I really love family run businesses and it doesn't get any more family run than this one. Everyone was so kind and accommodating and the food is spectacular. My girlfriend had never tried one of the best breakfast combinations the world has ever seen, so lucky to have stumbled upon this place because their fried chicken was insanely good. So light and crunchy on the exterior and juicy meat of the inside! Paired with a waffle and syrup, it was heaven on earth! I ordered the wing appetizer. It was disgusting. I didn't even finish it. It tasted old and dry. I paid $8+ for 3 wings. Kings used to be better. I moved away, so when I come back to visit family, I go to the restaurants I used to like. I didn't know they moved to a new location. So I called back to ask for the new address and the lady who answered didn't know. This new location is much smaller. I hope this was a one time thing, but I don't plan to go back. read more

Ok so I've been hearing about this place FOREVER and finally on Sunday I decided to stop by. Now walking in to the left is the restaurant area and you can pick up to the right. There was a bit of a line but I was fine with it since I called in in advance. As I finished paying with the waitress (who was pleasant) I see them reloading this oven up with freshly fried chicken (huge pieces at that) so I was excited about my order when I walked out. I ordered fried chicken with sweet potatoes and baked mac and cheese. 2nd order was baked chicken, collard greens and yellow rice. the pictures make the food look larger than what it really was. The fried chicken were small pieces and had no seasoning which was shocking for a soul food spot. The mac and cheese was just ok nothing social about it. The sweet potatoes were the only thing I liked not too sweet just right. 2nd order the baked chicken, greens and the rice, had no flavor. The whole plate went to waste. I couldn't believe it, my friend was so disappointed in her food. Even the dessert was not good. The sweet potato cobbler needed some type of sugar added to it. The banana pudding was just ok. I couldn't tell if they made the pudding themselves or not. The Red Velvet cake was also just ok a little dry. I spent $40 and most of the food went to waste. I won't be returning. read more

Customer service and the atmosphere was great. A nice family feel to it. I was greeted as soon as I came in, and staff was very patient. I got the Smothered turkey chops, along with the lobster, oxtail, and seafood empanada. Smothered turkey chops would've been good but it was salty. I visited on a Sunday morning to order take out. The staff was very welcoming . I ordered catfish with yams , cabbage and a piece of cake. The fish and cabbage was cooked well. The yams look like they were out of a can and taste really bad. The cake did not taste good almost like it was going bad, probably needs to be refrigerated. read more

I highly recommend any and everyone to try it if you like or want to be introduced to "Soul Food". Being of the culture myself, I grew up on food like this. On mother's Day, May 8, 2022, I called in a to-go order from this establishment. The order came to $61.97. I was given a receipt and signed a paper receipt for that amount; however, When I used my apple pay to purchase the food, the computer appeared to read $91.97. I asked the matron about it, and she assured me that the correct amount would be debited from my account. However, when I got home and checked my account, $90.97 was pending in my account. Two days later, the amount of $91.97 posted to my account, and I returned to the Kings (Lyons) to inform them of the discrepancy. The matron at the time asked who made the transaction. I said I wasn't too sure the facial details of the female took the payment because I believe she was wearing a mask. She went on a tangent about how she doesn't wear a mask and doesn't know of a cashier who does (which is disturbing in itself, being that we are still in a pandemic, the numbers are climbing to pre-pandemic levels, and they are transporting food to and from the kitchen). Nevertheless, the person behind the counter was more concerned about the description of the cashier than the facts of the discrepancy. I have the receipt stating one amount, which has the transaction code, which will detail the transaction information; I have another amount taken from my account on the same date and time of the transaction on my receipt. It doesn't matter if I said the cashier looked like Krusty the Clown, that features of the person are superfluous to the matter. I left my name and number for the owner to call, which I still have not received. The Kings on Lyons Ave. is an empty shell of what it used to be under its previous owners (who are now on Clinton Ave). Kings was once a presentable well-mannered Muslim establishment, not the employees were half-dressed, rude, and incompetent. I am flabbergasted at its rapid descent from a reputable business to a disheveled hole in the wall. read more

Overall it was decent. The good was the greens, mac and cheese, cornbread and fish. The chicken was a little greasy and the potato salad was a little sweet. I ordered German chocolate cake to go which was dry. The service was good and the people were nice especially Cynthia(think?)I would give them another try but I'd do baked food instead. I really appreciate how they respected the homeless when they came in but it almost threw me off while I was eating. Starting out on a positive note, beautiful surroundings/dining room if you're eating in. Our order was to go and exploratory. We got a bucket of chicken, a whiting sandwich, a veggie plate, smothered turkey wings, mac & cheese, collards, cabbage, black eyed peas, limas, broccoli, yams and corn fritters. Gentleman taking order said 25 minutes which is understandable for fresh food so when the order came sooner it caused some concern. Sure enough when we got home I bit into a not fully cooked chicken leg (easily remedied) and the whiting was borderline fishy smelling and overcoated (no excuse for a shitty fish sandwich). Those are the negatives that reduced the overall rating of this experience. They redeemed themselves admirably with the remaining items we ordered. Exquisite turkey dinner, collards, mac & cheese combo. Wifey extremely happy with her veggie plate, limas, cabbage, yams all good and we both loved the corn fritters. About a week or two ago; I wanted soul food from Lillians soul food joint but she was closed. I swear the place does not have consistent business hours. This time however I was so turned off by the treatment I was given I will never return. My husband and I ordered our food. It took a little while for the food to arrive which is fine but when it did the order was wrong. The waitress behavior Ms.Diva was so dismissive and so rude.... . They have really good fried fish and grits. The eggs are meh but they're edible. The iced tea they served me was sour but that's forgivable (I think.) I sent it back and ordered a sprite. The service was ok. The waitress was friendly but a little slow. They have an extensive menu and everything is reasonably priced. What I can't get past is the condition and the location of the restaurant??! Yikes. It just wasn't clean enough for me. The parking lot is a absolute nightmare and I honestly didn't feel safe! Oh, and when we pulled up, we had to wait about 10 mins to park. Why? Because about 5-7 undercover cops were arresting two men in the parking lot. *sigh* read more

This is by far the absolute BEST soul food restaurant in the state of NJ right behind another one that I won't mention but the food was excellent, the prices are reasonable and the customer service was great and the atmosphere was homey and made you feel like you're part of the family: I came this morning with my family and had the whiting fish and buttered grits with wheat toast with butter and jelly and a uptown (Arnold Palmer AKA iced tea mixed with lemonade for those that don't know) and we was able to get pitchers to share between the four of us and by the time we finished our food we were automatically full because they give you big portions we ordered take out food for later on and desserts that were also off the chain good especially the banana pudding and german chocolate cake so all in all I'm definitely coming back again (maybe next weekend most likely lol) read more
