Obviously family Run and popular with locals. The location itself is non-descript but the vibe is very good once you get inside. I drove 15 minutes out of my way for the chilli relleno for no reason other than I love them. It was worth the trip!! The poblano pepper was perfectly cooked and not a trace of skin was detected. The cheese stuffing had its own distinct flavor with perfectly accompanied the poblano, and the sauce. The sauce was very flavorful and there was lots of it. I chose the black beans which were cooked well. The rice also had its own unique flavor which threw me off at first. Later I was looking for more. read more

The ingredients were good quality. I ordered off the lunch menu and got the relleno. It had obviously been pre-cooked and kept in a warmer. It was on the table maybe 5 minutes after ordering and didn't taste fresh out of the oven. The relleno wasn't breaded or fried, and was a bit soggy with dry chunks of under-spiced chicken. Everything in general, including the salsa, needed a lot more seasoning (especially salt). Nothing was really very warm. It wasn't a bad lunch, but wasn't super great- just okay. read more

I'll give this place a 4 only because of the wait time.... It was really long. We were told 25 minutes and waited about 1.5 hours. Other than that the food was awesome. We got the mole enchilada trio.. Wow!!! We also got the cochanita pabil (sorry for the bad spelling). The regular queso was runny and pretty plain, but we opted for that instead of the white one bc we had the kiddos w us. The house margarita on the rocks was something I would go back for!!! Ay Yi Yi! I have been traveling into Mexico for about 30 years and this is one of the most authentic Mexican food restaurants in Austin! (Fonda San Miguel is the other big one.) I normally come for breakfast and order Huevos Montulenos, but this evening I just said WTH, I'm dropping in Hecho to see how they are doing on a Monday evening. First, a Herradura silver Marg on the rocks with salt ... (and then another) and walking on the wild side Diabla Enchiladas con Pollo. Okay, so I love Chile's, I grow them, I eat them in everything, and I also make a 10 chili turkey chili when it's cold outside, but tonight an authentic Diabla sauce. Ay Chihuahua! My head is exploding! Sweat on the front and back; it's embarrassing! This is the second time in my life that I exploded over Chile's. Normally, I go with the tomatillo sauce, it is very flavorful or even the Chomulco sauce is flavorful and Spicey. But, unless you want to really suffer, avoid the Salsa Diabla (devil sauce). read more

Absolute favorite Mexican place in Austin. Why? Because it is hidden, intimate and authentic. Their menu is always on-point and it's more Mex than Tex. The waitstaff is so awesome and occasionally you can catch live music. It's tucked into a residential suburb off William Cannon Dr. and isn't what you expect! We have been here so many times, it's ridiculous (yet awesome). I loveeeed the chicken flautas and the chicken tortilla soup is amazing. The chicken in both cases, is soft, melt in your mouth and seasoned to perfection. Their stuffed poblanos are great if you're looking for a kick! The drinks are standard, but in no way am I downplaying that either, because you get the bang for your buck at this place. We've never had a bad experience here. The food is always piping hot and delicious. We love the specials and are always ready to try them. I seriously can't find a bad dish. We love the unique blends of spices they use and we love to bring family by to try it out. One thing that needs to be done though is that they need to dust the ceiling lights. I noticed dust bunnies forming on the lights and got grossed out thinking that it doesn't take much for them to fall into people or into their food. The artwork also needs to be dusted. Everything seems to be forgotten or just look that way though it's very colorful inside and the waiters are amazing. They're always filling your glass and asking if there's anything you'd like. Get a margarita here. Seriously. They use only lime juice, tequila and orange liqueur.. no nasty sugary mix. Yum. And only $5! And then order the Enchiladas de Espinacas (Sautéed fresh spinach & roasted almonds enchiladas with tomatillo sauce & Queso Monterrey Jack). These enchiladas were awesome! The filling was fresh tasting and healthy without being bland. And the tomatillo sauce was spicy! At $12.50 it's true that they're more expensive than many enchiladas that I've had in the past, but the price seemed reasonable given the freshness of the ingredients. read more

