i love heavy woods. the bartenders are friendly, the music is great (THEY'RE PLAYING JOHN DENVER RIGHT NOW), the ambiance is on point... the place is just so comfortable. wow the food is amazing. it's kind of expensies but i have no problem giving these guys my money. i love that i can sit here without being given dirty looks, and they just leave you alone to work on things and eat/drink. order at the bar then take a seat. during the daytime the place is flooded with natural sunlight and it's so freakin pretties. super chill place to work. thanks heavy woods. read more

I love Heavy Woods. The brunch is great. Food is super delicious. And they have lots of outdoor seating which has been so nice in this great weather. Only negative thing I have to say is the service. Sometimes very slow and not super observant. Other than that, I'm usually here once a week. Had a soft shell crab Benedict with a crawfish hollandaise that changed my life pretty much. First receipt just shows amount owed. Then when you get the final receipt it shows 20% gratuity included. So unless you're a regular and you know how they're scamming you, you end up paying 35% tip. We dropped in this Central Bushwick for a quick late breakfast because it wasn't too far from the place we booked through AirBNB. We instantly felt at home as we walked up and even moreso with the cozy layout and decor inside. Totally reminded us of places back home in Capitol Hill and Ballard, Seattle as well as SE Portland, so it was a nice way to start off our trip. Portions are small, so be prepared to order multiple items if you've got an appetite. The Angry Hippie was great, I could've easily devoured 2 orders of those creamy eggs and grits. The chili was great too, a deep smoky flavor unlike anything I remember having before. We ordered a couple coffees to go, one of which was really unique, the peanut butter latte. Ordered the catfish po boy, crawfish Mac n cheese, biscuit, and the jambalaya. The Crawfish Mac n cheese was a little spicy but not bad. Nice and cheesy but very few pieces of crawfish. The catfish po boy was also decent but nothing special. The slaw and sauce were good but breading on catfish was too simple. I've only been twice, once for lunch and then for a light dinner/drinks at the bar. But the food was satisfying both times, and the vibe is homely and inviting. At lunch I had the Cajun burger, boyfriend had the chicken sandwich that he swears is his favorite in Bushwick. (I'm not crazy about dark meat chicken, but if it's your thing go for it) For dinner I got a cup of gumbo and the burrata and fried green tomatoes which was SUPERB. Great food aside, the best part about Heavy Woods is the friendly bartenders who don't have that annoying pretentious Brooklyn vibe. We went here last night for dinner for the first time. I have eaten at many places throughout my life. I can tell you that this place has some of the best food I have ever tasted! The service was warm and friendly and made us feel welcomed. The crawfish and Mac and cheese and cheesy crawfish bread was insane-so good! The jambalaya was the best I had. The reason I go here is because the waitstaff are welcoming and service is so good. Food is ok & tasty, although its rich & heavy so I don't eat everytime I go there. Wish they had lighter options. Horrible service. My husband and I were at the bar for a good few hours on 7/31/2019 from 4-630pm. Initially there was a bartender tending to us, but because of the shift change around 5-6 another male bartender took over. My husband was trying to get the attention of the bartender, which he called several times with no response, since we were sitting at a table and not directly at the bar located in the front. After several attempts of trying to get the bartenders attention my husband whistled at him to get his attention, which then the bartender took offensively. He immediately reprimanded my husband and I in front of other patrons and said, "Don't whistle at me, I am not a dog". I was very confused by his reaction, and even more offended that he had to yell it in front of other patrons. My husband was trying to get his attention and had no malice in whistling at him. I do not go into bars to get reprimanded by bartenders. If he was any type of adult he would have came over, and explained to us he didn't appreciate that in a much nicer to way than he did. I understand people get offended at different things, but the way he handled the situation was not professional at all. Then the previous bartender, also another male came up to us and said, "In this culture, we do not whistle at bartenders". I don't know exactly what culture he was talking about, because after being born and raised in New York, I've been to many bars, and have seen many different ways people try to get a bartenders attention because they are always busy and never look up. Thus the whistle got his attention after several failed attempts to get his attention by saying, "Hey" or "Excuse me". After this I felt very bad, and I wanted the previous bartender to tend to us. He had moved to the back bar, so I decided to go back there and ask him if he could serve us since I didn't feel comfortable with the bartender in the front (who had an Australian accent) tend to us. When I asked him he then responded,"No you NEED to order with the bartender in the front." Actually I don't need to do anything but take my business elsewhere. Now if I was the bartender in this situation I would have tried to accommodate the patron. But neither reacted in an appropriate way. At this point it is my right to no longer continue my stay at the restaurant. I asked for my tab, and left $0 tip for the shittiest and racist service I've ever had in my life. For the bartender who didn't like to be whistled at, if you live in New York you'll realize people of many different places live here. Different things are appropriate in different places. You live in a city with many different cultures. It's ridiculous I even have to explain that. Grow up. You'll never make it in New York if that's your attitude. And although the food is great here, if that's the kind of shit and racist service I'll get when I walk into this bar, I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

