First and sadly, last place we would go. We recently visited Heater Allen in McMinnville for their Oktoberfest with six family members, excited to support a local spot that calls itself "kid friendly." Unfortunately, the way we were treated made us feel anything but welcome. Our 3-year-old was playing with the toy bin they provide for kids inside, while we were mainly gathered outside. Like any toddler, he made a mess, but I was mindful of it and cleaned up after him when asked. About 15-20 minutes later, I noticed the entire toy bin had been removed. When I asked the staff member (manager?) why, her response was curt and dismissive--essentially saying she was tired of cleaning up after kids. She even said she "had kids too," but the tone felt more like scolding than understanding. I explained that we come to places like this because they advertise themselves as family-friendly. Instead of hospitality, we were made to feel like a burden, as though children weren't actually welcome. The worst part was overhearing her continue to talk about us to others while we were still there. That crossed the line from unprofessional to just plain rude. We ended up leaving and taking our business elsewhere. For parents constantly searching for places to enjoy a beer while their kids have space to play, I can confidently say Heater Allen is not it. If you don't want children there, don't advertise as kid-friendly--it's misleading and creates an experience that feels hostile for families. read more

I have had Heater Allen several different times and I have to say that I am always highly impressed when I get one of their beers. The Das Bier is one of my favorites by them. This beer is a Kolsch and I always like this beer style due to it's lightness and crispness. That is no exception here with it's clean and floral flavor profile this is an excellent kolsch that I highly recommend if you like this beer style. Another favorite which I have had on more than one occasion is their Czech style Pilsner. Again, a very light beer in which I admire the clean, smooth, hoppy and dry flavors. I am a big fan of pilsners in general and this one is definitely my top favorite out of what I have tried from Heater Allen so far. I have had this beer quite a few times and always come back to it I like it that much. Another impressive beer that isn't any slouch is the Lenzbock, a Maibock style beer. This beer is a malty one but remains light and floral and has a bit of an essence of Spring to it. And then finally I have had the Marzen Lager which I highly recommend as well. Again a malty beer with sweet and subtle notes. I rate this beer very high on Untappd simply because it's a wonderful one to experience and drink. They also do collaboration beers. There was a great beer I had from Wayfinder Brewing, the Teriffica Italian Style Horror Pils, this beer is an Italian style pilsner which I highly recommend (at this point I just highly recommend everything) and loved immediately with it's dry, hoppy, bitter and honey flavor highlights I was instantly in love with it. Of course my instant fondness for it also had to do with their reference to Italian horror films which I am a big fan of with the concept and art for this beer. Heater Allen is a master of light beers and if you get a chance I highly suggest giving their beers a try. My beer drinking experiences with this brewery never, ever disappoint. read more

Awesome brewery! It's off the beaten path but definitely worth a visit. It sounds like their tap room is recently open. They had a variety of German style beers. The brewers were really friendly and let us sample several beers. I had a Rauch Bock smoked red. It was excellent! They have a good selection of beers, I would recommend a stop! read more

Very nice folks here making good beer. Almost exclusively lager beers, just a few ales here and there. Clean, generally malty to balanced malt/hops though they have made a few hoppy beers here and there. You're basically in the brewery. They have a tasting room with taps and a bar (and a popcorn popper) outside the cold room, with a chalk board with available beers and a refrigerator holding bottled beers available to buy. Full pours or flights are available. Plus, $5 for one of their 22oz bomber standard beers isn't a bad deal. Low profile place. Parking is a gravel lot at the end of NE 10th. You really have to look for the place, or see the brewery truck with the logo on the side. Find it, though, and you will be rewarded. read more

