Ick! I don't know if the employees had Yelped this place or what. I didn't enjoy this joint at all. And dirty!!!! Everyone in our party agreed that their food was under seasoned and bland. Gross looking peas in my burrito??? Like the color of canned peas. Too bad this was my first Texas Mexican food experience. If this is, what is to come, I'll take Colorado Mexican food over Texas anytime. Dried salsa all over our bland chips basket, my margarita glass at one time had some kind of label on it and they didn't bother to take the sticky glue off the cup. Daughter and husband were served weak tasting lemonade. An employee had their small children sitting at a table and they were loud and screaming. Bathrooms were dirty and floors felt sticky. Waitress was super nice though. The only redeeming quality of this place. It'd be preferable to get nachos at a gas station for lunch. read more

Service sometimes a little slow, but to support what seem like good people, with tremendous kitchen skills, that survived the pandemic - easy trade off. Not your typical Austin Mex, more like what you'd expect to find in the Mexican interior, or at a place in SoCal where most of the patrons are not gringos. Love it. A noisy place; two electric guitarists were playing standards in a room too small for the volume they were cranking out. Those I was dining with had to shout to each other. I mentioned this to the manager, who said he'd ask the musicians to tone it down a bit, but that didn't happen. Didn't see the manager after that either. I thought this was mediocre Mexican food at best. The sauces and flavors were bland and needed a tremendous amount of salt. With all the great reviews I was excited to try Hecho En Mexico and plus it's near my house. We got chills relleno, enchiladas, and an appetizer of beef nachos. Everything from the salsa to the mains needed a lot of salt. The freshness was good but the tastes weren't bold or exciting at all. I did like that the chili rellenos weren't battered and were more like a baked stuffed pepper - but if you were wanting a more traditional chili relleno you'd be upset at their take on it. I also didn't care for the stuffing - it was ground beef with peas and carrots in a bland tomato sauce. Nothing was inedible but it wasn't good either. I probably won't go back. read more

Initial service was a bit slow considering there were not a lot of people there, but the live music filled the wait. I'd also get the upgraded queso, as the standard one was not the best. This one is a tough rating because the balance of good and not so great was pretty much even. I do t like saying negative things about businesses because I recognize that ratings can do harm. I'm going to be honest though and while thiscrestaurant was not terrible , it's on my "do not revisit" - here's why. Salsa-Cold tomato and something slurry and red and called salsa- unappetizing for me. My hubby thought it was ok. Peach margarita - is a regular margarita with some peach syrup or schnapps thrown in. Not even stirred or salted, as I'd asked for . Underwhelmed at his point . The quesadilla appetizers were goodish.... not the best but good The pork tacos my husband ordered was great and so was the beef fajita platter my son and I shared . The charro beans were FANTASTIC and the refried beans were good but a little bland. The rice was great and so were the flour tortillas. The blue corn tortillas just broke and wouldn't hold their shape .... not great when you're eating fajitas. I thought the tres leches dessert would compensate for the bland flavors . After all, it's soaked cake right ? This was a dry cake straight out of the fridge with some whipped cream and a strawberry on top. This was almost unforgivable but the folk are nice. Great servers , friendly vibe and a good mariachi band. Actually, make that a great mariachi band. This place should be renamed El Gringo Mexicano because I think it caters to a large Caucasian clientele that this kind of watered down food may appeal to. Most of the customers are very young or very old . For someone like me, who is used to the bold , robust , flavors of Mexican food found in Houston, this was meh . This is a very busy place with a nice vibe so visit if this kind of food appeals to your palate - this one rated a 2 or a 3 on the flavor scale ( even with the good fajitas ). Top notch traditional Mexican food. Had lunch here for the first time in quite some time with a friend recently. Can't imagine why I hadn't been back because this place is really a gem. This isn't traditional Tex-Mex (which I love too). It's more interior Mexico cuisine. I had a lunch of chicken enchiladas. I asked and was pleased to find out that they were all white meat. Everything about the meal was just great. The enchiladas were perfect. The chicken was moist and tender. The sides of charro beans and rice were marvelous too. Mixed feelings. Food was good. Happy hour margaritas not good. Spend the extra money on better drinks. Waitress asked us if we wanted extra chips and salsa and then never brought them. Enchiladas Suizas were a little dry so asked for extra sour cream. Had to remind the waitress. We were charged $3 for a tablespoon of sour cream! Finally, an excellent restaurant in South Austin offering something unique. Ok, so the atmosphere is very simple and could use some "punch", but you'll gladly overlook this once the food arrives. I frequently judge Mexican restaurants by the quality of their Mole, and Hecho en Mexico passed with flying colors. My picky eater son scarfed down everything on his plate, and LOVED the flan so much he nearly didn't share a single bite! Our waitress was extremely friendly and was kind enough to bring me a small sample of the Tortilla Soup. It is was simply to die for! If you think tortilla soup is basically chicken broth, think again. Their soup is thick and rich, made with dried chili's. Simply awesome. Tucked away in a small strip center close to the corner of William Cannon and Escarpment makes this place a little hard to find, but I really hope that it gets "discovered" and stays around for a long time. I know I'll be back, again and again. BTW: They are expecting their liquor license by about Feb 1, but don't let this stop you from visiting before then! read more

