I'm so disappointed to have to write a bad review, but I had such high hopes with this place. I went in two nights ago to buy the gumbo as I had had a taste of it and thought it was good. Mind you that I had only ordered to go but I still tipped. I paid over $30 for two bowls of gumbo. When I got home, there was much more rice in each bowl than gumbo (?!). NEVER AGAIN. Their prices need to be reduced to match the size of what they're serving. I DEFINITELY won't be eating here again. You should only eat there if you like eating super expensive white rice. read more

So we only had drinks here, but I LOVED the space. They played great music, all the cocktails were fun and delicious, it didn't feel like a tight space, and the food menu looked great. My husband and I were at Heavy Woods only because the Tchoup Shop is at this establishment. Let's start with the good, then the bad. PROs: good location with a comfortable vibe. CONs: stale draft beer and the Clothing Optional cocktail was disgusting. The place was out of IPA when we visited, my husband tried two different beers on tap and they were both stale. I had the cocktail and I figured anything with rum, coconut and pineapple can't be that bad. I was wrong, it had a very strange stale taste to it. We also ordered food and it was extremely disappointing, i'll explain myself in the Tchoup Shop review. Stale beer, stale cocktail, manhattan prices...that's the theme of this place. I've been to Heavy Woods a few times now and every single time I go I love it! The food is all around good and the crawfish mac and cheese is amazing. Best time to come is for happy hour (5-8) where most drinks are $4. It also has great outdoor seating during the summer and the inside is super cozy and warm in the winter! Service is so-so and kind of hit or miss, but the one bartender is great! read more

Can't say enough good things about this place, it's my go-to brunch spot in the neighborhood. Friendly waitstaff, delicious food. You just can't go wrong ordering here, unless of course you hate Cajun food. Very Bushwick, low-key reclaimed wood in the main room and curios behind the bar, and a cool back room with black and white flooring and black walls. My favorite dishes are the catfish po'boy for lunch and the Angry Hippie (vegetarian!) for brunch. Great Bloody Marys/Bloody Marias and Micheladas, and I also just discovered they make a mean key lime pie! read more

Easily my new favorite bar in Bushwick. Avoid the art douchery of tandem, the tropical vomit spewage of Bossa Nova Civic Club. kind of hate Yelp reviews because most of you are self-obsessed children (even by modern internet standards) with questionable opinions....but i had to get over that just to give Heavy Woods 5-stars. their beer selection is on point and affordable, and their food menu is now probably the best priced in the neighborhood. do the chicken biscuit, or the pork+crab po'boy; do any of the sides, particularly the red beans+rice. their New Orleans cuisine is all damn, damn good and SO affordable relative to Northeast Kingdom or Ghia or basically anywhere else around here. read more

If Heavy Woods was a person, it would be "my person", this is my favorite neighborhood's bar, small and friendly. Plenty of seats outside and inside, cheap beer, and AMAZING food. I had a little party at this venue Friday evening from 3 pm to around 8 pm for my book launch! (Little Pencil Finds HIs Forever Friends by Christine Calabrese) The service was impeccable, the room was huge, warm and inviting. I was able to set up my book and a little easel! The space was wonderful! The price of food and drink very reasonable. There was parking for us as we had come in from Huntington, Long Island. The owners were so kind to have us and give us this room! Our own space for our Little Picture Book! The illustrator and the author were present at this event along with family. So much fun! The cocktails were great, I just can't say enough about this place! If you want to have a nice little party in a warm space, this is the place! read more

This place is a brunch gem. The bloody Mary's are goddamn delicious. They have three types: Rosemary, beet, and bacon. I've TRIED EM ALL. Food was OK at best. Service was Great! Drinks were decent. Ordered the Catfish Po'boy and it was a huge disappointment! Fish had no flavor, bread was over toasted and sauce was blah! Was also ordered the black eye peas with rice...skip it! The only thing that saved this place was the delicious biscuit and red pepper jelly it comes with. I'm sure some of the other dishes containing meat are good. But for those Pescatarians and Vegetarians this is not the place for you...SORRY. Came here least night with a few friends for some drinks and a bite. The place has a very cool vibe and plays great music. They have a great list of Cocktails. I went for my usual margarita and it was delicious. We also were with a New Orleans native so please know that this food review is as legit as can be. we got the crispy pork belly cracklin which was amazing! Followed by the crispy chicken biscuit ( a little to much sauce but still yummy), the catfish po boy, crawfish mac & cheese and jambalaya. All of these items were authentic and delicious. We ended our meal with a slice of chess pie. I have never had it before and I must say it was incredible and a must try! Sister bar to the Bodega on St. Nicholas street. It does trendy Cajun style foods like gumbo but they do other dishes as well. They're open early for the morning rush and have great fresh ground coffee and teas. They also have a full bar and if you're a little cash strapped you can try what I call the "Hipster Special" which is either a PBR and a shot for $5 or a Narragansett and a shot for $6. They also have expensive wines and whiskeys if you're not drinking on the cheap as well. Friendly staff just like at the Bodega. Aside from being nice little bar with outdoor seating on a quiet street, Heavy Woods has a killer menu. New Orleans style comfort food with a gourmet touch. I've had some bad experiences with staff in the past- it is very hit or miss. This place is great when it isn't too crowded, but isn't worth a wait and some of the prices seem a bit high for what you get.
