I've been coming to this bakery since 1990 and 2026 was the first year to ever have such disappointment with this trip. It'd been several years since my last visit (3?) First, they had a complimentary parking lot, if you purchased you didn't have a parking fee. It was blocked with a pylon when I was there-empty lot. When I said something in the shop, they didn't know and didn't care. It sat empty while there was a festival in town! I added a $10 parking fee to my pick-up order in & out by having to pay for space elsewhere. Second I was shocked at a $45 total pastry fee for one creme-filled pastry, 4 kourabedies, 1 saragli, 3 pistachio baklava, 1 kataifi. All the "honey" ones were so dripping in honey they were difficult to eat, tasted far too sweet and all tasted alike. The people were unfriendly, running you through like cattle and impatient to explain anything. I didn't get a good look at everything due to the poor management (good thing? since I was broke!) I skipped breads entirely and was out of sorts to bother with lunch at the restaurant. I got out of Tarpon Springs quickly to decompress. Poor experience. Not sure if it'll ever be worth the drive again...$24 in gas, $10 in parking & $45 in pastry costs...mighty expensive treat. read more

We came to visit Tarpon Springs this weekend because neither I nor my husband had ever been here despite living in Florida for about 30 years. It was a nice surprise. We had lunch but walked around the cute little sponge docks area both before and after lunch. This bakery caught my eye and I decided to stop in after lunch. It is a pretty big space with tons of cases filled with delicious looking bakery items. I have always been a fan of baklava so I decided to get the twelve piece assorted package of tradional Greek pastries. There were two pieces of baklava and they were delicious. The other items were similar items with most having a combination of nuts, honey, cinnamon, coconut, and chocolate. Definitely worth the price of twenty dollars. We stop in at Hellas Bakery every time we are in Tarpon Springs, how could you not! The choices of cakes, pastries, and puddings is crazy, it's so hard to decide, but don't worry there is not a bad choice. They also sell bread, muffins and you can even get an ice cream cone if you prefer. I have been coming to the bakery since 2009 and I used to love the pastries. Can't say the same anymore. First, the sizes of the pastries (specially the greek ones) have been cut to almost half the size. And the prices are outrageous! They have almost doubled their prices. Second, the quality of the pastries have also gone down. For example; they are overly sweet and no special taste to them as before. Just a lump of sugar. I ordered today 4 different pastries including 2 greek ones. They just tasted like sugar. Too, too sweet. Their coffee is still good. Hella's is the best bakery and has so many delicious treats - it is so hard to make a decision, but this is why it's good to go with a group of people because you can order a lot of items and share! When we arrived, there was not much of a line and we were able to order pretty quickly. We ordered the Napoleon, the Black Forest cake and a strawberry mousse cake. Everything was plated quickly and we were all able to enjoy a few bites of each. I also had my pup with me, so he was happy with his pup cup (which was as big as he is)! They really do take good care of pups here too! Once we were done with our first round, we actually needed more! So we asked for the coconut cake and I really wanted some ice cream! If you find yourself at the Sponge Docks you are going to want to visit Hella's, an amazing one of a kind Greek bakery. The joy you get from visiting Hella's is thanks to Bob and Maria Karterouliotis. In the summer of 1969 the couple immigrated from Sparta, Greece, to the United States where they settled in Chicago and opened the original Hellas Bakery. As their success grew, they opened additional bakeries around the Chicago area. In 1983 the Karterouliotis family moved to Florida and opened a Hella's in Clearwater. In 1985 Hella;s opened in Tarpon Springs on the Sponge Docks and it is still run by generations of the Karterouliotis family. I visited the bakery for a sweet treat but they also operate a restaurant next door. Hellas has a staggering selection of Greek pastries, coffees, and all kinds of desserts. They are famous for their baklava and my friend swears that their Greek pastries are the best but I was in a cannoli mood. Prepare for large crowds but they whip through them quickly. If your looking for a sweet treat look no further than Hellas Bakery. If you cant find something there to satisfy the sweet tooth then keep on walking. This Greek bakery has everything you can imagine and then some, from the most delicious looking Pasta ( Greek word for cake), cookies, pastries and ice cream. As soon as you walk into the bakery enter the line to order even if you are wanting ice cream you must use the line with the red ropes. Once in line you can see the case of pastries and decide what to oder once you are the front of the line. One of the employees will take your order and you can pay them with the little electric machine or pay at the register. I recommend paying at the register as I paid with the machine and my order was lost and was over 15 minutes and me asking where my order was for it to be filled. Ordered the Strawberry Kok and Oreo Pasta. The Strawberry Kok was not very sweet and without the Strawberry glaze didn't have much Strawberry flavoring and would not order this dessert again. The Oreo Pasta (Cake) did taste like Oreo's but again not very sweet which was kind of nice. Huge selection of items from Greek Sweet Bread, eclairs and some type of cookie that kind of looks like poop!! I say be bold and order it! read more

