I've noticed several of these bakeries in Indiana and finally had the chance to stop by the Valpo location because it is right next to campus. I ordered half a dozen donuts with the following flavors: chocolate frosted donut, chocolate frosted donut with crushed peanuts, apple cake donut, blueberry cake donut, and glazed cake donut. Overall, I thought the flavors were pretty standard but not very memorable. Two of the cake donuts were a tad dry and sweeter than my liking. I think they're known for the cinnamon caramel donut which I didn't see during my visit or might have overlooked. So maybe I should revisit just to try that one donut... read more

Sadly, I'm bringing my 5 star rating down to a 2 because of the disastrous customer "service" I experienced here the other morning. The girl working behind the counter was NOT speaking up (I'm 32 btw so my hearing is very much intact) and I had to ask her to repeat herself multiple times and she got mad and then basically yelled at me to say that I have a filled donut at checkout. Well here's a thought, put a sticker on the box then. It's loud in there. Then I get up to the checkout, had to repeat myself multiple times asking if they do flavored coffee, asked for a receipt, and then the kid running the register goes you can wait over there and points. I go that's nice, I'm still waiting on my receipt. This was around 11 am and come to find out, he was complaining because they weren't fully sold out of donuts yet so he couldn't leave. Went there on a Tuesday, 2:00pm for a snack and some coffee. Donuts were really good. And the coffee? Well... I ordered a mocha. "I don't know how to make that" was his reply. I then ordered a double espresso. "Do you want that added to your coffee?" Confused, I said "No, I want a double espresso." The server then went into the kitchen area where I couldn't see him and brought out what looked and vaguely tasted like a cup of coffee. No attempt to actually use the espresso machine that was sitting right there. My wife and friend ordered iced coffees. The server also returned from behind the wall with two room temperature coffees, with no ice. All coffee products were pretty bad...couldn't finish them. Wanted to really like this place (I grew up in Valpo!) but HOW can you run a bakery and coffee business without the knowledge of how to make coffee drinks?? Probably won't be back... read more

I was visiting a friend who recommended this place down the street from her apartment. This local bakery is so amazing! Why? Well, for starters, it is extremely inviting with this easel on the sidewalk, it smelled so delicious inside, the ambiance was super cool with a huge bicycle front and center, there was plenty of seating along the sides, and yes-oh-yes jam was on sale! There is also an area for remainder items on sale (maybe yesterday's batch deeply discounted?). There was a huge range of fresh donuts and pastries in a myriad of flavors and sizes all neatly and attractively arranged. They didn't have a maple donut, though, but of course I would have to want the one flavor they don't have among the several dozen that they do have. You can tell the owners take pride in the quality and presentation of the products and have strong community and civic engagement by offering daily discounts for military, teachers, students, nurses, and so forth. The bakery was adequately staffed and both employees were young, friendly, upbeat, helpful, knowledgeable about the products, and had on-stage presence with positive body language and genuine smiles. We felt very welcome and our business appreciated! I ordered the caramel frosted donut with white cream filling after asking the employee for his recommendation. It was so good, did not fall apart as soon as I ate it, had a great consistency, was not too sweet, was extremely fresh, and really impressed me! Better than Krispy Kreme and far better than Dunkin' so please do yourself a favor and visit this bakery! If I lived in this area, I would be many many pounds heavier. We became fans of Rise'n Roll Bakery from the Daley Center Farmers market in Chicago and suburban Tinley Park. Since I do not work downtown anymore and we do not see Rise'n Roll at the Tinley Market, we decided to take a field trip. It was an easy ride to Valpo and the bakery was not hard to find. Bonus points for ample parking. We arrived at 9:30am and were fortunate enough to get the last boxes of donut holes for the day. We also stocked up on noodles and butter. They had day old donuts and pies to the side 40% off. If you're looking for a specific flavor maybe best to call ahead as it wouldn't be uncommon for certain items to be sold out. They also offer rotating seasonal flavors. My friends swear by the caramel cinnamon donut holes and i the lemon filled and raspberry filled donuts. Tried a sample of their apple pie they had out and yum! Mom got a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread (her fav flavor), which the staff happily sliced for her. We rented out Rise'n Roll for my bridal shower. They are closed on Sundays and so they open it for private events for a small rental fee. We absolutely loved the place, and they worked with us so we'll to make sure everything was perfect. I highly recommend checking this place out for your private event. They supplied enough seats for I think 20 people or so, so we brought an additional table for some extra space! They allow you to use behind the counter for your food line if needed. So we took advantage of that because we had so much food to serve! It worked out really well. They have a staff member there with you the whole time so you can go to them with any questions! Our host was Anthony and he was fantastic! He even played some music over the store speakers for us. You don't need to decorate too much because the inside is so cute. And you can reserve donuts ahead of time and that way you have some for your event! I highly recommend renting the donut walls! They were a hit! read more