A fabulous small brewery that deserves to be on the "A" list of Portland-area beer places. The reasons it's not, I guess, are 1) it is an hour's drive from Portland; 2) it's a production brewery, not a brewpub and not even regular tasting hours; 3) the beer is selling as fast as they make it, so they don't promote it much because they don't need to! But I advise any beer fans visiting or living in the Portland area to try these beers. You can buy them in 22-oz bottles at New Seasons and other high-end supermarkets in Portland. And you'll occasionally find them on tap at pubs (I saw one recently at Hawthorne Hophouse). As for visiting the brewery -- call ahead and the owner will arrange a tour and tasting. You can buy bottles there and they are about to start offering growler fills. T-shirts and beer glasses also are available. The best time to go, though, is for one of their special events, which happen seasonally. Their Bobtoberfest (in honor of the brewer-owner's late brother), in mid-September, was a terrific event this year, with great live blues, terrific artisan sausages (made with Heater Allen beer) and other food and of course great beer. Heater Allen makes German-style lagers, which are tricky to make and rare to find on the West Coast brewing scene. It also is difficult to obtain good beer from Germany as these delicate beers don't travel as well as the heavier stouts and ales from Great Britain. Expand your palate and try these beers! I give the beers 5 stars -- the reason I give the place only 4 is because it's not really open regularly for visitors. (Maybe that will change.) Prost! read more

OK, so my poetry sucks, but the beer made by Heater Allen doesn't. I found this place by accident while visiting wineries in McMinnville. Talk about a micro brewery, this place is not much bigger than a good sized living room, but the beers that come out of here are marvelous Belgian style Ales. I've found his beers around town at specialty stores and of course you can pick them up at the brewery in McMinnville-call ahead to make sure there will be somebody there, this is really a small operation. Was a bit miffed after driving to this out of the way place at precisely 2 p.m. (The advertised opening) only to be greeted by someone who wasn't really all that friendly telling us they didn't open until 3 p.m. Either open when you say you will or change you advertising. We stopped in here yesterday as part of our Friday after Thanksgiving tasting in the wine country. We have one person who is primarily a beer drinker, so stopped by at his request. Glad we did. The first time we stopped, a couple of years ago, i discovered my favorite Pilsner and we have had it around for several years now. This time we tasted six beers. I really enjoyed the Dunkel and Coastal. in fact, we bought some, since it is hard to find is other than a store that is really serious about beer. in fact, for the first time since an "adventure" with Guiness Stout in college, i enjoyed the darker beer, Shady Paws. We had eight of us tasting and everyone was happy. This was a wonderful addition to our wine tasting. read more

As a northwest IPA fan, usually I'm not really into this type of Bavarian style beer. But, I'll make an exception for Heater-Allen! The brewery is small, homey, and they try to help you select a taste (or sample tray) to match your preferences. I'm trying to migrate away from my "hop-head" rut and these could be my gateway brewery to help me do just that! Definitely worth a visit! read more

Full disclosure, I'm related to the brewers. As of July 2016, they have 8 beers on tap, some seasonal and some that they have year round. They have small tap/tasting room open Fridays 3:00 - 6:00 pm and Saturdays noon to 5:00 through Thanksgiving. Otherwise they are available by appointment. My favorite is Schwarz - "black" in German; I do like darks beers better than light, hoppy IPAs (bleh). Other favorites: Bobtoberfest, Isarweizen, Dunkel, and their Bock. They're known for their outstanding Pils (#1 in world on ratebeer.com), which I can enjoy if it's really hot out. Yummy, award-winning beers and they may give you an impromptu tour if you ask and they aren't super busy. read more

I met a lovely couple vacationing in Asheville North Carolina. While I was serving them beers at Barley's Taproom they seemed both engaged with one another and our fine city. Beer-tending can be a complicated balance between service and opinion, I found their company a respite from my typical beer related stops and starts. Character drives success and in my humble opinion their subdued, funny and thoughtful conversation made me have a little bit more faith in the attitude and manner of American craft beer hype. So it is a snowy evening and I have just sat down with their Pilsner, they so generously left for me before leaving town. I must say it is a nice marriage between the expected, and the sublime... it has the pronounced back of the mouth finish of the hop smoothed with the malt integrity...Good people good beer...it doesn't get better than this.
