This is acceptable bar-be-que; nothing more, nothing less. The meat, while of good quality, didn't taste all that smoky, and it was covered in far too much sauce for my liking. I confess that I prefer heavily smoked ribs with sauce on the side, though. Perhaps the heavy coating of sauce on lightly-smoked /un-smoked ribs is a Chicago-thing? Their recession special of a full rack of baby backs for $10 ($11 including tax) is hard to beat, though. read more

So I ordered a large lunch for my roommate and I, we got it delivered fyi. We split the following: -Pulled Pork Sandwich - very good, not the best I've had but good. -BBQ Burger - cooked to well done, as in was hard on the exterior of the meat. -Rib tips - their sample/side size is still huge, they were good too. -Cornbread - maybe it was old? We took one bite and left the rest, it was way to dry. -Peach cobbler - delivered cold, so I warmed it up. Decent, but probably not worth the calories. Overall, Hecky's does some things well, and you should avoid some other things. I may be back for the ribtips though! read more

Our go-to spot for authentic southern BBQ when that's all that will fit the bill. Excellent ribs and hot links, potato salad, greens and my favorite...7-Up cake. I also think they have a killer turkey burger. I even buy the sauce for my own burgers when I'm grilling at home. Not only does my family eat there, this is also an excellent place for business lunches. They have a box lunch special that includes everything down to the wet-nap...and they deliver. When attendees at my last meeting opened up their hot and savory lunches, it was all smiles. No dry turkey sandwiches for us; everyone got a delicious pulled chicken or pork sandwich, bottled water, chips, and cookies. Very affordable and convenient. Since moving to Florida I miss the hometown taste of their smoked ribs and hot links so when I'm in town it's the first place (next to Garrett's Popcorn) I must hit. I lived in Evanston briefly 20 years ago and never got the chance to eat at Hecky's - though I intended to. Just recently I was back in town and made a point to stop in for BBQ. My only regret is that I did not eat here sooner. The half fried chicken was delicious as was the Mac & Cheese. I left with a bottle of sauce and dry rub to use at home. I am a true Evanstonian so I have to give a review.... I don't care for the tips, the ribs I could take or leave, snack pack is a good value, the pulled pork sandwich is real good. BUT THE PLACE IS SO DARN COLD it makes it hard to sit and wait for your food. No stars for this place! Horrible expereince!!! I can't believe they think they're the best in the rib department! We placed an order at four and by after five it wasn't even near filled! OH SOMEONE forgot to put our whole order in! But SOMEONE forgot to let us know by the time five o!clock came rolling around! Got a Groupon for full slab of ribs, 2 sides and 2 1-liter bottles. Reviews raved about the rib-tips so ordered that as extra and a couple sauces on the side. Guy on phone super nice. Street parking very easy. Young girl at front packing food, and greeting folks - cute kind smile, never showed frustration at another groupon (yes it happens at other places). Loved the ribs and tips (OMG- defntly going back for the tips and not sharing with my kids who devoured it). I picked the jambalaya and macncheese for sides. Most amazing BBQ EVER! Full & superb menu with the best tasting baby back ribs on the planet. Awesome sides, top notch barbeque sauce (that can be purchased by the bottle too), and excellent customer service complete this restaurant. Prices are very reasonable as well. Cornbread, Mac'n'Cheese, and Greens are excellent. I wish their were 100 more Hecky's all over the country...It's that good! Only thing that could make it better would be a dine-in area but it's so good and delivery or carry-out so easy it doesn't matter. read more

Definitely highest rating and I'm sure we order again and again. I've ordered from here 3 more times since my initial review and every time it was AWESOME! We've had all three types of ribs, the barbequed chicken and several Southern food sides (the cornbread with the greens in it is to Die For!). I actually love the fries at Hecky's, I cannot lie. I've also been recently acquainted with the black eyed peas side dish and that, too, is really good. It's a bit on the spicy side, though, so beware if spicy is not your thing. I don't know if this has to do with ordering via groupon or what. I had a small order for delivery at 12 pm. It took a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes to get less than 2 miles away. It seems the only reason I received my food is because I called an hour and 45 minutes after the order time to ask what was going on. Preemptive tip for terrible service, great. This may have to do with their external order systems (groupon), it may not. I was unhappy either way. read more

