My coworker ordered boiled shrimp from this place one say and has the break room smelling Ah-Maz-ing. I asked her where'd she get them from and she said "heads and tails" She said it was a seafood mart with a restaurant in the back. So today, I tried it. I am glad I did. When you walk in, it's the seafood mart where you can purchase raw seafood. In the back there is a dining area with a bar. You can seat your self. The place is very casual. I had the bowl of seafood gumbo. It was good but I had to add Tony's ( they get points for having Tony's on the table ) I also ordered the boiled shrimp. They were huge and flavored. Heads and Tails is definitely a Baton Rouge hidden gem. It's a bit off the main path, but so worth the turn around the corner!! They have a huge enclosed patio, which for this Mamma is a big plus! It's a great place to bring the kids and enjoy delicious cuisine. Their boiled crawfish is perfection. Easy to peel, spicy to the point of flavorful but not flammable. Their house made crawfish sauce is good on, well, everything. Order the hush puppies while you wait. They too are very flavorful, but not too much, so the kids can enjoy them too. My only :/ is that the boiled shrimp, while very large, were a bit hard to peel. The flavor was excellent though. Located behind the marketplace, this place is a hidden gem! When I went there last time, I was able to try the shrimp poboy, seafood gumbo, and Heads & Tails Seafood salad. The shrimp in the poboy was cooked perfectly as it was crispy, not over cooked like so many other places, and fresh tasting. The fries are nicely seasoned and crispy as well. According to their menu, the seafood gumbo is #1 rated by the Wall Street Journal and I would agree that it's very tasty; it has a bit of heat too! I tried the seafood salad and thought it was pretty good. I didn't realize that crab meat & shrimp goes well with salad but I am now a fan. I would recommend this place to others. read more

I have had the crawfish poboy many times and it is usually stuffed with crawfish and very tasty. Today the poboy I got was not stuffed and did not taste as good. Maybe person preparing it was having a bad day. I will not be in a hurry to come back here anytime soon. read more

Went here for the first time today after hearing good things about this restaurant. I was very disappointed. I ordered a seafood combo platter of fried catfish and fried crawfish. When the platter came out both proteins looked a little dark but I didn't say anything. I got 4 small pieces of fish and a good bit of crawfish. The batter on both was strange. I'm used to catfish being fried in a cornmeal batter. As a cut into the fish the batter came right off. This should not happen.The crawfish tail batter was not crunchy at all and the tails were rubbery. The hush puppies which don't come with the meal, had to order them from the appetizers, were just okay. This meal with a coke was 28 dollars, I won't be back. read more

Ordered crawfish from here after having it at an event they catered and it was just as good as i remembered! Super flavorful and really spicy - like runny nose, fat lips, sweating your face off spicy. I love it! Also love that they boil their corn and potatoes in the same seasoning as the crawfish because you'd be surprised but some places don't and it should be a crime! Great little hidden gem. There was live music the night we went which gave a really nice ambiance to the place. Wasn't loud either so you could carry on a conversation while still enjoying the music. For dinner I had the heads and tails salad and cup of seafood gumbo. Husband had the chicken gumbo. Both were very savory and tasted homemade. We split some boiled crawfish. They weren't piping hot and were a bit on the small side but the flavor was good. We split the bread pudding and although it was really good, it was oddly scolding hot with chilled pieces intermixed - maybe they microwaved it. So the odd temperature thing on both the crawfish and bread pudding is why I docked a star. Will definitely go again to try one of the poboys or entrees. read more

This is a casual local seafood restaurant close to our hotel, which we discovered thanks to Yelp reviews. It's basically several big rooms with an outside patio, not very busy when we were there midweek. I was surprised to find a nice Italian Pinot Grigio on the menu, so we were off to a great start.. We had country fried steak (wife) and the shrimp creole special (me), after hush puppies as a starter. All very good. We went for local food, and got it. Very tasty. read more

Very disappointed. Friend had catfish platter which had a very strong, fishy taste and a mushy texture. In the mood for a good, sloppy roast beef poboy with Swiss cheese, I ordered that. It was wretched. Roast beef straight from Sysco. Bland and over salted. Not enough cheese to even taste. (It took 2 of us to even locate a smudge of melted cheese). Didn't even eat it. DISGUSTING We ordered to go at 630pm today, 05/11/13. The guy on the phone said 15-20 minutes. It was 50....5 0 minutes. We live less than a mile from this place. We got home and the following happened: 1-the food was ice cold 2-food not prepared as requested 3-tasted like someone dumped a box of salt on the food.....was not edible When food is not fit for a dog.....time to go elsewhere. I called this place and asked to speak with the manager, Jennifer. I stated everything I just did above. She was...hemming and hawing..."oh, let me let you talk to the owner since he was in the back when your food was cooking" REALLY? I told her in no uncertain terms that this was our first time AND DEFINITELY OUR LAST! This place is disgusting. We threw all of the food away and went to Sammy's for dinner. This place is a little off the main drag. It was a slow night for our waitress so she hung out with us and helped peel some crayfish. It was very entertaining and she taught us well. Another off the beaten path place that I've wanted to try forever and I'm glad I finally did. Their crawfish are some of the best I've had in BR. Spicy but still juicy even when they've been out of the pot for a bit. The corn is good, but the potatoes were overcooked and a little weird. The dipping sauce is DELICIOUS. Pricing is on track with most other places in town, but I like that they offer a 3,4, and 5 pound tray option because sometimes you just want to go ham on some crawfish and 3 pounds just won't cut it. read more

