Decent food here! And they give you a lot, fairly priced I probably have enough left over until Sunday if I wanted to. I arrived at 6am as the only customer and within 15 minutes the place was packed to the brim, good local breakfast spot for the early risers with good service, very good home fries and like the one reviewer said those were some of the best plain grits I've had up in the north, my only bone to pick would be to CLEAN that griddle grease trap, maybe it's for added flavor haha other than that I would come back here

Herb Diner was OK, food was reasonably price and the portions were good... I was somewhat disappointed because they didn't have cheddar cheese to add to the grits. the shrimp were good( Large fried jumbo shrimp) eggs was scrambled nicely. The only downside was no cheddar cheese for my grits just American cheese as we all know, if you're a foodie American cheese just doesn't cut it you need cheddar in your grits. I would visit the diner again in the future, if I'm ever in the area.

Salmon cakes, grits and eggs. Very nice. Everyone cannot make salmon cakes so I'm happy Herb can.

His goto place for years now mine. Met the sweetest niece of the owner Herb named Sylvia who made sure we had everything we needed. Food was yummylicious so bring your extra stomach because you'll need it. We will certainly return. Thanks guys.

My dad introduced my brother and I to this family restaurant before they relocated. Really nice family owned small business, all the food made and served with love! The new place is more spacious and visible to attract new customers, however less parking (street parking only) with alternate side parking on Mon/Tue. Food is always good...typical breakfast choices for us: waffles (comes with powdered sugar, cinnamon and butter), fried or baked whiting, grits or breakfast/lunch sandwiches.

Our server was super friendly and patient with us and had some good banter with our group. The food was pretty good. I liked my pasta salad and fries. The gyro was okay but the eggplant was a bit rubbery in the veggie gyro. The chocolate cheesecake was very decadent and good but may be a bit rich for some people. Overall, I had a great experience here!

Too bad, it wasn't a good experience. The place isn't special. It's just your typical old diner. Some people like that charm, so people don't. St least, the place was clean and large enough to accommodate a group of over twenty people. The staff was friendly and did their best to serve such a large group. Unfortunately, the food was subpar. It wasn't my worst experience at a diner, but it wasn't good. My soup came in a hot bowl, but the actual dish was lukewarm. Others had it cold. That and the pasta salad were very, very bland. My chicken salad sandwich, on the other hand, was just salty. I really didn't like it. I finished it because I was that hungry. I left with a bad feeling having been full with food that just wasn't good. I wonder why my son likes this place. He said the stuff he orders were ok. He did say the their tiramisu was horrible. Maybe I ordered the wrong things. Maybe they just couldn't handle a large group at once. I dunno. Unless I am really hungry in the area and there is no other place open to eat I won't be coming back.

After reading all the positive reviews, we had high hopes; but we quickly realized we should have kept driving. This place was absolutely filthy. The entire restaurant looked grimy and poorly maintained, and the food handling did nothing to make us feel any better. There was a large container of potatoes sitting on a shelf directly above the grill. Seeing food sitting out like that was extremely concerning and immediately made me question the cleanliness and safety of the kitchen. I ordered biscuits and gravy with grits and scrambled eggs, thinking at least the grits would be fresh and hot. My other half ordered the corned beef hash and eggs, which were advertised as homemade. The hash appeared to contain a mixture of fresh and old potatoes. He took his food out and threw it away. I ended up feeling sick for the rest of the day. I obviously cannot say for certain what caused it, but after seeing the condition of the place and how the food was being handled, I wasn't exactly surprised that I felt terrible afterward. Honestly, I am kicking myself for not turning around and leaving the moment we walked in. The reviews gave us completely unrealistic expectations. This was one of those meals where you leave wishing you had just gone hungry instead. If cleanliness and proper food handling matter to you, I would seriously think twice before stopping here. Our experience was awful, and based on what we saw, we will absolutely never be back.

This weekend I decided to finally check it out. Spot Diner is located in the middle of a block, sandwiched between other store fronts. A blue awning is set over glass windows in the front. The doorway is a bit awkward, but when you get in you'll see plenty of booths and regular tables to sit at. Even better, you can sit at a counter to the left, one of my favorite features of any diner. I wound up sitting at a booth and it was at an odd time (around 4PM) so it was not crowded. The waitress was there very quickly and she was very nice. The host was cool too. No issues at all with service. The interior of Spot Diner has clearly been renovated in recent time. You can tell at one time it probably looked more like a classic diner but since then the interior has been painted blue and grey (giving off a Greek restaurant vibe) and there are some nice paintings hanging on the walls. I was really there just for a snack so I wound up ordering French Toast (which was still available at this hour). It came out quickly and it was good! One of the challenges with French Toast at any restaurant cooking it thoroughly while not drying it out. Fortunately they did a great job here The outer edge had a nice bit to it while the middle was chewy and cooked properly. Butter and syrup were of course provided on the side. I enjoyed my visit to Spot and I hope to come back for a full, proper breakfast one day!

I like and enjoy Maplewood, its people , culture and food - as well as its beautiful tree- lined streets , parks and coffee shops. On this particular day, I had the honor of Elizabeth Summer companionship (my beloved morkie). We walked and had coffee and walked some more but then got caught in a thunder- lightening storm! Shane on me for not looking up the weather. Thankfully, I was graciously welcomed into "spot" and when I asked if my furry friend was too, they didn't hesitate. I'll be honest, everything we've ordered has been to our liking / sadly- not this day. It's ok though - they didn't want to charge me buy I did ask for an additional order and made sure I tipped the very sweet young man attending me.. "us"! I will gladly continue to visit the spot - I have enjoyed every other meal - oh and their cream of turkey- fills my"chicken-soup with rice" craving with turkey soul! Enjoy!! Buen provecho!!!

So, I decided to give it a try for dinner. They don't accept reservations. I arrived around 6:30 pm on a Friday to avoid crazy wait times, but still had to wait ~40 minutes. It didn't feel very long since the waiting area has a mobile wine/beer bar outside & you're able to order drinks from the restaurant as well while you wait. I didn't come with kids, but I saw a lot of families waiting. It was a kid friendly space. The inside was quite dim & it kept getting dimmer as the night progressed. I didn't love this, but it didn't bother me as much either. Pizza was delicious, and the bread tasted very fresh. The pictures show an individual pizza size, which we were told might not be big enough to share, but we made it work amongst 3 girls. Service was fast - I assume since they're trying to free up tables quickly. I'd recommend going at a non-peak time if you don't like to wait, but definitely worth a try even if for takeout!
