Over the past year and a half their prices have gone up over 70% and their donuts have gotten smaller. Ass those two together and that's a massive increase in price! Take a look at their cinnamon rolls that they sell in a four pack. They used to cover the rolls with icing. Now they barely cover the rolls themselves. Their quality has just gone downhill and their prices have just gotten ridiculous. Plus, if you don't get there early in the morning, like before 8 o'clock, they're out of many different types of donuts. It's sad when a business cheapen their own product and don't care about quality.They had a 70% increase, donuts are smaller and then they beg you and try to guilt you into giving them a tip if you pay by using a credit card .Sad. read more

I don't care if anybody says I still love their chocolate covered in yeast donuts, and I always will! The place is not changed in 100 years. It looks the same as it always has. It does kind of seem like there are less donuts than there used to be. The service is as adequate as it always has been. You don't really go in there to sit down and have an hour long session eating a doughnut - you go in to get your stuff and you get out. As long as they keep those chocolate covered yeast donuts then I'll be a happy camper. I rarely stop in there to get them, but when I do, I am one happy girl. read more

I visit Valparaiso from time to time for various reasons such as revisiting campus, meeting up with cousins, etc. It has always been my habit to check out a local bakery while in town. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and there were a good selection of donuts, Danish, cookies, and coffee cakes to choose from. I went with 6 donuts - chocolate cruller, raspberry Bismarck, chocolate custard, vanilla glazed yeast donut, and chocolate cake donut. I'll start with the food from this bakery, the bread is so soft and fresh. I usually get a big box of bread for family gatherings and all of it disappears. I love the different varieties of bread that you can choose from and the prices for each is not overpriced as some other donut spots around so I definitely recommend buying. Service is great very friendly staff. The ambiance of the bakery is good in the mornings it could be a bit full but during lunch or afternoon it's smoother. Even if it's full it's very well worth the wait. I will keep buying my bread from this bakery for more years to come. Good job!! read more

My quest for a tasty Paczki is finally over. Of course this time next year I'm hoping I'll be well into a new job ideally in downtown Chicago (self-plug time...anyone in that area or NWI looking for a mid-seasoned systems analyst with Agile/Waterfall experience...ok end of self-plug...LOL*) and may or may not have the time to trek it the 35 minutes or so to Henze's for my annual Polish treat. Of course they are open at 4am...hmm. Hemingway they have a small parking lot near the store shared by some kind of hardware store so competition for a spot can be fierce (especially after nearly a foot of snow that needed a few spots for storage). I was surprised to see there wasn't a line at the door like it was when I went to Beck's Crown Bakery last year for their Paczkis. I didn't know if that was good or bad. But upon entering you could see all the Paczkis laid out on several tables away from their other offerings. I was quickly assisted on in my selection of a half dozen Paczkis. I wound up choosing Custard (my fave), Cherry, Chocolate Mousse, Apple, and Apricot ones. I was elated to get my order and even more elated to discover how tasty they were. The pastry itself tasted very fresh and didn't have that "chemical" taste that I sometimes find. It was definitely a good score. Again I couldn't believe there wasn't a huge line and this was at 12:30 PM. But I'm not complaining...in and out in less than 5 minutes. Woo hoo! read more

Been here quite a few times and and every time the girl behind the counter has been rude. I'm usually like whatever and just take my stuff and leave but today really bothered me. I went in with my son and she totally was being a smartass and acting so annoyed as I was asking about the pastries. I just wanted to know what kind of filling was in a few. I spent $15 on donuts and she was just throwing them all in bags..... how much do you have to spend to get them put nicely in a box.... 1/2 the chocolate flaked off from her throwing them in the bag and the toppings, cinnamon, sugar etc ended up going all over the other donuts. The sweets are good but be prepared to not be thanked or appreciated for your business, and don't ask any questions or bother them with anything. read more

We got a half dozen box with glaze doughnut, one of the open face cheese pastry (so good), custard fill, and an apple fritter. Very happy with the choices. Doughnuts were fresh and full of flavor. I had a donut craving, and after checking out suggestions on Yelp, I decided to try out Henze's Bakery to satisfy the craving. It was an excellent decision. Henze's has a nice selection of donuts, pastries, and other confections. We tried the Long Johns, cannoli, caramel bacon donut, cinnamon bun with chocolate drizzle, cherry/cheese-filled turnover, toasted coconut donut, and cherry danish. It was all delicious. Henze's has a small seating area to enjoy treats there, but even the pastries that we took home stayed relatively fresh for a while. I'm also a sucker for good customer service, and so I was really pleased by the employee's willingness to answer questions and make recommendations. While it is perhaps a wee bit on the pricey side ($0.90 for a donut; $1.49 for the caramel bacon donut; $1.99 for cannoli), I would much rather give my money to a private business than to Dunkin Donuts, and in terms of freshness, Henze's has Dunkin beat hands down. All in all, this will certainly be my new go-to spot for delicious donuts in Valpo. read more

Terrible experience. If you want to spent $250 on a cake that lasts 5 minutes before imploding, try this place. Purchased a 2 tier cake for my daughter's birthday. Placed it on a flat surface for the ride home (5 minutes) and drove slowly. When we arrived at our home the entire cake had fallen in on itself. Contacted owner to inform them of situation and was met with rudeness all around. I didn't ask for a refund, just wanted to let them know what happened. She blamed it on bad road conditions and said I should have told her sooner. She was extremely rude from the start of the transaction. The party was within a half hour of picking up the cake. LOL! My two boys and I visited this bakery last week. It was okay. We tried a few different items. I was disappointed that they didn't have any type of bread available, because I was hoping to pick up a loaf to go with our dinner that night. We purchased a smiley face cookie, a dozen butter cookies, two chocolate donuts, a cherry cheese fried pocket, and a baked cheese pocket. My son liked the chocolate donuts, but none of us were fond of the butter cookies. The pockets were okay, but nothing I'd drive out of my way for. I was a little disappointed because we love trying new bakeries, and when I find one I like, I'm willing to drive a little further to visit again.
