If I'm recalling correctly... healthwise used to open before 9:00 a.m. in the morning and really service the community. It was definitely the community's pharmacy. This new group that purchased the drugstore doesn't feel warm and cozy like it used to. And from what I understand.. my doctor's office had called in a prescription on April 30th. Took me quite a while to go and get it but they didn't even show any information on it. So I of course called my doctor's office and she read it right out to me that they definitely received the prescription and they have that proof on file at the doctor's office. It's a shame because it was such a Hands-On Community Pharmacy Once Upon a Time. Sadly the one thing we can count on in life is change! Well it's after 9:00 a.m. and they're supposed to be open but the pharmacist isn't here yet. The fellow that just unlocked the doors said the pharmacist isn't in yet ... due to traffic. WE'LL.... LEAVE EARLIER! THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THIS HAPPENED WITHIN A MONTHS TIME. IT'S RIDICULOUS. IT'S UNPROFESSIONAL. 3 STRIKES .... YOU'RE OUT. BE RESPONSIBLE TO YOUR JOB. And once he arrived & finally addressed me.. he had a miserable attitude. So, seems like being tardy is his standard. He's keeping the customers waiting and yet he has a nasty attitude. Seemingly quite entitled. That's not what a community wants for what was once a real mom and pop warm and fuzzy Pharmacy ... AND THEY WERE SO PROFESSIONAL ... AT THE SAME TIME. . When I ran offices and someone was late... NO LESS SO VERY OFTEN ... the owner DEFINITELY did not appreciate it ... and over time they will let go. It shows a lack of care and concern for your job. This pharmacist just shows up LATE. I'm standing outside at 9:00 (when the pharmacy is supposed to be open) ... 3 times within a month is unacceptable ... 3 TIMES IN A MONTH'S TIME?!?! SAYS VOLUMES TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. We were used to a very different type of service at this Pharmacy. I've been in the neighborhood for over 50 years now. TIMELINESS! Actual professionalism And real customer service All very critical in a business ... especially when you're dealing with the public. These are key factors for REAL SUCCESS. DON'T RISK USING Health Wise Pharmacy on York, you'll be sorry!!! They used to be, emphasis on USED TO BE, good. They refuse to pay their delivery people a meager wage and as a result YOU will hear all sorts of excuses as to WHY they can't delivery. Saturday, RX was needed urgently. NOPE, no delivery on Saturday. They could walk it over themselves if they cared as I live 2 blocks away, but hey, no interest. If I could go and get it myself, I WOULD HAVE. Now Monday, after multiple calls and no guarantee, finally got RX at 53i0PM. They value saving a few dollars over your well being and that's evident. Never trust them again. Our son moved closer to his law school but kept his meds at Health Wise, in spite of the distance, because the pharmacies closer to his school were not patient oriented nor as knowledgeable. I make it a point to use local shops and services in my neighborhood. Although, a bit more pricey than my online pharmacy I started using Health Wise 4 years ago. The service was great. The operative word: WAS. As of late, rather than being treated as a valued customer my concerns are dismissed. A prescription which is required to be kept cold was delivered warm. I am grateful for Health Wise whenever I need a prescription filled/refilled. One time, when I was returning home from orthopedic rehab, I sent the car-service driver in with prescriptions and told him the pharmacist had all my numbers. It took him two seconds, and the meds were delivered a half hour later. The folks here have always been accommodating and helpful, and new management has made it even better. read more

I am not one who feels the need to write reviews of every business I frequent, but the last couple of times I came to Healthwise made me feel that this place really deserved it, in a good way! Recently I have had a number of health issues which required me to start taking a number of new medications. Each time I had my prescriptions filled at Healthwise I found the pharmacists really took the time to guide me along the best way to take them, and what any side effects they might have. The pharmacist even went through a check list with me on what to eat, what to avoid, and other ways to make me better. In fact, the last time I stopped in just to pick up some toiletries, etc, one of the staff members remembered me and checked in to see how I was doing. This personal touch was one of the few highlights I had being ill and it really was appreciated. We live in a world without customer service, where big money chains treat us all like cattle. I will continue going to Healthwise, not just for my physical well being, but also because it is so nice and refreshing to be treated with dignity and respect. Thanks Healthwise! read more

