I love fish and chips. This place came recommended by my partner's friend. I used to live in the West Coast (Vancouver), ergo I'm really looking forward for a good fish and chips. The serving was an okay portion for the price I paid. They were serving whitefish that day. It was freshly made (came in fresh from the pan). No "fishy" smell, and the fries are also freshly made. The place is clean but a bit tight. But tables are big enough to accommodate a comfortable group of 4 people. My only critique is that the fish/batter lacks a bit of flavor. A bit of salt on the batter would be nice. Yes, they provided salt and pepper shakers but it's different when the food itself had been salted a bit and not bland. Other than that, the fish was perfectly fried. The staff is nice and polite. I still recommend this place. If you get the chance to dine outside if weather and temperature permits, do it! Great spot for a quick meal after a hike at Killarney Provincial Park. It's located within walking distance of Killarney Mountain Lodge, and has plenty of outdoor eating space by the marina (with nice view of the water and boats). The menu is quite small which makes choosing easy. Fish is pretty good and not as oily as in other fish & chips places. You have the option of getting regular fries or poutine. Basically you order from the window, wait until they call your name, and you can bring your food to eat at any of their tables at the back or by the marina. there was no reason to be that rude. we've been coming here for the last 3 summers and never have we had the employees be this rude with us. first of all the employees did NOT have proper PPE, hair nets, masks or social distancing. THERE WAS A HAIR IN THE FOOD!!! our cashier was rude right off the hop as if we were wasting her time. as we got called up to pick up our order we noticed it was wrong and brought it to their attention, the lady at the window rolled her eyes and said "holy fuck" as if we were being a hassle. another employee came to the window as we waited for it to be corrected and told us to leave, we explained to her that we were waiting for our order to be corrected and that we were called up, she became rude and didn't seem to care and continued to tell us to leave. we waited another 5 minutes for our order to be fix ( turn a fry into a poutine) then when we got our order there wasn't any tartare sauce for our 8 piece of fish, we went back up and asked for some they gave us two. so we asked for more and the worked grabbed two handfuls and ask us sarcastically if that was enough. i really don't understand why they were so upset with us, there was no reason.. read more

We are doing the Great American Loop and since we entered Canada we have been eating fish and chips in almost every town. Some are good some are just OK. Some are very famous, like Henry's in Sans Souci. And then there is Herbert Fisheries: in the middle of nowhere, completely unpretentious restaurant, with the best fish!!! The fried fish is not really battered but what I would call "dusted in flour"; that way you can really taste the fish. It is so fresh and tasty. They have a fishing boat that goes out every day and brings local fresh fish. It is wonderful that they sell the fish by the piece, or in meals. You can seat indoors or outdoors, or you can get the fish for takeout. They also sell beer and wine, limited selection though. read more

I am not a fish guy, but have been a huge fan of this shop since 1989. The BEST fish and chips I have ever had, by a mile, be that in Canada, the UK, Louisiana or San Francisco. Their fish is fresh and locally sourced, and fried with only a touch of coating so that the fish comes through. Pickerel last week; in the past I have had perch and whitefish there. Firm and tasty with spectacular fries. It is a bit expensive, but worth every cent. The constant line up at all times of day suggests that I am not alone in my love for their fish. read more

On a recent camping trip to Killarney Provincial Park, we went for dinner at Herbert Fisheries Fish and Chips Restaurant. Sitting along the water in the sun eating Fish and Chips was a great escape from the mosquitoes of the park. At Herbert's they serve fresh small pieces of white fish, fried to protection. The pieces of fish end up curling because they are so fresh. It's definitely a little different than your typical cod or haddock fish and chips, but that's what makes it good. The size of each piece is more like a chicken strip. So when they sell the dinner with 4 pieces, that is why. When we were there, we opted for the 12 pieces of fish (40 bucks) and 2 large fries (8 bucks total) to feed the 5 of us. We were just there for lunch, and didn't need a ton of food. This was a lot cheaper than us all getting the 14.99 fish dinner. They had a ton of picnic tables by the water, and some were under a shelter so you could get out of the sun. On top of that, they are building an actual nice big looking restaurant space, as right now they are just serving out of a truck. If I found myself in Killarney again I'd probably eat at Herbert's. And I'd recommend it to those who find themselves there as well. They appear to have a Sudbury location as well, but the Killarney one I believe is the original. read more

