So, I call them in order to pay my bill. I can only use there system choice 1. Credit card yes, American Express, discovery , master card, visa. But, I can only " ONLY " use their electronic computer system. Get this you will be charge 5.00 not once to the bill. But, every time you pay. So, if I pay with my credit card that 5x 12 month = 60.00 every year. 2. So, my other option is my checking account , and I don't want to use that. Either way HELIX Water you are getting you money. Way so many rules. Give the customer more choices .... We don't all live or have checking accounts. 3 My 3rd choice is bill pay, which mean I have to remember to pay it on a certain date every time. 4. We'll just found out that they lied to me 10 years ago about moving the water line on our street, there newest response is not on a list and nothing planned, so to turn off the water I have to hike up a hill on other peoples property a half mile away, this is ridiculous for the incredible high prices we pay...time to vote out the board! read more

We were having trouble with our water pressure so we called Helix. They sent out Chris & Josh the next day. Seems it is our water pressure gauge. The two techs were amazing. They spent a lot of time with us explaining the necessary repair, how to get the parts and do it ourselves if we so chose-- We won't but it is good to know what to expect from whomever we call to do it. Sometimes I just keep pressing refresh or other random pages on their website to see if I can get something to work and suddenly it will work fine. I deal with a lot of different personalities in my lifetime but Helix Water employees that I came in contact with are the rudest of them all. Here's my story. I called to inform them that a building had very very very low water pressure (drips) and if they can send someone out. I also told this lady (operations who answered the phone twice) that I've already had a plumber inform me that it is Helix Water's responsibility because it's from the meter on. (I hope that makes sense) The lady on the phone tried to tell me that it sounds like a pressure regulator and that they don't change that and our plumbers has to do it. I was very adamant that she first sends over one of her technicians to look at their valve. She then said that there's no problem and that her reader says the building is getting 110 PSI. Whatever, I continued to say she needs to send someone here to confirm that and not just look at her reader. Guess what? The technician who came here said that "their VALVE" was half way shut. It was not the plumber or maintenance staff that touched it as they know better not to touch Helix' meter because the valve can end up breaking and we don't want to be responsible for that. So we don't know who touched it. Even the technician was a jerk and accused the plumber and maintenance manager for touching their property. He got everyone angry because of his ugly attitude. Unfortunately, being a resident in East County, we still have to use their water and services. They suck and I hope one day these workers will learn how to be nicer. read more

Just bought a house in La Mesa, and already having problems with this company. Set up a service start date. NO email, just a confirmation number. Okay, I assume things will be fine. Supposed to have house and carpet cleaners over today - water isn't on. My husband calls, and they claim that we never sent over the things they'd requested. WHAT things they'd requested? NO phone call, NO email - and I have checked in Spam and In Promotions and all other possible folders. read more

It's outrageous that Helix charges almost $50 every 2 months to maintain our water. What kind of treatments are they really doing considering we have hard water running through the meter. Here is my experience.... your people trespass on our property (and not to read the meter but due to work being done on on street that we are not even made aware of in advance despite it be RIGHT in front of our house), you tie your signs to our fence near the work-site, water gets turned off without 24 hour prior notice, water comes back up on and now one of our facets isn't working. A huge water rate hike from a board that already made up their mind BEFORE the public meeting. A level 2 drought from a district that isn't even in a drought. A staff that is way over paid and needed an outside service to analyze the budget. All from a non profit organization. This screams "screwed" in terms of the customers. The board and staff need an overhaul. There were only 2 board members who cared about the consumer. Of the 5 we need to vote out DeAna Verbeke, John Linden & Chuck Muse. Of course we can only "vote" on 1, what a laugh. What about prop 218 that WE voted in. Oh, they just threw that out the window. I have another year to reside in my home. I will sell it and run from this district. Drought? All of you that voted for Brown, we thank you for this mess. Don't like it? I see at least 15 class action lawsuits against water districts with tiered water structure. They can't charge more than it costs to supply. I say we all get together and sue them sane! read more

Terrible customer service, not willing to work with customers financially for this essential utility without competition. Helix will shut your utility off on the due date and will also asses a "deposit" to restore service that is more than the largest bill you've assessed during your account lifetime. There is another review here from a 70 year old woman that was gouged in the very same manner. Rancho San Diego needs a water utility alternative. They are one of the worst water districts around and it is crap you have to get stuck with them I thought monopolies were illegal. My wife's purse got stolen and we had a ton of stuff on auto pay. We contacted all of our accounts including them and of course they said okay. So what do they do they tried to take money out of an account that was closed, no crap there is no more in there. So we contacted them again and played them over the phone. Now I have to pay money for a returned check and a fee of $47 because someone put a lock on our water. End result I have to pay even more money now for their mistake and I have to suffer what a scam. Feeling kinda cute and see what a lawyer has to say about them strong arming people. Be careful with them apparently they dont have to give you warning about shutting your water off. read more

