My appointment with Sabrina was excellent and I loved her chill vibe. Most importantly, I loved my haircut. I'm sitting in a parking lot writing this review immediately after my haircut, which probably says more than anything written below. I have had long, long hair that hadn't been touched in at least half a year, and Sabrina worked such life back into it! My hair is full and airy, and suddenly also has a center part that I like (which has never happened before). I found Hedwig's through Yelp, and have to say all of the five star reviews are much deserved. It was painless to schedule an appointment online last minute. Walking in, I appreciated the small comfortable space and feeling so focused on. The salon is beautiful and neat, and Sabrina was wonderful at working through my hair, talking me through my concerns about my scalp and hair, and trimming and diffusing it into curls I haven't seen in a long time. I don't think I can say much more to express how much I enjoyed this experience - I think I've found a keeper for as long as I'm here. read more

I had my first haircut at Hedwig's today. My hairdresser was Cassidy. Wow. I'm so impressed with Hedwig's standard of care. I had the salon to myself, and I felt extremely safe because of the required mask wearing and cleaning protocols. At the same time I didn't feel like it was overly sterile and I received a very cozy welcome. As an androgynous person with short hair I worried as usual that my hair cutting needs would be a pain but I was delighted to find that Cassidy got the drift of what I was going for and rolled with it, with grace and confidence. We had lovely, easy going conversation and I am SO pleased with the final result- a femme fade that perfectly matches my face and personality. I also loved that the shampoo/conditioner smelled wonderful, and it was extremely affordable for the amount of care. I can't wait to come back. read more

I went to Hedwig's because it was recommended by a friend! I got my hair cut, lightened, and colored for about $250, which is more than I have ever paid for hair services, but I was willing to do so since the place had great reviews. To start with the positives, Ashlee was a wonderful person to work with. I love how my hair turned out and I received many compliments on it! She gave me a lot of hair care tips as well, which I have since implemented in my routine. Since hair color is so expensive and I have student debt, I usually get my hair dyed as a balayage once a year because it grows out well. When I have done this at other salons in the past, the color has never faded and still looked really good 12+ months later when I get it dyed again. Before I got my hair done, I made sure to emphasize that I was only planning on getting it done once and hoping the color would last the year like it has in the past. While I was super happy with the way my hair looked, the first time I washed it (3 days after getting it done), a bunch of the hair dye washed out of my hair and transferred to my towel as well. In a panic, I texted the hair stylist asking if this was normal, because it has never happened to me in the past. Only then did she tell me that the pink color would last a month and the caramel color would last 2. She offered to retone it for $70. Obviously, after paying $250, this is the last thing I wanted to hear. Since I had expressed wanting the color to last for a year, I did not expect this and I would have either gone somewhere else or asked for different colors if I knew it would not last. I willingly paid $250 thinking my hair would last longer than a box-dye from CVS. I got really stressed out and tried not to wash my hair in order to make the color last longer. Despite my best efforts, 10 days after I got my hair colored, the pink was almost entirely gone. I barely had enough time to take pictures to even document I had pink hair. I was really excited and got so many compliments on my hair, but it didn't even last 2 weeks despite being told it would last a month. I'm honestly a little heartbroken over it because it looked really good. I added some pictures with the timestamps on them so you can compare how my hair looked the day it was done and then 12 days after. Today is 23 days after getting my hair done and there is literally no trace of pink. While I love how beautiful my hair looked right after it was done, it was not worth $250 or the 5 hour process for the color to last less than 2 weeks. It feels like I threw away my money. I'm also sad that the solution that was offered was for me to spend more time and money for it to probably only last 2 more weeks. Unfortunately, I'll probably be going to another salon to get the color added back to my hair. This being said, I still gave 4 stars because the haircut was beautiful and so was the short-lived color. Hedwig's just needs to be more upfront with their customers and charge less or get better hair dye. read more

