This place is BUSSIN (that means excellent). So much food, so inexpensive, AND I have been strictly gluten-free for 6 years--not Celiac--and can safely eat the chicken shawarma plate (no pita) and grape leaves. The chef told me no pita and no tabouleh, but that the falafel is also GF. Definitely other non-gf things on the menu, but I didn't ask about those. I would not eat here if I had Celiac because of the cross-contamination risk. The two men who work in the restaurant are very nice, but speak little English. The chef, who told me about gluten, speaks better English, but came in from some place next door. He knows about the ingredients, but isn't in the restaurant all the time. BUT THIS WAS ONLY $16.30! Although the pita is clearly outsourced, the whole sandwich tasted very fresh. Inside were two or three large, crispy, tasty falafel balls, with abundant tomato and lettuce. Compared to Mamoun's Falafel, I think Heights Falafel's falafel sandwich is better--it's heftier, fresher, and tastier than the more slapdash and smaller item from Mamoun's. Quality fresh ingredients but flavor has so much potential to be better. Everything was bland. The rice was too soft and wet. The chicken was dry and missing tons of flavor. The hummus was very diluted and mediocre at best. I thought perhaps drenching the chicken in hummus would be more enjoyable but it only made the chicken cold and didn't help much in flavor. I don't usually enjoy salad but this time, I needed more salad to balance out the dry meal.