Where to start? Nice layout, friendly staff and good live music on a rainy Friday night. This was our 4th try (out of crawfish the other 3 times). Found out why Sammy's is so crowded. The crawfish here were not good, by comparison. The deeper we got into the tray, the colder the crawfish got. Don't know whether they stored them cold and tried to heat them, or what. Potatoes were stone cold and the potatoes and corn were not seasoned. Best boiled crawfish anywhere !! Been going for years and nobody can touch these.. I used to love Sammy's and also Jimbo's until recently when Sammy's became inconsistent and super salty and Jimbo's became under seasoned ( although the premium crawfish Jimbo's sell are of great quality).. Flavor of crawfish: salt level is right where you want it, not over or underdone.. They pop right out of the tail, super juicy and spicy as always. Consistent and excellent. The one thing that isn't optimal is that they're closed on Sundays :( read more

Debbie served us, and was so awesome. We didn't know how to get into the body of the crab , she helped us out . She made great recommendations for food, and treated us like family. Really had wanted some boiled crawfish. I even changed out of my work shirt and put on a tshirt all set to suck on some heads for lunch. The broth in this gumbo was basically soup with rice and some seafood. The Shrimp Po Boy was huge. The fries were well cooked and the seasoning was great. The shrimp in the po boy was too salty. While I recognize it is early in the season, I see perfectly fine crawfish less than a mile away the smart night. I took a date here for the crawfish boil. Being from the Midwest/west coast, this is the first crawfish boil I have ever experienced, and it is really amazing. This place has such a southern feel to it. There is live music. The crawfish was so tender. We got five pounds of crawfish for two people which comes with potatoes and corn. This is a gem of a restaurant hidden on Silverside Drive in Baton Rouge off of Perkins Road near Essen Lane. I say they're hidden because they have a small sign (seemed like 4' wide x 2 1/2 ' tall) that sits on the ground on the corner directing you. It's not lit up nor does it show an arrow pointing to it. If you are an out-of-towner or don't know this area, it will be hard to find. I had difficulty finding it but once I did, my guest and I entered. We were the only customers in there just an hour before they close. They have early closing hours so you will have to eat dinner early if you eat at this restaurant. The older lady behind the fish counter you see as you walk in, was very friendly. Our young hostess was as well. The restaurant is in the back of the building so you have to walk through the market part to get to the restaurant part. Not a big deal. I enjoyed previewing all the fresh fish they had in their cooler display case! The tables & floors were very clean. They served us right away since there was no other customers. Their menu informed us their seafood gumbo was rated #1 by the Wall Street Journal, over 4 other gumbos. At first I tried the Fried Okra. Ohhh man, it was delish!!!!! Some of the best if not the best fried okra I've ever eaten! perfectly crispy/crunchy batter that sticks to the okra (if you're a cook, you know this is hard to achieve!). No stringy woodiness to the okra. Just very tender and YUM! I couldn't quit eating it! And the waitress brought us Ranch dressing to dip it in..which made it even better! Even after my meal was served I couldn't stop eating this okra. It was that good. I ordered the H&T Combo: 1/2 Poboy w/a cup of Seafood Gumbo or Etouffee. I chose the Crawfish poboy with the Seafood Gumbo (I had to try it!). The fried crawfish tails in the poboy were seasoned and fried just right, large too, but the bread left a lot to be desired. It was thin poboy bread (like Ciabatta) but was dry. It had indentions like it'd been put on a panini press & it was difficult to bite into. Poboy came fully dressed with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Very tasty! The gumbo was very good. Not the best I've ever eaten, but very good. I can see how New Yorkers would think it was the best hehe! The gumbo was served in a foam to-go cup and the whole entree was served in a paper lined plastic basket. We had to eat with plasticware which we had to get ourselves at a serving station across the room. Napkins were paper from a cafateria dispenser on the table. All was clean though. Fried Okra was served in a paper lined plastic basket as well. My guest ordered the Fried Catfish Platter served with Fries, Garden salad (he chose Bleu Cheese dressing), and Garlic Bread. The bread, again, was a bit dry. The salad was good proportion and included fresh lettuce, diced tomato, and shredded cheddar cheese. The catfish was served atop all of the fries. The fries were INCREDIBLEY good! Very crispy and still potatoey in the middle, PERFECTLY fried!! I was disappointed they didn't have the Turtle Cheesecake or the Triple Chocolate Cake listed on the menu, but waitress did offer us the "Homemade Bread Pudding w/Rum Sauce". It had peaches and pears cooked through it with a hint of cinnamon and the rum sauce had major rum kick to it. It overpowered the pudding. I totally missed having raisens in it! This is the only part I would not order again. The tartar sauce, Bleu Cheese dressing, (and Ranch dressing for Okra) were all served in plastic to-go cups with lids. This was defintely a lunch-type place. Don't let the plasticware and plastic baskets deter you from eating here! The food definitely makes up for that! All of our food was hot and fresh and extremely delicious! Their menu includes Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Poboys, fried Seafood Platters, Burgers, Muffalottas, and some specialty entrees, with desserts! Average price on menu was $9-13. They have an excellent poboy selection on their menu. All the usuals and some exclusives! I can't wait to try their Muffalottas and Etouffee! Their menu definitely has a Southern charm and deep south feel. They had large screen tv's on the walls along with LSU & fishing paraphernalia. My review pics seemed dark but it was decently lit. Great place to watch an LSU game as long as it's early in the day! I am disappointed in their hours! Wish they stayed open later. Parking was in a shared lot, well lit and easy access. They have a huge lit sign in front of the restaurant so you can't miss it once you are on Silverside Dr. I will be returning to this restaurant for sure! Two thumbs up! Very good cajun restaurant with friendly service. It's kind of hard to find because it is tucked away off of Perkins Road. All you can see is their sign until you turn onto their road and pull in their driveway. It is actually in a house that was converted into a restaurant. The food was very good. They also serve crawfish, hence the name, and really good po-boys. Try to make it by for their lunch specials. They were really good when we went. read more
