Even though this pandemic turned everyone's routine upside down, the school is still encouraging the kids to get involved in clubs (done after school). My daughter is in Speech and Debate and use to be so shy to talk in front of others. The teacher really pulls the kids out of their comfort zone, and encourages the kids to really engage with each other. Although the clubs are virtual, the kids still meet new friends, exchange numbers and even reconnect with friends they haven't seen since before the pandemic. The kids still get acknowledged by the staff, recognized for honor roll and we received an email that had an award for our daughter. Thank you Maywood staff for keeping these kids engaged, active and for giving the kids credit when they do amazing things. We will all be back to school soon, we're counting down the days at our house.

My elementary school aged son has struggled with writing for years. He has a good understanding of…read morewriting concepts and grammar but gets easily overwhelmed when it comes to putting his thoughts on paper. He's starting middle school next year and my wife and I had hoped that Sylvan would be able to help him gain more confidence and work through some of the mental blocks he has when tackling writing assignments. When we signed him up for classes at Sylvan, we expected that he would receive tailored, individualized tutoring to reinforce the concepts he already knows, help build his confidence, and provide techniques and strategies for not worrying about getting it perfect the first time. Unfortunately, the lessons ended up being very boilerplate with minimal customization. The majority of each lesson was spent rehashing grammar concepts he largely already knows, and typically would only spend a few minutes on the creative process of writing. There was also significantly less one-on-one time than we expected, and he spent the majority of the time working on his own on a tablet. We hoped to discuss our concerns during our monthly meeting with the center director, but unfortunately the meetings ended up getting canceled at the last minute three times in a row so we finally just decided to pull him out at the end of the month. The staff are very nice but it certainly wasn't worth the very high cost, and I wouldn't recommend Sylvan for anyone in a similar situation to ours. Maybe it's better for older students or for students who need help with more defined, linear concepts like math or science.

My kid was reluctant to go to swimming classes after a long break but when I told her Ms Audrey will be taking the classes, she readily agreed. Ms Audrey is punctual, engaging and very friendly. She deals with the kids very patiently and is aware of their skill levels hence teaching them as per their needs. My kid has learnt a lot with her and is confident in getting into water. The pool is clean and warm enough that my kid has never complained about the water being cold. Sufficient parking is available.

Our family has had two very different experiences at Kinderswimmer…read more My son was enrolled here for several years. Because the classes are only 30 minutes and shared among four children, it took some time (multiple years) for him to become a fully independent swimmer, but he did eventually get there. His instructors, especially Ms. Jada, were core to his success and we loved her. Unfortunately, the quality declined significantly by the time my daughter started. The facility seems to be facing high staff turnover, resulting in frequent class cancellations. When substitute teachers were brought in, they often appeared undertrained and disengaged. The turning point for us was a severe SAFETY INCIDENT that led to our immediate withdrawal. During a lesson, a substitute instructor remained in the shallow end with her back turned while my daughter was noticeably struggling in the deep end. This was not the first time I had witnessed an instructor positioning themselves poorly or failing to scan the pool. Despite another parent also shouting to get the instructor's attention, she did not respond. I ULTIMATELY HAD TO JUMP INTO THE POOL FULLY CLOTHED TO RESCUE MY DAUGHTER. Following the incident, the instructor never acknowledged what happened or checked on my daughter's well-being. Management did not contact me until I emailed them to withdraw and request a full refund. To their credit, the owners processed the refund without question and attempted to call me to discuss the matter. They also offered me a month of free lessons and tried to assure me the issue had been addressed with the teacher. However, there is no acceptable explanation for an instructor completely ignoring swimmers or standing on the wrong side of the pool. While I appreciate management's immediate response, safety and trust cannot be bought back with a credit.

Leadership is a great influence if you wanna show the kindergartners how to behave as they move on in life, I love this school with all my heart. My 5th Grade teacher is Ms. Kawachi, she is the best teacher i could ever ask for. Show her some love if your moving onto 5th grade, also Ms. Kawachi is possibly getting a new job at McKnight! And, please show some love to Ms. Lauritsen, she's moving to a different school since she lives in Tacoma now :(. Ms. Wesley is a Kindergartener teacher in 2023, she allows 5th graders to help in her classroom, she's very sweet ! Decided between here or bellevue college at the beginning of my 2nd college round in life. Rtc lost…read morebecause of how unprofessional they handled my application. (5 yrs ago experience). The first issue I had was the phones kept ringing like no one wanted to answer them. Then they complained when they had to answer them. I set up multiple appts to get into a consular only to show up and the person wasn't there. Or because I was a mid 30 yr old at the time requested to leave because they thought I was out of place. After multiple attempts I finally got thru to the consular. They began to belittle my choices of technical degrees and started pushing them like it was a business. I'm sorry but since when do you have say in what I can and can not take? That would be their college pushing classes like a business instead of what the student wants to take. I had tons of credits from a couple other colleges and they said none of them would transfer in and I'd have to start fresh. Another money gimmick grab by the college. I had a clutter fuck mess issue when trying to take the placement test for english/math. I wondered over paid and came over to the testing center and I had set up an appt with them. The rep had belittled me and challenged me for even being there and complained about it. Twice I had to wonder back to the consular to inform them of the issue and he had to come over and yell at her to let me take it. That was another red flag. I had completed thru lvl 250 at bellevue college and their test was so poorly constructed that they said I would need remedial classes because they were not sure. Okay that's a red flag. I completed thru 98 (at the time) for math at bc and they said I'd have to start in remedial classes. I know I scored high on their test but something was fishy about it when they tried to place me in remedial classes. Yea that boosts my confidence as a could be student. As I tried to become an active student by the third red flag issue I decided to go to bellevue college. The rep said I needed to collect a ton of paper work so I did and came back. I repeatedly got requested to leave because my age deemed me "Out of place" and after the second time I told them look I'm trying to apply if you people do not want me here I shall not attend. You lost a could of been student that day. Over the years I have taken certificate classes/courses and never had this much of an issue with their college. But this was also back when it was a technical school not a college. When rtc became a college that's when it all changed into a clutter f* mess. Do not attend here. I price compared with bc and bc is about 30% cheaper than rtc. Don't believe me? Do the math. Parking is a bit of an issue with the campus. There's never enough parking and when I did my technical classes earlier in life parking was always full. I had to neighborhood park at your own risk and walk over or park at far end of camapus and walk over to the class area.

As someone with a good…read moreacademic standing from middle to high school, I reserve the right to say that many of their staff were authoritative red guards and unqualified to teach. The rules are highly restrictive and the school has too many policies, resulting in rebellious and hateful attitudes towards the administrative staff. You're not allowed to use your phone at ANY time of the day including lunch and you are required to be seated at all times in the cafeteria. No student is allowed to carry a backpack or bag of any kind, so they are required to use their locker or carry by hand. You are not allowed to have bags or any school materials during lunch. Their programs are terrible and lacking in advanced STEM courses to prepare for high school. It's ironic how they hang up posters that display, "failure is not an option" because at McKnight, failure is on their agenda.
