Not a fan. Annoyed at over priced everything. Total upscale awful. Doesn't belong on the map of the Bourbon trail

Came in two days ago for a tasting which was $10 and lasted about 45mins. It was a good experience just not what I expected. The tasting seemed a little dragged on and slow maybe because it was the end of the day/last tasting. Maybe they were tired. Also the room we were in you could hear the other group in the other room so it was hard to hear (maybe they were on the more upbeat fun tasting).The tasting itself seemed like they gave small pours. It made it hard to get an idea if you actually liked what you were trying. You only had a enough to take one sip. Lucky for us this was the last stop of the day so it didn't matter to much. We started off with old Fitzgerald which was awesome but they had sold out of it that morning. They also didn't have one other bottle we tasted. Out of the 4 bottles we tried they only had half available to purchase. We wished we tried some that were available to purchase. Which is what we had been doing at the other distilleries. Once their restaurant is complete and open I would recommend coming here for a bite to eat and trying some bourbon that way. Otherwise skip it if your not trying to hit all the distilleries on the trail. read more

As the largest family owned bourbon distillery Heaven Hill is quite an impressive operation. The grounds more closely resemble a military compound than a distillery as all of their rickhouses are impressively similar and neatly organized. The "tour" is more of a seminar with a tasting to follow. It was nice after having done numerous other true tours on the bourbon trail, however if this is your first experience at a distillery, you will be missing out on a lot. The tasting is good, and because Heaven Hill produces so many different labels, you get to try bourbon/whiskey from a wide spectrum of recipes (wheated, high rye, straight rye). You can learn a lot about bourbon from this tour, but you'll definitely miss out on a large chunk of the experience if this is your only distillery stop. read more

Stopped by to check out the gift shop. Like of 25 people outside after about 30 minutes and only about 5 people let in from the line ended up leaving. No one comes out to welcome you or tell you what the line is about. The girl behind went inside to use the restroom and asked about the process. Found out the line was because they only have two cashiers for the gift shop. The one lady at the door was rude and they keep the doors locked to limit the crowd. Very unwelcoming and won't be going back! read more

We were excited to tour Heaven Hill because they make some of our favorite go-to spirits. The Bourbon Heritage Center is really nice and has some really cool stuff to look at. Our tour guide was Herb and he was the highlight of the experience. He was engaging, knowledgeable, friendly, and funny as well. I can only give them four stars because the tasting at the end of the Mashbill Tour only let's you taste Larceny, Elijah Craig Small Batch, and Rittenhouse Rye. They make better stuff than that, but maybe that's because they have the Evan Williams Experience in Louisville. Another reason is they only take you into a warehouse and nowhere else on the property. Those two items were just a bit disappointing. However, this stop was definitely worth it. read more

Disneyland for bourbon groupies. You could do a lot worse than kill an hour here. Tours are free, highlighted by a rick house walk-through which by itself makes the trip worthwhile. (The tasting is the proverbial icing.) Still, there are minor drawbacks. Everything from the short film to the tour guide's canned responses to questions is a lot more corporate propaganda than science or education. I think the lady said something about Jesus turning loaves and fishes into bourbon. (Evan Williams bourbon, of course.) And the other negative is that they don't do any distilling here. That's all done off-site. Given that the distilling is much of the process, it might be worthwhile to choose a different tour on the Bourbon Trail. read more

This was BY FAR the stand out of the three distilleries we visited as we rode the western half of the "Bourbon Trail". As the entrance indicates, this is one of the "Thousand things to do" before you die according to that book that came out. And how! Our tour guide, a bee hived honey named Ann? or Sue? was a sprightly gal of sixty or seventy. She had an obvious passion for the brown stuff and this tour was fun. First, we again sat through a 12 minute movie that was long on local history and the history of bourbon, which according to local legend was created when a spendthrift minister/bootleg whiskey producer accidentially set his barrels on fire. He used them anyway and the interaction of the charred sweet white oak with moonshine created the rich deliciousness of bourbon. Heaven Hill is the largest remaining independent distillery- Makers Mark and Jim Beam are owned by the same multi national. Heaven Hill's main brand is Evan Williams. After the movie we got to go inside a warehouse- that was a trip- see the photos I uploaded. The interior is seven stories of the sweetest smelling stuff you will ever have the pleasure to "nose". The sweet smell is due to the evaporation- they lose five percent a year that way. After the warehouse tour you get to taste bourbon inside of a barrel- no lie. The small servings were more then counter balanced by the handy bourbon drinking tips- specifically- cool down your glass with a few drops of water to "open up" the bourbon molecules. That's just good science! Also, we bought a hilarious children's toy called the Bourbon Barrel Buddy- a plush Bourbon Barrel toy stuffed with wheat, corn and rye grain plush "friends" inside. again, good to see the bourbon distillers appealing to their future consumers early. read more