Hecky's baby back ribs are tender and meaty, and he's right: "It's the sauce!" The tangy sweet sauce is just the right consistency to coat the ribs, and there's enough to use as a dipping sauce for the fries. Although there are many kinds of BBQ sauce out there, Hecky's sauce is a perfect fit for my tastes. Some time ago, I tried the rib tips, which were just as tasty as the ribs, but as you'd expect, they had more fat and bone. The counter staff are always polite and helpful, and you can sit in the window while they're preparing your order. Parking along Golf/Emerson Road has never been a problem. So I recently moved up Evanston and have been looking for a good BBQ place, I found Hecky's on Grubhub and was happy that they had no minimum order price (That makes me so angry) I ordered a Pulled pork, mac n' cheese, and baked beans, needless to say I was impressed with all three. I wish I would have gone for the Hot BBQ sauce on the pulled pork because the Mild was well... Mild, normally most places have a more spicy mild, but hey I got what I ordered. I was a little sad when they called me about 5 minutes later saying they were out of the Green River I had ordered, but they gave me two cans of Dr. Pepper instead. As a student, I appreciate how their sauce not only goes great on everything, but I can use it as a substitute for toothpaste, body wash, and deodorant. I can only comment on their delivery service (through GrubHub) as I have yet to dine at their actual establishment. While their menu options range from decent to downright delicious, their delivery & customer service has ensured I will never order from them again & will likely never visit the actual restaurant. We ordered a total of 5 times & because of our experiences, we will never give them our business again. The 1st time we ordered, we received no dressing with the salad. We called to see if the delivery driver could come back & were told their salads do not come with dressing. The 2nd time we ordered, everything was fine, except this time the salad did come with dressing. I called to inquire & was told their salads always come with dressing packets. I figured the 1st time was a fluke & didn't think too much of it. The 3rd time we ordered, our delivery took over 90 minutes. We live ~5 minutes away & ordered simple items (& pre-paid a 25% delivery tip!). The food was cold & soggy. Called to find out what the issue was & person was mildly apologetic, but didn't offer any sort of solution. The 4th time we ordered, the salad we received was beyond disgusting. It was much smaller than ever received before, half the lettuce was brown, I could count the number of pieces of cheese crammed in one corner & the tomatoes were starting to spoil. We called this time to legitimately complain, were told they were out of lettuce, so they could not make another & that they would refund us the cost of the salad. To me, that is just poor customer service. I understand that salads are probably pretty low on a BBQ restaurant's list of priorities, but if they can't do it right, they shouldn't do it at all. The 5th time we ordered, delivery was a complete disaster. They were out of 2 menu items (corn-on-the-cob & cookies) we ordered & instead of calling us to let us know or offering substitutions, we simply got e-mail messages from GrubHub stating the items were cancelled from our order. Almost a half-hour after our estimated delivery time, we called to check in & were told it would be another 15 minutes, which would be close to 2 hours after we ordered. After 20 minutes had gone by, we contacted GrubHub to see if they could help & they were told our food would arrive shortly. After 10 minutes had passed, we just decided to cancel the order. Again, no effort on the part of the restaurant to communicate with us or try to make up for their poor service. I'm disappointed because their food, particularly their fries, 7-Up cake (when it is fresh & not starting to stale!), turkey drumstick & muffins are quite delicious, it's just really not worth it to put up with such horrible service, especially when they don't seem to care. Honestly, if they're unable to cope with the demands of delivery service, they should consider not offering it then. read more

I've worked less than a mile away for years, but never ordered from Hecky's til tonight. The sweet potato pie was fantastic, but I was deeply disappointed by the jambalaya. All of the meat was dry, and it came with a thick orange layer of grease on top. The rice had rice hulls in it, and I didn't spot a single veg (I'm used to jambalaya having at the very least okra). The red beans and rice were also just okay--definitely not as good as I'd expected, after hearing co-workers rave about the place for years.
