I adopted both of my dogs from HUA. They are an amazing organization that truly cares about animals and finding good homes for them. A frequent complaint is they are "too picky." Seriously? They want the very best experience for the animals they are responsible for finding good homes for. Unfortunately humans lie and deceive sometimes. HUA has had experience with that. My 2 dogs have each been through a lot before they were rescued. I had to put up a 6 foot fence to adopt and keep them safe. They are happy, safe , spoiled and loved and have been with me for several years. JC is such a good guard dog! Quinccy has c only one eye and is deaf (due to bad breading). They are my family. My wife and I donated very substantially over the years and adopted from them twice. A year ago we took in a colony of 4 pregnant cats that produced a dozen kittens. We had ALL -- mothers and kittens -- spayed, neutered and given all shots plus vet care, which was a VERY substantial expense. I recently I appealed (three times) to HUA to help us find homes for four remaining cats, to save them from the coyotes that roam the neighborhood. I was told in NO uncertain terms that they would NOT accept cats. That, despite their website advertsing their cats for adoption, and their professed no-kill policy. I was trying to save these cats from death by coyote, but nothing I said, nor the years of donations, made any difference. I am more than angry. Ifeel used and betrayed. It's a shame that HUA's "humanity" apparently can be turned on and off like the hot water. read more

We were looking for a sweet dog to give love to and to entertain our hyper boxer male. We found a few to meet and required an application first. Upon the completion we had to schedule a home interview via FaceTime. All went well so we drove down to check out the facility. This place is huge!!! So many places for pets to stay until adopted that are clean and well maintained. Their dedication to adopting/rescuing pets sees no limitations! Christy assisted us in finding our perfect girl Boo. We opted to wait 2 weeks to adopt her to make sure she was healed from her spay and claw surgery along with receiving a clean Bill of health. The day of adoption was perfect! We were greeted, given all the proper paperwork, photos taken, and adoption pledge given. We love this facility and will definitely look there again if we ever need another pet. We adopted Penn, my husband and two boys 7&8 on January 4, 2020. After having him here for a little over a month and his tummy issues I have spent over seven hundred dollars on his. We loved Penn so much, the medical cost wasn't the issue, it's that he bit my son! All unprovoked! My son came in the front room as my husband, Penn and I were here on the couch. He saw my son come in the room and was talking to us. Went in to give my husband a hug and he lurched up wasn't touched and bit my son in the face! I am beyond angry that they have reposted him not mentioning his stomach issues or that he shouldn't be with kids! He is a biter! My heart breaks but I would NEVER ADOPT FROM HERE AGAIN! My family is extremely disappointed today! We have been going through the application process for weeks! Our vet was called, home visit done and the meet & greet scheduled! We were at the top of the list! We've had larger dogs and small terriers for decades! Today we show up to meet Owen and felt we didn't even have a chance to adopt before our puppy met Owen. The lady hadn't even reviewed our application. She told us this! She was extremely pessimistic throughout the meeting. It seemed that she was waiting for something to happen that she didn't like. She already had her mind made up. She had made plenty of remarks and none were too positive! If the size of our dog was an issue we never should have had a meet & greet! We would never bring in a new puppy and not make sure he was safe and happy! We now have two extremely disappointed girls wondering what was so bad about our family. You guys missed out on a great home for Owen! Our opinion of adoption has changed. Review your applications before you break hearts! Extremely disappointed. read more

I am coming up on 2 years with my adopted dog, Gus. When I applied, I was given a 3 page questionnaire, had a home visit from a volunteer, and drove the 40 miles to meet him. There was no pressure at all and I brought him home on Halloween. He has been a joy and a treasure. I have followed HUA over this time and have found them to be hard working and compassionate. I am so angry with HUA. That lady is unfair and rude. I drove my dog to Nebraska because I felt it best to rehome her with everything going on in my life and I believed they would do right by her. My dog was a puppy mill breeder rescue and had made tremendous progress, but wasn't yet housebroken. She was still scared of other people and prone to bloody colitis attacks and I hoped I could pay to have her be a sanctuary sweetheart. At the least, she needed a home with someone there. When I realized this wasn't going to be good for my dog, I asked to adopt her and was told I gave them a perfect dog and didn't deserve to have her. She was never put on the site, but they adopted her to someone who works all day and has an older dog at home. My dog will have a sleep mate, not a playmate, and she won't have anyone around to help her learn to go outside or monitor her for an attack that could be deadly. read more