I popped into this cute little bar yesterday for Sunday brunch with friends. The menu seems small but the food is really tasty. I ordered the fried Catfish Po' Boy and a biscuit on the side and was so pleased! The fish was well seasoned and I loved the pickled veggies on top. The biscuit was served with some some sort of hot sauce jam and OMG...I need it in mouth again STAT! Prices seem fair compared to the quality of the food. At $7 a pop I felt that the mimosas were a bit overpriced. I mean...who can really have just one or two mimosas? I'll be skipping them next time in favor of booze. The Asian server/bartender helping us was a sweetheart but seemed a tad overwhelmed as the place filled up. He's cute though so he gets a pass lol. One of the finest bars in Brooklyn. One of the best lattes I've ever had. It's rare to find a place that's at its best at all hours of operation. You will never once see any member of the exceptional Heavy Woods staff waiting around for prime time to strike and treating you as an afterthought in the meantime. You immediately feel that these people love their community and will slake your thirst to the best of their ability. I'm just a few blocks away and, whether it's for my morning coffee or closing down the bar, I find this place to be a true credit to the neighborhood, though I would travel long distances for the same experience. Brilliantly planned and kept, the only thing the owners have proven incapable of is hiring a single inept or unfriendly bartender. Everyone is phenomenally attentive, skilled and friendly. It's the kind of bar where the bartenders will call out the window to you as you're passing by and welcome you with a kind shout when you stop in. Grumpy Coffee is the house brew and the original cocktail menu is the best I've seen in a while. Excellent music, warm atmosphere and the occasional film choice is always unexpected and enjoyable. The only downside to Heavy Woods is how it prevents me from discovering new bars. See you there tonite! read more

Another solid meal at Heavy Woods. Had the BBQ shrimp. Came with a side of warm baked bread. Great for dipping. Filling (granted it's mostly a fake full because of the bread, but nevertheless). Sauce was flavorful. It was difficult to eat though as the shrimp come head-on and the sauce is sticky so you have to put up with that. Chicken biscuit is always a crowd pleaser. We also both had the Duck-Okra Gumbo. At $6 a bowl it's at the top of the mark as far as price, though was deep brown, hot and flavorful. read more

The food is really heavy. Lots of meat and oil but I keep returning. I love the deviled eggs, but thats the only place I've ever had deviled eggs so I have nothing to compare it to. The po boys and chicken biscuit is good too. So flavorful! The chicken biscuit may look small but don't let it fool you. It is filling. They may want to put less sauce on it because it makes the chicken biscuit get mushy and fall apart, making it really hard to hold . I just ended up eating it with a fork. read more

I came here during the winter for late night drinks. It is a local spot in the area and we decided to try it out. The ambiance is warm and comfortable. We ordered the crispy pork belly cracklin. That was so disappointing. I expected crispy goodness in a basket. Instead we received a basket of chewy pieces of pork that compare to chewing pieces of a rubber band (gross). I ordered a drink that taste like pure bitters. I've had much better in other local bars. The server was really busy and barely had any time to check on us. So we just paid for rubbery pork belly and a glass of bitters. Not sure if I'll go back. I hope it was just an off night. read more

This is my go-to neighborhood bar. I love how you can sit outside- especially for the summer. They have great cocktails and great food. This place stinks. My girlfriend and I go out to eat pretty often, we have been here once before and the service was not all that great then either. When we arrived we waited to be seated but there was no direction as to who the host/hostess was or if we should seat ourselves. We eventually walked over and asked for a table for 2. The food was 2.5/5 seemed more like some bar food dressed as Cajun than an actual authentic Cajun style meal. When it came time to pay, the server told us that their system was down but that they had an ATM we could use which was located in the back. The ATM only allows you to take out 20$ at a time, with a 2 dollar transaction fee each time. When we asked where the nearest ATM was they claimed they didn't know, we ended up finding one at a deli 3 blocks away. This place has potential but it definitely not up to standard right now. Makes me cringe just writing this. I've never written a yelp review, but I was compelled to, after this terrible experience. read more

I cannot say enough nice things about this restaurant! I have always had a pleasant experience with the staff and the food- my goodness!! The food is amazing! If I could live in a vat of their shiitake gravy I would die early but it would be worth it.