Hecho en Mexico is more of a Mexican rather than a TexMex restaurant. It is located in a strip mall development (what in Austin isn't). The ambiance is modest. The menu is rather elaborate which always makes me a little wary especially in a smallish establishment. There was a happy hour special on Margaritas so everyone in our group of four had one. They were fine but generic. The chips were very good but the salsa could have used a bit more punch (Minnesota style salsa without any heat). I had the chile relleno stuffed with ground hamburger. It was ok but could have definitely benefited from more spiciness. It was served with the ubiquitous beans and rice. Everything Wes very edible but was a bit hohum. Service was a little awkward. Hecho en Mexico is not a place I would make a special trip for but the food was okay. read more

I really wanted this place to be as good as i had heard about but basically all our items were dry, even the banana leaf steamed pork. Also, they dont give you really any enchilada sauce or salsa etc - so that cant make up for the dry meats either, we had to dig deep into our fridge for some sauces to make it edible. read more

Overpriced for what you get. Caldo tlalpeno was over seasoned and the "bowl" was pretty small. No cheese either. The mole mancha manteles for the price you'd think you'd get some real chicken like a leg or thigh instead of the flat chicken that looked like it came from the frozen section at Costco. Called after I placed my order upset because I got no tortillas no napkins and no utensils and whoever answered the phone was rude and said we have to ask for all those things and just said that's how it is. We tried this place based on the reviews and it was just way different than expected. Maybe it's on us because we're not used to this type of cuisine. The sales was in really small flat bowls and was closer to Italian tomato sauce than salsa, and the food was just ok as well with very limited selection. This is a small place. There are 16 tables inside and a few outside. That small size lends it a neighborhood feel. I almost don't want to review because I don't want it to get busier and therefore harder to get a table. ;) The food is great and the service is fantastic also. read more

So good. Authenticity is off the charts. Service is super quick and friendly. Yo, they even have a mariachi/live musicians playing during the dinner service. How in the world does this place get anything above a 2 star rating??!! I'll start with the positive . The service was good. The place was small but cute for being in a strip mall. The selections on the menu SOUNDED good. They served 3 enchiladas per order. I cannot eat 3 at one time but I sure do like to take good leftover enchiladas home. Now for the most important....the food. YUK!!! The salsa was the worst I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. It tasted sour and had no spice. I had chicken enchiladas with verde sauce which comes with the standard beans (I chose black) and Mexican rice. The sauce was so thin, it ran right off the enchiladas. It was so watery that it was almost clear with hints of green. And the taste. What taste. It has no taste whatsoever. Then there was the chicken. It looked like pretty shredded white meat chicken. But looks is where it stopped. It was so dry. It was so bland. It was so disappointing! Then there was the rice. It was no more than a couple of tablespoons. OK, no big deal I have 3 enchiladas to eat. But no. Again, absolutely zero flavor. Now for the worst part. The black beans. They were disgusting! They were bitter and had a very weird flavor. I tried mixing them in with the rice but that didn't help since the rice had no flavor. I tried adding salsa but that didn't help because it was no good to start with. After 3 or so bites I realized that they were probably spoiled. And if they were not spoiled something else was definitely wrong with them. I asked others at the table to taste them because I was the only that got the black beans and all agreed that they were just plain gross and probably spoiled. In fact, no one liked their meal and none of us will ever return to this place. Frequently, I will give a place a second chance before deciding not to return and writing a review but this was just one of the worst Mexican restaurant experiences I have ever had! I only gave 2 stars because the service was good. If you know anything about Mexican food and like Mexican food, you have been warned. read more

I went expecting authentic mexican food and got taco bell-esque mockery of the mexican culture, it was very dry and bland and I even found a HAIR IN MY EMPANADA. Holy Mole! And I mean that literally. I ordered the Platon de Enchiladas de Mole. I'm normally not a big fan of mole but my friend insisted that I give it a go. It's simple. 3 enchiladas and 3 mole sauces. From left to right, first there is a chicken enchilada covered with their traditional mole sauce garnishes with pickles red onion. Red, earthy with a little hint of sweetness, it was dang good! The middle was a shrimp enchilada, so sweet and tender. Covering it was a white mole that reminded me of crushed almonds and light creamy goodness and was topped with a sprinkle of black sesame seeds On the right side of the plate was the heavier shredded pork enchilada covered with a dark red spicier mole with a slight kick of heat. The topping of sweet plantain and pineapple was a tasty contrast to the sauce. Overall, it was a generous portion and took half of it home. My view of mole has been blown wide open now. My tastebuds were so happy and so was my tummy. We enjoyed their house margaritas and their chips, salsa and fresh guacamole. I think we have found our neighborhood fave. Btw, if Fernando is your waiter, you have lucked out though from what I could see, staff was friendly and happy to see everyone. Just go! read more
