I stopped by Paris Hatters recently to look for a Stetson Open Road in Silverbelly. After standing in the store for a few minutes without being acknowledged, I mentioned up front that I likely needed a larger size and asked if they had any in stock. I was told they didn't have any and wouldn't for several months. I then asked if I could be measured to at least get a sense of my size for future reference, but was told they don't measure because "all hats are different." I also asked about the possibility of ordering one, but received the same response that nothing would be available for months. I understand that inventory can be limited, especially for popular styles and larger sizes. That part didn't bother me. What was surprising was the lack of engagement--no sizing, no discussion of fit, and no guidance on ordering or alternatives. Given Paris Hatters' long-standing reputation in San Antonio, I was expecting a more hands-on and informative experience. This felt more like a quick dismissal than a customer interaction. I may try again another time, but this visit didn't reflect the level of service I had heard so much about. read more

Let me start out that I don't ever need a hat! But I do love hats and this is a place to get a hat not just any hat a real live cowboy hat. I have probably 15 cowboy hats and I just got one more here I'm going to go back and sport for a 30 X felt hat. I felt like I walked in on a legend, and Dave's Crocet was going to walk in at anytime. A while back while in Fort Worth I purchased a rattlesnake hat band. Stayed on awhile but if I turned the hat over it fell off. While we were hanging in Bryan at Catalena Hatters they sewed it on at no charge. I of course tipped; great customer service. Well, disaster. I don't talk too much on Yelp about our Sphynx girls. We have two and one day while getting ready I sat my hat down on the bed. The youngest (her name is Raisin) saw the rattle and I guess total instinct attacked the hat and ripped the rattle off. Wife of course felt bad and got me another one over Christmas. Now in February, I still hadn't gotten it on the hat. While is San Antonio I called up Paris Hatters to see if they could help. Girl answers the phone; I explain what I need. Did your wife purchase it here? No ma'am, it was as I said a Christmas gift. Employee then tells me that they have rattlesnake hat bands in stock. So, I'm supposed to throw her gift to me in the nearest trash can and buy yours? The absurdity continues! She then tells me they would need some industrial sewing machine to perform the job correctly. I'm on the other end chuckling because I cannot believe what's coming out of this employees mouth. I'll tell her thanks and I'll try another shop. The next morning, I drove from my hotel to Herb's Hat Shop. First one in the door as I was told it gets busy so come early. I show them what I want. SIMPLE needle and thread folks. I pull out my wallet to pay and they won't charge me for the work. I go back to the hatter and ask for his cash app info. Tipped $30 for 5 minutes of work. Owned and operated by four generations, and if you're lucky, you might catch the fifth generation taking a nap amongst all the hats. Really great people working there. I came in to get a hat shaped. They did an excellent job with many hats to choose from. I wanted a straw hat for those hot days. They said they could ship to my house and did as requested. Unfortunately it was (hmmm) lost at the Oakland post office. Paris did insure the hat but it took over a month. But Paris called me to confirm the style of shape and size I wanted and true to their word they made sure I was a satisfied customer. Unfortunately, the associate was very dismissive and unwelcoming, which diminished what should've been a fun, joyful experience. They felt uncomfortable and rushed and ended up ultimately leaving the store without making a purchase. They certainly expected a far better experience given Paris Hatter's long-standing reputation. I have been to Paris Hatters as I'm a native San Antonian. The people who own this establishment treat "certain people" with great customer service and others that do not look like them with awful and rude behavior. Thought the first time I visited was an off day for the salesperson but no it happened again the next time while I saw that they treated another customer with great service. I don't go there anymore because first I don't want to give them my money and second you can get the same hats for alot less. The owners are not native Texans. They don't show the southern hospitality to ALL people. Save your money. This place is not worthy of anyone's attention. read more