I recently applied to adopt a dog from this rescue. They stated that he was already adopted. Yet, he is still listed on the website as available. I am a bit leery of this as, they solicit "sponsorships" from people for the dogs on the website. My issue is...is it ethical to solicit a sponsorship for a dog that they have already adopted out? Also, why do they leave the dogs on the website if they have already been adopted? I personally don't trust them and will not be supporting their rescue. I am very disappointed. read more

It is with pleasure to provide a review of Hearts United for Animals. I started following HUA on Facebook a year ago. I would see their postings, read the heartfelt stories of the animals coming into HUA and then being adopted into happy homes. I would watch their frequent HUA contests they would have showcasing their dogs up for adoption and I would donate $10 as they posted in need, but it wasn't until recently I started seeing the work they do more closely. I recently adopted a nine year old puppy mill survivor from them. I was a new adoptee so I was put through their process of qualifying a good home for their dogs. I was so impressed by their thoroughness and their attention to detail in making sure that the people who adopt their dogs are committed to spending a lifetime with their animals. And I was even more confident in HUA when we signed the paperwork for my new dog that included an agreement that if for some reason I cannot care for the dog I adopted that I would agree to give the dog back to HUA. HUA makes a lifetime commitment to their dogs they rescue. HUA is beyond amazing and the people there are simply incredible! I am beyond grateful for HUA and they will forever be in my thoughts and prayers for the work they do on behalf of animals. read more

I adopted a dog from HUA and he was a wonderful. My son and many friends have also adopted from HUA with great success. They take wonderful care of the animals, feeding them well, getting vet care, giving them treats and toys, and treating each one with attention and love. They are careful with adoptions so that the pet goes to a good home. The animals may have been traumatized in their previous situation and rehabilitated at HUA so their new home needs to be a good fit. Another reviewer said the website might not be up to date as far as adoptions listed. The website relies on volunteers and they might be a little behind at times of lots of adoptions. The reviewer also complains about them "soliciting sponsorships". They are not aggressive about it but you can be a "buddy" to offer some support for a dog waiting to be adopted. They will let you know when the dog is adopted and you can switch to another "buddy" or end your support at any time. They are active in surrounding communities offering low cost neuter/spay and help to pet owners who run into serious problems supporting their pets. They recently started an outreach to give care to pets of homeless veterans in Victory Village apartments in Omaha working with a Girl Scout group and veterinarian Dr Jensen. read more

I adopted my little sweetheart, Pearl, from HUA in March. I had just lost my dear little chihuahua Boo. Everyone was so patient- the personal attention I received was gentle and thorough. The staff and volunteers let me know in great detail the history and personality of each dog. They let me visit several weekends in a row so that I could learn more about the dogs and find one that would be a good friend for Attie. All of their dogs get attention and love. This shelter has labored tirelessly to educate the public on topics surrounding animal welfare. They will shelter pets for women that are victims of domestic violence. They have rescued countless animals during natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina and the more recent flooding closer to home. HUA is far more than an animal shelter. They have been a source of education for the public for years. I knew nothing about puppy mills until I found their website. They serve as a model for what shelter systems could look like if everyone had their work ethic. I am so grateful that I found them (and that I found my little Pearl there). read more

HUA always puts the animals first and that is why we were drawn to them when looking for a new family member. We visited once and we weren't able to see many dogs because it was late on Saturday and they didn't have many volunteers around to help, which I understand because they rely on volunteers. We did see a few wonderful dogs through the fences and came back the following week during hours that were better for them (around 11 am). The volunteer was very personable and brought the German Shepherd we wanted to see to meet us in the obstacle course area. She was very shy and they explained to us her story and everything they have noticed about her so far. We fell in love and went home with our sweet Zoe (known as Constance at HUA). We are so lucky to have found her and HUA was the match maker. They do a good job and have a lot of animals who need homes! read more
