This place has a piece of 'art' that make a mockery of the Catholic Faith. On one of the bookshelves, there is a to-go container for coffee. Drawn on the left side, is an angel in the heavens, with lettering that states "give us this day our daily coffee". While attempting maybe to be funny, this is a mockery of the Eucharist, the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. On the front, you will find a drawing of the Blessed Mother Mary, holding the Infant Jesus. However, he is depicted as a bean of coffee, and her face is replaced by the pour spout. Giving this place an additional star from my previous review. Why? I absolutely love matcha lattes! It's difficult to find a place that will either sell or make them well. Heck, I have a hard time trying to make it at home. The Tea Market is my favorite, but I hardly make my way out there. But aha! Headrush even has 5 flavors for them - vanilla, blueberry, raspberry, lavender and headrush. I've tried an iced vanilla one, as well as blueberry. Both so good. Got an iced soy milk latte and my friend got some kind of matcha lavender drink the barista recommended. Both were drinkable. I get the same coffee everywhere I go and honestly this one wasn't anything to rave over- had an unpleasant aftertaste but overall wasn't anything terrible. Reeeealy good green tea latte and spicy Myan chocolate with espresso. The barista was a bit 'I don't know what's good I only drink black coffee'. But, once we got past her, the rest of the staff and environment was great, still not as good as the coffee, but not much in this world is that good. I'm back! I was here yesterday, and now I'm back. . So today I told myself, I'm going to do homework and fully review this place. So here it goes. Staff, super friendly and funny. They really enjoy what they do. They have a wide knowledge of their teas. Surprising really. The place is small, but there's lots of seating. There's also seating outside. It's just as loud as any other coffee shop you go to. No big deal. Today I got the Sunset Rush. Eh, personally I didn't fancy it. A bit too sweet and chocolately. It kind of tasted like orange liqueur. I also got the Sencha Superior Japanese Green Tea. (yeah, I've been here for almost 2 hrs). It's loose leaf. I like it without the bag (which is the way traditional loose leaves should be brew and drunk). The roast their own coffee beans, and bake their own goodies. They use whole wheat flour for their baked goods. Over All 1) Staff: Friendly and fun, get to know them! 2) Seating: It's okay for a small place, as long as you get there early enough to get a table. They have a small 4 chair bar 3) Wifi: Yes they do! 4) Quanity: I've only had three of their drinks, but I like 2/3 So that's a good thing... Headrush...more like "Had Better Rush In" to this coffee house!!! Wow, sorry about that. :/ This might be my favorite coffee house in Kansas City. It is the definition of "local", with contemporary and charming decor, and local photography pieces on display. It doesn't try very hard, and that's what is nice about it. It has good vibes, but not in a terribly hipster way. Basically, if you are a hipster, you and I would probably rate places totally opposite. So for example, I find this to be a 5-star establishment. If you are hipster, consider it a 1-star establishment. See how that works? I don't dislike hipsters by any means. But I think hipsters dislike me. It's probably because I wear a necktie, but not ironically. And because I talk about hipsters like I know that much about them when I clearly don't. I also give them props for serving bubble tea. They make theirs from scratch, as opposed to using a powder mix (thanks to my girlfriend for free admission into Bubble Tea 101; see how smart I sound with my powder talk and what not?). I happen to like their particular boba, also, as it's "tougher" (or less chewy) than most places'. That being said, it's overall not Josh's Choice Bubble Tea in Kansas City; that prestigious award goes to Dragonfly Tea Zone. I like it here more than any particular coffee house in the area, including Second Best, Thou Mayest, Starbucks, Post Coffee (my second favorite), Kaldi Coffee, and Quay Coffee. The staff was also very friendly on our visit. Also, I noticed a guy from Seattle gave it a 5-star rating. So you know it's good. Because they HATE Starbucks there, I'm told. First of all, the location is retro scruffy on the outside (in a good way). Young man employed at the shop held open the door and welcomed us in increasing our giddy excitement. My sister got her locally roasted blend of beans to go and a lavender tea that is a specialty. I got the spicy unique signature drink. It was a lingering heat that did not build. (How DO they do that??!!) I enjoyed the whole tall cup without spice overload. I would visit these enthusiastic coffee experts any day of the week. Sat in house. Simple decor. Living in the Northland, there aren't many locally-owned coffee roasters to choose from, but thankfully we have a good one in Headrush. From the outside, the place looks pretty nondescript - located in what was once an old fast-food joint that could easily be overlooked while driving along North Oak. But for those who venture in, what you'll find is a warm and inviting atmosphere, decorated with the artwork/photography of several local artists; a large selection of coffees, teas, and espresso drinks; an assortment of pastries and other snacks; and cozy seating areas for either whatever the occasion holds. For me personally, what I appreciate most about Headrush is their selection of air-roasted coffees. If you're wanting a freshly-brewed Cup-o-Joe, they typically have several options available to choose from, and regardless of the origin/style, they're always very well-made. But where they really set themselves apart from other area roasters is with their coffee-to-go. Headrush has a wide variety of "green" coffee beans that are just waiting to be purchased and roasted. Once purchased, they will put them in the air roaster right in front of you, and you can watch as your coffee beans are being prepared to take home. It's pretty fun, and you always know that your coffee is as fresh as it possibly can be! The biggest downside to Headrush, in my opinion, is that some of their baristas don't seem to be the most knowledgable about their products. As a coffee roaster, employees should be able to converse with customers, at the very least, about the origin of their beans and the flavor profiles of the different coffees, but unfortunately at Headrush that's not always the case. Regardless, Headrush remains one of the best coffee roasters north of the River, so I'm happy to continue going there whenever I'm in the area. read more