While in San Antonio, wife decided she absolutely needed a cowboy hat and Paris Hatters was where we stopped. Opened since 1917?!?? Wow congratulations to them. This place from the minute we walked in seemed legit. Not only did it have hats from start to end but also hundreds of signed celebrity photos. I could not take pictures inside as there are signs everywhere against it. Staff was friendly and helpful but there seemed to be some owner looking people that roamed around staring people down. So there was a mixed feeling of how can we help and shop and get out. But overall the place seemed very legitimate. My wife was very happy with there hat. read more

I went in with my son so he could get his hat steamed. He walked in and asked to get his expensive hats to get steamed . The gentleman seemed a bit bothered. He just gave a big sigh as if he was being bothered. $62 later and not even a great job. The edges of the hat were all loopy and not even. my son was very disappointed with the job they did. Heard so much about this place. Came from across town to get here only to be ignored. Older gentleman who appeared to be senile who walked off when I was talking. Other younger gentlemen with shoulder length hair seemed uninterested to help. Found this place while visiting the Alamo. Thought I was gonna be there a long time. They helped me right away me with the hat and within 15 minutes I had a new Stetson. They were very courteous and friendly, even though they knew we were tourist from out of town. Great to see an old business still thriving and serving the community. Decided to go downtown to check out this hat store as a family member had been watching the TV series 1883 & a slew of old Westerns. After researching many videos on YouTube showing how cowboy hats are made, straw hats & the different nuances in the hat designs & features, then finding out that this store made custom hats for celebrities throughout the years, we stopped in. I had no idea they were "the oldest surviving retail business in downtown San Antonio, selling more than 11,000 hats per year" and family owned & operated since 1917! As we stepped in we were greeted by a friendly gentleman clerk. He asked what we were looking for so he could direct us, then told him what activities we would be using with the hat. He directed us to some Stetsons that had several features including a UV blocker under the brim. Interesting how technology has evolved. After trying on a handful & being fitted, we chose one. We were also shown Western style leather belts with ornate designs & on the buckles. He even showed us some felt hats for the winter but told us even they were hit with supply chain issues! He said they were still waiting on a supply that was supposed to come in December but still hadn't arrived & showed us a section where there were empty shelves. Amazing how many industries were affected, including hats! You can't help but be in awe looking at the shelves stocked with hats not only Stetsons but Justin, felt hats, straw hats, Lucchese boots & other high-end brands I'm not familiar with in this genre. You'll note the plethora of celebrity photos donning the walls & old-time memorabilia. There are photos of celebrity clients who've visited and/or purchased hats as well as a big Bison head & I think an Axis deer head on the walls. After we decided on a hat & looked around, we paid our bill to the owner himself, Mr. Abe. Kudos to him & his family for operating his business for so many decades. It's nice to see establishments like this as it brings out a nostalgic & historical feeling of days gone by. We came in to check out the huge selection of hats while in San Antonio. It is a charming hat shop, family owned and run. Domingo was very helpful with narrowing down what kind of hat I would like, what season I would wear it and found the most perfect style. They are not concerned with upselling you the most expensive piece, but what you would enjoy for a long time. What a wonderful birthday gift for me, to have my family join me in this cool experience. Service Wide variety of hats but you cannot touch the hats much less try them on. Only one clerk to attend everyone. People were walking in and walking back outside. We waited and we also left. One word: HAT-standing! Very nice, small shop, has been there over 100-yrs. Was introduced to the owner and provided personal assistance to select the hat that "fit me". I was educated along the way in hat types, materials, styles, and modification. Also they provided help in understanding how to care for the hat. In the end, the not so simple decision was made. A Stetson, black, 20X material, with a couple of changes for bands. Perfect modifications for my hat to my head. It's me. At the end, I was shown the wall of fame. These guys have provided custom hats to many of my movie memories and favorite actors. From Lorne Greene to Tommy Lee Jones, to Clint Eastwood and even Gabriel Iglesias. Good history and fine work! I'll return and can highly recommend going there for a hat that will be "made you". read more

