The sun is bright today, the eggs are sunny side up and all is good in the world (mostly), so it's a great start to a nice Saturday with a hearty breakfast! I'm traveling through NJ alone today, so I pull off I-78 in Maplewood and find the Park Wood Diner. This is an old school corner diner with a rear wraparound parking lot that's locally popular. I grab a seat at the counter and start checking out the menu. The breakfast menu card is tabloid sized and filled with choices on both sides and is available all day. I'm afraid to see what the lunch and dinner menu looks like. One of my breakfast favorites is corned beef hash and I get it with 2 eggs sunny side up with home fries and white toast. I love laying the oozy yolk onto a slice of toast and if there's any bread left, use it to sop up any runny yolk left on the plate. Of course, the yolk runs onto the hash and home fries, too. After this leisurely filling breakfast, can I even think about lunch or maybe dinner? I'll have to make a point to come back to see what's in store on the lunch menu. Maybe a pastrami or corned beef on rye or a comforting meatloaf? See you next time! read more

We've been coming here for years now. It's one of the closest diners to us, and I am so glad that we live nearby. I have brought so many guests over the years. Most of the receptions have been positive. We mostly come here for breakfast. We usually order a hungry man breakfast plate or fried chicken with waffles, with orange juice and/or coffee. The restaurant ambience is a friendly, cozy place. Nothing crazy. Usually serviced with a pleasant smile. I recommend for anyone looking for good food with friendly atmosphere to try this place. I stopped by after a workout and Maplewood Diner hit the spot. I ordered the Spinach Benedict (I think it was the Florentine?) and it was so good -- perfectly poached eggs, a rich hollandaise, and a hearty layer of sautéed spinach. It came with crispy hashbrowns that were sooo good and the perfect level of cripsy. I added a side of avocado, which was fresh and creamy, and just rounded everything out. My friend opted for a turkey bacon and egg sandwich, which they enjoyed. As for drinks, the coffee was just okay--nothing to write home about-- But the star moment? The chocolate milk. I barely blinked and it was gone. Rich, cold, and just nostalgic perfection. The diner was packed when we came in (May 4), but the energy was great - busy, loud in a good way, and full of locals. I've been going to the Park Wood for years but never dropped a review. There's a nice, dinery feel, complete with big booths and a lunch counter. The cake and pie display behind the counter is a sight to see, but strangely enough I really the salads at the PWD. The warm goat cheese salad is my favorite (though I pick out the bell peppers), but last night I went rogue and got the gourmet chicken salad salad. I appreciate the choices of heartier, non-boring salads. Maybe one day I'll try that beautiful coconut cake I keep eyeing in the display. read more

The food wasn't good... neither was the service. From the moment we walked in they weren't very welcoming and our waitress was kinda annoyed that we were there at 7am. Our waitress didn't check on us once throughout our meal and the food couldn't even be saved with some salt. They did comp the food that was inedible but was kinda passive aggressive about it. The person at the front definitely made sure to show that he was upset by it. They didn't seem like they wanted the business of me or my friends which is honestly okay cause we wont be coming back anyways. Go to IHOP or something. read more

Popped in for a breakfast, the seating was for when we were all skinnier, at least without the winter jackets. The parking in the back or on the street. The staff was very attentive with the coffee, round every 10 min or so and the coffee drinkers really liked the coffee. The Belgian waffle was light and crisp, although the ham was a little thin but tasty and grilled. The potatoes here are Jersey style instead of shredded hashed browns, so not as enjoyable for me, but they did have great warm buttered toast. Overall a solid diner option. read more

I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS DINER AGAIN!!!!! Visiting family in the state, they spoke highly of this diner. "Oh we order here all of the time!," "All of the locals love it!," "There's so much history here!" is what they would share when getting ready that morning. Because the town is in close quarters, my family and I were able to walk to this diner on a Sunday morning. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the host to problem #1 - sat us at the "handicap EXIT" door, where it appeared as if everyone who in fact, was not handicap, would not only exit - but enter the restaurant. Problem #2 - it was hot that morning, meaning these non-disables individuals were just heating up the back room unnecessarily. Additionally, we had a 3-year old child with us. But - we stayed, was greeted by our server who was nice. Our party of 4 placed their order and were then talking agents ourselves. Then, problem #3 comes - going back to that handicap exit. Finally, a person who was actually handicap wanted to enter the restaurant. My family and I respectfully scoot the table up so there can be ample amount of space, and what happens?... This person, in a wheelchair, grabs my hair. And does not let go. Probably because I have curly natural hair, it's attention seeking, got it - still.. unacceptable. The care taker that was with him did sincerely apologize, and moved along to the back of the restaurant a few moments later with the rest of their party. We, my family I mean, and I tried to move on from that - as that technically, wasn't the diners fault. BUT THEN - yes, there is actually more... Problem #4 arises. That same door? Yep, a baseball team of nearly 20 15-year old boys and their coaches come into the diner. Again, we're a small party of 4 with 3 adults and a 3-year old. Rightfully so, we wanted a new table. AND PROBLEM #5, HERE WE GO. My cousin, the only male in our group, asked who we thought was the owner, for the recently wiped-off table in the next section of the diner. No big deal right, not too much to change?.... This man says that my cousin has "BLACKMAILED" him. What that meant, we didn't even need to stay around long enough to determine. We left, and did not look back. This establishment does not have to worry about serving myself nor my family anymore. They can do absolutely nothing for us. read more

