The design phase did take some time, but it was time very well spent. Once we finalized the design, everything moved at a great pace, and the execution was smooth and well coordinated. This was actually my second project with H&C Construction this year, and I am once again very pleased with the results. The fact that I chose to work with them a second time says a lot about my confidence in their team and the quality of their work. I would highly recommend H&C Construction to anyone considering a kitchen remodel. They are professional, organized, communicative, and committed to delivering quality work--and they made what can be a stressful process feel very well managed.

I did not have a good experience at all with this company. First, they changed project managers on…read moreme just before they came out to do that work without explanation. When the work started, they moved at a glacier pace with erratic attendance. There were days they did not show up at all, other days they would show up unexpectedly at 7am, and leave at 10am. This was never communicated with me. Next, mistakes started happening. They painted the walls the wrong color. They put up the shower door on the wrong side. They also put up the window blind backwards so I couldn't reach or use the rod to open and close it. After the shower door went up backwards, the project manager fired the workers, but the had no one to finish the work. When they finally came back to fix the shower tiles wrecked when the door went up on the wrong side, they didn't align the replacement tile patterns with each other so the pattern is disjointed and doesn't line up at all. The project manager told me it's not supposed to line up!? After complaining about it 3 times, they finally offered to replace the tiles. But they stalled on ordering them and now it's out of stock. There are also other problems - the shower faucets are not properly secured to the shower walls, the vanity light is separating from the wall and the light switch fixture is also separating from the wall. The floor tile is irregular with grout lines sometimes thick in places, other times nonexistent. Currently, they are not returning my calls or texts. I've even reached out to the owner who came out and promised to fix everything, but commented that I was overly concerned with "small" details. Now he has not returned my calls or texts about when he will come to fix things. Maybe I am concerned with details but I'd think that is common when paying 20k to have a bathroom redone according to an approved plan. At the very least, I expected that shower tile patterns would match up and that things would be well grouted or secured in shower and on walls. This was my first renovation in my first home and I'm so disappointed in how it turned out and how I was treated by the team. Also, this 2 week project took 5 and 1/2 weeks to get to where it is now. Overall the project was done carelessly with no attention to detail and with no acceptance of their mistakes and no attempt to repair the problems identified. I see they have had good reviews in the past, but my project did not go well at all. I would definitely recommend choosing another company. When I first complained they asked me not to write a bad review and I said that along as everything was fixed we had a deal. Nothing has been fixed and they are not communicating with me. I know have to either pay another company more money to fix their mistakes or take legal action to resolve the simple issues that could be easily fixed. If detail and having a project done to your liking is important I would not recommend H&C at all.

Based on my experience, without constant homeowner oversight, I believe I would have been left with a substandard finished product. My experience was a pattern of poor workmanship, poor judgment, repeated rework, property damage, and a serious lack of quality control. An entire outside rim joist was installed crooked and had to be redone. The railing was visibly crooked. They left the jobsite with the concrete in the condition shown in my photos. I had to go out while it was still workable and broom-finish it myself, but I was unable to edge it due to it being too cured at that point, and I still later had to have the concrete work corrected. Wire mesh remains exposed at the surface. The concrete requirements were written into my contract, yet I had to point those requirements out when the work didn't match what was contracted. I also dealt with drainage I had to dig up myself, concrete residue and staining on my asphalt, asphalt damage, jobsite messes, and work that repeatedly had to be corrected or redone. A relatively straightforward deck rebuild dragged on for about a month with an incredible amount of unnecessary rework. To their only credit, Grace Construction was generally willing to come back when I identified a problem. The problem was that, in my experience, their corrections too often led to another problem, another correction, or ultimately required a third party to correct the work. Being willing to fix mistakes is appreciated. Having to repeatedly fix the fixes is not quality control. They are more worried about other job sites instead of the one they are on. They will drag your work out to prioritize other things. There was plenty of lip service about quality and providing a great customer experience. My issue with owner Jay Colley and Nick, who was presented to me as their project manager, isn't personal--it's performance. I experienced repeated poor judgment and failure to catch obvious problems before I had to point them out myself. When the homeowner has to provide the quality control, that's a management failure, not a personality conflict. Grace Construction eventually tried to resolve the accumulated problems I considered acceptable. Despite everything, I was prepared to move on. Then they came back. During a return visit, Nick drove into the edge of the neighbors and left ruts in the lawn. I was ready to take my lumps and let everything go until Nick was sent to "oversee" the repair (whatever that means in the scope of this "company"?). That's when you will see pictures of the ruts left in my neighbor's yard, which Nick responded to with a sarcastic, dismissive attitude, as did Jay via text. He refused to answer the phone. Not that any of it needs explaining, but the neighbor had hired someone to come to his home and help with some street water diversion that was impacting his property. It had been there two days when nick drove over it. Again, to the point that a little situational awareness and attention to detail would avoid most of their problems. After everything else, another instance of carelessness with my property was the final straw. Everyone makes mistakes. This wasn't one mistake--it was a pattern. I have extensive photographs and communications documenting this experience. If you hire Grace Construction: watch everything. Check everything. Protect your property. Don't assume something was done correctly just because you're told it was. I would never hire Grace Construction again. The work seems to be fine, but there were a few finishing items that were not done. Communication was rather horrible, it took quite a time for some things to get done as they were waiting on things; but never reached out to give me updates despite parts of my house and floor being torn apart. Finishing work: Water had started peeling the drywall tape on various creases that should have been fixed with the initial repair, and was brought up but never done. Garage door no longer worked after leak, but was not fixed. Several sections of ceiling should have been torn down and included, but since a different company did the water damage removal Gardener's never saw the extent of the initial damage. It seems as though they do a lot of Condo/HOA work. This means that they always have work and don't need to be perfectionists for a contract. I would find someone else to do work in the future, but hopefully this is it for a while.

Of the four contractors contacted, Wesly responded quickly and was at our house the next day asking all the right questions. we also discussed two other projects, more in just passing, but interested in what she would come back with. Within a day, she came back with a series of quotes, one for the stair job we needed, which was very reasonable and for a design that worked very well. Her team showed up the next day and were efficient and very detailed. Our three step project was done in a day and looked great! Although we told Wesly the price on the other patio resurface project was a bit more than we were ready to take on, didn't stop her from finding another option that cut the cost using a ceramic tile that offered better wear, more color options and a design that better matched our house. We could afford that! We were also able to redo a ghastly concrete step from our den that a prior owner bought at Home Depot and dumped in place. Wasn't to code either. The Team was back out and did a marvelous job! They were there three days, morning to late evening getting the job done. The result updated the back of our house, the slate and brick step off the den was to code and the patio was comfortable to walk on and made my wife's patio set look really good.
