We saw Dr. Kaleb Thomas on Saturday, March 29. Our 13 year old male Miniature Schnauzer had been having urinary incontinence, along with other aging problems. Since they were booked, we were taken on a walk-in basis. Dr. Thomas was very kind and patient, answering all my questions. I kind of run on at the mouth, yet he was so patient. Dr. Thomas explained the potential problems, and recommended some tests. He also diagnosed an eye problem that I assumed was just allergies. It's an easy fix with some eye ointment. The vet tech was a total sweetheart. She was very engaging and also a great listener. We talked about the weather differences between the Hill Country and Minnesota. The front desk was very helpful and accommodating. They were efficient and polite. The new building is fantastic! Handicapped parking is close by and there are sufficient spots. I had no trouble smoothly rolling my oxygen machine into the building. It was easy to locate seating with a nearby power outlet for my machine. I didn't mind waiting to be seen - not in such a nice environment! The coffee bar was a welcome surprise, because I didn't have a chance to get coffee before I left our house. When we were led back to the exam room we passed a playroom they have set up for human puppies (children), which I thought was very thoughtful. We are heartbroken to share the loss of our family member cat, Casey, who died after a series of complications that we believe began with his neutering at this hospital. We originally brought him here in April 2024 for an ear infection. My husband asked the vet Dr. Lloyd Willis of the possibility of neutering him because he was fighting feral cats. We did think of neutering him before, however we were living on a small Hawaiian island (Molokai) with no good vet access. The Dr suggested neutering, assuring us it was safe -- despite Casey being almost 9 years old, having just moved a couple of weeks earlier from Hawaii to Texas, and with his current ear infection. No bloodwork was done, no one asked if he was fasting or not before sedation and surgery, we were not warned about potential dangers of neutering him after the extreme stress of his move and the possibility of urinary blockages in older male cats -- which unfortunately we learned later are very common, due to the sudden lowering of testosterone levels and narrowing of the urethra. We also were not advised of any diet changes that should be done after neutering. The vet's answer was that it's a routine procedure with very little potential for problems, it would just "calm him down". We are blaming ourselves for not paying attention and blindly trusting the vet. Almost immediately after surgery, Casey's behavior changed drastically. He suffered his first full urinary blockage in June 2024, we took him to the emergency hospital on a Sunday, then three months later he blocked again and we were back at Herbst. He experienced multiple UTIs and blockages and had to undergo PU surgery in October 2024. He didn't recover and blocked again immediately after surgery, if anything the surgery made it worse as he remained regularly blocked and with recurring UTIs for around 10 weeks after surgery. As we know now, by this point it was already too late and he was developing what we later learned was likely cancerous tissue in his bladder. After the PU surgery Casey saw Dr. Caleb Thomas who did his best to help Casey, and we really very much appreciate his care. He suggested that we go to see a specialist at Texas A&M when Casey blocked again in March 2025, there we learned of the extreme abnormal tissue in his bladder. Unfortunately Casey couldn't deal with the almost daily vet visits for catheter and the medications. He chose his own way, at the end of June he stopped eating and on July 2nd 2025 he died in his home, in our arms Despite visiting this clinic nearly every day for 3 months, after our final visit on June 30th when it was clear that he was dying not one person from the hospital followed up -- no call, no email, not a single word of compassion after his death. We emailed them two weeks after he died with an expression of our sadness and concerns. They did not even reply back. That is why we are now writing this review. So while we do very much appreciate one veterinarian here who was kind and helpful, along with several other staff members who we regularly saw post-surgery, our overall experience was devastating. We trusted a doctor who gave poor advice, poor pre-surgical protocols, and the management does not seem to care as they ignored our concerns. We trusted them with Casey's life -- we visited here more than 100 times over the course of 12 months, the process was emotionally and financially exhausting, but far above all Casey paid for this with his life. Please, if you're considering this clinic, ask questions. Insist on bloodwork. Get second opinions. Your animal's life is in your hands. Casey was incredibly strong, healthy and full of life before his neutering. We always called him our "Molokai Warrior"! He was with us from the moment he was born. He was our family, a part of us. 2/19/25. Great care for our pets in life as well as death. We put our pup of 17+ years down yesterday. The staff at Herbst was amazing. They were extremely compassionate and willing to allow us to take as much time as needed as well as be present for as much or as little of the process as we wanted. They have been our family vet for years with numerous pets and recommend them highly for anyone in the Boerne/Fair Oaks area. read more

Our dawgs are family. Trusting a veterinarian to care for them is an important decision. Wifey and I have trusted Herbst since before they relocated. While the facility is world class, it's the staff that is most important. Every staff member that we have worked with from the front desk to the technicians to the veterinarians are top-notch. Everybody is pleasant, caring, and professional. We cannot think of a better facility or a greater group of people with whom to trust the care of our pets. One of the vets came to the hospital on his day off just to check on our dawg and to meet with me in person to deliver (unfortunately) bad news. This Veterinary has been exceptional to my two German Shepherds. The staff is very friendly and will always greet you when you come in. The doctors have love and care for my dogs as if they were their dogs. I trust the staff even though it is pricey its all for the good reasons and the best care. The waiting room is pretty big and there is PLENTY of parking. No flaws I can think of from the past 3 years I have been with them. read more

My husband went in to get our dog vaccinated and once vet finished with his appointment/ the vet left my husband in the office and said he'd be back with paperwork for our pup- well no one went to get my husband from the office and he was there sitting in the office with our pup for 40 minutes. Vet had left and staff was in the front office and never went to notify my husband that visit was over. The whole time paperwork was sitting on their desk. My husband said to staff- this is not good! One of the staff members said " wow paperwork has been here the whole time and other staff says she's go to lunch. Never going back read more

We can not say enough good things about this place. We have 3 dogs and have had several "situations" we had to deal with and they have been amazing! We have seen probably every doctor there and each have been so good to our kids and to us. The front desk and all the vet techs are so nice and helpful. We will not take our kids anywhere else! read more

Shitty fucking vet and staff. My puppy hit her head they wouldn't handle her with care and insisted it was a toxin or anaphylaxis. I took her out of there and got my vet to look at her. She immediately xrayed her which is what i requested at herbst and they refused. Thank god my vet checked her out because she fractured her skull. My dog was dying so I told them to bill me. Instead they blew my phone up and threatened me with collections. When I got my mom to call and pay they didn't have the bill ready. Now they won't answer their phone so I can pay. Terrible experience. They do not know how to administer care or interact with their clients. Do not take your animal here unless you want a huge bill and stupid doctors and assistants they do not know what they are doing. read more
