Life jackets and ear muffs were provided. Then we shoved off to the river where we saw fish jump and Eagles fly. Two Eagle nests!!! Capt Kirk stopped on a sand bar in the middle of the river so we could all hop out and frolic in the ankle deep warm water. when we returned, our grandkids said, "Let's do it again!" So it was a big hit on this Sunday afternoon. Strongly recommend it!!!

I've been visiting Fontenelle Forest since the early 80's, but it has been almost five years since…read morethe last visit. Buying entry tickets was fast and easy with friendly service. The boardwalk systems has expanded since our last visit so it is possible to do several miles just on boardwalk. The dirt trails are better marked than our last visit. With all the recent rain the forest was very green, with lots of flowering plants. We visited the raptor area for the first time and enjoyed seeing the various birds and reading about their history. We'll be buying a membership and hope to hike the trails this fall and winter.

The house was built in 1869 and stands near downtown Council Bluffs as a stunning (and refurbished) architectural marvel. This was the home of Grenville M. Dodge, a Union Army general, politician, and a major figure in the development of the railroads across the American West. He was also a trusted counsellor to Presidents (Grant and Lincoln) and even served a term in Congress. Whether you want to drive by, walk around, or lose a couple hours inside, this place is well worth the visit. Also, don't miss the August Beresheim House right next door.

What a way to set the stage for a wonderful tour. There were helpful movies to view, gifts to buy, and two lovely houses to see. Free parking across the street made access easy. The Dodge House was completed in 1869. The Victorian Age had traveled across to America; new inventions, ideas, exploration and expansion, and technology were on the rise. This growth and the industrial revolution can be witnessed throughout these museums. There are tour guides and pamphlets to take you back to the time period. The tour guides are well-educated in this period of history and explain details so thoroughly! The trees were in full autumn glory and Christmas decorations were going up! The tour guides are so knowledgeable. And the tour is amazing! The history, rooms, and antiques in this house are very interesting. So much to see; you'll want to come back again!

Elkhorn Crossing Recreation Area is a terrific spot for camping. That's why I came here. I was…read moretraveling across the country and this quiet park situated about 25 miles west of Omaha, Nebraska was the perfect place to rest for the night. I discovered Elkhorn Crossing through the app on my phone called Campendium. Upon arriving here, there's a little "introduction board" posted near the entrance. I pulled my car over and read the sign with instructions on how to get situated camping. There was a small pamphlet/card to fill out. Included with this was an envelope to deposit $10 cash or a check into the drop-box. Then I teared off the receipt portion and attached it next to the campsite of my choosing. That was it. I was good to go! I'd just like to point out that Elkhorn Crossing is closed for 5 straight months out of the year from November 1 - April 1 which obviously makes sense due to the winter conditions. For me stopping on by back in August 2020...I had nothing but warm weather, lol. What I really liked about this Elkhorn Crossing was the amount of space and area to spread out on. So although when I visited back over the summertime there were other campers nearby my tent...they actually appeared far away. I felt like I had a big section of grass all to myself. Also...this was important. You were allowed to pitch your tent on the grass area so it made for a fluffy setting to sleep upon. Most campsites these days (especially the more primitive ones in remote locations) feature hard dirt grounds to rest on. For those campgrounds I use my inflatable mattress for padding. Some real good aspects to Elkhorn Crossing that I appreciated was not only the campground area being so spacious...but every site had a barbecue pit to cook including picnic tables. For anyone bringing food and groceries with them...it's the ideal place to enjoy a cookout. Also good was being able to back my car nearby my tent so this way I didn't have to walk back and forth far setting myself up. If I had to reveal anything disappointing, it'd be that there weren't any showers or restrooms on the grounds. Sometimes I get real lucky at campsites I pick where places actually offer these amenities. But usually I have to pay more than $10. Those types of campgrounds (mostly within RV Parks) cost more in the range of $25 - $50 for the night. But I am easy. I have no issues using the vault toilets. Although I never explored around this Elkhorn Crossing Recreation Area, I did check online a lot of other outdoor activities for having fun here. This included... - Fishing - Float trips down the river - Playgrounds - RV Camping - Wildlife Viewing (though I didn't see anything) I really liked the picturesque scenery during sunset. I sat back in my lounge chair and appreciated the views out into the distance. Goes to show how much space there was available here that I was able to admire an evening summer sunset. Overall, I very much enjoyed my time and stay for the night here at Elkhorn Crossing Recreation Area. It was a great pit-stop along my driving journey around the USA. I'd certainly recommend to anyone needing an easy going stop for the evening...this place is more than serviceable.