Heaven Hill was pretty interesting. I really thought I would be really bored at this tour but I learned and enjoyed it a lot. Heaven Hill makes or owns a few alcohol such as: Hypnotic, Evan Williams, etc. The giftshop is pretty big. They had some great information stations inside the giftshop and I love that they had a place where you can smell the different ages bourbon in the giftshop, too. Now onto to the tour: The tour guide had some great jokes, very knowledge, and he seems to really love what he was doing. They offer a great tour (can last up to 1 to 1.5 hours), I personally enjoyed it because the tour guide was so good to us. The tasting part was my favorite part (duh!) and it is my FAVORITE tasting from the KBT. Maybe because the tasting room was so pretty and it was inside a cool barrel shaped room and you sit around a bar. The way he explained how each bourbon was very detailed and he showed us how to drink in a way that made me taste the flavors fully. This wasn't my favorite tour on the Bourbon Trail. So why the four stars? Because Paul, our tour guide, was the best guide we had in our two days on the trail. He was sweet, kind, and totally humble. That man deserves a raise... Or at least more people raising their glasses to him. Otherwise, the tour wasn't anything special. Because they don't distill on site, it's mostly wandering around a rickhouse looking at barrels and talking about aging, storing, etc. The barrel tasting room was kind of cool, though it seems like a fail from an acoustics standpoint. It's hard to hear in there (it's open air) when the people outside are milling around exhibits and doing some sort of tasting. Tasting was good. Wish we had known about the Connoisseur tour, which skips most of the fluff and gets straight to the tasting. Then again, had we done that, we wouldn't have met Paul. It was a nice stop and a bit of a respite after some time in the car. Worth a pop-in if you're headed that direction. read more

Stunning building to welcome visitors. Incredible attention to detail to tell the long history of Bourbon and the influence the families involved with this Bourbon plus the Bardstown region has had in the development of America's Spirit - Bourbon. With little time, we opted for the mini-tour, 30-40 minutes. They offer a full immersion tour of up to 3 hours which includes a private tasting in a cool, over-sized private barrel shaped tasting room. If this had been our first Bourbon Tour, I would likely have taken advantage of this tour but is was our 5th Bourbon tour in 2 days...only so many times you can hear about All Bourbons are Whiskeys but not all Whiskeys are Bourbon... Bev was our hostess and she's been with the Firm for many years. Deeply knowledgeable and friendly. As we were buying bottles, she was kind enough to add a wheated Bourbon as an extra to our tasting. Look, the mini tour was only $3, so how many tasting do you expect! We were glad to get the extra tasting and it helped since I bout the Wheat Bourbon - sweeter than then sour driven Rye bourbons. Heaven Hill has one of the most impressive Visitors Centers you will find in Bardstown. There are plenty of educational opportunities, even without having to go on a tour. The gift shop offers nearly everything under the sun, from various Heaven Hill brands of whiskeys to Evan Williams sauces, to t-shirts, etc. This year, we took part of their newest tour, the Whiskey Connoisseur's Experience. For $15, you sample four Heaven Hill ultra-premium whiskeys. This is a unique experience I haven't seen at any other distillery. Don't pass this up. Last year my wife and I took the general tour. It was fascinating and well worth the time. This is a huge campus, and while you don't get to see everything, you get the gist. read more

The Distillery and the Bourbon Heritage Center is one and the same really. However, the sheer size of the place gives options about tours. 2 of them are free and run up to 90 minutes. A 90 minute tour about bourbon-granted they do mention the other liquors they produce but it's still tied into bourbon. They are both free with the longer tours being a little pricey. However, I did enjoy the tasting which showcased some of their more pricey bourbons and my friend and I were in a rush so we got essentially what was a private tasting and our guide/docent, Bob really knew his stuff-not just about bourbon, not just about the other liquors Heaven Hill makes but about the bourbon trail as well. He also mentioned Hypnotiq as "the liquor you may know from high school." HAHAHA...awesome! They also have a small stack of bourbon and whiskey based sauces you can sample-the fruit ones (jams, marmalades) were the best. I actually have the Elijah Craig 18 year old which is a great bourbon. The Evan Williams 12 was really good as well, and my friend bought it up right away. Overall, I really enjoyed the tasting and listening to Bob who not only had a good knowledge of bourbon but also pushed the idea that you like what you like no matter what the experts say. Heaven Hill is just on the outskirts of Louisville and another great stop on the Bourbon Trail. Start with a quick movie and tour with people that really love bourbon. Then sit down in their tasting room for the real treat. The Commonwealth restricts tasting to two half ounce pours, but you will really enjoy it. The tasting room was made to look like a huge barrel and it had a modern feel that would be a hip bar if they opened it up for that. Came for a semi-private evening event/tour. Included some decent appetizers but we came for the bourbon. Had a chance to taste right from the barrel. This was one of my favorite stops along the bourbon trail. Three stars for the food, but five stars for the bourbon. read more

