So... this was hands down the most bizarre massage experience I have had. I've had approx. 20 massages thus far, ranging from $10 nail salon massages to $150 NYC spa massages. I stumbled upon this place as I walked down Beacon Street in Washington Sq. and I had been craving a deep tissue massage, so I just walked in. First of all, the place didn't have much charm, but I was OK with that. I pay for the quality of massage; not the frills. I waited a few minutes and then I was taken into a room. Everything seemed customary up until this point... I am lying down, ready for my deep tissue massage, and the woman who assisted me comes into the room. She begins working. As soon as I am getting into my massage, a phone rings-- so, she says "sorry" and stops the massage to go answer the phone. I thought "how weird!". She comes back in and starts the massage again. Then, things got weirder... Another woman comes in and starts working on me too. So, they are both massaging me, speaking in Mandarin Chinese, as I attempt to relax. It ruined the experience of what should have been a peaceful massage. I contemplated getting up and going, but the massage felt good, so I stayed and figured I wouldn't really tip much, if at all. The phone rings for a second time. The lady who started working on me first leaves for the second time. I am left with the other woman who joined her. She is still working. It felt awkward and unprofessional. I have never experienced anything like this before. 1. During a massage, the therapist is NOT supposed to leave... especially not to go pick up the phone! I have never had this happen before during any prior massage. (I would understand if it were an EMERGENCY, but I do not think this was...) 2. Generally, 1 individual works on you; not 2, unless you request 2 people, I suppose. 3. Talking during a massage is also unprofessional. I was so mad after leaving this place I could not let myself Yelp it for a couple days because I want to be a responsible and not angry Yelper. The same thing that happened to the person who got the phone call interruption double team thing happened to me. And I read this review before I went!!! OK- take all your clothes off and put your head in this hole - it puts one in a tough place for assertive decision making. I AM SO MAD! "Is it OK if we both work on you for 25 minutes" instead of the hour I paid for? A mediocre at BEST 20 minute massage. They told me I fell asleep to try to fake out a few minutes- I did not fall asleep and I did not like them, the massage room or their attitude. Then I gave the woman a tip- and she looked at it and said "Is this for both of us"? In perfect English!!!! Of course during the entire 20 minutes of 'Chinese massage(!)' I am trying to tell them I have lower back pain- nothing- just hushed Chinese and patronizing broken English. But when it comes tipping time- they want $40!!!??? $70 'massage', $40 tip is $110 better spent on penny whistles and moon pies. read more

This place doesn't look like much from the outside but I've been coming here for a few years now and the massages have always been excellent! It's also great value for money since you get a full hour of massage for the money you pay (not 50 mins like at some spas even though you pay for an hour). Not all the therapists speak good English, but I love the fact that I get a massage and not chit-chat :) It's pretty basic inside, but it's clean and functional, no frills or spa candles, but if you want an excellent massage (and I like a good solid deep tissue massage) I would really recommend giving this place a try. read more

Clean, friendly and average to good prices for a massage. The sweedish/deep tissue is the more expensive, but it is worth it. The ambiance leaves something to be desired, but I go here for a good, strong massage, not the decor. read more

The music could have been a bit better, but other than that my experience here was fantastic. I had recently done a 545-mile bike ride and my back was killing me. The masseuse was thorough, incredibly attentive, and completely worked out my back. It was one of the best massages I've had! read more

i live more or less across the street from here so it is my go-to place once i discovered it in march. it is clean, convenient, professional, very reasonably priced and consistently good. i have been here at least four times and honestly surprised by the review by marrissa p as it certainly does not sound like this place. i have seen two therapists (samantha and annie) and each time i have had the chinese massage which is $70 for an hour plus tip. the chinese massage is a combo of deep tissue and thai styles from my experience (regular-bi-monthly massages for several years). each time, the massage has been targeted with good pressure with the effects lasting for at least a couple of days, if not more. given that i am fairly athletic (runner/ gym goer five times per week if not more), i need a massage that works out the kinks and this place does that in a clean friendly environment. price wise, from what i have seen at area spas and athletic clubs, their prices seem on the lower end- the most expensive one, i believe, is the chinese at $70 for an hour with other styles swedish, deep tissue etc being around $50-60 per hour, i believe. i agree it could have more atmosphere but the therapy rooms are clean, set at a comfortable temperature and "appropriately" lit, decorated. one thing, i do know that the owner/manager was away for a few weeks in june so maybe that could account for marissa's experience. read more

This storefront would be hard to notice if you were driving by because it is down a flight of steps and has a "garden view"---not handicap accessible. I noticed it while walking past one day when I had really tight upper shoulders, back and neck from sitting for long hours staring at a computer screen. I walked in without an appointment and one of the two women, Cindy, was available. In addition to being a CMT she was trained in acupuncture and uses acupressure points during the massage. This place offers a menu of options for type of massage: Swedish, Chinese, deep tissue, hot stone, foot massage. these can be combined. Length can be 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes. unless you have just one focal area, 30 minutes is really too short. 60 is a good length and 90 allows for good work of many areas ( like body soreness after workouts, runners training, long weeks sitting at the office, etc.). The Chinese and deep tissue can be serious bodywork. If you find that many massages are too light---most circulation improvement / surface manipulation of the skin--- these will definitely feel deeper and different. Good for well-muscled people who need more pressure to get to deeper muscles. If this would be too much pressure for you, tell them and they will lighten up. after some so-so massages at Massage Envy and similar places, it was nice to have a substantial massage. the staff is all asian and understand English well enough. in conversation they said that about 60% of their business is women. they have a promotional package for women where the massages are cheaper when a certain number are bought. Like some of the reviews said, the place has a basic decor; the ambiance could be better, but I want a good massage instead of hot tea, a bathrobe and slippers that I can get at home. When I'm face down or my eyes are closed, the surroundings are not important. I've gone back for additional massages and have had good ones each time, usually 60 or 90 minutes. I rate this 4 stars for the massage and recommend it for women or men. read more

I have an extremely bad back. I went in today for a massage with Cindy. She was wonderful. She worked hard to ease my pain. Stretched me after the massage. Used a Chinese oil. I agree that the furnishings are plain and it can get noisy if other people come in (not very good insulation in the room). But my goal was for a good deep tissue massage and easing of my pain. That's what I got. Going back next week. read more

Writing this review because I woke up today with some pretty severe bruising on my back from their "Chinese Massage" that I got yesterday. I went in for a Swedish massage but the the massage therapist told me that was meant for "old people" it was a very light touch so she recommended the Chinese Massage which was supposed to be in between their Swedish and Deep tissue massage in terms of pressure. It was apparent pretty quickly that this was not meant to be a relaxing massage. I asked her several times to go easier but she kept saying I had knots to work out. When she left the room to take a phone call mid session, I almost got up and left right then but decided to continue. I wish I hadn't. My back and arms are sore and bruised badly. Also important to know is that if you are at all modest, don't go here. There was absolutely no effort to drape or cover ...and the room was freezing! Lastly, the head piece of the table was not fully cushioned so half your face is pressed up again metal that is covered with a paper towel. Seriously, this was an awful experience and worse than that, I worry that they could seriously injure someone with these "massages". read more