Me and my uncle came here while in NJ looking for something to eat. We got seated right away and order a few things to start. My uncle order eggs Benedict which he enjoyed and gets that's most of the time when out. I got the fillet of flounder francais which was very good . Came with a vegetable and rice . Good sized portions as I was stuffed afterwards. The waitress was very good and very helpful . They have a door to the parking lot for handicapped patrons but for some reason you can only use it to exit and not go in. Service was good. The owner/manager was amicable and he spoke to us several times throughout our visit (beginning, while eating, and when leaving). The food is good and the portions are great! We got the: -Philly cheesesteak: nice amount of meat and good size overall. Would recommend. -Grilled chicken sandwich: very good size. They put an overwhelming about of cheese (see pic) but at least it is hot so you can take some off so it's not such a big deal. Would recommend (especially with added raw onions for more flavor) -Gyro: a little less meat than most diners but was less salty. Recommend. -Beef sausage: pretty standard -side homefries: nicely browned but were plain; wish they onions and bell peppers for more flavor. -chocolate chip pancakes: very good flavor. We were then told by the cashier that she couldn't take us, as she was leaving for vacation. We then had to wait for another individual to check us out. It was a frustrating experience. Had breakfast with my mom here, we both had the western omelet and cheese with the homestyle potatoes and toast with butter also we shared a side of beef sausage. She had a cup of coffee and I had a hot cocoa with whipped cream. The omelets were delicious, seasoned well and well put together. It was the best part of the meal. The toast was done good as well. However the homestyle potatoes had little flavor and not seasoned much at all. Needed added salt and pepper and still with that we were not able to finish eating them. I wish this was a one off but I've had breakfast here multiple times b4 and the potatoes always taste like this smh, they just don't make them good. The beef sausage is usually good but ours was just really over cooked and hard. We ate breakfast here on Saturday morning. I had a garden omelette. The eggs were cooked very well, and were fluffy. They had plenty of cheese which I like. The vegetables were fried which is also the way I like it, I also had 2 pork sausage links. They were seasoned well and tasty. The coffee was what you would expect at a NJ diner, and refills were plentiful. Service was good and fast enough. The server was friendly and answered all of our questions. I just had the most wild and uncalled for experience here on Mother's Day of all days. We went to have breakfast with my parents and I should add we were regulars up until today. I ordered a lox Benedict and asked for cheddar cheese on the home fries. The "chef" put the entire plate under the salamander to melt the cheese which cooked the smoked salmon (a big no-no). I kindly asked them to redo it and they looked at me crazy not understanding the problem. So they remade the plate but kept the salmon on the side and I questioned why the "chef" is having such a hard time making a simple lox Benedict. Finally when everyone was done eating, they brought out a DIY plate which had everything separate. The home fries (undercooked potatoes) on one plate, the lox Benedict on another and the hollandaise in a bowl. I was tired of it at this point so I cut my losses. The manager wasn't apologetic at all and seemed frustrated with me rather than his incompetent chef. Here's where it took the cake. When it came down to paying the bill, the Benedict was on it and I found that weird but whatever. I just told the son at the counter that after 3 attempts, in my opinion, the dish should have been comped. He took it off the bill which I appreciated. What happened next was the wild disrespectful part. The older gentleman with the glasses who is the owner literally chased my parents down and screamed at them for me not paying for the Benedict. Mind you it was HIS SON who took it off the bill and I did not force him to. He was causing a scene at my parents claiming money troubles and yelling at them saying I cause problems every time I go and we aren't welcome there. I always tipped above 20% and never cause an issue so I don't know who this delusional man thinks he is. The audacity he had to yell at my parents and not his own incompetent cook or his son for taking it off the bill was mind blowing. I called him and told him he was disrespectful and had such an audacity to be in customer service and yell at customers who have been going there FOR YEARS instead of getting to the root of the problem. Nice interior - very diner style which I like. We had good service on the weeknight we went for dinner. I had small split pea soup which pretty big and had homemade croutons on top. Mine had too many croutons but I had just wanted a cup of soup so not really an issue. I also had Grilled Cajun chicken sandwich which was pretty good. I was trying to go alittle more healthy as this was a grilled chicken breast but it was covered with grilled peppers, onions and cheese. Bread was nicely toasted but onions, peppers were alittle greasy which offset any "healthy" benefits I got from grilling vs. fried.
