Personal training with Maddie. I truly enjoy working with Maddie as my personal trainer. I started training with her to address some deficiencies related to an injury, and she immediately created a customized plan that took my limitations into account while protecting me from further harm. Maddie makes every workout enjoyable with her easygoing personality. She strikes the perfect balance between pushing me and encouraging me without ever feeling overbearing. She's incredibly knowledgeable about body mechanics, anatomy, and movement, and always demonstrates each exercise beforehand so I have a clear visual. Today I had my second appointment with Anthony for deep tissue massage therapy and I've gotta say absolutely amazing. I have a failed cervical fusion and spinal fusion and between my training with maddie and my deep tissue with Anthony. I am happy to say it helps me avoid medication. Anthony doesn't play around. He gets deep into those knots as my job tends to carry a lot of stress management in it and because of my accident I carry all that stress in knots between my shoulder blades. Hands down one of the best gyms in Orange County -- and I've trained at a lot of them. HB Strength Co. checks every box for me. The 24/7 access is huge, especially with a busy schedule, and the facility is always clean and well kept. The recovery room being private and personal is a big plus too -- not something you find at most gyms. When I joined I went through the whole I can this on my own and why pay someone to stand around and tell me what I already know. Apparently I didn't know much Barrett is very resourceful at mixing things up and making sure that the routine is never routine. Just when you think you know what he is going to have you do, he changes it and an entire new set of muscles you didn't even know you had will be sore. Barrett also does a great job keeping you just distracted enough to not release what you are doing. I started up a few months ago and I am so grateful that I did!! From the trainers, to the programs, to the friendly faces that I see 3-4x a week, I thoroughly enjoy coming in and putting in the work. Prior to starting my program, I had never used a personal trainer, and hadn't seen much change in my appearance for years despite going to the gym regularly. That said, I'm in my mid-20s, healthy, and not overweight. My goals were simply to lose body fat and gain muscle, and wanted to try something new to get the results I was looking for. I'm glad I did! Prior to starting my program, I went about resolving fitness-related questions by doing my own internet research or asking knowledgeable friends. Considering how unreliable this information had been, I saw my 6 month commitment (and justified the cost) as an education in fitness, during which I could ask an expert about nutrition, supplementation, training routines, and technique. More importantly, I was able to get the answers to these questions as they related to my fitness goals. After my initial consultation, my trainer and I agreed on a muscle building program. I began coming in three days a week, and we focused on free weights and barbell training. In the few months since, my strength improved dramatically - though I still remember the crippling soreness that came with my first few sessions (It's worth it!). Matt and Aaron have both advised me on nutrition and supplements, and the new Kick Start program has been great for building responsible and effective eating habits! Aaron is the newest addition to the Main St. facility. He's an excellent, professional trainer and very easy to talk to. He's serious about helping his clients reach their goals, and has even reached out to me on my "off days" to make sure I'm sticking with my schedule. He has a background in competitive weightlifting, and has helped me greatly improve my technique in exercises such as squats and deadlifts, where the combination of bad form and heavy weight can cause great injury. He's always in a positive mood and encouraging, which is especially great for early 5am training sessions! The gym itself is very well-equipped, with everything you would need to complete your day's training. Soft towels are readily available, and there is a shower onsite as well. The recently-installed air conditioner/heaters are great for cold mornings and hot summer days. Since all sessions are by appointment only, it's possible to do circuits with different machines that would be practically impossible in a big-box gym like 24 Hour Fitness or Equinox without drawing the ire of fellow patrons. This also means never having to wait for the right machine or weights, which is great! Finally, the environment is what makes The Training Spot stand out. The staff and trainers all make an effort to get to know you, and the result is a friendly, welcoming environment for people at all fitness levels. Came here to meet with the owners, Paul and Carolyn Fetters. They are super nice and very professional and maintain the feel of the casual business owners of HB. The gym itself is small but VERY well equipped with Life Fitness equipment and plenty of workout stations and free weights for a complete workout. Very clean and organized and just enough room to get the job done. Quiet and intimate private ownership allows clients to feel at home and close with their trainers. TSpot is almost like a home and from what I learned, the clients are long term and are like family. They are committed, hard working, and the Fetters do a great job at taking care of everyone who walks through their doors. I'd come here for training if I were in the market and lived in HB. I love The Training Spot! The owners