    Great atmosphere!

When dining in Mexico a good gauge of a restaurant is whether there are a mix of local Mexicans and tourists dining together. Hecho en Mexico is that kind of place. The menu caters to a wide variety of tastes; there are "burgers'n'fries" for those that like that, to traditional Mexican standards, enchiladas, tacos, etc. And there are even a few Mexican delicacies (Try the huitlacoche fondue; you will love it. They've got a reasonable selection of domestic beers, a modest wine list, can make a few standard cocktails. So that's covered. The ambiance is terrific! The central dining area is in a sort of patio environment, but with a roof that closes for inclement weather, or opens to let the sun pour in. But, as I started to say, I could tell this place was great because both times I went there were an equal mix of diners: Gringos and Mexican groups. Families celebrating an event, and tourists just passing thru. Prices are right; selection is first-rate. Highly recommended!

Perhaps the following will provide the incentive for you to try Hecho En Mexico: * An American raised in Mexico was on my flight south. He was returning to visit his parents who still live there and told me they'd be dining that evening at Hecho En Mexico (HEM); * On the short list of restaurant recommendations compiled by my airbnb host, an expat, HEM was listed; and * I ate there twice during a 7 day visit to San Miguel de Allende. Undeniably, there's something about HEM that appeals to those not hailing from Mexico. Jumbo-sized portions are likely part of it, but there's more to it than that. At lunch, the restaurant's courtyard was open to the sky and an interior cactus garden had hummingbirds flitting in and out. Chips and salsa are provided here, and the menu consists of a lot of familiar things including meal-sized salads that appeal to those hailing from California (as a tourist, the decision of whether or not to eat raw vegetables in MX is your call). On both a lunch and dinner visit I departed with leftovers ample enough to easily comprise another meal. I returned to HEM a second time not because I was wowed by anything I sampled here but the expansive menu and pleasant courtyard ambiance (definitely sit here) were enough to warrant a return. When traveling, sometimes one desires a place that feels like home and though this isn't quite that, it somehow came closer than anyplace else I dined at in San Miguel.

This place was DELICIOUS. The service was great. There's an English menu available. It's very easy to find vegetarian foods. I got chili relleno with nopales and rice, and my grandpa got enchiladas verdes with nopales and a sweet potato casserole. Everything was amazing (I sampled from his plate). The salsas are so flavorful. It's also very comfortable inside, and the art on the walls was nice. The prices were reasonable. If you're in SMA, this is a must-go.

This was a local recommendation from our tour guide. Looks unassuming from outside but is a beautiful restaurant and affordable!! We loved the kale and quinoa salad and the chicken, and fish tacos. Strawberry lemonade was great too

The grilled pork with cacti and Creme corn and peppers. Loved the spicy dark smoky pepper sauce.

Ambience. B Service. A Food. A Price. A Found in town of San Miguel ... middle of street. Parking is hard to find. I recommend getting taxi for under 100 pesos or less depending where you are around the city. Don't even try to bring a car unless you're in the know of the area. Hostess was very friendly and accommodating in letting us preorder drinks at the bar while waiting for seating. It took less than 20 mins for The 3 of us. Ordered a pitcher of reg margarita which the bartender freshly squeezed the limes. It was a bit tart so we requested more agave azúcar which made it deliciously drinkable. $320 pesos The server was very friendly in recommending dishes and sides. They give 2 salsas , tomatillo and some dark chili salsa (mild spice) with fresh fried tortillas! I wanted something seasonal local and Mexican...albeit. The menu is great for families and kids. Anything from Mexican flavor dishes to hamburgers to fried fish. The sides were a lot to choose also. Good to know everything made to order and hot. I ordered the grilled pork!! Nice, thick and juicy!!! The sides were nice tender cactus with s mild tangy sauce and also crema peppers. All was delicious. I especially loved the dark spicy smoked pepper sauce. My friends burger sin bun was perfectly medium. Nice and pink and flavorful. My other friend had the tálapia with some red tomato sauce. Very flavorful. Everything we had was delicious and flavorful. I would go back for sure for various picky eaters as there is something for everyone. I'm a fan!

The waiter brought these out for my daughter to eat guacamole because they don't have gluten. She has celiac

With a very cool roof that can retract and open if it isn't raining, as well as a lovely staff, Hecho in Mexico is worth a visit. We went on a day that it was pouring rain on the retractable roof and as soon as it stopped they open the roof to the sun it was a very enjoyable place to eat especially during COVID-19 with fears of being to close in enclosed air. They check your temperature as you go in and give hand sanitizer. They don't have a lot of gluten free options as the chips or totopos are fried with other items with wheat. Our daughter has celiac so we always need gluten free food. However, they were very careful in making her food and brought out a special cracker that doesn't have gluten so she could eat the guacamole. Great ambiance and a mix of locals and tourists.

