If forced by gunpoint to use a Hall & Oats song title to describe my feelings towards Headrush, the clear winner would be "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)." And really, what would you expect me to pick? "Private Eyes"? That wouldn't even make sense! In the neighborhood, I finally decide to try this Northland shop that had such great reviews. Upon walking in, the teeny tiny shop smelled like completely burnt coffee, which I initially let slide, because everybody screws up and that smell is damn difficult to remove. But when I ordered my plain black coffee (trying to quit the sugary/milky drinks) I discovered that they in fact served me their scorched, destroyed batch. Anybody with a nose knows that coffee was destroyed, and yet none the three employees on hand made sure that it didn't end up in a customer's cup. Bad form. On the atmosphere front, I didn't find the shop particularly comfortable. It seemed cluttered and the music was super bad, like riding in a contemporary-Christian elevator. I wouldn't schedule meetings here, that's for sure. I'm sure they're nice people, and since Gladstone is a coffee desert and they're at least brewing, I feel kind of bad trashing them. In fact, I want to give them 1-star, but just can't bring myself to pull the trigger because they're so dang plucky. But yeah, I pass. read more

Well, let me start by saying Headrush is a great thing for Gladstone. I grew up in Gladstone and have been really disappointed by the direction it's gone. A locally owned coffeehouse that offers a meeting place for friends and live music is a great, great thing. Taken out of the context of what Gladstone has become though, Headrush just isn't as great. The owners were friendly and helpful. They asked if I lived nearby - it seemed like they knew I wasn't a regular. On this particular Saturday, the place was packed, I couldn't have found a seat if I wanted one, and everyone seemed comfortable with an acoustic folk singer in the "lounge". As has been noted, the air roaster may be the weak point of the shop, one that they really need to fix soon. The air roasting may be efficient at roasting small quantities of beans quickly but there was a burnt coffee smell in the air. My coffee was good but I'd have to go out of my way to go to Headrush again - probably not something that would be worth the coffee I got the first time. But since it is locally owned and in my home town, I will try them again, and I will update this review if it needs to be. read more

Very comfortable setting. Everything a local business should embody. Service was exceptional and polite. Tried the 'Head Rush' latte and instant oatmeal in a paper cup, just needed hot water. Total was $7.25, seems fair. They brought my oatmeal and drink to the table I was sitting at. Playing better then normal coffee shop music- live Beatles and Janis Joplin doesn't suck!! I finally had a chance to make it to the Northlands to try Headrush, The outside of the building looks like a burger joint, but they're definitely roasting their own coffee inside. I ordered my typical macchiato but have to admit that I got way caught up in coffee talk and gossip with the owner to tell you too much about the taste. The owner is just so friendly and talkative. I have a great coffee house (Parkville Coffeehouse) that offers my almond milk mocha just 3 miles away in the artsy ambiance that I crave. Even so, some days I just have to make the 10 minute drive to Headrush instead. Although the ambiance is nice, it is a bit hipster for me to feel comfortable enough to just sit and enjoy...so I usually get my beverage to go. I love that they focus on fair trade. Most of their baristas are super friendly, so if you happen to get one of the 2 that are not...don't hold it against them. The best part? They have bubble tea!!! I do not like the fruity versions, but they offer a coffee and a chocolate, so I always request one that is coffee and chocolate. Made with almond milk. They are (except for the aforementioned 2) always happy to accommodate my tastes! It is typically my beverage of choice when I am desiring a cold drink over a hot drink. I love this place. No, really. I love it. They have a wonderful selection of loose-leaf teas, great coffee, and at a better price than a lot of coffee shops. The atmosphere is laid-back, and the employees are always super-friendly. You get to watch them fresh-brew your espresso that goes into your drink, too. My favorite drink here is the spicy mocha (which isn't really spicy at all) but tastes wonderful! I actually dreamed about that drink one night. I went once when they offered live music, and it was just a guy outside playing his guitar. It was nice to be able to sit outside and listen, if I felt like it, or sit in the AC and just relax. I know it's a trek north of the river to try out this place, but trust me, you won't be disappointed. I headed to Headrush one afternoon to work and get a cup of coffee. It was mostly empty, which was nice, but the music was super loud, which was kind of distracting. I ordered a Chai Latte, and honestly it wasn't great. It wasn't hot and didn't have much flavor. It almost tasted watered down. After a while, I was the only person in the shop and was sitting in the back, and some of the employees were having a really loud conversation where they were yelling and cursing, which was a big turn off for me. I think they forgot I was still in the shop. Before I left the place was filling up quickly. It's a pretty small place, so if you plan to stay, choose a time when they won't be too busy so you can find a seat. I'm not sure if I'll go back. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't super great. read more