This Bourbon trail stop is very interesting and neat. The tour mostly takes you to the warehouses where you can see where and how the bourbons are being stored and kept. It's also really neat to learn about how many other spirits Heaven Hill distillery owns! Susan was also a great tour guide! Explained everything so clearly. It is also a mile from Willett, which is not on he Bourbon Trail, but on the Bourbon CRAFT Trail. (Blue passport). read more

While in Kentucky my husband wanted to visit some distilleries and taste bourbon. Most required advance reservations and do a tour on top of the tasting. This was the only place he could find that offered strictly tastings in their bar area. Nice setting, good bourbon, food options available. The employees at the front desk and the gift shop were extremely courteous and helpful. Iris is perfect at her job. After that, things went down hill with the tour guide for the 2:00 tour on Thursday, October 25. While he appeared to be very knowledgeable about the trade, he seemed as though he was in a rush. He asked for a show of hands for those in the crowd that had been on a distillery tour before, and once he knew we all had, he stated that he would not bore us with the details of how whiskey was made. What if his version added something that we had never heard? A couple of tours does not make us experts. I know, this seems small, and it was. But I guess the thing that really set me back was the fact that throughout the tour he bashed Maker's Mark and their tour 5 or 6 times. It appeared as if he had some kind of axe to grind with them. I almost asked him how long it had been since he was fired from Maker's Mark. I saw this to be very unprofessional especially since he stated during the tour that everyone in the Bourbon business was family. But, then again, I guess we talk the worst about our family huh? The tasting was informative and the brands were good. But he seemed rushed during that as well and made a few mistakes, telling us we were tasting one brand while he was holding up a bottle of another brand. It was a night and day comparison to the tour of Jim Beam that I had just come from. And lastly, while the tour of the rickhouse was nice, I was expecting an actual tour of the distillery. With all things considered, if you are just going to guide people through a warehouse of barrels, then your delivery of the information should be informative as well as professional. read more

Everything about this tour was a let down besides the tasting. Basically you pay $10, they give you a 10 minute tour of the barrels, then you taste four different types of bourbons. Our tour guide seemed really tired or just out of shape. Seemed to be running out of breath as she talked about the different types of bourbons Heaven Hill stocks. They don't make their own bourbon. We were unaware of this until after the tour. We did this tour a day after Maker's Mark. It was like day and night. Nothing compares to Maker's tour. Just wasn't impressed, besides the Elijah Craig bourbon. That went down nicely. read more

I was very impressed by the Heritage Center which is fairly new. The tour and the tasting is very similar to the others and they really push their brands, which is OK since they are good. They have a very nice and well stocked gift shop. Most do their stuff is very overpriced. Guess they must be loosing money and making it up in the shop. read more

One of the best "tours" after awhile you can only hear so much about barrels and the process. Let's be honest you do to the tours so you can do the tasting at the end. This one we watched a short PowerPoint presentation on their history and got straight to the tasting. You taste 4 different bourbons one of which is to compare with the rest one they deemed not fit to sell. Our favorite was the last one aged in a cognac cask. The one down side is we tasted a 12 year that we later discovered was phased out. Would have loved to take that one home. The whole tasting tour was $20 a person and you keep the glasses. I don't mind paying but tired of collecting glasses. The distillery itself isn't much to look at but the tasting house is full of great history and love that it's still owned by a single family. A welcomed break from the more cooperate distilleries on the trail. read more

This was our second "tour" of the day - mostly stopping because it was on our way home from Maker's Mark. The tour itself was not great. Our guide did a nice job, but pretty much all you get is someone to lead you around to the displays that you could look at otherwise. For the price of your ticket, you basically got someone to answer questions and throw in a few extra bits of knowledge. Oh - and some samples! :) At the end of our tour we were brought into a tasting area that included our group of guys and some other folks. I learned more about the products and different ways to enjoy them. It's amazing how a little water or ice can change the taste! Our guide excused everyone after the tasting was over, but us lag behind - she then whipped out the 12 year old single batch bottle and had us taste the "good stuff". I had a new best friend at that point... So not really the best tour, but worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

I didn't think I would like this place as much as I did. I think it had to do with the shear variety of brands they have under one roof (and just coming from Wild Turkey and thinking it would be another of those experiences). In the end though, this was an excellent stop. We didn't have time for the tour (although they looked awesome and we will be coming back for one), but we did try some bourbon in the tasting room. After a little conversation the guy who was pouring for us really opened up (I don't blame him, I wouldn't want to give the same speech every day for groups, most of which are just looking for their free drink) and we learned a lot about their particular bourbons. What really made this a great experience was the staff. After we selected a bottle and checking out everyone who was working there said thank you and goodbye to us. It wasn't just a thanks and next, it was incredibly warm. I almost felt like we had just eaten a meal at their house and now we were leaving. read more

