My son and I picking our raspberries from low bushes.
    Morgan O.

We finally got to experience blackberry and raspberry picking! It was a really great learning experience for our four year old. He loved watching the large bumblebees and grasshoppers fly all around him. The blackberries weren't as plentiful, and the raspberries seemed hard to find too, so we were there about an hour scouring the bushes. The fields aren't large, it's just a simple piece of land where you get about 20 rows to pick from. The season just opened earlier this month, so we were a bit surprised with the selection. It's really family friendly, but watch for those few gardeners on a mission for their berries and stay out of their way! There's a real finesse to picking the perfect berry, so some advice--pinch from the base of the berry near the seed and apply some light pressure while pulling up and out. If it doesn't come easily, or you feel like you're going to be taking some stem with you, then it's not ripe enough to pull just yet. Leave that youngin' for the folks who come the week after! They also serve these really awesome $3 snow cones. Holy cow were those delicious! They give you a good single size pebble-ice cone in a paper cup and then they pour about a cup of fresh non-artificial raspberry juice on top. Ugh... these are just so good and I wish they would sell just that raspberry syrup to be able to make these at home! Now the price was a bit steep considering we're picking our own, but parking is $5 cash at the entrance and then you walk to the other part of the field and grab some containers. Fill those babies up! Because those are $6 each. When you get back to the table with your container(s) full of berries, that's where you can check out with a card if you choose. They also sell fresh jars of honey, fresh eggs and the epic snow cones in this area, so get them while they're still open for the season!

Clarabelle and Salomon are a fantastic couple. Their business is called New Mexico Harvest Gifts…read moreand is essentially two wonderful local farmers selling their produce and crafts mostly at farmers markets. I don't recall how long ago I started buying from them, but it's been over a decade. Since we started buying from them, they have have become our sole provider of chile, chile pequin, chipotle, chicos and pecans for our family. We get pinto beans (frijoles), flowers and produce from them as they harvested. This year we've been treated to amazing lemon cucumbers. If you're not familiar with them, you are missing out. So good! Their address and number is lovingly placed on your product so you can let them know if you'll be wanting larger quantities of something or buying gifts outside the days/months of farmers markets. To me it's also a personal assurance of someone standing behind their product. I love knowing I'm supporting a loving, hardworking couple that cares about their product because they care about their customers. If you get the chance to know them, you'll find just how special they are. I think it's fun knowing how the crops are doing, how the rain (or lack thereof) is affecting the grow. For instance, they normally grow in Corrales but this year, 2013, the lack of rain forced them to move the crops to Espanol, where she is from. Knowing they live in the East Mountains, do chile grinding and chico preparation in Socorro and make weekly trips to Roswell for some chile products tells me they put in quite a commute for my food. In short, they are excellent farmers and great people with superb products. I highly recommend them.

He recently sent me a box of powders and flakes of various chiles. They have all been excellent. I thought I was going to have them on hand for a long time. Probably not.
