We met Bill Healy about 2 years ago when we were trying to find someway to insure our guests realize which was our front door vs our back door. Bill and his company designed a beautiful arboretum. However, what followed was magic. They changed our property into our beautiful Garden of Eden! They listened as to what kind of plants we wanted and they planted them! In addition, they installed an amazingly beautiful and unique cedar fence with LED lighting so we can enjoy our property at night without disturbing our neighbors! We recently had a mishap with our neighbor's tree fell over our newly constructed fence. Bill and his crew were out with his crew to help clear up and restore that part of our property to its former beauty! We had him do our backyard, and he did a HORRIBLE job. He did not put any drains in our yard, and as a result, all of our landscaping plants died of root rot. The irrigation was installed incorrectly, and the lighting shorted out within months. We ended up having to redo most of the work, costing us another $20,000. The company that we had redo a majority of Healy's work said that he's had to redo a coupl of his other jobs, as well. DO NOT USE HEALY!!!!!!! read more

We recently used Healy Landscape for our driveway and front yard hardscape. The entire design was done with Tim and he was very patient and helpful with us. Tim took the time to show us samples, took us to various suppliers, and also showed us the various options to choose from. Once we decided on the design and materials, Healy Landscape was off and running. The workers were very respectful, courteous, clean, hardworking, and punctual. I'm actually pretty disappointed with them since they seemed good. I guess they are too busy for new possible business. We contacted them to get a quote and the owner came over. We had a good talk and he was very knowledgable. He said I'd get a quote from his office the middle of the next week. Three weeks later I asked if they were still going to give me a quote. The woman (his daughter) said I would get it middle of next week (so they forgot I'm guessing). It's now about two weeks later and no quote or contact. It's hard to recommend them for work though when you can't even get started with a quote. read more

Our experience with Healy started out well but has consistently deteriorated over time. They get 2 stars because of the dedicated people that worked hard at our property in a professional way month after month. That said, the management is either incompetent or unethical. Maybe both. First, the good: The quality of their work is good to great and the people that have worked at our property have been great to deal with. The first team we had would bring in our garbage cans, was always attentive to details and kind to my children. HOWEVER... We are currently on month 14 of a project Bill told us would take "3-4 months." While there have been increases in scope they have been about 20% over the original project. Definitely nothing to justify going 250%+ over the expected timeline. Additionally, in early January we asked him for a completion date and he said "4-5 weeks" but we're now 5 weeks past that timeline and are still at least 2 weeks from completion. Again, I won't speculate whether he is unethical or incompetent...but he's clearly one of them. During the summer Bill fired the foreman of our job and we started dealing with him directly. Our project was bid on a fixed bid and shortly thereafter aspects of our job came into dispute. While it was clearly expressed in the contract (thankfully) he was unhappy with how they had bid the cost of the glass railings. He told us we would have to pay more because the bid was "obviously too low." We told him, "No way, the contract clearly states the number of feet of glass railing." It was an issue for weeks and he finally relented. But the relationship was on the wrong path. Then, we had a line in our (fixed bid) contract for a "pre-fab firepit." When the cost came in over the bid he said he would not honor the bid and claimed $4200 was for installation, despite the fact there was another line item for gas installation. We finally simply had to remove this from the our agreement with him, even though it affectively gave him what he wanted. Finally, one morning I was at my house when a sub-contractor came to the door. He said he had done work for Healy but they were not paying him. He explained that they were illegals (not passing judgement either way on this) and as a result they couldn't get paid. He asked me to talk to Bill and try and get them paid. Another complication no one wants to find themselves in the middle of. I could go on and on about the issues we have had, including an unwillingness to commit to a schedule or concrete timeline (we were supposed to be done last July and now it is March). But, in short, I simply do not trust them. In summary, if you are willing to work with an open-ended, ambiguous timeline, have a lawyer on retainer and don't mind disgruntled sub-contractors coming to your door, go with Healy. The quality of their work and their employees are great. But if you are going to deal with Bill, document everything and be prepared to fight. read more