After passing this place many times, and not giving it a second thought, I read some reviews for the place. I can't believe it's taken me this long to come here. They've definitely changed the bubble tea game for me in KC. Headrush claims to be the only place in all of KC that serves bubble tea without the powder, and it looks to be true because I've never encountered another place in KC that does that. They also have a variety of flavors for making the bubble tea from scratch - using either soy, almond, or dairy milk - which I like because I'm lactose-intolerant. The tapioca pearls (boba) were on the tougher, chewier side, like they hadn't been cooked long enough. It did make me wonder if they did it on purpose, so that they wouldn't get too mushy if they end up sitting long. Besides that, I enjoyed the bubble tea as a whole. One thing I noticed right away about the boba was that they were sweetened. I assume that they let the tapioca pearls soak in a simple syrup, as boba doesn't come sweetened. Most other bubble tea places don't do that to their boba either. I enjoyed the taste difference because the sweetness cut through the more mellow flavors of the Blueberry Matcha that I got. The young lady working the register was really friendly and pleasant. She made sure to ask what kind of milk we wanted first, which I hadn't even thought of because I hadn't expected them to use milk. Not all places use milk in their bubble teas, as it depends on what kind of bubble tea it is. We also got a cranberry scone and a peanut butter cookie, which they bake in-house. I didn't find either to be mind-blowing, but they were still better than average. The space was a bit small with limited seating, but it worked for a small coffee shop. It seems like it might get crowded quickly though, if a bunch of people decided to come in all at once. They do offer a walk-up window, which is nice, if you don't want to go inside or want to enjoy the nice weather. They offer some loose leaf teas for sale, along with other merchandise. They also have green coffee beans that they can roast up for you. It definitely feels very local. I can't wait to come back and try their other drinks. Their tea lattes are calling my name. I love Headrush Riasters newest location in Briarcliff. I meet there with business colleagues often. It is roomy and also has a nice outdoor seating area complete with a warm firepit when needed. I love drinking from their nice white ceramic mugs when I am staying awhile. The bathrooms are large and clean. There are plenty of plug ins for electronic devices. I really want to like this place and their coffee. It doesn't matter which location North Oak or Briarcliff, their coffee just isn't strong enough for me. The rest of my family loves what they offer but I can add a shot or two of espresso and still get a less than satisfying cup of coffee. If you don't like a darker roast you'll love this place. Bottom Line Up Front: Matcha Blueberry is awesome. Their boba is sub-par, maybe better earlier in the day. Noticed the sign outside showing they served bubble tea so we were intrigued. The cafe itself was pretty small compared to starbucks. There was a small work area for studying and such. There was also random decor on the walls and some teas and coffee beans for smelling/buying. I ordered the blueberry matcha latte with boba. The drink was amazing, very refreshing with a good hint of blueberry with the matcha flavor to back it up. The boba on the other hand was very hard. Granted it was 7pm and I am sure the boba had been sitting in its little bowl for quite sometime. Boba is best consumed within 3 hours after cooking from my own experience. Headrush is a cute coffee shop in the Northland. It has a guy in a sombrero with a donkey out front which cracks me up. I went later in the day, so instead of ordering some coffee I decided to get some bubble tea. I had the kiwi and the person I was with got raspberry. Both were delicious. They also make their bubble tea from scratch, while most places in KC used powder. You could definitely taste the difference. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed it very much. The interior has a lot of art hung up on the walls that we enjoyed while waiting for our drinks. They have over 40 loose leaf teas and you can also buy coffee beans to take home with you. They roast them there. I will definitely be going back to try some of the tea and coffee. read more

Best damn coffee I've ever had. I am not exaggerating. I tried the Headrush and the Honeyrush. Highly recommend both of these. If you only come here once in your life, get the Headrush. Their bubble tea is also quite good. The boba has a good texture - soft exterior with a firm center. Matcha bubble tea was the best I tried, followed by guava. Neither was too sweet, which is good because the sweetness then comes from the boba. I didn't care for the coffee bubble tea, but that's because I don't like iced coffee. Only problem with this place is that my Starbucks and office coffee taste much blander by comparison now. It's absolutely better then the other coffee houses like Starbucks, and Scooters (the other places in the area) They are true baristas, and are experts at pulling the espresso shots! I have to say, this little coffee shop was full of surprises. Not really like winning the lottery surprised, but more of just found out you're dating your third cousin surprised. Why? Well..... Upon pulling up, really more looking for wifi on North Oak more than anything, I thought the placed looked very much like the burger stand that proceeded it. However, when we went in I was pleasantly surprised by how cozy it was (much like finding out the love of you life is still a legal relationship in most states!). The husband and I were promptly greeted and made to feel very welcomed. He got a black coffee and I a green tea. The staff seemed to be very knowledgeable in both coffee and had a delightfully large selection of loose leaf teas! But now we move into the initial gut wrenching surprise of finding out you are dating your cousin... It turns out the nice girl that helped me select a tea may have only been there to plan her wedding with an employee on his lunch break; good effort, but odd. During the planning session, there seemed to be a lot of yelling from the front by the one employee now still working. He may have been overwhelmed, but there were sock colors to be discussed! What made it worse, my husbands coffee was clearly burned! Not hmmm, this taste a touch off, but wow, your coffee reeks! I do not believe for a second that that smell only penetrated our nostrils, but nothing was done. This place seems fine, and I would certainly go again. Of course I say that knowing I get into that part of town once year. There seems to be a good foundation, just a few kinks to work out.
