Have passed by through this place many times and wanted to try it out so stopped by. Really wanted to like this place but it seems it lacks a lot of things. First we ordered water with no ice, server stills brings with ice and later says will replace it but forgets entire time. Second their sala is like one straight from Costco which is a major negative for me at any Mexican place. For food we ordered Buenos do coliflor which is basically fried cauliflower and it was very bland. We asked for some more drizzle of sauce for which they charged us $3 more which is insane and after that too they brought it with wrong sauce. I would say don't waste your money on this one. Veggie Enchiladas were okay too. Had better before. Only good things was soap arzana which was more spicy than usual but we liked it. I would pass on this one. read more

Meh. Had poor service and mediocre food. Went at an odd hour, so it wasn't busy at all but after waiting patiently for at least 15 minutes, we had to flag down our server to order, she never refilled our drinks or checked on us the entire meal and we to flag her down again to ask for the check. The queso was a little pricey for being basic plain queso. The verde Enchiladas were good but the rice was a little crunchy. The salsa was decent. Didn't love it enough to go again. read more

Food: I can say that today I tried the BEST soup ive ever had in my life "crema poplanio". It came with our order of tacos. I also ordered sizzling shrimp fijittas, it came with rice, pico, their special sour cream, and tortillas. And i asked for avocado slices on the side. Their guacamole wasnt my absolute favorite tho, but the salsa was Fiah. We had the mango and the raspberry margarita and they were both great. Service: fantastic people working here, we were sat very quickly. They brought the chips n salsa and our drinks immediatly. It was a wonderful customer service experience. Atmosphere: lovely authentic feel to it. There it both indoor and outdoor seating, and you cant go wrong in outdoors at October in Austin. We got Ubered in but i noticed plenty of parking spaces in the plaza and the place wasnt really the packed at 1pm on a Saturday. Unfortunately, we got sat really close to the bathroom which kind of blocked the hallway when our server is taking/brining our food. We found this restaurant during Covid, went often, wanted to help the small businesses stay open. I took a friend who had never been here. We both ordered a top shelf Mexican martini. Waiter asked if we had a specific tequilla, we just said no, but 100 % blue agave would be great. We ordered appetizers, which were good. When our check came, we were charged the twelve dollars for a top shelf, which is fine, but we were each charged an extra 8 dollars for a special tequilla. One drink was twenty dollars! Also, they charge a credit card convenience fee, even though we both used debit cards! They should just raise their prices a little, no convenience fee. Busy night we got one of the last available tables but were greeted by server pretty quickly. Server was super friendly. Ambiance was a little loud because it was busy and there was some live music for a small space. I ordered a Sangria and I loved it, sweet and fruity. We ordered the queso flameado with chorizo and it was really good. The chorizo definitely had good flavor! This was probably my favorite part of the meal. The table got chips and salsa and salsa was ok. Ordered the bite size tacos Al Pastor and these were not traditional Al Pastor, didn't even have pineapple, just meat and cilantro. read more

Taste of Mexico Trying to fill in a gap for my Mexican restaurant rotation I wanted to return to Hecho En Mexico. It has been a while since I have eaten here and perhaps too long. So for lunch I walked in to see plenty of seating. A server came by to give us menus and take our drink orders. I had to ask for a drink menu. The regular menu had lots of interesting choices and had a separate lunch list. The lunch menu was good enough for me and ordered beef enchiladas and black beans. I studied the drink menu and noticed they have not margarita machine so everything was on the rocks. The also have an interesting flavor of margaritas which included guava, strawberry, watermelon, mango, raspberry, and peach. I decided on getting a Modelo Especial beer which was given a can and a chilled beer glass. We were provided with with chips and salsa, and my wife ordered queso to dip the chips in. The chips were very tasty and enjoyed the salsa. It was not too spicy. The cheese was not bad either. Next our food arrived and it looked great. Very hot plates and gave one taste of the enchiladas, and it was excellent. The style here is not Tex mex but more traditional Mexican. This place is also a bit upper scale where they have higher end tequilas here and dinner choices. This is towards a place to take you special one for a nice dinner out The food was very good and see why everyone in my neighborhood loves this place. This review is only based on their happy hour drinks. We ordered a margarita on the rocks and another one frozen. Both tasted really fresh, which I appreciate because some places have awful marg mixed. They were a decent size for only $6 each. We also got a Tecate for $3. Wells are $5. Their chips and salsa come free with any purchase. We'll definitely be back! Looking forward to trying their food sometime. read more

