We came here for our anniversary and wow it was amazing. We were served a glass of complimentary champagne which was really nice. Our server was prompt and explained the menu and specials. Our glasses were never empty and we were checked on frequently. We started with the bread basket with butter and jalapeño rellenos which were delicious! Reminiscent of a jalapeño popper but classier. We also split a salad for the second course, and it came with a creamy red chile dressing which I had never had before, but it was delicious. For the main, I had the cacio e Pepe pasta which was delicious. My husband had the duck which was perfectly cooked and served with a yummy sauce and a side of potatoes. For dessert, we split the chocolate blackout cake. It was actually black and beautiful to look at. My husband & I go to dinner with another couple who also live in Albuquerque once or twice a month. We all live to try restaurants we haven't been to before in Albuquerque & Santa Fe. Last night we went to Forty Nine Forty. The experience was exceptional. First the ambience is very calming. Other patrons were clearly enjoying themselves. Our server provider excellent service & considering we had a list of needs he did a great job of getting everything right. The food was an experience. Starting with the bread basket right through to dessert. I had the duck. It was tender and extremely flavorful. My salad was simple & satisfying. I had no room for dessert, but when our server mentioned blackout cake I had to try it. It was soooo good. Moist and satisfying that chocolate love of mine. I can't say enough, how this was the worst dining experience in my whole life. The service was atrocious. The staff was very rude. The food was very late. It took four hours for our meal and everything was wrong about every order. We were with eight people. Do not believe ANY good reviews. It was entirely disappointing in every way. there are too many details to fill in, but this was for my mother's birthday and it was embarrassing, and I was shocked. We had dinner last night at 4940. This was not our first time there but it was our last. The service was questionable at best. We still have no idea who was supposed to be waiting on our table. We never had water refilled and no one bothered to check with us during our entree. When we were finished and no one still came to the table, I stacked our plates on the unoccupied table next to us. Someone picked them up but still said nothing. Finally a waitress came by and asked if anyone had talked to us about dessert. I told her no one spoke to us about anything. At that point, she apologized, spoke with some other employees and then returned to us explaining there had been a mix up and our check would be adjusted. Amazing! 4940 is a simply amazing! Visited for Sat night reservation... suggest you make reservations as the dining room is quite intimate, I want to say only seating about 10 tables at a time. They have an outdoor patio as well a lounge area where we sat for cocktails while waiting for our table. The place is very well designed and decorated, upscale decor with great color choices. I love the tile used in the bar and the restaurant just feels super classy! The wait staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and diligent in explaining each dish; their words made us want to try more and more! Table for 4, we tried a bit of everything starting with apps and salads, all perfectly seasoned and dressed; super fresh and absolutely lovely! Also decided to try all different mains and every plate was superb! The kitchen was also accommodating of a dairy allergy altho no dairy free option for dessert which was a bummer. Tried two dessert choices and both were delicious... adult after dinner drinks and coffee yummy too! They offer brunch on Sundays with an equally amazing menu so will definitely return soon for that! One tip... every plate is prepared fresh upon order so don't be in a hurry as it does take some time between courses. We actually wanted to take our time and visit so this worked well for us. I've reviewed dinner but need to review brunch! This brunch was an absolute triumph! I was thrilled to hear that they had just debuted a new brunch menu (not because it wasn't already perfect before, but while some restaurants fail on change, Restaurant Forty Nine Forty thrives). The breakfast burrito with red and green chile was a revelation. The red chile itself was a masterpiece, coming dangerously close to rivaling my mom's (and hers is the gold standard!). The combination of ground beef, potatoes, and eggs was perfectly balanced. The blue corn piñon pancakes were a work of art and bursting with flavor. The maple syrup and fresh berry jam were the cherry on top. I can't wait to bring my dad here, as these are his ultimate breakfast goal. The pineapple mimosa was expertly crafted, exactly to my liking. The service was amazing, as always, and the atmosphere was perfect. Overall, it was an incredible brunch experience. We are so lucky to have such a gem in Corrales. I declare it the best restaurant in Albuquerque and its suburbs. read more

