Amazing American made quality and hospitality was unmatched. Good crowd could have hung out there all day. I'll be back for my summer hat

The only place I'll ever buy a hat. It's more than a hat shop, they've built an amazing community. You walk in, are greeted immediately, there's often live music being performed in the store and you'll be offered a drink. When I asked "Is this heaven?" They said "Close, it's Texas. Welcome to Herb's." The owner (Kay Maynard) and her expert staff are exceptionally knowledgeable and helped me pick out the right hat and hat color for my needs. They educated me about the different hat makers behind the brands, what they're known for and the nuances to each style. When we found the perfect hat for me, they custom fit it to me and custom shaped it by hand. I live in Portland Maine and was flying home later that day so they offered to ship me my hat so it wasn't one more thing for me to carry or stow in my luggage. An all around amazing experience by any standard. They have my business for life.

After following Herb's hats on Instagram for the last year, we finally made the trip down (from Indiana!). We were immediately overwhelmed with boxes of hats from floor to ceiling. Owner Kay treated us well and fitted me with a nice Dunn Resistol felt hat. Cheyenne shaped it to perfection. It's not every day you get a custom hat made. Thank you Kay and Cheyenne for your time yesterday.

After wearing my 40 year old cowboy hat last week at the rodeo, I knew I needed to make the effort to go get it stretched out just a tiny bit to avoid getting another headache at this week's rodeo. Herb's Hat Shop was the answer. They are a mom and pop shop that has been in the business forever. I was surprised to see it's even a shoe repair shop as well... those old fashion shops are hard to find these days, such a rare art form to be appreciated. I left my hat over night to be stretched, went back the next day to pick it up, purchased "The Hat Jack" hat stretcher which will help keep the hat in shape/stretched since it only gets worn once a year... and because I decided to purchase the stretcher, there was no charge for the initial stretch by the hat shop. That is fantastic service right there! I took a few pics of the shop while I was looking around... and in one of the pics you can see the prices for their services on the back wall. I highly recommend that you think of Herb's Hats in the future for all your hat or shoe repair needs!

Wonderful store. They have an awesome selection, good pricing, and one of the best hat shapers in the game. I would not hesitate to give my business to them again and again.

I was told they didn't have any and wouldn't for several months. I then asked if I could be measured to at least get a sense of my size for future reference, but was told they don't measure because "all hats are different." I also asked about the possibility of ordering one, but received the same response that nothing would be available for months. I understand that inventory can be limited, especially for popular styles and larger sizes. That part didn't bother me. What was surprising was the lack of engagement--no sizing, no discussion of fit, and no guidance on ordering or alternatives. Given Paris Hatters' long-standing reputation in San Antonio, I was expecting a more hands-on and informative experience. This felt more like a quick dismissal than a customer interaction. I may try again another time, but this visit didn't reflect the level of service I had heard so much about.

There is history all over the walls, and you can see this is a beloved family run institution. That immediately made me feel good. Everyone in the store is also extremely friendly and helpful, the service is top notch. I had signed up for an appointment for a fitting, and I had a very specific suit color in mind (dark hunter green). I knew this wasn't the most common color for a suit, and I was a little nervous because I've never been through the tailoring experience before. Matt came over and walked me through everything, he helped me pick out not only the suit that is perfect for what I was looking for but he also helped me find a shirt, tie, belt and shoes. He was with me every step of the way. My suit had to be ordered and altered since it's not a common off the rack color, the team at Penner's kept in touch with me the whole time. I never had any doubt that I was in good hands, and any questions I had were answered fully. The price for everything was also extremely fair in my opinion. I fully endorse Penner's if you're looking for suits, clothes, shoes or anything else wearable. There's a big selection, and it's not just suits they also have just about anything for men's wear. A great selection, and a family owned business. I feel very fortunate to have Penner's in town and I will be back!

Nice place and well stocked- unlike discount stores today. Won't be the absolute cheapest, but fair price for a great suit that hangs right and looks amazing! Sombrero hats, shoes, Mexican dresses, toys, the list goes on. Be careful about the stairs; they are rather steep. I love how the signs tell you to keep your children with you. There is also another sign telling you that you cannot try on the shoes. I asked the salesgirl about it, and she said that they had lots of people coming in to try on the shoes, but not buying any. And then people who actually bought the shoes would come back saying that the shoes smelled like feet from all the people who had tried on the pair of shoes previously. True story, swear to God. I guess tourists have stinky feet! I was looking for a souvenir for myself. Warned about the shoes, I actually was looking to get either a Mexican blouse or dress as I had seen several gorgeous ones during my stay in San Antonio. The salesgirl was great in helping me pick out one, and even better yet, offered a discount if I paid in cash. Done. Best yet, after visiting Market Square, I noted that this store's clothes prices were indeed less expensive than the stores on Market Square. Same merchandise, different prices. I don't know how the other merchandise stacked up, but it does pay to shop around.

I do not like to collect anything and only purchase items that have a purpose. So this shopping setup goes against everything I usually gravitate toward. However, when on vacation I do like to get a taste of the local fare and perhaps grab a little something to remember my visit. Near where we were staying is the Market Square-an indoor/outdoor market boasting brightly colored, cheaply made and mostly imported items. There are lots of people, upbeat music and an energy that lures you in. Here, you can find a variety of articles of clothing, hats and shot glasses. I was looking for something that I could take to my son-something practical-ish that I wouldn't mind seeing around the house. We visited three separate times (it was a stop on our tour bus), but each time I left empty handed. The hours are a bit limited-they open at ten (or a bit after, really) and close at 4pm. There are restaurants sprinkled throughout, which might draw more people than the actual market. I would have liked to see some more high-quality, artisan made items rather than so many cheap things that were mass produced. Or more "consumable" items such as soaps, candles, candies, etc. But if you're looking for a souvenir without having to spend a lot of money, you just may find something here.