This place is good. No doubt about that! I would not hesitate to come again, and will be, with a plan of trying the breakfast and afternoon food. This is not a Tex-Mex place, but seems to have influences much farther south. The breakfast I had was quite tasty, but bland for my taste. I would order it again, but instead of dousing it with their house hot sauce (which is quite mild), I would probably bring my own. The service was absolutely perfect. I did not have any of the alcohol drinks, but my wandering eye across the bar showed some really nice tequilas. I imagine that the rating will probably increase as I dive deeper and deeper into the selections now available. It is very convenient to my house. I only noticed other Anglos eating there, but I need to eat there at different times to see if those with other backgrounds also find the food of interest. I have been here a couple times with coworkers and tried different things every time. The food is lackluster in flavor. It's a quiet spot. I like that. The staff are friendly but if you are in a rush, don't expect them to be. The best part was the beverage selection. I had some drinks that I wouldn't otherwise find at most other establishments. I had the seafood enchiladas and it was basically sauce and onions with the scent of seafood mixed in. I am going to be super critical of this place because it promised so much. My meal was actually ok and I might go back, but I hate a broken promise. I am a Mexican food snob. Total snob. Not crazy about Tex Mex, unless it is really good quality and uses fresh ingredients. The menu of this place tantalizes you into thinking you will be eating an actual high quality Mexican (from Mexico) meal. The menu is pretty much perfect with regional Mexican specialties and standbys. The execution? So so disappointing. Started out with the mariscada. A mariscada is supposed to be a beautiful dish, with seafood/shellfish laid out with beauty and deliciousness. I noted that the menus said only shrimp, fish and calamari - no shellfish, odd. What I got was a plate of teeny tiny shrimp, the kind they sell as "shrimpmeat" in the stores or by the fish store in blocks as food for bigger fish for your fishtank. They were not cleaned and had the black lines running through them. (gross). There were maybe 3 tiny calamari rings. There was no fish. The taste of the sauce was good however. Use google image for "Mariscada". You will see the problem here, because what you get at Hecho in Mexico does not look anything like the Mariscadas I have had. I ordered the chile en nogada. I have had this dish several times in Puebla, Mexico and was interested to see if they could pull it off. No, they could not. The chile was nicely prepared, which is not easy, but it was filled, not with a picadillo, but with a dry tasteless shredded pork with a stray raisin. Not good. The sauce is supposed to be made of pulverized walnuts, cream and cream cheese and a hint of cherry brandy. This was a weird cinnamon cream sauce - with on overwhelming taste of cinnamon. The cinnamon belonged in the picadillo, not the sauce. Yes, it is supposed to be served lukewarm, even coldish, but not hot. My husband got the mancha manteles. It was the best of the three things we ordered, but I thought the flavors were pretty simple and light. Mancha Manteles (aka tablecloth stainer) is supposed to be a rich sauce with a lot of your dried chilies adding heat along with your plantanos and pineapple. This did not have the deeper color of a mancha manteles that would actually stain your table cloth. It was centered more on the fruity and it was -- yellow? Table salsa is horrible watery and bland. When I asked for something more picante, they disappeared for about twenty minutes. I had to keep asking. Then what they brought out was, I am pretty sure, the same salsa with a chipotle chile blended into it. Nope. They like chipotles here. I am sick to death of chipotles. Used to love them, in moderation and in the proper dishes. Now everyone thinks that you can stick a chipotle into anything and gringos will think you've done something magical. Keep the menu, fire the chef. Oh - the live music was very good when I was there. read more

This cozy, tucked away restaurant turned out to be delightful. Hadn't heard of it but reviews looked promising. A few dishes are recognizably TexMex but most are more actual food from interior Mexico (so healthier). The staff was excellent at explaining the dishes and making recommendations based on our tastes. A bit more expensive than typical Mexican food but the value for quality food, ambiance and service was worth it. The owner was there as well and greeting patrons at the door and assisting the staff. So if you like supporting small business owners, that's another great reason to give Hecho en Mexico a try! read more