This pharmacy is the best!! Their customer service is BEYOND what you will ever find at any chain pharmacy. I have been coming here for years and will choose them over CVS or Duane Reade, both of which are closer to me, any day. They also ALWAYS have a full stock of so many OTC items, from cold meds to cough drops and from hair spray to lotions! And they have every ESSIE nail color you could ever need! read more

A former Upper East Sider, I came to know Health Wise very intimately. As a rule I generally steer clear of having to wait on line at big boy types like Duane Reade. I ventured around to a few different pharmacies within the allowed 3 block radius from my apartment and eventually settled on Health Wise for a few reasons: - The personal touch. - Their great selection and very reasonable prices on staples (they have Marvis toothpaste) - Delivery. Critical for a man on the go like myself. - I always loved their Christmas displays. I love independent pharmacies and try to stay away from chain establishments while I'm in New York, but quite frankly, I'm not impressed with Health Wise Pharmacy The good: Old-fashioned candies, some unique gifts, cute feel. The bad: The 20 minute wait for my prescription was fine,I've worked in retail pharmacy, I understand the process. But that 20 minute wait was tacked on by another 10 minute wait, which was tacked on by another 10 minute wait... The ugly: They asked me to sign for my NEW prescription without offering to counsel on how to take my medication. The last time I checked (1 week ago), it is not only a state but FEDERAL LAW to offer to counsel for all new prescriptions. I don't care if I didn't get a consultation, but what worries me are the other patients who don't get counseled and instructed on how to correctly take their medications. Pharmacists are the last line of defense before the medications get to the patients, make sure they know the warnings, precautions, and how to take them correctly. Come on people. read more

Whenever I am in Duane Reade buying paper towels or shampoo, I can't figure out why people fill prescriptions there. The line at the pharmacy is long and every other person seems to being having some sort of problem with their prescription. There is never a line at Health Wise, the people are friendly, the pharmacist is knowledgeable, and they deliver. I promise, once you go there, you'll NEVER fill a prescription at Duane Reade again. read more

I thought I liked them. There were some glitches, like they only deliver once a day and do not have a house charge account. But they seemed nice and accommodating. Until they delivered a pharmacy product that was actually gray goods. The label came loose and underneath where the pharmacy puts the prescription it said, "NOT TO BE USED OUTSIDE OF SOUTH KOREA". When I called they told me that it was a perfectly good product and that by changing it they would have to use another distributor. Like I care. I wonder what other shortcuts they take. read more

I've never written a review on Yelp before and only started using it when my daughter downloaded the app on my phone because she said it was good for finding new restaurants. When I noticed Health Wise Pharmacy had only one review and it was so unfavorable, I felt the need to put in my two cents. I've been going to Health Wise for my prescriptions for almost ten years now. Every one there knows me by name. They know that I like my purchases delivered and Jason, the manager (and a real character), remembers that I like the liquid Advil Caps. I mean, come on, he remembers what specific kind of Advil I like! Sure, some times the pharmacists might have a little bit of that special New York "attitude" but that's part of the charm. As far as I'm concerned Duane Reade and the rest of the chains don't hold a candle to a place like this. read more

For whoever said they were trying to charge more, or didn't counsel a new prescription in 5 years I have experienced the complete opposite. I have moved a couple times over the years from the area and will still go back here no matter how far I may be. They special order my medication at a very reasonable price and literally go out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and that it I experience the least hassle possible. They have a great stock of unique skin products, hair products, and the old fashion neighborhood vibe that a chain pharmacy can never come close to. This is by far the best pharmacy I have ever been to and the employees are amazing. I really can not even fathom how someone could ever say something bad about this place. I've been using Health Wise Pharmacy for years. The past few months, they've gone way downhill with their customer service. I don't know if they sold the business or what, but the new pharmacist is not helpful at all, rude, and difficult to work with. I began using Health Wise at my doctor's suggestion when I was having difficulty finding my medication in stock, but it's just not worth giving them my business anymore. What a shame. I've always preferred to use small business over national chain, but at least at a chain, there's accountability. At Health Wise, what made the place special is gone. read more

