In short, they were about a hour late causing a close family member to miss 3/4 of their relatives services. Wendy is an absolute pleasure to work with, she's as sweet as can be and incredibly flexible and helpful. I was having a little trouble with communication on my end due to her emails somehow being sent into my junk mail folder, but she was still so pleasant and patient. The meal for our baby shower was a big hit, first class all the way. One of Wendy's lovely staff members arrived about 15-20 minutes prior to our even to set up the chaffing dishes and give us simple instructions on how to serve. Some outstanding dishes were the flank steak with caramelized onions and blue cheese sauce, pistachio-crusted salmon, potatoes gratin, and wild mushroom grilled cheese sandwich bites. We had plenty of leftovers that we encouraged guests to take home and everyone raved about how good the food tasted the next day. It's incredible to watch someone you expect to act like a professional adult run and hide into a back room when there are obvious issues that need to be discussed. Wow! Delicious food perfectly prepared. Wendy and company catered our son's wedding this past weekend (150 guests) and everything was perfect. We hired Herbs and Spices to provide appetizers for a 60th birthday celebration for about 50 people held at The Hunter, a cocktail bar that has no kitchen. Wendy was a pleasure to work with, and gave us a wide variety of possibilities, ranging from unattended platters to heated chafing dishes staffed by servers. Having no experience myself doing something like this, she was terrific in helping to determine quantities, and had no issues when I wanted to scale back a bit from her suggestions. I hired Herbs and Spices to provide hor d'oeuvres for a retro 50s/60s cocktail party I had in my home recently. I had 18 people total and they did a great job - I, and my guests, were very happy! Chef Wendy suggested a menu that was appropriate for the theme. The day of the event, Roxanne came 90 min early to make sure everything was set up and ready to go when my guests arrived. Talk about last minute. We needed a catering company last-minute for our wedding (after failing to choose a good one - BIG OOPS). We were scrambling. WENDY TO THE RESCUE! Her team was a bunch of rockstars. She was available on our date and put together menus with us quickly. She communicated quickly and was super responsive. She was affordable and didn't gauge us despite it being a wedding. Her staff were courteous and professional. We hosted a graduation party on Saturday that Wendy helped make truly special. It was our first experience with catering, so we were a little nervous. However, everything went off without a hitch. Wendy and crew are great! I used them for my birthday party which we held at a private home. Just under 20 people in attendance. The menu that Wendy recommended was great though I wanted to make a couple changes, and she was very accommodating. I wanted to make sure that all my foodie friends had something for them on the table whether they're non-dairy, gluten intolerant, or whatever other allergy, and Wendy got that, and put together a really wonderful menu. I decided to pay a little extra and have a staff person on site for the whole party - and wow am I glad. She was fantastic, working away in the kitchen and passing some of the plates that she prepared fresh, I didn't have to worry or even think about the food at all. Also, the kitchen was spotless when she left. Here's another nice thing about this biz, they recommended a couple of small items for the kids, grilled cheese and small plain burgers. This was a last-minute order and they were very responsive to my inquiries. They were able to accommodate a next day delivery date which I really appreciate. All in all I would have to say I was very pleased with the professionalism of this company. Although I didn't hire servers, they gave me all the accoutrements so I could set up a nice spread on my own. The food was delicious. They comped the delivery charge because they were early. Again, I appreciate the professionalism. I took away one star because although their prices are not out of the ballpark, it's not considered a deal by any means especially if you include the cost of delivery as well. One serving is one and a half pieces. I'd be satisfied with two pieces. Two pieces per serving a is a five star rating. I can't help myself. I'm cheap like that. My overall experience with Herbs & Spices was satisfactory, but not amazing as with some of the other reviewers. My husband and I hosted a cocktail party to celebrate our marriage and worked with them to cater the event. I had searched around quite a bit and after reading all of the wonderful reviews, we felt that we were making the best decision to work with Wendy. She was very accommodating and helped fix up a multicultural menu. Based on the previous reviews, I was hoping for seamless service, but this was not the case. Below is a list of some hiccups we encountered. Firstly, one (1) of the two (2) servers called in sick. Wendy was not able to find someone else to work the shift, so our party of 75 only had one server. This meant that less food was being served in a timely manner. Hungry