Copied from my Google review Rude. I came in, with a hat on, and was chastised for trying to take a selfie while wearing one of their hats to evaluate the color. When I explained I was evaluating colors and wanted my wife's help, they very rudely said "there's a sign on the door". I won't come back. There are better hat shops with nicer people. Edit: the store replied with a little more context, but plenty exaggerated to make themselves look good. I did not throw any hats. One was already on a hat hook, the other was politely handed back to the woman who helped me. I did express my surprise for the no pics. I did ask for a mirror. It was not done in a rude manner. The old man did allow me to take a pic in each hat after I expressed my surprise. I get that the store doesn't want tourists coming in to use the store as a photo Bbooth with no intention of buying anything. As I had a high end straw hat on when I entered and was inquiring about a 100% beaver hat (which I'm well aware would be greater than $1000), it should have been obvious I wasn't some random tourist. It wasn't the policy, that was surprising. It was the attitude. This response to the review further shows it. I'd LOVE to see any video of me throwing any hats down. In fact, I would change my review to a 5 star and come buy a hat from you. Interesting way y'all take feedback. 12/30/22 Shopping at our custom tailor "Divide & Conquer " the wife decided she needed a hat. Paris Hatters was right across the street. What started out as a hat became a hat and 2 pair of boots. :-) Domingo was our personal assistant. Domingo was very fashion savvy and helped the wife find a hat that would complement her overall look. Then came boots. At 1 point she found a pair of boots she really liked, but they were a little bit small. She was thinking she could just have them stretched and then they'd be OK. However, Domingo recommended she not do that because he said, "if they don't fit as you walk out of the store, you'll end up not wearing them and you won't be happy. I got to visit and shop at this fine establishment quite incidentally. It has almost every hat you could hope for and it still runs with a strong family element that I appreciate greatly. I was helped out by Myrna who was very warm and welcoming and I bought a hat in which I asked for a different ribbon to be sewed onto, as I was from out of town and leaving the next day she had it done for me within a few hours which I'm highly grateful for. In regards to the 1* reviews, there is an etiquette to the store and you are told at the door and the staff have no time for BS, they know what they are talking about in regards to their wares and as a hat person myself I felt NO condescending behaviour from the staff, they say the prices of the hats to customers as they are not labelled and most likely because the prices can be extremely polarising, for this I take no offence. For the novice that knows little about hats, just let them know your budget out of the gate and they'll find you something that looks great! I knew nothing about the renown of the store until after the fact but rest assured if you're coming in for a cheap, moderate or high end hat, these folks are going to help you walk out looking sharp on your budget, from celebrities to the every man, you're gonna be welcome here. read more

I recently started wearing hats more often to protect my shaved head. I was really excited to buy a fedora today at the famous Paris Hatters. I was apologetic to the older woman who offered to help me for my novice questions. I thought it would be a good time to go since there was only one other customer in the store. However, in spite of my good natured attitude she was rude and condescending. After trying on two hats and enduring multiple snarky comments I handed back the hat, thanked her, and left without purchasing anything. When we left the store my 16 year old son asked, "Was it me or was she incredibly rude?" Be warned and find another store like I did. read more

Store as a good selection of hats and the quality is what I would expect for Stetson hats. Overall, we bought 5 hats and we're very happy with them. The atmosphere is pretty cool and the photos of all the celebrities are quite impressive. Customer Service was quite mixed. The younger sales person was great. The lady on the other hand was not very friendly and what truly rubbed me the wrong way was that my 5 year old was not allowed to visit the restroom. And again, we bought 5 hats. 'Western' hat stores generally fall in 2 camps; cheap touristy cowboy-hats for foreignors & city folks, and $500+ hats for wealthy ranchers. We truly enjoyed our visit. We brought my mother-in-law visiting from out of the country and she thought it was one of the coolest stores on her travels. We felt it was such an authentic experience walking through the store and the staff was so great, working with us to find the right hat and fit, even for a family member not there. One of the staff members hand-stitches her own designs into some of the hats or you can request something and she will try to come up with something for you.