This was our third attempt at fine dining in Albuquerque, and we finally found a winner at Forty Nine Forty. The food was delicious, and it's quite clear that the chef has a point of view, as every dish was both layered with flavor and balanced. The staff was also quite attentive and considerate. Our waiter was so enamored with the beet soup special that I decided to give it a try even though I'm not a huge fan of beets. It was indeed delicious with unexpected flavors of umami from the egg and heat from the horseradish. I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu. read more

I searched for a place that I had not been before and this came up as an option through searching here on yelp. All I can say is wow. We originally came here for Sunday brunch with my husband and my mother-in-law. We had wonderful food and a very great waiter. I had the blue corn cake which comes with bacon and two perfectly poached eggs, which was super yummy. We also got the bread basket, which had one biscuit, one cheddar green chile biscuit, and one lemon poppyseed scone. We greatly enjoyed those and split them equally. My mother-in-law had the lemon ricotta pancakes, which were just gorgeous and light and very tasty. She also got a side of the Wagyu beef sausage, which is just insane and wonderful. My husband got the traditional breakfast which came with eggs, beans, potatoes, the Wagyu, beef sausage, and toast. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food. The space that this restaurant is in is really cute as well. The dining area is cozy and eclectic. There's outside seating and you can also sit inside the market which has a whole bunch of neat food items to buy as well as some lovely glass pitchers and baskets and a whole bunch of fun things. We also came for dinner just this past Friday night and enjoyed the summer menu that goes until the end of September. We had a lovely bottle of Malbec and I had the heirloom tomato salad which was two die for with fresh heirloom tomatoes, and butter lettuce from just down the road. My husband had the wedge salad and really enjoyed it. For dinner my husband had the. SMOKED CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF PICANHA, which he enjoyed quite a lot. And I had the RICOTTA MUSHROOM TORTELLINI that was so fresh and wonderful. I wanted to eat it a second time. We also went ahead and ordered two of the daily housemade desserts. One was a chocolate cake that they described as mahogany and was just phenomenal. It had a chocolate butter finish that was so delicious I almost bought a second one to take home (should have). We also had the limoncello tiramisu, which was bright and tangy and super good. Our waiter, Kyle, was kind, talkative and very helpful with menu items and selecting the wine. He also told some funny jokes. He was kind enough to introduce himself at the end of the meal and shake both our hands. We felt important and that it made a difference that we were there. I'm so happy to have such a lovely place to go eat and have a meal that is not only beautifully presented but very very good. I have three more reservations coming up and I can't wait. We were seated tonight at 6 pm. It took over 2 hours to get our entry's. Ordered drinks for 4 and that took almost 30 minutes. Appetizers took over an hour. Had to ask waiter for our salad after an hour and 20 minutes. We were celebrating our daughter's 35th birthday with our son in law. When I told the waiter we arrived at 6 pm and it's now 7:45 he was indifferent and couldn't handle the fact that he screwed up. Manager came over once we received our entry's (now it was 8:30). She gave us 25% of our meal. Very disappointing in that we have always held this place in high regard. Not sure what happened but it appears they have slipped. Not worth the drive to Corrales for us anymore. Very bad experience and it was not handled well by staff or management. Won't be back. read more

Corrales has themselves a new gem There are not a lot of restaurants I will cross the Rio Grande in rush hour traffic for - but I'll sit in 45 min of bumper to bumper traffic for this dining experience any day of the week. A small, limited number of tables makes a very intimate experience. You can see the kitchen and bar from any table. Low light fine dining ambiance with friendly staff. The drinks were lovely. We had the lemon and espresso martinis as well as the Italian margarita special for the night 10/10 no notes The food was delightful. The cauliflower soup was absolute perfection. Sometimes simple really is best. Spotlight shout out to the flan. Everyone makes it so differently I'm always hesitant to order it... I've never been so thrilled. Bottom line: Eat here! My husband and I enjoyed a bottle of champagne, the