Helen's Greenhouse / Farm stand has colorful roadside signs beckoning you to pull over while on your way to the North Fork, or Briermere's etc. Worth a trip to check it out. Have been back a few times since. Once pulled in off the road... its such a lovely country farm with a big enclosed farm stand. Outside find lots of cheerful displays of seasonal farm items. Hay, tractors, pumpkins when in season, flowers and more. They have a nice selection of their own grown fruit and vegetables and carry other local farms produce as well. They have small signs clearly stating local, or "our own" which are always a treat to have direct from the farm. Helen's makes pies too. It's also nearby Brierrmere's down the block. The night before Thanksgiving, Helen's offered an alternative option to the long lines for pies. In summer I once tried a mixed berry pie. This time tried an apple and pumpkin. This was the year for less baking and smaller lines... this made it easy. Much appreciated. Pies seemed not too homemade. Crisp sliced apple with the same gel like cinnamon on most of the apple pies out here. Not too homemade tasting. Seemed more commercial frozen and bake. So for true homemade pies, try nearby Junda's or Briermere. For an ok assortment of grab and go pie, this worked. The lady's are sort of pleasant but leaning more toward efficient and courteous. Not the warmest vibe here on different visits. No one seems genuinely friendly like you might want at a small town shop. Once asked about a pie, and one woman sort of mocked my question joking "its a fruit pie" slightly sarcastic. The cashier on a another visit wouldn't show a pie, by opening a box citing the owners rules. So took my chances. Lol. That shouldn't deter you, its clean, fresh and pretty to look at. We drove here from 20 miles away and arrived within 5 mins of closing. They refused to let us in or purchase anything. Even though we promised to be quick. While Helen's was within its rights to do so, we will never go back. Had they stayed open an extra 5 minutes, we would have gladly made it worth their while. read more

I come here every year. It's a great spot for pumpkin pickin' They have a large property with lots of pumpkins. Across the road is their barn filled with fresh fruits and veggies from the farm. Also cider, home made pies and fresh flowers! read more

I went to Helen's Greenhouse looking for fresh white corn. To my surprise they had a table dedicated to white corn. It was marked $7.50 a dozen, which is more than I have ever paid for corn. I got home, put on a pot of water and waited till it was read to eat. I buttered it up and took my first bite.... it was wrinkled, soggy, and tasted like a mouthful of starch. Totally old corn..for $7.50 a dozen. What a waste!!! Then I cut up the red peppers that the lady said was so sweet. They were moldy inside. Need I say more! Don't waste your money. This is a farm stand with old, reject produce that should only be used to turn back into the soil. read more

I want to make clear - this review is for the farmstead with bakery located on the east side of Union Avenue just off Route 105. The correct address is something like 1061 Union Avenue according to both Bing and Google maps. The 987 Union address is for a nursery/greenhouse a short distance south on the west side of Union. Both are operated by the same family. Stumbled on Helen's Greenhouse fall of 2014. After an eye doc appointment in Riverhead I'd decided to hit a well known farm stand and bakery on Sound Avenue, and on the way noticed a sign for Helen's Pumpkin Patch. So, I stopped in. On that first visit I only bought produce, and continued on to get my pies at the other place. On subsequent visits I've bought my pies here. Much (but not all) of the produce they sell is not only local grown, it is grown on their own farmland. They have by far the best assortment of fresh produce I have seen on Long Island. And the pies? Fantastic! As to the staff, the ones I've dealt with are friendly, courteous, and they know their products. On two of my visits I've been taken care of by the baker (Helen's daughter-in-law if I heard right), and my last visit I was helped by the owner.... yes, there is a Helen at Helen's Greenhouse (or Pumpkin Patch). read more

Yesterday was our annual Pumpkin picking event with our family ~ we have been coming to Helen's for about 17 years we figured out~ yesterday was our last time. over the passed couple of years the prices have gone up annually- $100 for full wheelbarrow- this year $120~ we took our chances and ended up saving $20 just paying by weight~ we then walked over to the market and spent $80 when members of our family stopped us saying we can no longer sit at a table to eat without paying an additional $15 per person!!! Helen's Greenhouse is an idyllic farm with farm animals and barn. They have a large variety of plants at reasonable prices. It has many acres of scenic farm land. It is like stepping back in time. A lovely experience...it is so peaceful and tranquil. I love going there. and always find lovely healthy plants. read more

First time ever leaving a bad review. I never met such a horrible group of people. A have a legal service dog & was turned away...even though they have a sign that only service dogs are allowed. Just wanted to pick pumpkins with my family with my service dog. Not sure if it was because we were the only people of color or they just wanted to be horrible. Nice "home grown" vegetables, but keep away from the baked goods. The individually wrapped muffins were mushy and overly sweet, something you would pick up at 7-11 for $3.00 each.The spinach/swiss quiche was repulsive...filled with watery (frozen?) spinach with a soggy crust and barely any cheese or flavor for $20.00. Maybe if they let people look at the product before purchasing, the "baker" would have to shape up! Shame on you, Helen. Go to Hallock's.. fantastic quiche and pies that you can actually SEE before buying. read more

Nice big farm complete with a corn maze, a "U-pick" pumpkin patch, face painting, farm fresh produce, hay rides, donkeys and baked goods. October is the busiest month and a great visit during peak foliage. I like picking up $1 pumpkins and apple cider doughnuts when I'm here. read more
