I've eaten here a lot of times and have NEVER been disappointed. The food is always perfect. I love the ribs. The links are terrific. In fact, I have had a close personal relationship with almost every item on the menu. Good food, nice people, hip place. If you have a refined palette for BBQ, you want to eat here. Been coming here for years. Love the sauce and the mutt. They have great hot links and rib tips. My girlfriend always gets the chicken tenders and they're always tender and crispy. Parking sucks but they do deliver. With that said, I think they should add more options for sides. Healthier alternatives, maybe some type of salad. Corn is not a vegetable. read more

Just ordered delivery off of their website (no delivery fee), we ordered regular rib tips, chicago rib tips, baked beans, and coleslaw. It was so much food! Everything was really great! I don't know the difference between the chicago and regular rib tips, but they were both excellent. We think maybe the chicago ones were a little smaller portion of meat and the fries were in the box? There was enough food for 4 people at least, we barely made a dent in it and spent less than $40. Dear Hecky's folks. Please consider adding bbq seitan to the menu as a vegetarian option. Seitan is wheat gluten and is a high protein meat substitute that vegetarians like me eat often. It has a chewy texture like meat. It comes precooked and can be kept frozen. You could slice it, slather w/bbq sauce, bake it and serve on roll w/onions. You could also serve on bed of brown rice. You could also search on-line for other recipes (www.epicurious.com, etc). I'd think this is a low-risk, low cost way to expand the menu and leverage what you already do well: great sauce, great sides. Combined w/your already meatless sides, vegetarians like me could now have full meal at Heckys. Thanks for considering it. read more

If you are looking for good barbecue, then Hecky's is the place to go in Evanston. My husband and I tried it on a whim one after recently moving to the area, and we were not disappointed. Their ribs are delicious, and satisfying. Their sauce is a wonderful combination or spicy, tangy and sweet-it draws the flavors of the meat out perfectly. Their cornbread muffin's are my favorite, and the healthy portion of fries you get with the ribs are great. The fries have a wonderful barbecue seasoning that really tie them in with the meal. The Bad: It's Sunday, lunch time. I just ate Heckys for the first time. I ordered half slab of baby back ribs with Cole slaw and fries. My boyfriend had the pulled pork sandwich with fries and drink. He rates Heckys a 2/5 and I rate it a 1/5. Our fries were soggy. The Cole slaw was bland and watery. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty but next time we would want the sandwich without the small bones/hard bits in it. The ribs were awful; they were tough, dry, not "fall off the bone" pork. The Good: The rib sauce was good! The drink (7up) was good! Friendly service! Easy Parking. We don't plan on returning to Heckys unless the food quality is drastically improved. Until then, we will continue to go to Bat 17 in Evanston for their delicious pulled pork sandwiches. read more

One word, Disgusting! The only time this dinner would have been acceptable would be for Halloween, because all you get is a box of bones. What the Heck-y is up with that? I submitted an order through grubhub.com. It should have been a red flag when the delivery charge was $4.50 . After submitting my order anyway, Hecky's called me to say they didn't have the flavor pop I selected (no biggie), after I decided on another, broke the news that they also didn't have the dessert I ordered. After I decided on another dessert that was $2 less than the other, they didn't even refund me or anything. My ETA was 50 minutes. An hour later the driver called to ask where I lived. After we hung up the driver called again no more than 5 minutes later, and persisted to call every few minutes until he was inside my hallway. The corn muffins tasted stale and were thrown away, the peach cobbler tasted like canned peaches with frozen crust and the cookies came in a zip lock bag, not even a Hecky's sticker on it or anything. The only edible dish was the mac 'n' cheese and it was cold. You think that would have been enough, but when I opened my food, half the dinner was missing. When I called to let them know, they asked if I wanted them to still deliver it... really??? I said yes and told the lady that I was disappointed with my service, she obviously didn't care by her response. It is an hour and fifteen minutes after I received my food (2 hours and fifteen minutes after my order was submitted) and I just received the rest of my order from the same driver, who called me, again! I would put 0 stars if I could. We ordered online so that there could be NO errors. They didn't deliver our soda. We called several times and the call went to a voicemail that was full. I finally got ahold of someone named Vicky. I was put on hold at least 3 times and waited for 7 minutes before I was disconnected. I called back and got Vicky again. This time she gave me an attitude when I told her how frustrated I was and said to me, "Please don't talk to me like I'm slow or something." To which I responded, "I order online so that the order can't get messed up, you forget part of my order, you put me on hold for 7 minutes then disconnect me, and I have to call back and now you are giving ME an attitude?" to which she continued by saying, "Your number." The food was delivered luke warm and very salty. If there hadn't been an attitude I would have given it at least 3 of 5 stars. This whole ordeal was a bit ridiculous. What a waste. read more

