I tried to enjoy this place but I simply couldn't. I was meeting up with a friend and we decided to try Heavy Woods. We were both looking forward to some hearty, flavorful food and good atmosphere. Heavy Woods could have been the place that embraced community via decor and energy but it feels cold and a bit sterile inside, despite the very intentionally kitschy and "modern resto inspired" interior. You should know what I'm talking about, every other restaurant in Bushwick looks similar to Heavy Woods. Unbelievably boring. We sat, my friend ordered a drink and examined the menu, with reservation, while I drank water and tried to figure out what's up with this place. Well, first things - we sat for about an hour talking to see what the dinner crowd would be like. There were no black folks working here when we visited and no black or brown folks walked in. At this point, I'm concerned about the quality of the food and how authentic or seasoned it's going to be. The service was average, not bad but definitely not inviting enough for us to try and stay. I am a big fan of Heavy Woods. I love the staff, appreciate the drinks, and the atmosphere serves its exact purpose. My concern is that the menu seems to be consistently dropping their best menu items. Since I became a regular their was jambalaya, gumbo, and pork crackling and over the last few months all items are no longer on the menu. Please bring it back!!!! Went to this place after a less than impressive experience at the rookery. It was great from the moment we walked in, bomb food in the air, legit bartenders really bartending, and the music was cracking. The homie Sean was our bartender, cool dude. I like to talk to the tenders about different whiskies and mixes just to see what kinda service I'm going to get and this guy was right there each step of the way. Needless to say I was confident I'd be getting a real drink here. Asked him to serve me an old fashioned, you'd be surprised at how many tenders mess this up but Sean made one of the best old fashions I've had since moving to NY. Strong and smooth. The homegirl got some margarita thing she said it was weak then she got cross eyed and I laughed (oh well, I laugh) meanwhile Sean is talking to us about a horchata drink he makes I love horchata and the homegirl who happens to be from the West too also loves them. He knew all about horchata unfortunately the horchata they make there wasn't what it's posta be, I didn't try the liquor infused version tho. Maybe next time. I did order the house version of an old fashioned, using tequila which I haven't drank since a very bad experience in a Denny's bathroom back in 07(ya boy was doing bad) ANYWAY this drink Sean made was bomb I took a pic of it on the menu, it's legit. Tots were perfectly fried and a great side dish to pair with the burger. Plus they had a cider on draft! Friend had the pork po boy and really liked it. As well as the very crispy fries - I personally liked the tots better. Overall a solid bar with decently priced food and drinks. For those still embracing the warmer weather or looking to be extra covid safe - they have tables alongside the bar and some in a patio area in the back. No waiters but easy enough to order from the window to get drinks and a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready. Small edit / note: they automatically charge you a 20% tip. If you're in the mood for some hearty 'hippy' soul food I can tell you this place is pretty ideal. The price range is very affordable and they serve grumpy cold brew from Cafe Grumpy I believe. Their Shit-ake is superb but anything here is deliciously homemade. Loved Their biscuits the most! It had the perfect balance with a hint of cornbread like taste (which I was a fan of). The only negative thing I would say is: One star off due to non-smiling employees. Get your picnic tables off our sidewalk. I've lived in this neighborhood for many years. This past weekend I was sitting at the picnic tables and a woman came out and asked me and some other families who were sitting at the picnic tables to leave. I completely understand, but her attitude was everything. I asked for a minute or two to get my things together. She stood around and harassed me with attitude. There's not a lot of outdoor space available in this city. So if you put permanent picnic tables on a public sidewalk, you have to expect some general use. Trash. Bartender has a problem with everyone and made an issue with every request. Asked us to not order food and drink at the same time, then was upset we asked for separate tabs and said we could split it in the end. Then when we closed out, did not acknowledge our request and proceeded to be rude. Clicked "print receipt" and was waiting for a minute, and when he came back told me it was my fault that I should have told him I needed a receipt. Came here