My first visit to Hedwig's was fantastic. The location is right in my neighborhood so I had walked by and appreciated the funky window art but it never appeared opened so I couldn't figure out what it was. Finally, a quick google search revealed that it was a salon which was perfect because I still haven't found a MKE salon I prefer. I called to make an appointment and played phone tag with Vanessa a few times before setting an appointment for an upcoming Saturday morning. I walked over at my appointment time and Vanessa was ready for me. The space is very cute, love the decor. She did a nice job on my hair, 40 minutes and $35 for a long hair cut and style. You can schedule an appointment online, by phone, or text. Once you schedule you receive an email confirmation and reminder of your appointment time. If you live in Riverwest (or beyond) and are looking for a new hair stylist, give Vanessa a try. I'll definitely be back. I moved to Milwaukee ~6 years ago and have not once gotten my hair cut here. I have bills on bills on bills, and no funds left over to go to a fancypants downtown salon to get my hair trimmed. I have been literally taking a pair of fiskars to my poor bleach-damaged hair over my wastebasket at work. I asked my friends where they would recommend, and three names popped up. The other two, which I don't need to mention here, have a variety of subpar reviews. Hedwig's did not, and y'all know how I love Yelp reviews. I set up an appointment through the website, which was super convenient and I also hate talking on the phone. You can have multiple reminders via email and text, which I also appreciated. Vanessa is phenomenal. Super fun and easy to talk to. I've never had the cliche rapport with my hair stylist where I get to yap and truly feel like I'm being listened to. Not only was my hair cut great, but the whole experience was very therapeutic. I've been pretty stressed, okay? As for the cut, she did exactly what I was looking for. My hair looks great and I've been getting loads of compliments. My boyfriend was shocked as to how good it looks and was speechless, being the first time he'd seen me with a proper cut. I don't remember how much it was exactly, but I think it was around $30. Super affordable. The whole salon was super adorable too! Vintage furniture with bright pops of color tucked away in Riverwest. I knew I made the right choice when I walked through the door. I decided to look for a shop closer to home (thanks, Yelp) and read some great reviews about Hedwig's (P.S. Love the name) so I figured I would give it a try. I've been going to Vanessa for years. There's a reason she has such a strong client base who followed her to her new shop--she's simply great at what she does and is an awesome person. Hedwig's is in a cool part of Riverwest. It's easy to get to, and there's always plenty of street parking available. The interior is super rad and very welcoming. I'm gonna cut right to the chase - Vanessa at Hedwig's is the only stylist I've ever seen, ever, anywhere, who was psyched and also not confused when I showed her the men's haircut I wanted. Every time I go to a stylist, I have to explain to them "no, really, I want you to cut my hair like I'm a guy. No, I really don't want you to throw in that feminizing detail you just offered. I used to go to Kentucky to get my haircut by someone I trust with my not-at-all-thick, fine hair. Then I found Vanessa - which was great - EXCEPT - she couldn't take appointments. Long story short: Hedwig's is probably the only place I will be getting my hair cut for the foreseeable future. Let's start at the beginning. My friends Zach and Michael both had real nice haircuts. So nice, in fact, that I actually started noticing my friends' haircuts on a regular basis. Not when they were fresh cuts, mind you, but their on a regular basis heads looked real good. I at the time was living in a world where I cut my own hair with dog shears. I mean, there's a picture of dogs and cats and maybe a horse or something on these shears. But I figured shears are shears, you know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So anyway I reached a point of full-on admiration and I might even go as far as to say jealousy of my friends' cuts which brought me finally to the point of asking them dude, who lifts your ears, dude? And they both independently of one another said "Vanessa." Like this person who has one name and no last name just Vanessa. The vanguard of all other humans on whose birth certificates that name somewhere appears. The Vanessa so reputationally impressive that it was just assumed by these chums of mine that I would of course know exactly who she was, where to go, and duh of course these cuts are from Vanessa, have you seen how fresh they are? Right. It's Vanessa, got it. Hook up some digits so I can correct the damage done by six years of animal shears, brobro. Problem was, Vanessa worked for a long time at a place in the neighborhood that wouldn't allow appointments. Can you believe that? It struck me as silly given how often I needed to make an appointment to fit a haircut into my schedule. Here's what happens when your name is Vanessa and you're the person who everyone goes to for the freshest cuts: a line forms. Sometimes like three hours of waiting because Vanessa is first come first serve cuts and you can't make an appointment because you have to struggle and fight for a cut with Vanessa. You gotta wake up at the ass crack of dawn to get your ears lowered by this enigma. And guess what. You're gonna like it. It's gonna be worth it. Freshest. Cuts. So after a good long while of this arrangement Vanessa, who by the way is a long time resident of beautiful Riverwest and in no way a tourist of the area, thank you very much, realized she could probably do better for herself and her loyal (and I mean LOYAL) customer base by going it alone. A good few months later, Hedwig's was born, July 30, 2015 to much fanfare. It's a cool little space, formerly the Wright Street Resource Center, which, fun fact, is the location of many of the planning meetings that birthed local institution The Riverwest Public House Cooperative. So it's sacred ground in some ways. Let me just say Vanessa beautified the space almost as much as she beautifies clients' heads. Nice and airy, kinda minimal with a little bit of colorful flair. Very cool atmosphere but far far far from pretentious. Vanessa has her own very pleasant and unimposing aesthetic. I think that's all I have to say. Pretty sure Vanessa named this place due to the obvious pun but also the huge nod to Harry Potter, of which she's a real big fan. read more

Vanessa is hands down the best hair stylist I've ever had. I've had short hair since I was 11 and any time I've gone to get my hair cut the stylist usually goes, "No, you don't want it that short." I now live in A totally different state which sucks because I can't seem to find a trusted haircut anymore. Turns out I have to pay a good 80$ for anyone to cut my hair as well as Vanessa does. I have to say as a girl with super thick hair that tends to react poorly to most cuts, Vanessa has never once given me a cut I didn't absolutely love. She works magic on hair which is nice for me because when I'm home I can get my hair cut with zero fear. I am SO excited that she has opened her own salon and I have no doubt that she will be up to her ears with new and old customers. Believe me guys she's worth it!