are great :) This gym really makes you feel like you are part of the family. I train with Diane but I've done boot camp with Mike also. Both are great! I'm currently doing this challenge called TakeDown. It's $250 for a 6 week meal plan with free boot camps and hikes. The recipes are always delicious. My fiance hates anything that seems "healthy" but he hasn't complained about anything I've been making lately! I've also already lost 10lbs and it's only the second week! This is the first yelp review I have written, but hoping this helps someone get over the hump of whether to give The Training Spot a shot. This may be the best investment you can make in yourself.... I am only 3 weeks into the program and I am already down 15 lbs, going from a size 34 waist to a 32, just in time for my beach vacation! I feel stronger (after the soreness subsided of course), can play with my daughter longer, and have so much more energy during the day. My main concern coming in was not getting a great return out of the program since I travel weekly and it is close to impossible to lock down any routine in my schedule. The great part about the Training Spot is that it is not a gym membership, you pay for the number of sessions you will use for the month. This allowed me to get in a few sessions a week with Matt and Barrett and, if I cannot make the number of sessions I signed up for, they have no problem letting my wife step in to take an extra session. And both Matt and Barrett are sensational. They are both very friendly and supportive, tailor great workout sessions that make the hour fly by, and even hook me up with routines I can use during the week while I am traveling. Their only goal is to help you meet yours, so if you are serious about making a change, they will definitely give you the tools to succeed. Also, I signed up for the Takedown Lifestyle program, which connected me with my amazing nutritionist Autumn. She has taught me how to read food labels, weigh my food, and eat healthy, even when I am on the road. Their nutrition plan is really great (don't call it a diet, cause it isn't), I eat better food more often and never feel hungry or like I am missing out on my favorite foods, because I can incorporate those favorite foods into my plan. Well, I've just completed my 3rd month as a Training Spot member and here's where I stand... Basically, I've joined a lot of gyms in my life. A lot. Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness, etc... My wife likes to call me a "Very enthusiastic gym joiner" with the implied message that I don't tend to do much more than join. It's a bit of an exaggeration but not far off the mark. I hate working out. I hate going to the gym. I hate people who like to go to the gym. But I've put on an extra 20lbs over the last ten years and was starting to get worried about how much I was huffing and puffing after playing for ten minutes with my daughter. So I signed-up and have been pretty much faithfully training with Barrett at the TS Main Street location. The result is that I'm probably in the best shape of my life already. Granted, it wasn't too high of a bar to climb over, but the fact that I've been consistently showing up and working out hard three days a week really feels like a miracle to both myself and my wife who, at first, was a little worried about the not incidental expense of group training vs. a simple gym membership. But so far we both consider it one of the best investments of my 40-something life. I think the key for anyone like myself, who wants to get in shape but just hates the mere thought of going to the gym, is that the scheduled trainer-led groups of 5 or 6 people means I have an obligation to show up. It also means that I won't just wander around casually jumping on some random machine after another, but have a focused pro showing me what to do and tracking my progress. I need that. While not "cheap", it's a much more reasonable alternative to the crazy expense of private personal training. I'm now about to embark on the month-long Takedown Challenge which is a combo nutrition/fitness/weight-loss program which I hope will help me get a little more serious about the diet portion of my regimen and drop the extra fat from my mid-section. The T-spot is a great family owned personal training gym. They have two gyms in HB and one that will open soon in Costa Mesa. The Main Street location is a bit small but makes excellent use of the space. They have all the equipment you need for an all inclusive work out. The gym never feels crowded since they keep a rotating schedule of clients and never seem to overbook appointments. During training sessions the gym is basically split down the middle with trainers on their respective sides working with their clients, this way you never have to wait for a machine/spot. Typically each trainer will be working with 3-4 clients each hour. As for the staff, everyone I have interacted with was very friendly, helpful, and not the least bit pretentious. Barrett, my trainer while I was a member here, always delivered on providing an intense full body work out. Every training session was different and he would always keep things fresh and change/mix up the routine every session. He is a great teacher, knowledgable, attentive, professional yet personable, and keeps constant communication through out the week. The T-spot and personal trainer Barrett is highly recommended to any individual looking to push themselves that extra bit to get the results they want. My name is Rob and I've been going to The Training Spot since January, 2021! As a Firefighter Paramedic I have to be physically fit to perform well on the job. I