Their ice creams are so unique and so tasty i ordered the "Moose Track" ice cream and it was on point! We also got the baklava cheesecake as well as the baklava variety plate to take home with us, everything was soo good. We've been coming here for years! After dinner, my sons would run to the bakery side to pick their dessert. And do they make great desserts! My wife and sister in law *love* the baklava cheesecake! For 25+ years, the still get the same meal and they share the same dessert. Me? I like to get desserts my Greek Grandma would have made. Normally, I'd order a piece of fresh baklava but I'm going simple and ordered a box of biscotti to go. Our server and I start talking, she asked me where I'm from. We were in the Tarpon Springs sponge docks area with out of town visitors and decided to checkout the bakery section of Hellas. Here are my ratings: Quality of drinks and food: good. For deserts, we tried their pistachio baklava and kunefe. The baklava was one of the best ones and had a perfect combination of nuttiness and crunch. The Kunefe was good as well but a little dry. We also ordered a cup of Greek coffee and strawberry milkshake. The coffee was good but about 1/4 of it was just coffee grounds sludge. The milkshake was okay and nothing memorable. Décor: pretty neat. I have never been to Greece but this is what I imagine the restaurants look like there. It was wall-to-wall mirrors had Greek style décor was everywhere. Cleanliness: good. The tables were being constantly cleaned. Service: okay. We kept seeing people constantly cutting in line after browsing the deserts. It was also confusing when sometimes the person taking your order was also the cashier whereas sometimes they were not. Price: expensive. The baklava was around $4.5 and the coffee was also around that price point. I thought this was a little higher than typical. If you're in the mood for some good Greek deserts and drinks with matching atmosphere then checkout Hellas. read more

We stopped in with our MN in-laws when they were visiting from out of town. We're from out of town as well and had never eaten here before. Our in-laws had the Gyros and loved them. We had the spanakopita and a shrimp dish. Spanakopita was delish as was the shrimp. Our waiter was cheerful. The service was great and the food at Hellas lived up to its well deserved reputation. The desserts are delicious. However the new system they're using of a couple of staff persons taking orders over a device, then you pay and get a receipt and wait.....and wait....and wait even when there were only 2 customers ahead of us is SLOW and inefficient. They had customers standing around wondering what they were waiting on. No one knew. Some cash paying lady we watched didn't pay but picked up her order. Neither cashier knew if she paid. It's chaos. Hopefully they get it straightened out or go back to the original way. They also need to take all the items stacked on the cold cases off. It's cluttered looking. This Greek bakery is in the heart of very busy downtown Tarpon Springs; it has been family-owned since 1970 & offers authentic Greek desserts. The bakery is attached to the restaurant and it is open 7 days weekly. I have visited this bakery approximately 6x over a handful of years; not once did I take home a bad pastry. The selection of authentic Greek pastries, cakes, cheesecakes, tarts, mousse, & other culinary creations is EXCELLENT-- so many from which to select! And there's even 14 flavors of ice-cream. The only downer I've found is that there's not one "sugar free" or "no sugar added" offering within the dessert and ice-cream cases. On this visit, we picked out 7 pastries to share; the bill was $31.75. Each dessert averaged $4.53. If you look @ the photos I posted, you'll likely understand why I'm OK w/ that:) Should you stop in, definitely select the Greek Cannoli over the Italian version. Better yet, choose both! Along w/ the Greek Cannoli, I especially loved the Cannoli Pasta; the Chocolate Raspberry Pasta; & the Greek Chocolate Mousse, but the Cream Horn w/ Bavarian Cream (from a previous visit) is my all time favorite. Wonderful staffer Chris's favorite is the Key Lime Tart (see pic); it definitely was g00d! I have yet to eat a bad dessert from Hella's. The selection does change, but the Greek Cannoli is a staple. Hella's can get very busy, but don't be dismayed if there's a crowd. There are always multiple staffers behind the counter & each is very good @ what s/he does-- everyone moves FAST! I've never experienced a long wait. Your desserts will be packed well inside a box. I've not arrived home w/ a squished pastry. Hella's interior has always been very clean. There are tables & booths should you wish to consume your pastries, etc. on-site; however, only once have I seen patrons eating inside. The decor is cute-- almost like one would see in an ice-cream shoppe from yesteryear. It's quite charming. It takes me approximately 50 minutes to drive to Hella's (a drive I make w/o hesitation). Parking will likely cost you (but not much); however, there are a few cost-free spots behind Hella's, as well as a few others specifically marked "For Takeout." (Check there first.) I've never spent more than five minutes looking for a parking spot. And not one has been far from the bakery. I do recommend this bakery. The fact that it has been open for 52 years speaks for itself. Whether you're vacationing in or around Tarpon Springs or just out for a drive in the area, STOP IN. You won't be disappointed.
