The monks of the Mount Angel Benedictine Abbey are practicing a centuries old tradition... As part of their daily observation of life, they brew beer. Let me tell you it is absolutely outstanding. The grounds are breathtaking, on a little hillside outside of Mount Angel, just under an hour south Portland. I highly recommend that you take one of the more scenic drives instead of just blasting down I-5, but you do you. It's not a restaurant per se. But there are snacks. And there is a large selection of beer. My partner and I already knew that we had no idea what we wanted because we want everything and that would make driving home extremely difficult. So we opted for the only logical choice: the sampler Their sampler boards come with either four or five slots, and they provide a 4 ounce pour into the sampler glass. We each got a five spot board, and two additional drinking glasses so that we could pour splits, and were thus able to sample 10 of the brews on tap. We also decided that snacks were in order so we got the spinach, artichoke dip, times two. You order at the counter and when your order is prepared, you are called and can pick it up. It's a very simple set up, harkening back to a simpler time in many ways. Some of the taps vary seasonally. Some of them are occasionally just out. I can't tell you what you're going to find. But I can tell you if the Hairshirt, the Half Cloak, and the Little Tyrant are on tap? You definitely want to sample those. This is not typical mid-grade Portland IPA... These are exceptional brews across a variety of styles Highly recommended! I go down every time I get a chance and suggest that you might want to consider that as well

What we had was the Springboard Semi-Sweet Cider. It lived up to it's name nicely as it was only slightly sweet and ran on the dry side which is typically what I like with cider. I don't usually want it to be too sweet. Flavor features you will find with this cider are juicy, sweet(not in a heavy handed way), apple and a floral aspect. I added this cider place to a new Yelp list titled "worth returning to" as it is indeed worth returning to to try out their other cider options if not get the wonderful Semi-Sweet Cider again.

For this cidery we got a nice, dry cider. A type of cider that Steve and I prefer most of the time over the very sweet ones. The name of this cider was Cat La Roux Perlant. This cider as most good apple based ciders should have has apple involved in it as well as a tartness, an astringentness and a dry finish. Like a many coders it is light bodied which in most cases is what we always prefer when it comes to ciders. There are other cider options from this cidery that look quite promising for delivering a good quality product so that is something to look forward to whenever the opportunity arises again to have more cider from Raw.

There are also some signs along the way and a large sign in the driveway. Parking was easy and the place was well paved for ADA. The tasting room is small but perfect for a few groups and comfy seating. The outdoor area looks nice for picnics, dogs, tasting liquors etc. We purchased the corn whiskey and espresso liqueur. The corn whiskey was smooth and liqeur was subtle in sweetness (which is preferable). The owner was very nice and knew anything you wanted to know about their product. We enjoy natural wines and thankfully AI suggested Day Wines. After a rather beautiful but stuffy and unfriendly tasting earlier at another winery (that we are members at!), our experience at Day Wines was the polar opposite. We were greeted by the nicest staff, and although we were their last appt at the end of the day, they warmly welcomed us and never rushed us. We enjoyed chatting to them about the winery and their wines. They also brought out an extra wine off the tasting based on what we chatted about, and we bought a few bottles to take home, including a couple of the bonus pour. It was hard to only buy a few! It was $25 for a tasting flight of 5 wines, which especially coming from CA seems super reasonable. They also waive tasting with $75 wine purchase which is easy to do. Very glad we found Day Wines, and I can't wait to share with our friends and enjoy at home! Excited to see what comes out from them in the coming years.