The best rip tips you will find anywhere. Excellent Tender, slightly gristly and fatty meat with an incredible sauce to soak it up. I would recommend the Chicago style combo which is the small rib tips with chopped up spicy pork link thrown in, made fresh in the restaurant. Ordered tonight for the first time and highly disappointed. My sister is in the hospital and we were looking for something nice that could deliver for Father's Day. They forgot 2 of our dinners and messed up all the drinks.When I called they apologized for forgetting the dinners and said they substituted the drinks because they did not have what we ordered in stock. They told us when we called at 8:30 that they could not make the missing items because their kitchen was closed even though they advertise they were open until 9. I asked them to credit my card but was told we would be given a house credit on our next order- which does nothing for us because the food we did get tasted terrible and we will never order from there again. Paid $7.50 for for a Pulled Pork sandwich that had v e r y little meat on it. It was mostly bun. The pork and the sauce were delicious but not worth the price. $4 for a small bag of sweet potato fries was a bit much, too, but tolerable. read more

Yeah, I'm officially done with Hecky's after today. Every time I say I'm through with them because of the bad quality of food, I manage to give them one more chance hoping to catch them on a good day. I've visited this place about 10 times total, and only had good food from them about 4 times. Well, it wasn't another good day placing an order here. I ordered my usual original mutt and received a container full of weird cut small rib bones that were charred (no meat at all, and they didn't look like rib tips, just different cuts and shapes of BONES), cold burnt fries, a ton of sauce that smothered everything, a sad overcooked hot link, and two of the most dried out smoked chicken wings I've ever had. I actually thought it was jerky! All my food was cold, old, burned, dry, and inedible. The sauce was good as usual, though. I've already made up my mind that the very next time I want bbq that I'm going to Smoque's or trying out Honey 1's on Western. I've given Hecky's my very last $10 for poor quality, inedible, and unsatisfactory, food. I was hungry but, too upset to call them to complain and didn't feel like driving back up there. I ended up eating some of my fiancé s wings from the chicken shack, although he warned me to not eat there in the first place. He too, stopped eating here after he ordered a half bbq chicken and it was small, and dry as well. He also ordered a turkey link that they put in the microwave then, slathered it in sauce and on bread. Obviously, they could care less about how important consistency is for running a successful restaurant. All I know is, I refuse to come back. So today I placed a order from hecky's barbecue and I had the worst service I can possibly get. I ordered my food from Grubhub because I was working at the time. They made a mistake on my order put barbecue sauce everywhere on my fries and wings when I asked for it on the side. when I receive my food I noticed it was wrong so I called heckys back to inform them about the wrongs that took place but once I got on the phone with the girl there that claimed to be the manager " GIGI POWELL " gave me a major attitude on the phone told me she couldn't do anything for me even though I paid 20 bucks for a food order that was delivered & wrong, so I informed her if she can't do anything for me she has lost a customer. I had to leave work to go to the restaurant when I got there I asked to speak to the owner she proceeded to say she was the manager , I asked for someone in a higher position, she said she would go grab him & acted like she was looking for him, she came back and told me he was not there and only comes in randomly. I let her know that I should not have to leave work to address this issue, she said I had to put "on the side" online for them to get my order right. Mind you, she's sarcastically giving me attitude while talking to me still, I told her I will not be coming back there and she still gave me a sarcastic attitude and said " thats fine" . NEVER will I order from here again and I will make sure to advise others not to go to this place (that has very horrible customer service) as well. read more

I went late so fries were stale and the meat wasn't great. The chicken wings were very dry.