guests were devouring the food as soon as it came out of the kitchen. Some people never saw all the dishes because the server couldn't get to them. Wendy was not there for the party and I really think she should have made herself available and stayed to fill in for her missing staff person. Secondly, we had agreed to bar service until 11:30 pm. I was shocked when I found the bar unattended a full 1.5 hours before the agreed upon finish time. Instead, guests were pouring their own drinks. This was mortifying. I had to take time from having fun at my party and find the lead staff to see where the bar tender had gone. The lead staff wasn't very apologetic about the matter, which was disappointing. Thankfully she called Wendy to verify and the bar tender reappeared. Thirdly, we agreed that there'd be coffee with dessert, but this never made an appearance. Extremely disappointing and frankly, unacceptable. Wendy (who did not attend the event) later insisted that the coffee was at the bar and not at the dessert table because there supposedly wasn't room for it at the dessert table. This is totally untrue. There was a lot of room (too much actually) and no one ever saw/was served any coffee. I never even saw coffee mugs in their crates. A real disappointment. Finally, passed hors d'oeuvres were only served early on. Caterers stopped serving and attending to guests early and instead, were mingling in the kitchen area for a long time, eating. This was quite annoying. I understand that they are allowed a break and that they'll taste the food, but to nonchalantly be constantly eating in front of guests is unprofessional. I don't want to seem petty, but it was also noticed that they were helping themselves to generous portions of the expensive desserts we actually provided ourselves, from 2 different bakeries. Again, very unprofessional. Toward the end of the party, I saw that there was a bit of food that had not been served. It didn't look like they were going to box it away for us, so I had to ask them to do so. I think they should have automatically done this. Actually, we didn't get to taste all the food and it would have been nice of them to set aside a couple of boxes with a variety. I also noticed that we did not receive all the food which was left over. Overall, the service was okay, but not up to par with my expectations and definitely not 5 stars worthy. I work with a lot of caterers with my work and expect top-notch service. There could have been a bit more food and better-trained, more professional staff. We hired Wendy because we wanted to support a small, local business and due to the raving reviews. Not sure if this experience was just a fluke, but to me it looks like better management was needed. H&S catered my birthday party a few weeks ago and everything was great! We had an assortment of appetizers delivered in the afternoon. The food arrived on time. It was nicely laid out and wrapped. They included little signs for everything. The portobello grilled cheese sandwiches were a hit. We loved the pulled pork sliders as well. The prices are reasonable and the quality was excellent. I have to update my review for Wendy and H&S. I've done a lot of events with her over the years, and this past week at Oracle Open World she catered another corporate event for me. She just keeps getting better and better. There were a ton of parties for people to choose from and soooo many people came up to me after the party and raved about how delicious the food was. The quality of the food actually made a difference in the success of our entire show as people a) stayed a lot longer than planned; b) will remember our party; and c) will be sure to come back next year. It's difficult to add to the glowing reviews - but I'll try ! I was planning a 70th Birthday party for my father at my parents home in Alameda - from my home in Guerneville, Sonoma County. Wendy and I planned the entire catering aspect complete via email - with the exception of one phone call. On the day of the event, everything seem effortless - Wendy's staff, Kristen and Christina, swooped in at the appointed time and soon the house was full of delicious smells. They were delightfully communitive without being 'needy' - knew which questions to ask and then went unobtrusivlely about their tasks. Wendy had done a thorough site survey a few weeks earlier and helped tailor the event to the location and help us save on equipment rental by identifiying what was there that they could use. I've worked in the event planning indusrty before, on events for the like of the SF Opera, SF Ballet, AlaCarte in the Park etc. and , though, tiny by comparison, I felt Wendy and her staff treated my 45 person event with the same detail and care that I had experienced from caterers at these high profile affairs. Wendy catered my wedding and I've had so many guests tell me how delicious the food was. She was extremely flexible with the kitchen requirements and made everything work. Due to some unexpected rain during what was supposed to be an outdoor wedding, we had to move cocktail hour inside. As the kitchen is open, there were many guests milling about, which created a somewhat chaotic environment. However, Wendy and her staff were calm under fire.