steak tartare (which is dairy free and phenomenal), the aged ribeye without the sauce (because I'm allergic to whey and casein) which was topped with perfectly cooked mushrooms. Yum. The steak was perfect and didn't need the sauce. We also shared the Brussel sprouts which were pretty damn tasty! Brussel sprouts are one of those veggies that can be easily ruined but these were perfectly cooked AND perfectly seasoned. Service: Our waiter was the best! The owner came over because of my food allergies (which the waiter ensured to list on our ticket) and they made me feel like I mattered! The executive chef can be seen at the food window and he was diligently inspecting food. It was a great experience to watch. He cares and it shows! Rant: Sometimes with food allergies (mine are recently discovered) restaurants aren't always good about it or they don't take it seriously. Unfortunately, my food allergies are severe and I need an epi pen. Huge Compliment: So rejoice foodies with food allergies, this place is a class act and they CARE! Only one opportunity: Space. We had brunch here today and I'm totally charmed by the ambiance. The front half of this cozy restaurant is a former food shop and the back half is a top notch bar and eatery. So we got there about 8 minutes before our reservation and walked around the shop for a bit (called Fancies) and sized up the bakery options... quickly decided to get a few options to go. They look amazing (a cheesecake and a lemon tart) but we have not tried them yet. Once we were seated our server quickly suggested a mimosa, which is the fast way to my heart. My husband was a harder nut to crack and held out for the Bourbon Manhattan. Both were lovely. We ordered the bread basket to share, along with the eggs Benedict and the chicken and waffles. The basket comes with a top-notch croissant along with two scones (cranberry orange and green chile cheddar) and a potato roll. That was my first mistake. We filled UP. So when our entrees came we were pretty full. I still managed to eat half my Benedict, which is not an easy dish to do well. They did it well: lots of runny yolk, some crust/crunch of the muffin and a smooth, creamy sauce. Delish. My husband gave two thumbs up for the chicken (he said it had almost an Asian crunch/batter to it) and the savory waffles. And he had a second Manhattan, which isn't common. Service was low key, yet prompt. And the atmosphere was perfect for a leisurely Sunday morning-turned-afternoon. My only quibble would be that we didn't love the weird chairs, which are beautiful (leather-lined) but small with a weird tilt back. But that's a small quibble. We will be back. Very intimate in the dining room, vs the casual atmosphere in the bakery/market side. And the noice level was very manageable. We absolutely loved it. List of what we had: Drinks were the Lavender Limoncello Martini for me. I have a major aversion to sweet mixed drinks, so took our waiter's suggestion. And it was spot on. So tart and delicious. I savored it slowly despite wanting to drink it down much quicker. Up in Smoke for my husband, made off menu with a special limited rye they were excited to have. He loved it so much, he had the same rye, neat, to sip with dessert. We also shared a glass of Pinot Noir. If only I could remember the name. It was the most expensive glass we have ever ordered out, at $24. Will need to go back or call and find out because it was special. Perhaps buying a bottle won't hit the pocketbook quite as hard. Food consisted of the Ahi Tuna Cigar for the starter. The presentation and flavor were a delight. We shared the green chile grits as a side to our meals. Really yummy. I had the Roasted Sea Bass. Quite possible the best fish I have ever had in a restaurant. So buttery and tender, with a nice crisp sear. So so good. My husband had the Pork Katsu. That was really delicious as well, but I favored my dish. For dessert we had the red velvet cake. To be honest, that's the only dish that I thought was just ok. Meh. Next time I'll try something different. I saw a key lime tart at the next table and thought that looked good. Not only was our waiter very attentive, but the entire staff was. We felt like royalty. To sum it all up, this was incredible food and we loved the entire experience. We will be back for sure. But at the price point it's at, it isn't an every day restaurant. We went early upon opening on a Wednesday, hardly anyone there, but shortly after people started showing up. We had the strawberry crush and the bourbon Manhattan, FULL of flavor and not sweet at all or over powering. We both don't like sweet drinks. My bf is Brazilian so he got the picanha and he liked it but since he's from Brazil he knows how it should be made and he said they cut off the fat and it could have came with more fat. It was served with fresh tortillas, yum. I got the miso cod and it was delicious well made fish full of flavor and not