We used Healy Landscape to remodel our backyard in Menlo Park this summer. It was a big project. A separate company had removed an old pool in the yard, and all we had left was an expanse of dust and dirt. Over the course of six weeks, the Healy team installed patios and other hard-scaping, retaining walls, irrigation, lighting, lawn, trees, plants, etc. The final product is gorgeous... we are very happy with it. The Healy team, led by owner Bill Healy, was very responsible and courteous. They had a good eye for detail, and accommodated our requests, even when were being very detail-oriented. They did nice work with the hardest parts of the project, like installation of blue-stone patios and benches. The Healy team went out of their way to be helpful. They helped me to install a play structure for our kids that we had brought over from our previous house. For no extra charge, they put in a new redwood gate to replace an old one "because it will look better." They had some extra stone leftover from a retaining wall, and used it to line a nice planter area along the side of our driveway, beyond the scope of our project. It was things like this that showed me that the owner and employees of this business are professionals who take pride in their work. One last thing - Healy's rates were better than the competition. read more

Start with the good: In Sep 2013, Healy Landscaping and Construction installed a paver driveway and I love it! Pavers fit tightly and look great. Not good: When looking for a landscaping company, I knew I wanted pavers to replace my concrete driveway but didn't know what color or design. Healy provided three addresses of driveways they had installed. I liked one and requested the same driveway design and color. That is almost what I got, minus the border. The border area was cleared of grass and leveled but no pavers laid. When I called the office, I was told it was not in the contract. First warning: Healy's contract is not specific. Although you have discussed details with Bill and his staff, the contract is generic. Since it was only my word a border was included in the price, I let it go. Second: My driveway has a slight slope downward and every winter rain water seeps under my garage door into the garage. The job included a channel drain to stop the flow. Winter 2013 was dry and the drain worked for the light rains. Winter 2014 is very wet. Even before the big storms hit, rain water was once again seeping into my garage. During the heavy storms, it was as though I didn't have a drain. Having dealt with Healy's response to complaints, I didn't approach him and asked two contractors to submit bids to fix the problem. Both of them said the same thing: design and execution is flawed. Channel drain is on a high spot and should be on a low spot, and isn't deep enough. This is an expense repair, so one of the contractors suggested giving Healy a chance to fix it. Bill was supposed to come out today and look at it. If he came, he didn't call, text, email, leave a card, or in anyway indicate he was here. read more

I am writing an update review because I see that a more recent review by Andrew L written on 3/22/2018 is very similar to our experience, with the exception that the workers who came to our house were not experienced and did NOT do a good job before I fired Healy in the end (and subsequently had to find another company to fix their bad quality work and finish the work and thus lose all that extra money already paid to Healy). The points that Andrew L. brings up---not honoring the original contract details, trying to make you pay more for things that are already clearly agreed upon in the contract, NOT PAYING HIS WORKERS---these are the exact same things that happened to us. After a couple weeks of work, the workers told us that they were not getting paid and they were very unhappy about this. The workers asked me if I had paid Healy already. I had already paid Healy for 100% of the backyard part of the job (even though it was not done yet), plus about 20% of the front yard part (they had started demolition of the front before the back was done) and the workers were really unhappy to hear this; they thought they were not getting paid because we had not paid our part to Healy. I thought about taking Healy to small claims court to get our lost ~$15k, but in the end, it was such a stressful experience that I simply walked away from it. It was that stressful. He REALLY bullies you until you break down. ***Don't make the same mistake, don't hire them, don't trust them.*** They are very nice and accommodating during the estimate stage. But once they get your money, you're screwed. And they are unethical. I don't seem to see the official complaint against Healy anymore on the CA Contractor License Check-Up webpage... perhaps complaints expire after some years. Just beware. It is absolutely unbelievable that Healy is still allowed to operate with a license, or operate at all for that matter. read more