Well, my daughter and I decided to try out a new place not too far from home. I have driven passed Hecho En Mexico many times but have never stopped. The place isn't too big,but has a nice friendly vibe to it. We were greeted by a young boy probably about 12 years old who sat us at our table. This is the sign of a family owned place.... (you put in your time working during the summer). The decor was easy on the eyes nothing too loud or blinding. There was a mixture of people, couple, families, people dining alone. We were greeted by our waitress Monica and we informed her it was our first time here and she said "well good thing I've been here before and I can tell you all about it" LOL She promptly brought us chips and salsa. The salsa was a red salsa but had no kick to it at all. Right away my daughter said this salsa is not spicy. Then she looks around and says well it's probably cause most people who come here can't handle salsa that is too spicy ;-) Ha ha. Today we decided to give it a try for dinner. We had the Taquitos al Pastor as a Botana which means appetizer for those of you not family with the word :) The tacquitos were 5 bit size tacos filled with delicious tender falvorful pastor. They serve with cilantro, onions and pineapple if you like. They also give you a small little cup of warm green salsa. The salsa is tasty but NOT spicy at all. My daughter and I tend to enjoy our salsas with more kick to them, but this one was good and mixed well with the flavors of the pastor. Our waitress suggested we try the Platon de Enchiladas which was a plate of enchiladas with different Mole sauces on them. We ordered as she suggested to us. We had one Enchilada filled with beef and topped with Mole Blanco, the second one was filled with grilled pork and topped with Mole Poblano and the third one was filled with shredded chicken and then topped with plantain, sweet potato and pineapple that had been sauteed in chile ancho mole. This plate was served with mexican rice that had peas and carrots. Yum!! True Mexican rice. It was very good. You also had your choice of black bean, charro beans or refried beans. We went with the refried beans they were very tasty and topped with just a touch of white cheese. My daughter and I tried each enchilada one by one... after we were all done the winner hands down was the Mole Blanco. We had never tried anything like this before and the flavors were outstanding. Much better than the same ol' Tex -Mex that is all around Austin. Don't get me wrong Tex-Mex is good too.... but when you want something different more traditional and not so commercial give Hecho En Mexico a try. Oh my gosh... this has to be some of the worst food I have ever had in my life. After noticing the happy hour special signs along William Cannon, Mark M and I decided to stop in; we both love Ceviche and were so excited to try some at half price for happy hour. Wowzers... it was horrific. The Ceviche was so spicy, you couldn't taste anything! Which might have been good, since the shrimp wasn't even de-veined and was the texture of rubber, the fish was like rubber as well and everything looked previously frozen. YUCK! We also ordered the guacamole. It was ok. Creamy from the sour cream we think they add to it, but nothing to write home about or bring us back. We also decided to share the Enchiladas de Mariscos. Now, for $14.50, I expect yummy stuff... not so. The shrimp were the tiny, frozen salad size ones, the calamari was rubbery and disgusting and again, the sauce was so spicy you couldn't taste any real flavors of anything. Don't even get me started on the $4 margaritas that are just gross and you can get better $1 margaritas on Thursdays at El Arroyo and the food's better there, as well! The waiter comped us for both the Ceviche and the Enchiladas de Mariscos and even asked if we'd like to try something else, but I just couldn't bring myself to even try; everything had been such a disappointment. read more

This is officially my favorite Interior Mexican restaurant in Austin. The food is delicious. I can taste the love and attention that is behind the food. My favorite dish is by far the $13.50 Chiles En Nogada Roasted poblano pepper stuffed with shredded pork, cooked in peanut sauce with almonds & raisins; garnished with a creamy walnut sauce & sprinkled with pomegranates. The pork is tender and the combination of the nuts and sweet raisins is perfect. There is a server there (who's name escapes me) that is simply the best. She has remembered us since our first visit. The last time we were in she made a point to shake our hands upon entry and exit. She is friendly and very knowledgeable about the food. Know this before you go...THIS IS NOT TEX-MEX. If melted plastic cheese, pickled jalapeños and beans from a can are what you are after, this is not the place for you. read more

What started out as a disaster turned out to be a decent lunch break for myself and little Rooster. This place has been on my radar since the ROTD a couple weeks ago. This is now the third restaurant that has occupied this space. Haunted? Cursed? Only the restaurant Gods know at this point. I ordered the Conchinita Pibil with great anticipation. The plate arrived and I was so impressed I whipped out my cell phone and took a couple of shots. The presentation was way above strip mall chic with the meat encased in a banana leaf. The black beans and the rice were amazingly tasty. I dove in to the meat only to find that the pork was way overcooked and dry. I tried to stomach it; but I couldn't go forward. The waiter was concerned about my experience and removed the plate. I then ordered the fajita taco plate. Both the beef and chicken tacos were delicious! I also appreciated the flavors of the salsa with smoky ancho and cilantro. My rule is..or maybe I just made this rule up today. Good Mexican/Tex-Mex is a decent A-OK nod. The four or five star nod would be if they made their own tortillas. We sat at a table in line with the kitchen doors and one of the cooks ran by with a 40 pack of tortillas. There are many good things about this place: casual, great upbeat music, full bar. The food was meh. I expected something more, hearing this was food from interior Mexico. But it wasn't "home cooked" - for example - The "Mexican rice" was that Tex-mex orange color with what you could tell was a frozen peas and carrots mix. We had queso flamedo, in a bowl. Layered not mixed, it had ground chorizo on the bottom, melted white cheese (this was authentic, very good) and topped with pick de gallo. Over all the best thing about the meal was the appetizer. However, arriving in a bowl rather than the typical hot plate made the cheese harden and separate from the oil too fast. It was difficult to mix at the table. And it came with only 4 tortillas and we had to order more. The tres Leches was a regular cake with sauce poured on it. Like perhaps a store bought sponge cake? It was topped with bright pink generic strawberry ice cream. I'd recommend this place for margaritas and queso with friends but not dinner. Or dessert. read more