have done every fitness program you can think of, but I felt like my results were plateauing. I was also struggling to stay motivated without the accountability of a couch/trainer etc. So I sat down with Matt (trainer) and Sarah (in-house nutritionist) in early January and they tailored a program to achieve my goals. It was an investment, but it was worth every penny. At the end of each week of training they would do a full body measurement tracking my body fat, muscle mass etc. and adjust my macros/supplementation as needed along the way. What made a HUGE difference for me was having a list of EXACTLY what I can eat (no need for food scales), and the optimal times for when to eat to maximize my results. As far as the workouts, I haven't trained this hard since I was a college athlete and would definitely not push myself this hard on my own (which is a good thing). Within 3 months I went from 17% body fat to 9.3% body fat, and my overall muscle mass and strength increased drastically. I actually reached my goal 2 months faster than I expected. The owners and staff take an interest in and care about their clients. All the trainers I have worked with have been good. Aaron has been my trainer for several months and he is great to work with. I believe 95% of one's experience really has to do with the trainer and less about the gym or program. Of course, the gym/company will influence the trainer's methods, but ultimately it really is about the experience with the trainer himself/herself. While I have had sessions with other trainers at this location, my 5-star rating is for my designated trainer Barrett at the Main St. location. Here are some reasons why I give Barrett 5 stars: - Barrett is very consistently and keenly attentive with every client. Group training is not individual training, nor is it like group fitness. It requires the trainer to have strong tactical multitasking abilities. Rather than focus individually on one person, you have to focus individually on three or four people, but not as a group, either, like group fitness a la obstacle course, but individually. And it goes beyond just prescribing and demonstrating a few different exercises per set, which some group trainers seem to do. I realize that someone who may be a good individual trainer may not be so great at group training because of this need. Good group training requires someone to have acute awareness of his surroundings, keeping tabs of three or four different individuals and their stage in their workout. You will know how attentive a trainer is in such a setting if he keeps better tabs on your weights setting and what set you are on than you yourself. Barrett is this kind of trainer. Perhaps it is his military background, but this trainer has tactical multitasking down pat. Five stars on attentiveness. - Barrett is very professional. I realize this is not to be taken for granted in this space. Barrett is easy-going as a person but is dead serious about your training/his job. That is a very difficult balance to get in a trainer. This also means that even though a trainer may have favorites or people they are more likely to speak to, he spends equal and even attention to all of his clients in a single session. I have noticed it is very easy for a trainer to become heavily weighted in his/her focus to one or two individuals, probably without even realizing it, whether it be due to personal affinity, or simply that client's specific needs. Barrett ensures that each client gets the right amount of attention and observation - again constantly in tune with where every single client is at in their workout. He is also extremely committed to his clients - one time there was a pre-scheduled session that didn't work for him time-wise, and he went out of his way to make sure I could still get trained that day. Five stars on professionalism. - Barrett is extremely positive and encouraging. Positive encouragement, or even a simple affirmation that you are doing a workout right, or have good form, goes a long way, and also helps affirm you are on the right path. When you are in a group training session, no feedback doesn't always mean you're doing it right, so positive reinforcement is always helpful. Barrett is never sparing on positive feedback, and very motivating. On top of that, he is very encouraging and overall has a positive, upbeat personality. Every work is different, and some of the workouts are very creative. Several months into training, I can already feel myself much stronger, and more fit. I have more energy, and I look forward to going to training. I have a very high-stress job, and my sessions with Barrett allow me to just zone out and go. As someone who was originally virtually allergic to fitness, I find myself looking forward to my workouts with Barrett as I gradually feel how my sessions truly contribute to my well-being. Overall, I can't find a better investment of my money than these sessions. About the Gym/Program From previous experience, I think each session comes out to be about half the cost of an individual training session at most other gyms. When signing up at this gym, I was initially put on the wrong program schedule. At the time, I was clear about how I travel out of the country and domestically up to one week out of each month, and how that would impact my training schedule. I also mentioned that I don't like back-to-back days/sessions. But they still wanted me on a 12 session plan and said I could roll sessions over to the next month and they'd make note on my account for that. Too many got rolled over as predicted, so we switched to 9 sessions/month. If you travel a lot every month, start with 