a while ago with a friend and the food wasn't half bad for Cajun food in Brooklyn. I can't recommend it too highly because the prices were a bit steep for what you're really getting, but if you share the small plates with a friend, then that helps a lot. I was so confused when I found this place on Yelp. I saw two listings (this and Tchoup Soup) with the same address and both had very similar menus with the exception of 1 or 2 dishes. I finally pieced the puzzle together and realized Tchoup Soup is the Creole food featured at the Heavy Woods bar. Why two yelp accounts though? You get free gumbo with check-in at Tchoup Soup but not Heavy Woods. Weird. Nonetheless, we headed over to Heavy Woods for dinner the other night and I was incredibly disappointed. I walked in and stood at the entrance for a solid 2 minutes, which is a long time when you're just standing there. No one acknowledged me. There was no waitress or waiter in sight and only 1 bartender manning the bar. I go up to the bartender and she tells me to sit wherever. I head to the back where it says "Lounge" to get away from the noise. There was a couple already seated back there so I was glad to know we wouldn't be ignored. I sat for another 5 minutes while I wait for my boyfriend to arrive then I see a girl walk by so I ask her for 2 menus. She brings them over, then while I'm using the restroom (which is gritty and filthy) she takes away one menu. Maybe she needed it but when my boyfriend arrived she never gave us another. It's a short menu anyway, so ended up deciding on cracklin's to start and the chicken biscuit and pork po' boy for our main. I tried the Kiwi Green cocktail which was a decent summery drink. I'm going to side track here and say we just got back from NOLA the day before so we were riding off the vacation high and was craving more creole food. Cracklin: Crazy small serving, but who should have too much of this anyway, right? My main issue with this dish was how greasy the pork belly was. It was like they let it sit in the fryer for 2 minutes too long. Every bite you took grease would pour into your mouth. It was soo unappetizing. I had to damp it into a napkin before taking another bite. Chicken Biscuit: While the chicken had good flavor, this just didn't do it for me. The biscuit to chicken ratio was off, with almost no biscuit. The dish was too simple, it came with nothing, not even garnish. There were 3 highlighted ingredients, chicken, biscuit, jam, which just left a lot to be desired. Pork Po' Boy: So dry it's crazy. Granted I asked for no mayo, but the slaw and the pork should've been the juicy ingredients. The sandwich had an overwhelming amount of bread which made it even drier (opposite to the chicken biscuit). If they had added more slaw and maybe had juicer pork this wouldn't have been too bad. Service was blah, our waitress was mainly out front and barely checked on us. I really wanted to like this place since it has good reviews but it seems like the chef just handed over the menu to inexperienced line cooks and let them butcher it up. I came here on a Sunday early afternoon for brunch with my boyfriend who is from Louisiana (cajun country). I had gone this past November and fell in love with boudin. And being asian helps with loving pork cracklins. Heavy Woods came recommended by you fellow Yelpers! Let's start with the food. We ordered boudin balls, cracklins, and deviled eggs for appetizers. Boudin balls are basically the balled up fried insides of a boudin sausage (mixture of rice, seasoning, spices, and some kind of meat). For someone craving boudin, I was very happy about these boudin balls. They tasted just like boudin-the-sausage, but without the casing and with a much crispier shell. YUM! The cracklins were perfectly done. They were seasoned with some sea salt, served hot. Thumbs up! The deviled eggs were covered in paprika and very spicy. I enjoyed them but they didn't really blow my mind. Then again, deviled eggs don't really blow my mind in general, so that was to be expected. For our entree, I ordered the Holy Shiitake and my boyfriend had the The Red Eyed Bandit. The Holy Shiitake was basically cheese grits with eggs and bacon covered in a mushroom gravy sauce. The bacon was thick and juicy, but I could only eat one because of the pork cracklins I had been shoveling into my mouth earlier. Grits were different (sweet), but still very tasty. The mushroom gravy was my favorite part, it definitely brought back memories of Texas for me. The Red Eyed Bandit had tassou meat in it. It was well cooked and the biscuits were soft, warm, and moist. The eggs were done well and loaded with spices. This too was covered in gravy. Absolutely delicious! The only reason I'm not giving this place a 5 star is because of the service. It took forever to get our drinks. And even though we placed our food order with our drink order, the food still took a very long time to come out. The place is not that big and there were 2 servers. I have no idea why i service was so slow. This place is definitely worth the trip out to Bushwick. Go on a lazy day when you don't have any plans afterwards! read more