These ribs are simply not for me. I like ribs that have a smoked flavor but retain their juicy tenderness. These ribs definitely had deeply penetrated smoke flavor, but their texture and tenderness was more like pork jerky than the type of BBQ ribs I prefer. The meat was dry, tough, and tasted like over-smoked ham. I do not want ribs with meat that is disintegrating, but I do want them closer to fall-off-the-bone than petrified to the bone like those at Hecky's. The sauce was pretty good flavor, tangy almost citrus with a hint of heat, and lavished on top, but nothing could save the rib meat. The macaroni and cheese was pretty good, but over-priced for the portion. The mashed potatoes were bland - which was good because I could feed them to my one-year-old son and not have to worry about them being too flavorful or salty. The BBQ chicken was better than the ribs - once again swimming in the BBQ sauce. At least the chicken was tender, juicy, and not smoked until it turned into jerky. I used to go here all the time years ago. After tonight I doubt I'll go back. We went in and placed our order at 626pm, at 650 the manager asked to see our ticket (after we watched many ppl come and go). At 7:03pm we got our food (I knew I should've checked it, but I figured after 40 mins, no way was it going to be wrong). Got home (20 mins away) to find no Mac & cheese (that I DID pay for) and a BBQ brisket sandwich with no BBQ sauce on it (and none on the side). Hamburger was mediocre at best. I called to complain and manager told me when I come back he'll give me a new sandwich and Mac & cheese...I told him that this will do me no good as I doubt I'll come back...especially to go back just to get what I paid for to beginwith. Brisket seemed like it would have been good if it wasn't bone dry. I hate writing bad reviews but this was absurd. Waiting 40 mins for a hamburger, brisket sandwich, Mac and cheese (that I didn't get) & mashed potatoes is ridiculous, it wasn't crowded & at most order should've taken 5-7 mins. read more

i can definitely say that they have delicious finger licking oh so savory with a little bit of spicy deliciousness meaty ribs. its sauce that makes a good plate of ribs, and hecky's has the tastiest sauce. if you're into more of a sweet bbq sauce, this might not be your best pick, as it has a tangier and semi-spicy flavor, but soo good. and the fact that they have 1/2 off deals almost every day of the week is awesome. great rib tips, and i have yet to try their fried chicken! highly recommend hecky's! read more

Heckys was at one point , in my opinion , the best place for ribs in the area. At some point in the late 90's , they started smoking the ribs too much or something because I bought about 5 slabs of ribs in a row that were way too tough. I can't verify if they have corrected this problem in the last 6 or so years , I probably should check back but haven't yet. All that said , this place has The Best rib tips anywhere , period. This is in large part because of their sauce , which is the best I've ever tasted. Heckys sauce is the yardstick I measure any bbq sauce up against anywhere. The area has much improved in the last 10 years , and is now college town trendy . I'd be surprised if they haven't expanded and have a outdoor cafe by now. I used to go here when there was a counter and a register, that's it , and that was all they needed. Go here for the tips , try the ribs , they were still pretty good even when they were over done. I went to Hecky's on Friday May 2, 2014 after having a week-long desire for some tips and hot links. I called in my order around 6:00p, got to the store to pick-up at 6:30 order was not ready. I finally received my order, got home, I live on Howard St., my food was cold. The tips were mostly fat and tasteless. The hot link which is what I really craved was AWFUL, it was dried out, don't know what sand taste like, but I think the hot link was a good imitation. If I lived closer, I would brought the food back and asked for a refund. I hadn't been to Hecky's for a long while, now I remember why. I probably won't go there again. read more

Some of the food is really good, but some just isn't. Get the rib tips, it's what they do well. Unfortunately everything is at least a little spicy so until my kids grow up a little they can't handle it, but it is a tasty sauce. Cole slaw is very good too. I live in the 'burbs, and I don't get into Evanston often. When I do I always make plans to stop at Hecky's to bring home supper. My favorite is the the rib tips-talking about comfort food! In fact several tips disappear on the way home. I also have to pick up a snack pack of rib tips for my brother-in-law, 'cause he'd do the same for me (bless him). The smoked meat is very tasty, and the sauce is is not overpowering, complementing the tips nicely. WORST PLACE EVER...don't even waste you time or money! My girlfriend and I were craving BBQ so we got this place on eat24. We spent about $46 with a $7.50 tip....with that being said we called after an hour and a half only to have the rude girl tell us on the phone (no phone matters and wasn't apologetic at all) that the driver just got back! He didn't even ring the door bell or call the number that was given. She said they would remake the order so we don't get it cold...that sounded awesome except that one of the orders wasn't even what we ordered and completely different. We were suppose get a "mut" but got two boxes of just rib tips and one didn't have sauce nor did they give us the extra sauce that we asked for! We live out in Palatine and have family in Evanston. I have spoken with Hecky in the past about opening up an outpost in the Northwest suburbs! The only ribs and tips you can find out our way are tasteless, and probably microwaved. It is the sauce, and the sheer yumminess of those rib tips that keep us driving out. It is really hard not to open the box and eat them while driving home, but the delicious scent keeps my mouth watering til dinner time!! I live in the Kenwood community on the South Side of Chicago and periodically drive to Evanston to get some of Hecky's BBQ ribs and pulled pork. I have been doing so for quite some time for their food is consistently of the highest quality and taste.