9. The gym itself isn't huge, but it has everything, including towels. Wow, where do I begin? Huge waste of time and the owner is rude and thinks he's doing you a huge favor by taking your money. I emailed them about training and never got a response for over a week. The owner wrote me this: "Wasn't sure if you've been contacted yet about your consultation request. Lose weight, better performance, eat better...I think we're a perfect fit. Call Miranda, she knows my schedule and can give you a good time to meet so we can go over your goals and our programs" Bad first impression. First off, this place lies about private training. The training is hardly private, it is group training, with the trainer focused on his friends. This is why I quit after two sessions. The location is near main street downtown, but is a moot point when the service and training is some of the worst I experienced. The owner is a really good sales guy, ill give him that. I plopped down $713 on the spot, which was the biggest waste of money I ever spent. At my first training session, the receptionist could not find me (great organization) and when I was repeatedly spelling my Scandinavian last name, a trainer rudely interrupted me to ask another trainer about a grocery list of junk food (including energy drinks) to get across the street at 7-11. Very bad first impression. On to my first session. He spent about 30 minutes reading papers to me, 15 minutes making me the 3rd leg in the place and ignoring me, and only 15 minutes actually working with me on my current fitness standards. Of that 15 minutes there was a guy dropping weights. In many gyms, dropping weights is considered a inconsiderate douche bag move that will get you kicked out. Here, they embrace it. I found it extremely distracting. However, if you are a douche bag, drive you're lifted bro truck on over to the Training Spot! You will like it here. Second session (and chance) continued the 3rd leg theme over here. The trainer only had two people to train, myself and a older guy. 80% of the time the trainer was focused on the older guy and his horses. 10% focused on a random guy barging in off the street, wanting to hang a sports flag and only 10% on myself. That 10% focused on me was the trainer going to me (usually waiting on him to finish up on the flag or old guy) and randomly saying "do 10 pushups", "do 15 squats", etc. It seemed very haphazard with no plan. I could download a app or record a voice memo to myself that accomplishes the same thing. The gym is not air conditioned. They had a few fans all pointed at their friends. Made working out extremely hard with record heat and humidity. Knowing that I was mislead, oversold and wasting time, I stopped going well within my trial period. I also had to go out of town for a 2 month project and wanted to focus on my work, which allows me to waste $713 on "training". When I got back, I sent a email requesting a refund and the owner replied with this gem: "I will say this, you do take your time responding, I emailed you 7 weeks ago about meeting with me. I don't come in on Saturdays and this week I am out of town from Wed through Sunday." Remember my initial thoughts that the owner thinks he is doing you a great favor by taking you're money and keeping him in business? Well, this solidifies it. One day the owner called me during work hours, asking me for the amount to refund him (remember that poor record keeping?). I wanted to quote him about $1500, because that was the amount I paid him plus my time which my employer bills out at $230 per hour (I'm a electrical engineer). I told him I can't talk (as I was waiting for a important support call). He replied with something like "you can't talk for a couple minutes?". No dude, the customer you mislead can't talk and is not on your schedule. Jeez, common theme here of the customer being on his schedule. When I found time and got my important call I then dug through my AMEX bills to quote him how much much he needs to refund me for his interest free loan. He did finally refund me. Without me wasting more time on him driving to his office, on his schedule (of course) and providing him free market research without needing my credit card that he wrote down on a piece of paper because his credit card machine did not work at the time. If I get any unauthorized charges because how the owner mishandled my credit card number, I will go to court and file a fraud case with AMEX. I may have to change my credit card number instead of watching my credit card statement like a hawk which will be a huge waste of unpaid time spent and a major uncompensated inconvenience. Only thing I accomplished here was waste time (which is money) and have my goals set back. If anything, they owe me compensation for what they put me through. Also note that the all pictures of the owner I saw online are at least 10-15 years old. This is important as I do believe that people choose trainers based on how fit/ healthy they look. My wife and I have worked out most of our lives, but we weren't that motivated anymore and needed to lose a few lbs. We met Paul & Carolyn to go on their AMS Nutrition system almost 10 months ago......we can't believe the results we saw and how it changed our lives. We feel great, are leaner, have a LOT more energy and can't imagine not following their AMS system. It's simple, it's real, it works and it's NOT a diet. Aaron has made each day of training something I crave! He makes training fun and is always encouraging and pushing me to do the best I can. He is positive and really tailors each workout to my needs. He provides support with nutrition and offers options for my cardio.