How is this place so popular? People in the area rave that this is THE place for fish and chips in the area and instead it's the biggest tourist trap. The queue out front would have you believe this is the best fish and chips in Ontario, let alone the area, and should be well worth driving down some 20 km of gravel road. The menu also would leave little doubt- $20+ for an adult portion, $13-14 for a small, and the only other non-beverage menu options are fish, chips, gravy, and poutine. The girl at the cash was promising a 15-20 minute wait in both official languages, but neither was correct. I'm sure we waited over half an hour- the orders were being prepared in the order received and there was no guarantee that one order was going to be the size of another. As we're waiting out in the sun, there's no seating and our beverages getting warm, we watch as no preventive measures are being taken against COVID spread. Perhaps in an area like this where there have been practically no cases it seems unimportant, but the clientele isn't made up of locals. We get our order and head to the patio which has clearly greater demand than seating. Nice view of the water but tables are turning over too quickly to even be wiped down, let alone sanitized. We found a sign after the fact that asked guests to clean their own table(!). On sitting down to warm drinks and lukewarm fish and chips, we find we can't identify the fish as a variety used for fish and chips (my guess was catfish of some variety) and is unseasoned and in more of a flour dip than a batter. The chips were floppy and the opposite of crispy. The table beside us felt the same and sent someone for salt. Packet tarter sauce, the one condiment being rationed, was insufficient. This isn't fish and chips. The coleslaw, of which there was no mention of inclusion on the menu, was the saving grace. Crispy and in a delightful dressing. 1/5. read more

Disappointing! I've been boating in the Killarney area for over 30 years and remember when an order of fish & chips was $6.50. For most of those years the fish & chips were the best bar none. I even had the world famous artist Jane Champagne do an original watercolour of the old red schoolbus we all remember so well. It currently hangs in our boat. Unfortunately things have gone downhill. Bad enough the bus is gone but even the remoteness of Killarney was not sufficient to evade the long reach of health department authorities. That's life I guess. However the real problem is that the fish & chips are no where near the quality they once were and what earned them the reputation for greatness once bestowed. I think it all coincided with the expansion of the restaurant a few years back.....as with so many businesses when they grow beyond what they once did with perfection issues emerge. About the food......the fries were pretty much the same....no problem there. But the fish was very greasy and the pieces left a lot to be desired....I think they may have also changed their batter. We had the same impression last year but chocked it up to inexperienced staff on the fryer and a "one-off" bad day. But it seemed even worse this year and talk amongst our boating friends our experience was not unique. Their offerings no longer deserve the moniker "world famous" and sad to say we may have just had our last "order" since the days of the $6.50 ticket. Fortunately excellent fish & chips can still be had in Little Current and Spanish and my hope is that management will recognize and deal with the quality issues. Won't know until next season if we'd be prepared to give them one last try just for old times sake. read more

Food Quality: Very good. They've good fresh catches and nothing tastes better than fresh fried fish and chips. My friends and I were on a fall color trip to the area, and were lucky to get here on their last day on the season. Found this wonderful FRESH fish and chips restaurant on the waterfront in the village of Killarney, Ontario, last weekend. The fishing boat pulls up to their back door twice a day to unload their latest catch of pickerel/walleye. The staff then fillet the fish and batter and fry them to order. I have never had better-tasting fish and chips anywhere! The pickerel is sweet, flaky and tender, the batter is light and uniquely flavoured (and coloured!), the French fries are served skin-on and perfectly done, alongside a serving of delicious home-made coleslaw. And the serving size is quite generous! Sitting outside on a sunny summer afternoon, watching the boats come and go in the Killarney Channel, while eating some of the tastiest fish-and-chips to ever cross your lips ... . It's hard to imagine a finer way to pass the time. So the next time you're anywhere west of Sudbury and feeling peckish, consider making your way to Herbert Fisheries for a meal that you won't soon forget. It's definitely worth the trip! Absolutely horrendous customer service. I've been coming for years but the service has degraded substantially. I went on a regular weekday and there were maybe 3 people waiting for their fish at lunch time. The joint is employed by a bunch of 12 year old kids without any problem solving ability. Expect to pay over $16 for what is really just some glorified fast food. Inside the restaurant they were advertising flyers with meal prices at $15. So I asked if they could charge that price. The employee at the front told me those were old and they couldn't respect their price on the flyers instead they were now charging almost $3 more. I asked to speak to the manager and waiting for 15 mins. When she came waddling in she told me very rudely those were old flyers and they wouldn't give me that price. I told her she could at least update the prices but she said she wanted to go through the old flyers. Seems pretty cheap to me, after all they do charge almost $20 for a bunch of fries and a couple fillets of fish. She continued by swearing directly at my face and walking away. I never gave her a reason to treat me like that. During this whole confrontation customers waiting for their fish were complaining about their half hour wait for 2 strips of fried fish. Another complaint is that a few years ago you could walk down the side of the joint and see the employees slicing up the fresh fish through a glass window. On the day I went all I saw on the other side of the window was a bunch of employees eating and leaning against fridges. I doubt the fish is fresh anymore. read more

We have been eating there for 34 years and for some reason this year, they food is terrible. The first time we ate there in July, it was greasy and just tasteless. We ate again in mid-August and it was disgusting. They were serving "butterflied smelt". It was like eating heavily breaded skin. When I made a comment, they said everyone else was eating it. Go figure. I guess success spoils. We will not be eating there again. I suggest when you eat there, ask if there is "butterflied smelt" and if so, don't buy it. $20 for breaded skin is a waste of money. read more

Honestly I hate fish. Like hate fish and don't eat it ever. There's not a whole lot of choices in Killarney though so I gave it a shot. Really shocked! Light, fluffy and absolutely no fish smell or taste at all. No fishiness at all!! Just flaky and well done. The fries are at best meh.