She went to this particular traditional restaurant known for their signature dish, Molcajete. The term first refers to a Mexican mortar bowl made of basalt volcanic rock standing on three stubby legs. The same term also refers to the food inside. It's quite simple because it's all about the ingredients and the execution. Jamie W and I ordered the MX$550 Mix Volcanic Bowl where they grilled large amounts of arrachera (skirt steak), chicken, and cecina (cured beef) while heating up the molcajete. The meat was then layered in the bowl along with nopales (cactus), green onion, chiles, peppers, and queso blanco cheese. A spicy green chile verde sauce was drizzled all over the gluttonous mix (Photo 7). Fresh guacamole and creamy refried beans were served on the side (Photo 4). A stack of freshly made tortillas was provided in order to gorge on all of the hearty indulgence which continues to stream well after its arrival at the table. The total amount could've easily served four ravenous people with both the arrachera and nopales the delectable standouts. Out of blissful ignorance, we both ordered salads as if the volcanic bowl wasn't going to satisfy us. Jamie had the MX$135 Mixed Salad with lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, red onion, pasilla chiles, mushrooms, and a rosette of avocado slices (Photo 8). I went with the MX$200 House Salad with lettuce, hearts of palm, cubes of chihuahua cheese, green olives, grape tomatoes, and red onion (Photo 9). Both were more than freshly satisfying as we were filling up on housemade tortilla chips with red salsa and fresh pico de gallo (Photo 5). The space was cavernous with plenty of room for large parties as families converged on this place. We could totally envision live music performances in here, especially with a long, fully stocked bar beckoning. Although I've seen mocajetes on random Mexican menus around San Francisco, I agree with Pati that this type of place would be quite successful stateside. If you're planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende, I recommend following Pati's advice. From our third stop, Le Pegaso (review: https://yelp.to/rmPAJsgLVf), we had to cross the cobblestone streets around the central plaza, Jardin Allende. Normally an uneventful stroll, it felt more precarious after three bar stops. We made it without injury though. This spot was a spacious, more traditional restaurant with two bars in front. Our group was seated around a dining table. I noticed our Tequila Paloma was a bit skimpier this time (Photo 7), perhaps an acknowledgement that we were tapering off our alcoholic consumption. However, we ended up with the evening's best plate, a pair of Emmoladas, an enchilada-like house specialty filled with shredded chicken and covered liberally in a savory-sweet dark chocolate mole sauce (Photo 8). I would definitely have that again. This obscure place from outside, when you walk in becomes what appears to be a Hacienda along with a patio, Terraza and balconies all around and cantina where you walk in! Not only was this place beautiful in the most traditional of Mexican styles, with tiled and wrought iron stairs to upper balconies, built in shelves and niches withing stone, wallpapered and muralled walls, a typical bar inlaid with the structure with magnificent woodwork and an excellent bartender I might add, clay flower pots galore hanging from the balcony flooring, and an incredible full skylight, wall to wall, but that's not the best of it. The food. The food was magnificent. I have had many a meal in Mexico, I have tried many, many styles of regional cuisine, but I had never ever had the specialty of this house - the Enmolada! The unique specialty of the house at La Cocina Café del Viajero are Enmoladas which are a dish consisting of tortillas in mole sauce... stuffed with fillings of almost any inkling! Enmoladas are a established indigenous dish made with corn tortillas that is coated in mole sauce. This is what I had to have. First let me mention that the food here is incredible, overall. We obviously started with bottled water, a couple of okay Margaritas and some Modelos. As is the custom, we had the Guacamole, which was extraordinarily excellent, with homemade chips, really, really good chips. Someone at the table ordered the Enchilada Capital with Mexican rice - extraordinary and very picoso! To make a long story short, my order of the Enmolada was exquisite. Most folk like me, were only familiar with enchilada sauce, but Enmolada sauce is unique. The enchiladas are smothered in mole sauce, offering a exceptional merge of flavors that stretch from spicy and sweet to savory and smoky. Totally overwhelming the palate, as your tastebuds go in a freefall. They compacted shredded chicken, then rolled it, then garnished it with fresh toppings of crema and cheese. Wow! Needless to say, this was an experience! An exquisite location, excellent service, terrific atmosphere and one of the most life changing taste adventures I had in Mexico. Try an Enmolada, maybe here, it's terrific.

Staffed by three buddies who have all worked in high end restaurants (here in San Miguel as well as the US and Europe), this tiny establishment doesn't even have a sign outside (just take down the address and you'll see a sign that says "Hotel" by the door. Enter and ascend a flight of stairs and it'll be on your right. The meal begins with chips and a warm black bean dip (made with exotic ingredients they'd needed to pick up the previous day in something that sounded like a drug deal!). Next order the mushroom soup--a highlight of our 7 day trip to San Miguel. We also shared an order of guacamole (excellent as you'd expect, with thick chunky chips), and an order of Requeson (never heard of that, but turned out to be a cheese log with spicy/tangy flavor, served with hot corn tortillas). For mains, we had the torts de lingua (delicious if you're not weirded out by beef tongue), duck floutas, and the pork dish (Costilla en Abodo Oaxaqueno), which had excellent flavor but was a battle (large bone in the middle so difficult to eat). They've only been open for a few months and they have a few kinks to work out--the menu is not organized in a logical way (green salad and mushroom soup appear at the end rather than first). Meals did not all arrive together, but to be fair we were a large party (8), and ordered multiple items per person. They also need to update their Google entry, which failed to note that they're closed on Tuesdays. And as noted before, having a sign would be helpful. Remember to BYOB because they don't serve alcohol, but in the end that's yet another thing that makes this place an incredible bargain! We managed to eat VERY well for less than $16 per person. Just wish we'd discovered it sooner because we would've returned if we had time. Maybe for breakfast, which I hear is also fantastic.