Straight to the point, we walked in was greeted and seated right away. The food is really delicious, and the drink menu is very solid (I've gotten had nights of the beer-and-shot combos, and tried a bunch of their cocktails. Both are great.) There's tons of space -- I had a birthday party in the back room once! There's also a patio in the back which is great in the summer. We visited Heavy Woods for brunch and it coincidentally was during the US game of the FIFA Women's World Cup so it was a full house literally a minute after opening. Even with the large crowd the servers were quick and super friendly, the food came out really fast too! Heavy Woods has a great charm to it, a ton of character in the lamp fixtures, pool tables, and vintage arcade games. We ordered the pork crackling, the holy shittake, and deviled eggs. Everything was incredible! The pork crackling is delicious, deep fried crispy pork belly with a spicy cayenne kick. Great spot for after work drinks and conversation. Came here for a late night date. My date opted for this place because he said they make good drinks and Cajun food. We ordered drinks and food from the kind bartender and then decided to head outside and dine under the awning. Inside was bustling however, with after-work 20 to 30-somethings raving about the game on tv. Outside was a bit calmer and with the light stream of rain pouring, it was actually pretty nice to relax and dine out there. Food came out in a decent amount of time. I ordered a small Jambalaya with a side of deviled eggs. Can't remember what my date had aside from the bread pudding dessert (sorry), but whatever it was he loved it. The jambalaya was good but it could've used a bit more moisture; I prefer my jambalaya saucy. I absolutely did NOT like the deviled eggs. They weren't nasty but definitely not the tastiest I've had. My friend and I went on a Monday after work for dinner and it was pretty busy but we were able to get a table. We tried the French 75 and another cocktail which were both great. Found the service kinda slack...had to asked to be seated, had to wait a while before getting utencils after getting our food, they were unsure if they could make certain drinks.. the food made it better! So me & my boyfriend just came here to have brunch to continue celebrating his bday. We were staying in the area & I decided to yelp a breakfast spot nearby I showed him the pics he said it looks good so we decided to go. We were the first customers they were just opening up.  Anyways we put drinks orders & food orders in. The food portion was rather small even for me keep in mind my boyfriend is 6'7 & can eat his fair share so when the food came he said where is the rest & he disliked his entire meal mines was just okay nothing mind blowing . We ended up ordering seconds cause our main course wasn't filling enough & being it's brunch we assumed mismoas were unlimited like most brunches. When we asked the waiter he stated mismoas were not unlimited. So we were ready to go when my boyfriend received the bill of $112 he was pissed. As trying to understand what exactly did we get for such an amount like I said food portion was small & mediocre at best. Ordered delivery through GrubHub, I got the veggie burger with fries and fried pickles and my boyfriend got the jambalaya and a margarita. The veggie burger was dope! Black bean patty that actually held together, and the fried oyster mushrooms were crisp and tasty. Fries were well seasoned, fried pickles were delightful, overall really flavorful and filling meal. Often places that aren't ~vegan 100% cruelty free~ themed tend to half-ass their vegetarian options, but that was definitely not the case here. Came here for my birthday and really enjoyed it. I had the blackened chicken sandwich, my wife had the chicken biscuit and we shared mashed potatoes. All of the food was amazing. My sandwich with the banh mi slaw was nicely balanced and the bread held up to the contents. My wife really enjoyed the chicken biscuit as well. The mashed with the sausage gravy was hearty but not heavy. Lots of flavor in both the gravy and the potatoes. For dessert I had the bread pudding and it was delicious. Greta way to finish the meal. Like rum and water with a dash of almond milk and only the slightest hint of spice. Was super disappointed. My husband just had a plain nonalcoholic horchata, so tasted that as well- therein lies the problem....it's the most tasteless horchata I've ever had. Seems a shame as they big up how it is 'house made.' Didn't drink my cocktail, was too unpleasant.