We researched local contractors, and selected Healy Landscape for a good size project to re-do our backyard patio, our front driveway, walkway and porch. We soon discovered that the Healy team has exceptional quality and customer service in all they do. Other contractors are around when it is time to get paid, but disappear when you have a question. Not so with Healy. The client gets personal attention by phone, email, and in person. Bill Healy and his team are not beginners. They have extensive industry " know how" and can offer suggestions, ideas along the way. They are all very hard working, always on time, and clean up daily to help minimize the clutter at the work site. Rafe is an artist with stone ! Our gorgeous backyard now hosts barbecues and parties for lucky family and friends and the front yard has curb appeal that adds to the overall value of our home. . The crew was so helpful with suggestions and personally gave me a hand to get my disabled husband into our home from the hospital. They were respectful and professionally proficient. I had a great experience with Healy Landscape. I worked with Bill and Cal at first, and then Rich was here most of the time supervising the job. Bill is the owner, and he stays extremely involved in the projects his company is working on. He believe in doing quality work, and will always be checking to make sure that it's being done that way. I had interviewed two other companies about doing my project (complete landscaping of my property), and Healy blew the both away with their professionalism, credibility, and willingness to listen to what I (the customer) wanted to have done. From start to finish, they did everything the right way, they worked quickly and efficiently, and never overlooked a detail. One good example is that a small deck I had them build was finished and looking great. Bill and Cal came by and said "This won't look perfect unless we put up some lattice around the open areas." I said "I appreciate that, but we didn't discuss having that done when you quoted it, and I have to stick to budget.". Bill said: "Don't worry about it, I'd rather have this done right than get a few extra dollars from you." After the job was done, they did a complete evaluation, and actually did some additoinal work that they noticed (minor stuff, but I wouldn't have seen it). Two weeks after the job was done, I had a question about the irrigation system, and they sent their irrigation guy right out and fixed the problem within an hour of me calling. I would recommend Healy to a friend or family member. They are a highly professional outfit that does great work, and will make sure everything is done right! If you talk to them and want a reference, let them know and I will be happy to provide one. read more

This review is overdue but, after the renovation, life just got in the way (enjoying our patio). Our remodeling journey started last year, where we interviewed several contractors who made us feel like we were in a car dealership. Bill Healy from Healy Landscaping was one of the contractors who made a bid for our outdoor kitchen and patio project. From the first time we met him, we liked him immediately! He came to listen to our vision and what we could afford. The only advice we can give you is; TRUST Bill- he has impeccable taste and a fine eye for detail and he will do everything he can to make you happy. For example, we picked a paint color that ended up not working with our house color and he agreed to have his folks repaint the wood for our patio cover. We were also very focused on having a granite countertop for our outdoor kitchen but he told us to consider bluestone instead. That idea wasn't something we were initially open to but he patiently talked to us about the material several times (did I tell you- he is a pretty hardheaded) and brought a sample until we agreed. My husband loves to cook and was pretty particular about the kitchen appliances and when the place they were going to order it from did not have it in stock, Bill scoured the internet to get a brand that was acceptable to him. Finally the ultimate test- we had to leave for a big family vacation and they were in the middle of installing our countertop and still haven't decided on the kitchen siding. Bill asked us if we were going to trust him to pick it out for us- had to match the travertine floors and the bluestone. Needless to say we were very anxious but we didn't have a choice. We came back a week later and LOVED it!!!!! We were so happy with our patio, we invited Bill and his family over for a BBQ dinner!!! His staff was very hardworking, courteous, and cleaned up the work area before they left everyday. Bill was always just a phone call away and was there to meet us if we had any concerns or questions. Needless to say- we were very happy working with Bill and Emma (his daughter who manages the office and logistics). We very highly recommend Healy Landscaping!!!! read more

Not a review of actual work done...we didn't even get to that (so, put it in perspective). After being told they don't do a project for less than $20K, I took a morning off work to meet with the estimator. He didn't turn up (a scheduling mix-up according to them). They didn't return multiple calls/vm's I left requesting clarification. Several days later they called and asked for another opportunity to quote and to 'make this right'. We made an appointment. They called again and moved the appointment back further. The estimator showed for this 3rd scheduled appointment, apologized profusely, took his notes, and promised a quote. Two weeks later (and despite several emails asking for the quote and promises it would be provided 'ASAP'), I gave up and booked the job with an alternate contractor. Total period of interaction was 2 months and it was, unfortunately, a total waste of time and ended in zilch. Not great. read more

We used Bill Healy for a complete yard renovation including hardscape around a pool, a paver driveway, and landscaping. Bill's crew was amazinig. They worked long days, were always punctual, and maintained a clean jobsite. Bill coordinated work with other contractors (pool, electric gate, electicians, etc) and worked well with our landscape architect. The billing and invoice process, including change orders was always prompt and fully detailed. Bill was present at the site on a daily basis overseeing all of the work. The workmanship was top notch. All of my questions and concerns were dealt with promptly and the end result is amazing. We had just completed a year long re-model and worked with many contractors and tradesman. Bill Healy and his team are at the top of our list of favorites. They are knowledgable and extremely professional. I would use them again and recommend them without reservation. read more