Came by one afternoon looking for a place to get some coffee and get some work done. I was hoping to get something to eat, too, but there really wasn't much besides some baked goods, and even then their freshly made items were nearly gone. I ordered a Berry Nut Latte, which was good, but nothing special. The barista wasn't rude but wasn't very welcoming, either. After I got my drink, I walked over to the seating area, which is very tight. I felt like I was going to knock over a table or picture with one swing of my laptop bag. My table was a bit sticky, and, again the place was very cramped, so I had a hard time getting as much work done as I wanted. However, the music being played in the shop was a fantastic mix of bands like Modest Mouse, the Strokes, and all those other bands I listened to in college, so maybe I was too busy rocking out to focus on work. I wasn't wowed by my experience at Headrush, but I'd be willing to give it another chance. I like the idea of supporting a locally owned coffee shop that branches out and is trying things like bubble and matcha teas. read more

I've had a $25 gift card to Starbucks since Christmas (writing this on the last day of February) and haven't used it once because if I'm feeling the need for a cup of coffee or similar I'm going here. The coffee is good and the staff is friendly but let's get to what you really need to know about: ICED BLUEBERRY MATCHA LATTES! Matcha is certainly becoming a trendy food item it seems even if Kansas City hasn't fully caught on but Headrush has embraced the wonderful green powder. I live pretty close and had driven by Headrush many times before visiting, usually thinking about how I missed having a drive-thru LC's Hamburgers which used to occupy the same building. It was a news report where the owner went over their speciality, the blueberry matcha latte mentioned previously, that caught my attention and got me to finally become a customer. I'm glad I did. Several loyalty cards filled and exchanged for free drinks later (every 10 stamps gets you a free drink) I'm happy to call Headrush my go-to place to grab some caffeine and maybe a cookie. Oh, and if you are a coffee snob they roast their own coffee in house. read more

Not so much when you are looking for great flavored coffee. This is a local spot which is great but the coffee was just average. They seem to specialize in mixed coffee drinks vs straight up coffee. We had Americano's that were so dang hot it took at least 15 minutes to enjoy. They had a weird floral flavor that we just couldn't get into. The "roasting" on site seems a little strange since coffee is best enjoyed 3-4 days after roasting. The seating area is a little tough to enjoy but seems like the outside seating might be okay when it's warm. The reviews let us down but we are serious coffee drinkers. This would be a nice spot for a quick stop for coffee since it will still be hot by the time you get to work. read more

If forced by gunpoint to use a Hall & Oats song title to describe my feelings towards Headrush, the clear winner would be "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)." And really, what would you expect me to pick? "Private Eyes"? That wouldn't even make sense! In the neighborhood, I finally decide to try this Northland shop that had such great reviews. Upon walking in, the teeny tiny shop smelled like completely burnt coffee, which I initially let slide, because everybody screws up and that smell is damn difficult to remove. But when I ordered my plain black coffee (trying to quit the sugary/milky drinks) I discovered that they in fact served me their scorched, destroyed batch. Anybody with a nose knows that coffee was destroyed, and yet none the three employees on hand made sure that it didn't end up in a customer's cup. Bad form. On the atmosphere front, I didn't find the shop particularly comfortable. It seemed cluttered and the music was super bad, like riding in a contemporary-Christian elevator. I wouldn't schedule meetings here, that's for sure. I'm sure they're nice people, and since Gladstone is a coffee desert and they're at least brewing, I feel kind of bad trashing them. In fact, I want to give them 1-star, but just can't bring myself to pull the trigger because they're so dang plucky. But yeah, I pass. read more

Well, let me start by saying Headrush is a great thing for Gladstone. I grew up in Gladstone and have been really disappointed by the direction it's gone. A locally owned coffeehouse that offers a meeting place for friends and live music is a great, great thing. Taken out of the context of what Gladstone has become though, Headrush just isn't as great. The owners were friendly and helpful. They asked if I lived nearby - it seemed like they knew I wasn't a regular. On this particular Saturday, the place was packed, I couldn't have found a seat if I wanted one, and everyone seemed comfortable with an acoustic folk singer in the "lounge". As has been noted, the air roaster may be the weak point of the shop, one that they really need to fix soon. The air roasting may be efficient at roasting small quantities of beans quickly but there was a burnt coffee smell in the air. My coffee was good but I'd have to go out of my way to go to Headrush again - probably not something that would be worth the coffee I got the first time. But since it is locally owned and in my home town, I will try them again, and I will update this review if it needs to be. read more
