashing this place for their rewards program, which you need to sign up for to get special pricing. Really?!?!?! Is this that big of a deal at this point in our society? No one is forcing anyone to sign up for it, but if you want a deal, they would like some information as well. It helps marketing, which you get more information on future sales about. If it is that big of an offense to your world, don't sign up and pay the extra amount, but don't get the cheaper amount and then (@&#@( about it after. Ok, off my soap box, all that said, I found this place to be OK, not amazing, but far from bad. The pricing seemed to be decent, not exceptional, but not crazy high either. The selection was well above average, in really every section that we shopped in. Wine, Spirits and Beer. The high end beer selection was vast, but not amazing. They had lots of stuff, but nothing that unique that I hadn't seen in many other places. Strangely enough, I think our favorite part of Hazel's was the digital pricing. Yes, trivial, but unique and novel. The cold, sterile aspect of the place on a whole keeps be from bumping it up higher, but that may change over time. Hazel's is by far the best liquor store in Boulder, and one of the best period. It has an amazing selection of alcohol and wine, with some very hard to find options that are out of this world. They've started getting Havana Club Rum in from Cuba, and some amazing scotches like Springbank (if you haven't tried Springbank you don't know scotch) and Bunnahabhain. Their selection of gin and bourbon are also exemplary and make sure to show off the local distilleries. Their beer collection is extensive and they have something for everyone. Tons of local beers. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. If you're looking for a great wine ask for Bill, his selection capabilities are impeccable. He can find a wine for any palate and preference as well as price. They have the best Humidor and selection of cigars in town as well. Make sure you sign up for the Z-card (it's like a kroger or king soopers card) to take full advantage of all their great deals. Plus, you earn points that translate as cash at the end of the year, all for drinking which is what you were going to do anyways you lush. read more

I went into the store this morning to purchase 8 bottles of wine for Xmas gifts. One of the wines I was looking for they were out of. The prices seemed reasonable so I went to checkout. I was asked if I was a rewards member, I said no. Then the clerk informed me that the advertised prices were for reward members and would I like to sign up. I said, no I already get enough junk email. I was then informed that the price of the wine was $6 more per bottle for not being a rewards member! I must have stood in front of the massive cold beer selection trying to figure out what to buy for my softball team for 20 minutes and no one came over to ask me for help. I do like it that they send me specials via their buying club, but again, I only go there if I'm in a hurry and know what I want. This is probably the most elaborate liquor store I have ever visited, complete with plane replicas hanging from the ceiling. We didn't spend as much time in here as I would've liked (we were with friends who are locals and therefore knew exactly what they wanted and where it was) but I got to check out their beer selection which was HUGE. The pick your own six pack deal, yes a lot of people have called it over-priced, but that was the single greatest $11 six pack I could have ever bought because it was entirely designed by me. I did notice that there's a bit of a discount they do at the register because every beer I grabbed was listed as at least $2.50 but when I got to the counter, I was only charged $11. Next time I'm in Boulder, I'm going back to this place and spending an hour exploring their liquor and wine sections. read more

I would rather go to Liquor Mart when I am in Boulder. I went into Hazel's today astounded that they had NO GIFT SETS for the holidays and ONE shelf of glassware for gifts. I have been to many liquor stores during this holiday season and all of the others had 10+ gift sets and a nice aisle of glassware. I asked an employee and he told me money is lost on the gift sets, as they would have to pay more and charge more. Interesting because the last few liquor stores I have been in with gift sets are charging the same price for the set and just the bottle. Want holiday customers? GET GIFT SETS. You are the largest liquor store in BOULDER. You should want to sell liquor-related items (and have a bigger selection than your puny shelf in the back with 2 different shot glasses) as opposed to just booze. 2 stars is for the wide variety of alcohol they have. I've only been in there a couple times but I did not like the feel of the place. It's like the Target of liquor stores. Where are the smiles? Everyone says their prices are good but there is nothing really special about it. They also never give any prices in their ads. How is one supposed to plan? I do like their nice new beer coolers but the layout and experience was bland and they do NOT have the biggest selection around like they say.