Don't know why reviews are so polarized -- it's hardly the worst place you could go in the neighborhood. It's a far better choice than a chain. BUT I have had some unhappy experiences here over the years. Begging for sooner-than-20-minute meds for post-surgical pain -- and being flatly refused, although I was a long-term customer, for example. That was a very long time ago. On the plus side, they are knowledgeable, or will find out if there's something they don't know. They've special-ordered things for me, like a sunscreen I wanted to try. And they get to know you, like most independents. Still, if you have a choice, give Neergaard on First Ave. a try. They get a solid 5 from me. read more

They are always pleasant, helpful, and are incredibly patient with me, even calling me if they are concerned that the cost of my prescriptions have gone up to recommend ways to lower my costs. I am living in NY and one of my favorite doctors is in CA where I'm from. He still writes me prescriptions when needed. Duane Reade could NOT figure out my insurance and or LOST my prescription multiple times so I tried this little place on the corner of E79th street called Health Wise. If you don't mind people knowing your medical business this is the place to go. My prescription was there in a couple hours. No issues with my insurance coverage, no lost medicine. I have become friends with Jason the manager, and like I said, as long as you don't mind your friends knowing your medical business, this is the place to go. He knows my mom and always asks how she's doing by name. And they also have a lot of natural remedies in there as well. I get all my body products, epsom salts, and other dead sea salts for hot baths there too. 5 stars. read more

this place saved my life this morning! whilst in bed dying with the stomach flu and in need of drugs (and there was NO way I was leaving my apartment--could barely get out of bed), I turned to yelp to locate a nearby pharmacy that would deliver some OTC products. the woman who helped me place my order on the phone was super friendly and even helped me pick out the proper meds for my ailment. she said delivery would be about an hour/hour and a half, and it was. prices were fabulous--for under $20, I got a 100 ct. bottle of ibuprofen, a giant box of famotidine, 2 liters of Poland Spring, and tax/tip for my delivery guy. At Duane Reade, I can't even imagine how much all that would have been. i'm def going to have to stop in here and check the actual store out--might even switch my prescriptions to here. read more

I have been going to Health Wise pharmacy for many years. LAST MONTH THEY GAVE ME THE WRONG PILLS IN MY PRESCRIPTION REFILL. I took it for almost a month. The pill looked slightly different but I thought the generic changed as they often do. I noticed the pill was not working well but again thought it was because of the change in generic brand. I finally looked it up on line. IT WAS THE WRONG PILL. Started with the same first three letters as the right pill. Clearly the pharmacist grabbed the wrong one off the shelf. When I brought them back the pharmacist apologized. Everyone else hid in the back. Neither the manager nor owner has ever called to apologize. The pill they gave me was a pain killer that is very irritating to the stomach. Today I was diagnosed with the beginnings of an ulcer and inflammatory polyps in my stomach. STOP GETTING YOUR PX'S AT HEALTH WISE. GO TO DUANE READE AT 80TH AND YORK. THEY ARE AWESOME. Knowledgable and helpful pharmacists. They have a huge stock so you get your pills in 15 minutes. And please google every pill you take before you take it. I was lucky as it could have been much worse. read more

This is a great neighborhood pharmacy! I had been going to Duane Reade for years, but came here one time when Duane Reade did not have my prescription in stock. Now I don't know why people would ever go to a big chain, or why I had't come here all this time. The staff is always so helpful and attentive, and they have great over the counter products. a great place, especially for oldsters on medicare. they have every kind of medicine here and will get anything they don't have in stock for you. prices are very competitive, especially with the rip off duane reade across the street. plus, with co-pays set by medicare and the companies, there is no reason to go to another pharmacy, except for flu shots. read more