It is hard to write this as I read so many other good reviews, but felt that as a local in the neighborhood, I have to say this recent visit was a disappointment. The chips and salsa were fine. The salsa was more tomato, with a mild heat, but not chuncky . The chips were thick, strong enough to dip with confidence. We started with Homemade Guacamole, which was good but there was so little, I was expecting more especially at $6.50. Looked as if one large avacado was used to make the dish. see the picture I provided. We order the Beef Tacos, Chicken Enchiladas and my son and I shared the Molcajete for two. The Beef tacos: bland. The beef was cooked with peas and other items, but still, no taste. The rest of the taco fixings definitely helped to add flavor. We will pass on that dish next time. Plenty of Rice and Beans. The Chicken Verde Enchiladas were good. Our friend finished her whole dish, a definite thumbs up. My son and I split the Molcajete, which consisted of beef flank, chorizo, grilled onions, fesco cheese, grilled serranos and pico. Plenty of Rice and Beans on the side. This was a major disappointment. The flank steak was blah. No flavor and was tough. On to the Chorizo, it was good, enough spice, and looked to be cooked in a pan. For $30... Well that's what you should expect. I am glad they had plenty of grilled serranos and onions to go with the plate. With just water, and the items I talked about, the final bill came to $60 and change. The service was fine, decent number of seats and it is not loud. The only hang up was the time between ordering and receiving the food. There seems to be plenty of local patrons for the place which is great. I am sad that we will not be part of that crowd.. I love interior Mexican Foods... Maybe next time I will try other menu items and make an update... read more

My job is in the same business plaza. I ordered a couple of tacos with rice and beans for pick up. I walk over in 10 min when they said it would be ready, get back to my desk and the meal was about room temperature warm, not hot. They didn't put any napkins or plastic wear. 100% fresh and delicious authentic Mexican food! I had the pleasure to dine for the first time last night. Went on a Thursday at 5:45 and it was busy but no wait. Was blown away by the quality of ingredients in every dish. Started out with the sopa del dia which was a creamy poblano. You could taste how fresh the roasted peppers were (yum). The ensalada was refreshing and homemade lime dressing was awesome. My boyfriend had the chicken fajitas - enough for 6 fajitas! Top shelf skinny marg as well as frozen marg were super tasty (no premade mixes!) Eduardo was an attentive server and the owner was super friendly as well. It's lovely that a good restaurant has opened where the old Giss's restaurant used to be. Never could get myself to eat in a restaurant that was named after something left on the floor of a 70's porn flick. Anyhow.... Been by three times now.. first for appetizers, then for dinner with the boss on Monday and we just had to go back tonight. This is good stuff. Salsa is different than everything I have tasted before. What makes it unique is the chile's they use. If I remember correctly.. sorry I enjoyed three of their watermelon special rita's tonight...Arbor chile is the base and a sweeter chile whose name just escaped me was added. We noshed through a bowl and half. Chips were thicker than most I have had with a great corn taste to them.....Happy Happy Joy Joy dance. Items we have had and my thoughts: Par de Huaraches: Cactus.. first time I have had this, and it was yummy with a scoop of their Salsa on it. Ceviche: Was not as good as I expected, and seemed really over limed if that is possible. Might of been made the day before and steeped to long. I'm willing to give it another shot. Taquitos al Pastor: Greasy, flavorful, and five to an order, which is plenty to share. Pescado a la Veracruzana: Excellent fresh fish with crisp veggies in the Veracruzana sauce, served on a banana leaf. Classy, fresh and lite. Pollo en Mole Blanco with Chicken: Mole was tasty with a deep rustic flavor and the Chicken Breast was cooked to perfection. Enchiladas de Espinacas: Awesome in flavor with sauteed mushrooms, garlic and almonds. It is quite rich with flavors and possibly some of the best I have ever had. A dish which wasn't even on the menu since my boss wanted something very hot and spicy with meat. What arrived was sorta like a pork and beef stew with many different chile's in it.. it was HOT, and yet surprising tasty. The chiles all worked well as one. It was a really grand gesture by the owner to even put this together. Desserts we have had: Nieve de Mole: Holy Crack... Ice Cream with the Mole sauce.. so refreshing and an interesting combination of flavors Crepas de Limon con Salsa de Zarzamora: The creamy lemon sauce on the crepes was full of zest.. crepes were a little thick, but still soft and tender to the bite Pestel de tres leches con Changos Zamoranos: Dear God.. this is what milk was made for.. Thank goodness for cows..creamy, sweet delicious sauce, crumbling cake to soak it all up.. I have to get the recipe for the tres leches. Look, this is a local, small restaurant, trying to do well in a tough economy. It is a stumble, drop and crawl from my casa. We will continue to patronize it and enjoy the great, caring service. Watching them make little mistakes as they grow into a wonderful experience. So, get off your couch, take off the snuggie which you are filling with farts, and check it out. read more

I'm rarely jealous of Austin, but - hot damn - I wish Houston had a Hecho En Mexico! I was brought in by an amigo, and he didn't warn me how much I'd fall head over mutha effin' heels with this restaurant. I thought it was just another Austin-o-fide, gringo Tex-Mex joint. But when I saw the number of Yelp reviews, the average star rating, the pictures - THE MENU - I realized it's an authentic MEXICAN restaurant with authentic MEXICAN food. We ain't talking chimichangas and deep-fried whatcha-ma-call-its smothered in yellow cheese. The menu consists of real street tacos, seafood, caldos, and desserts. When I saw huitlacoche on the menu - which is corn smutt, a delicacy in Mexico City - bunuelos, mole, mole ice cream. I was like ...Stttaaaaahhhhp. I want it all. We started with ceviche followed by pork tacos and a huitlacoche-stuffed poblano pepper. And the poblano wasn't fried. It was grilled. Perfecto! Service was fantastic. There was even a two piece band. Drinks were good - though not as great as the top-shelf marg I experienced at down the way at Flores Mexican Restaurant. But still far better than most places.