Here we are facing another water shortage and being told basically stop watering. First. Stop all building permits for new housing. Second. Stop your water main breaks. Third. When I stop using my water don't come back at me with, "we are losing revenue because no one is using water so we are raising your rates again." Fourth. Quit giving 80% of our water to farmers who waste the water in trench flooding irragation. Really they did this in the Stone Age. Because I own a house you can decriminate against me for using too much water according to you. But a Renter in an Apartment can let the water run 24/7 without anyone saying a word. Helix water district is the worst! I bought a house in April, but wasn't able to move in until July. Somehow during the 3 months when NO ONE was living in the house we racked up a 200 dollar bill. Then for the month of July they said we used 85 units of water, a nice 600 dollar bill. So I asked them to check their meter. They tell me I have to pay for them to come check their own meter. WTF is that? They have a nice racket going on. They can pretty much charge you whatever they want to and you have to pay. There are no other options for water and they know it! What a bunch of crooks. I'm also reporting the to the BBB. read more

The main reason to never move to La Mesa! They are absolutely terrible!!!!! You will religioulsy hear from them on two occasions. The first being when it takes them a full week to find your payment, and the second is the annual "we're raising your rates again" notice. Terrible customer service and outrageous water fees! We went on a tour of the plant in Lakeside with my daughter's 5th grade class. Surprisingly, it was fantastic! I thought I was gonna be bored out of my mind. Not so! They have it set up so great. I live alone, I'm 71, work part time and don't make enough money to meet Helix Money Monger's demands. My dishwasher hasn't worked in years so I pile them up. The sink in the garage overflows so don't use my washing machine. My lawn is dead so no watering. I do fast aerobic showers every other day. My bill was $422.00 for 2 months. They shut my water off today eventhough I've been a customer since 1968. I've gone into their office to try and explain that I'm trying and not ever going to leave town owing them and that it's hard since my husband died and I ashamedly started crying. "To get your service turned back on ma'am we'll need at least half of the balance". Cold as ice. They don't care. So, rather than have a decent Thanksgiving I've put every cent I have into getting my water turned back on. Happy Holidays to the shysters at Helix Water. I think I'm required to give a rating. Friendly folk, but policies suck. No advance notices. Also, if something isn't working after they turn the water off and on, they claim no fault for "internal house" plumbing. Then here's the kicker, they can't have anyone come into your home because of liability. Wait? Doesn't Cox Cable, Direct TV and others come into the house without issue? I smell BS. I returned home last night to find that my water was shut off. I immediately phoned the emergency line requesting an explanation for why it was turned off. I was informed that they did not receive my check in the mail for payment and it was the reason for the cut off. I asked "AT WHAT POINT DO YOU NOTIFY YOUR CUSTOMERS THAT EITHER THEY ARE LATE OR PROVIDE A SHUT OFF NOTICE???????? i asked that it be turned on immediately as I have a child and a senior Im caring for right now. The customer service rep forwarded my request to another person and explained that someone will call back to help but likely will not re-establish the water. So I ended up bringing my godchild to my brothers home so he can have access to water, then drove to the store for gallons of water for cooking and bathing my grandmother.About 30 mins later I received a call back from a man who simply stated " oh we hear that all the time" and explained that there was nothing he could do because it is after hours. He stated if you call back in the morning and make a payment then we can turn it back on. Of course , I called early in the morning (today) and made the payment. It is 8:08am and it is still not on. Yet Helix supervisor has the time to call me at 8:00am to say "Hey thanks for your payment, now you will be assessed a $150 charge to turn it back on.... oh and don't worry it will be on your next bill. " Well isn't this great service to provide to a loyal, consistent and timely consumer ?" I am beyond furious that 1) my check is somewhere in the community all while I thought it was received by Helix because I received NO notification of a late bill. 2) I did NOT receive a cut off notice 3) I now have to contact my bank and search to put a stop payment, 4)both representative lied and stated that the automatic system phoned me and a left a message AND that there is a note on my account that a customer service person called and spoke with me. No one called and no messages left on my cell phone. (I just received a call from a supervisor while writing this to inform me that there is a $150 cut off fee) so in addition to the payment that I JUST MADE , I now have to pay an ADDITIONAL 150 due to their poor customer service. This is OUTRAGEOUS. We definitely need another Water company in the area so that customers can have options and not be limited to company that clearly has no concern or care for quality service...ONLY for BILLING. If I can rate no stars I definitely would!!!!!!!!! What do we (consumers) need to do to get a competitor??????????????? Management should definitely update their policies and procedures to improve the communication and quality of service. read more

If you want to know why Helix Water District needs a rate increase, look at Transparent California and see what they pay their employees. Based on this report, the lowest paid person on the list makes over $127,000 per year. Why should we agree to a 5 year increase when we don't know how much rain is coming this winter, or next, etc. If we get greater than normal rainfall in the next 5 years, does that mean Helix is going to give us a rebate or refund? I doubt it. Speaking of which, has Helix ever reduced their rates?, has anyone at Helix ever offered to take a cut in salary to offset the increase costs? We're asked to cut back on the use of water and let our lawns die, then Helix wants to stick it to us because they can't make a profit? Is Helix going to give us our money back for our investment in our landscaping? If you're as mad as I am about this I would suggest you go to the hearing on October 7th. read more

Like most residents I am not surprised but ticked off as heck with the rate increase when Lugo, the GM makes $209K a year and most of their employees make 6 figure incomes with $40K-$60K benefit packages every year. They don't answer questions and are unwilling to come out to figure where my second meter that I pay $58 extra a month for (an empty lot) is used for. Ridiculous.