fishy. Ordered the polenta , asparagus, and fries as sides and they were okay. Nothing wow about it. Also had the bone marrow and it was just okay Ive had better.Ordered the olive oil cake and it was also okay maybe just not for me. I did appreciate it wasn't too sweet. So because I wasn't wowed by all the dishes I docked a star due to it being a pretty pricey place. I think we spent over 200$. I would go back though especially to have drinks and a small dish but I would give another dinner a try and I'm interested in trying their brunch. We had dinner at Forty Nine Forty last Saturday. We went because we wanted fish, and the sea bass is prominently displayed on their website. They didn't have sea bass or any other light fish. They had a dense fish that we did not want. The fry bread appetizer was good. We were told it would taste like bahn Mi, and it did. It was quite good. We ordered the pork and polenta, which was delightfully fork tender. The clunker was the eggplant steak. It came with miso on top. It was too salty. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he said, well that's the miso. I understand miso is salty, but half as much would have made this a better dish. read more

This was a birthday dinner with my friend. She had the steak, I had the sea bass, we split the wedge salad and Brussel sprouts. The wedge was the best we've tasted, ever. The sprouts were crisp and sweet. The steak was cooked to perfection and you could cut with a butter knife. The bass was so sweet and flaky. We decided to try Forty Nine Forty on a Saturday night last minute and were able to be seated very shortly after arriving in the marketplace section. The service was great, with several different people noticing our lamp dying twice and switching it out for us, clearing plates frequently and keeping water filled. All of the food was excellent and we highly enjoyed the meal and cocktails. We had the smoked picanha and the Moroccan spiced Lamb shank. This is my new favorite restaurant in the greater Albuquerque area. Service was lovely and very eager to please. The wine list has multiple ( 6 in the reds alone, not just a token one) selections from local and New Mexico wineries. The food was incredible, so much so I forgot to take pictures. Fish are flown in regularly. Normally we are not fans of tres leches cake as it's too sweet, but this restaurant's version is perfectly balanced. I can't wait to go back. My husband and I had dinner here last night (July 2024) and I can't say enough about it. We sat outside on the beautiful patio. It's mostly covered with a roof over one section and a large tree over the other. Although we chose to sit outside, we did see both the dining room and the marketplace and they looked lovely. We started with a wedge salad split between us. Even split it was a very generous portion. The toppings were delicious. For entrees I had the sea bass and my husband had the angus beef pichana. Both were excellent. The sea bass was so flaky and tender. The beef was perfectly cooked at medium. For dessert we had the limoncello tiramisu. I could have eaten several. We made a reservation for my husbands birthday. Arrived and were told we would need to wait and could look around the shop area. We walked around and, after running out of things to look at, stopped at a table a bit out of the way to wait. The hostess came up and walked us around the shop to then take us back to the table we had been waiting at and told us this was our seat. Ok - this was odd. We asked if we were being seated out of the main dining area because we were not "dressed up" and we had younger kids. The hostess laughed and didn't answer - I'm assuming our party had too many people to fit in the tiny dining area, however we were not given an explanation. It was a major let down because it was not the nice dining experience we were hoping for given the occasion. We pushed past this and then we met our server - who was the bartender. So now we are not in the main dining area and we have the bartender. I can see the level of care and service going down before my eyes. The bartender was very awkward and proceeded to tell us if the menu wasn't to our liking he could get us a "burger" or "some sort of pasta" - we all felt awkward. Even our kids - who are usually oblivious during these situations. Our kids are accustomed to eating all sorts of foods - we've been to super nice restaurants all over the world - but I guess we didn't look the part. We decided to just leave. I stopped at the hostess stand to make sure we wouldn't be charged for this catastrophe of a dining experience (you have to reserve with a credit card) and they didn't even ask why we were leaving. I guess you only ask that question if you care. Needless to say we would never return here. Corrales, Albuquerque and Santa Fe have many comparable level dining options and we will be giving those establishments our business moving forward. read more