Heaven Hill is a ginormous distillery that makes over 100 different brands. Their main hall has a pretty cool history display for bourbon-making in the area, but it seems they need to have it to keep you occupied while you wait for the Bourbon class (they don't really do tours). So, for the class they seat around 50 or so people in a room at tables of 4, and do a presentation. The presentation has the history of the distillery and talks about different types of bourbon that they make, and you taste the bourbons as they go. The presenters were pretty funny for us, and the bourbon was decent to good, so it was pretty cool. read more

I did the Whiskey Connoisseur tour and it was one of the better tours on the whole trail. Let's be honest, after a few distillery tours, you know how Bourbon is made. This tour is made for the trail veteran that does not need to hear how Bourbon is made...again and again. The $20 tour was only 30-minutes long. We got a brief history of the company & Bourbon in Kentucky in general...then quickly to the tasting. We had 4 different kinds, and 3 of them were over $100 a bottle (the most expensive was aged 23 years and costs $279.99; only available there). Joan gave us a quick rundown on how to properly drink the Bourbon. Joan was great, and this tour is definitely a nice change of pace from the standard bourbon trail tours. Somewhat of a "down home" distillery, Heaven Hill is a bit more no-frills. We dispensed with the tour and went straight to the tasting. There are two of them held at their "Bourbon Heritage Center" where one can buy tickets for tours and tastings. While you wait, you can peruse the displays and exhibits showcasing the history of Heaven Hill and their family of spirits which include Evan Williams, Old Forrester and others. One of the two tours offered is called the Mashbill Tour ($10.00) which takes you through the distilling process. We've seen this several times at other distilleries, so, we opted for the Whiskey Connoisseur Experience ($20.00), which is just a tasting of several of their high end products. SOOOOO GOOD!!! Herb, our guide, was fantastic--funny and knowledgeable. As they say on their website: "During this half hour tour, your Bourbon host leads you through our gallery and touches on the history of both Bourbon and Heaven Hill. After your short tour, join us in our private tasting room and enjoy an educational tasting of up to four of our premium or limited release bourbons. Fun visit. Took the connesieur's tour. $20 got four pours of fantastic whiskey including the ultra-highend William Heavenhill 14 and Elijah 12 Barrel Proof. Our host Herb was fantastic. Explained the process briefly and went to the tastings. Explained each of the four superbly and shared insider knowledge and even a little chemistry that gave me a new view of my bourbon drinking experience. It was not a long visit although a new coffee travel mug was purchased at a better price than I'd think for a gift shop. Lots of items there. Worth the stop for certain. read more

The heritage center museum is wonderful too, and had Evan Williams sauce samples in addition to great souviners and a lot of information. Highly recommend. What a great customer service experience. On a quick stop my wife and I bought some bourbon and some coasters, however as we continued our drive to Mississippi, we somehow forgot the coasters. The 6 coasters were a couple of bucks of our $350 purchase, however when I called there two days later they had the coasters and they shipped them to me at no cost. Heaven Hill has been putting out quality bourbon for a lonnnnggg time and you'll get a nice history when you tour this place. Learn about Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, Larceny (a personal fave), and the others they bottle and distill. As far as bourbon gift shops go, this one is right there with Beam and Maker's as the best. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, it'll be well worth the money. After you leave here, Willett and Barton are right down the road. You definitely need to check those out as well. read more

This was an excellent visit. The tour with the Boubon lecture and tastings by Herb our guide was informative, fun, and a great way to begin the day at 10:30AM! We tasted five extraordinary bourbons both straight and with drops of water. The exhibits were interesting and shed light on the history of the area and bourbon. Everything in one large building so it is great for people who can't walk far and wheelchair visitors. The gift shop has some really tasty glazes and sauces, and gifts. This stop was not on my radar, but I am so glad we stopped! We walked through the awesome shop and it was the best bourbon souvenir shopping of all of our stops. We luckily got the last spots in the Connoisseur Tasting and it was a treat! It's a short movie (5 minutes) and tastings of some of the more expensive bourbon options. Herb was our guide and he was full of energy, personality and information. I'd suggest doing the tasting with him if you can. read more

We did the whiskey connoisseur experience and it was really great. If you've done one or two tours you'll realize they're all very similar so we opted to go this route and just do the tasting. Our guide was really knowledgeable and fun. We enjoyed learning about the whiskeys we sampled as well as the history of Heaven Hill. We also loved the selection of whiskeys we got to sample. read more