There is no water or electricity hookups but we do not need them. There is no dump but there is a Loves 4 miles away where you can. It's quiet and right on the river. Sites are level.

Street parking, however, was free. I didn't check out the hotel restaurants, and the pool, while clearly a large park of the experience here, did not make my relatively busy itinerary as I wanted to get out and see other things. The room itself was comfortable. The AC was loud and ran constantly (though if you're looking for a noise machine to help with sleep that might not be the worst thing) during a summer heat wave, but it was successful in achieving the relatively low temperatures I like to sleep at. I misplaced a key card and was given a replacement by showing my ID without difficulty (shortly before I found it anyway). The hotel had a considerable and comfortable lobby. It may be a different experience once the massive streetcar project which runs outside is finished. Right now driving and walking are both a little inconvenient. The hotel was bustling, so clearly people found a way to get here.

There's a lot we love about this property: Gorgeous, charming, historic and everything feels very carefully curated The pool - with its in-water loungers, padded seats, large umbrellas, and helpful servers The gym is a great one stop shop: Peloton, treadmills, yoga mats, free weights, benches, water station, bathroom right inside the gym, too Rooms themselves are also well kept, beautiful and elevated And then there's a few things that miss the mark sometimes: The food and beverage service here tends to be pretty underwhelming in my experience (albeit, to be fair: I have not eaten at the Chophouse) Our various credit card perks have included breakfast for most of our stays and we have always found the options to be a little lackluster. For example, one or two of the breakfast entrees specifically says it comes with "lyonnaise" potatoes...but then they're served with fried, cubed potatoes that could be mistaken for grocery store frozen breakfast potatoes. The coffee offerings in both the coffeeshop and the Orleans room are passable - admittedly, I'm fairly picky on this point so my guest is that many guests find it sufficient to meet their needs. But I have yet to try anything that could compete with some other local spots. And then the real big bummer this time around: the pool club being operated differently almost every season. By nature, I'm kind of an over communicator - I like posted rules and visible expectations so that I can plan accordingly... And I take note of those things and keep them in mind when I return to a particular spot. However, I have vivid memories of being served around the pool side directly from the Orleans room a couple years ago... And that's no longer allowed. I also remember distinctly being able to bring in our own meal to enjoy around the pool, whether it was a snack from a nearby grocery store or a sandwich from a local eatery in Blackstone... And that is also no longer allowed. In addition to those restrictions that were new to me, it seems clear that there's been a big push toward more pool club memberships/day passes and one of the downsides is that only a third of the pool seating is actually available to Hotel guests. This meant that on more than one occasion during our 3 days there, we had to be strategic about finding seats... And when you have spent your hard-earned money to enjoy the beautiful facilities, it feels pretty irksome to get caught in a cutthroat game of saving chairs. It honestly felt a little bit like the hotel guests were treated like a nuisance rather than welcome guests who paid to be there. One other way that this showed up for our particular stay was with regards to using property credits to pay: as a generous benefit of one of our premium credit cards, we were given a $100 property credit. The fine print before we came stated that it could be used on food or valet costs or other incidentals at the hotel except for taxes and actual room payment... We were very much looking forward to using this credit across our few days to cover poolside lunches... But because the pool club is operated as an independent entity, they could not charge it to our room, therefore making it impossible to use our property credit to cover lunch. Again, I'm aware that this issue does not apply to every guest (and when we asked the front desk about it, they stated that it was explicitly listed on the exclusion paperwork they gave us at check-in.. but we didn't take that with us to our room, because we thought we already knew the exclusions from scanning the emails and booking materials ahead of time.. it was a different statement than what was provided online). Overall, we still love the Cottonwood, but the ever-changing rules and policies are making it a little bit harder to feel eager to be loyal.