Was so excited to visit this store. As much as I loved the donuts we purchased, I was disappointed in the selection. I believe this store might be smaller version of other locations based on Yelp photos. There were noodles, crackers, homemade breads, and some canned Amish items but there were only about 10 different types of donuts and none that I would describe as uniquely different. The peanut butter cream filled and cinnamon Bavarian cream donuts were delicious and worth the trip. The store is just a few miles away from central downtown. Street parking was available out front at the time of our visit mid-afternoon. Parking perhaps on the back; otherwise, could be more challenging finding a spot on the street. Store is part of a other store fronts. Store sign was somewhat challenging to see while driving and looking for it. Small seating area inside was clean and store was immaculate. Definitely worth checking out and buying some donuts and homemade bread. read more

Its a nice doughnut place in valpo. This was my first time here. Staff were courteous and friendly. Doughnuts were good. I got my favorite chocolate glaze. The whole place looks modern and at the sametime rustic. They got some off the shelf products as well. I did not get a chance to try coffee but will save it for next time. There will be long lines for billing so just a heads up. I would give 5 stars if there was another checkout couter open during busy hours so I could be in and out in a breeze. read more

They get deliveries straight from Middlebury Indiana from the Amishland! So it isn't as fresh, but it's still great. tons of things here like chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, and Amish noodles all superb. Solid bakery, but the ORIGINAL is still by far better. You can actually realize and taste the freshness difference in Middlebury when you come and try Rise and Roll elsewhere like here, BUT it's still better than most other bakeries in the world. read more

This is a unique Amish bakery in the area. I think their doughnuts are incredibly good but they have a lot of weird flavors available so double check what you're purchasing. Overall, I personally do not like how thick the breading is on their doughnuts, especially the powered ones, but they taste quite good if you look past that. read more

This place had me at "hello"! Donuts as far as the eye can see as well as other baked goods. I will tell you, it's a little intimidating because you feel a little on the spot to order and once you pass some donuts you can't really walk back because there are people in line, so pay attention :). I love their cinnamon caramel doughnuts! It has the perfect blend of sweet and cinnamon taste. The doughnut is soft, moist, and fluffy. It's so good! Must get. They don't make it in-house. I came in on a Friday around 3:30 pm and they had $1 doughnuts. Not sure if it's a weekly special but it was a great deal. The service was great. They really made the experience a great one. Sooo I was in Valpo getting tattooed and knew I was going to hit traffic on the way back home to Chicago so I found Rise'n Roll Bakery on Yelp and decided to get a few donuts for a coworker and I to share. Walking in, I was welcomed with all these gorgeous looking pies. Then the donuts. I arrived around 3Pm and was a little sad that both the Lemon and Raspberry were sold out..my favorite go to's. I'm not a sprinkle girl and if I have a donut I like them filled with yumminess. So I got a White Cream with Chocolate frosting. I asked for suggestions for 2 more and got what the counter lady suggested. A Bavarian Cream with Cinnamon Caramel topping (I don't like Caramel or powder-y Donuts) and a Peanut Butter Cream with Chocolate frosting. They were around $1.50 each...my total was 5 bucks and change. So yey for the price. Now I decided as I was driving to have a bite since I had not eaten all day and was tattooed for 2 plus hours after a 2 hour drive/1 hour drive back home. I grabbed whatever I could grab and it was the Cinnamon topping one. HOLY MESS! As I tried to get it out of the bag and into my mouthole...I must have dropped a whole ocean of powder ALL OVER my car seat, stick shift, middle console, my face, my steering wheel, and hoodie. I must have looked like a cokehead lol. I didn't get to try it because as soon as I hit a light I had to put that lil dude back in the bag. It smelled amazing but it's definitely something you need to eat at home. The next one I grabbed was the Peanut Butter. Now, I'm from New York. No one beats our Donuts or Bagels. It's our dirty NY water. Hey, I can say it! The donut was too soft. I have never gotten such a soft donut here in the Midwest. And I really appreciate the fluffiness. As soon as I bite into it, the Peanut Butter cream was all over me. Delicious! And not too sweet. But a little too runny and loose. It was of a runny Bavarian custard. I was going to put half back to try the Bavarian but was done with the hassle. I got home and put the Donuts in the refrigerator. Maybe the custards will set a little more. The donuts are definitely worth the price! And they are soft and fluffy. Just sad I couldn't get a Raspberry or Lemon. If I am ever back in the area for another tattoo I'll come before my appointment so I can get one! read more