First, let me start by saying that if you are looking for Tex-Mex then "Made in Mexico" will probably not fit the bill. This is traditional Mexican cuisine. I will start with the staff. They were wonderful. Very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable in the food served. The decor was top notch and the atmosphere was great. There were not too many customers, as we got there after the lunch rush and before dinner. Talking to the staff, we found that lunches are not TOO busy, and dinners rarely need reservations. The food was nothing short of spectacular. The traditional mole was AWESOME. The chef came out and described how he makes his mole and it was quite an education. This is some of the best mole I've had in Austin. The fact that they have 3 different moles is a huge plus. The fact that you can get all three on the same plate is even better. The chips and salsa were also great. The salsa was different than most and based almost entirely on peppers with no tomatoes. It was sweet, a little tangy and not terribly spicy, but still great. My wife got the Chiles en Nogada which was a form of chile relleno, but with a light, creamy, sweet sauce on top. The sauce itself was a little too sweet, but when combined with the spicy pork, it was perfect. We ended the night with mole ice cream that was amazing and unlikely anything else I've ever had. It had the sweet mole both in the ice cream itself and as a topping. If you go, you have to try it. The tres leches cake was disappointing and even though we were a table of 6 sharing two deserts we didn't finish it. The atmosphere is simple, classy and seems like it works well for everything from a not-super-fancy date night to a family event. Just as a heads up, this is upscale Mexican and has prices to match. Most entrees are about $15 and you can expect a tab with drinks and either appetizers or desert to run about $30 per person. Still, it's well-spent money. read more

I really wanted to like this place since it's named "Hecho En Mexico". I feel like they advertised it as authentic Mexican food but is anything but authentic. I ordered the chile relleno and it lacked flavor - actually seemed to lack a lot of things. The chile also was not cooked well, it was very hard to even cut into. They only drizzled a little bit of sour cream, def not enough for the amount we paid for. In addition, the meat inside the chile just wasn't appetizing for me. I gave some to my cat and not even my cat would eat it (lol). Also ordered a burrito and it was very small and lacked a lot in flavor. Def a let down :/ read more

I am considering swinging by for dinner around 8 PM tonight as I enjoyed my breakfast so much, plus I need to try the margaritas as in my humble a Mexican Restaurant is not worth their salt unless they serve a decent Margarita. Yesssss. Fresh, from scratch ingredients combined to make delicious dishes in reasonable portion sizes. I had a guava frozen margarita which was perfect, while my husband had a strawberry frozen that I thought was too heavy on syrup. The chips were medium thickness, and the salsa wasn't too spicy but needed a little more salt. When I asked which molé was the least spicy, the server offered to bring me a sample of all three, which was really nice and appreciated. I settled on the mole poblano and got that dish with chicken, which had two thin chicken breasts, rice, and choice of beans. My husband's chicken fajitas were sizzling hot and he thought they were great. We also tried the tres leches, which was just okay, in my opinion. Parking is easy, service was prompt and friendly. Hecho en Mexico food is not that great. The staff and wait folks are super nice, attentive, quick, and do a great job. The menu has a good selection of different items to choose from. So this is just based on the items we ordered. I got the pastor taco. Pastor tacos are great when the pork if shaved off the spinning "trompo" or rotisserie you see at taco stands in Mexico. This pastor was shredded, was not bad but just great true pastor tacos are not shredded. I asked for their home made corn tortillas but was served on flour. I'm not so picky and usually don't make a stink about that. The cheese enchiladas are ok. What really sucked was the middle of one enchilada was cold and cheese still a block that was colder. Not to make a stink, just ate around it and filled up. All in all, I don't think the reviews here warrant the 4 stars. But, the people here were nice and courteous... read more

Ambiance - 3 star. Nothing out of the blue. Some nice music and cozy seatings Drinks - 2 star. We tried their margaritas specials. Really disappointed. One tasted like fermented juice and another was just ice and tequila. Also tried the traditional margaritas. It was just ok. Food- 3.5 star. Enchiladas were good. Not a lot cheese to kill the flavor. Beans and rice were above average as well. Another dish; revolver (don't remember the full name). Roasted pulled chicken, greens and queso fresco on fried tortilla.
